Helt has presented this concept — of a pedestrian and bicycle corridor joining Main Street with the park — to the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency, which should have the funds to make it a reality. Noting the CRA has a cash balance of about $1 million, she said, “my goal is to make sure we’re utilizing the resources that we have, to put them back into the CRA district as they are intended to go and do so in a way that will benefit the most number of people.” Downtown’s historic, well-defined ear- ly 20th-century business district is condu- cive to strolling and shopping, she said. Extending that classic model along a pro- posed corridor past the Amtrak railroad shelter on Industrial Drive and into Twin Hills Park at its southwest corner will of- fer a “continuity of theme,” Helt said. She likened it in concept to Disney World’s Main Street U.S.A. that links the theme park’s entrance with attractions beyond. “Connect the two to make it feel serene and safe,” Helt said. “There are ways to do it and carry the theme of downtown,” including matching Main Street’s his- torically inspired street furniture — such as streetlamps, planters and benches — along the foot and bike path. Add picnic tables and shelters to the underused portion of southwest Twin Hills Park, couple it with proposed skate and dog parks on the north side, and link it with downtown’s resources, and “we, I feel, have the potential to capitalize on the properties we currently have,” Helt said. Helt said she envisions par- ents strolling over to Main Street to eat and shop while their children play at the skate park or ball fields in Twin Hills Park. Pharmacy stu- dents at Florida A&M Universi- ty’s Rural Diversity Healthcare Center could take their lunch over to the park to eat and study outdoors. “The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts,” by Gary Chapman, seeks to help people speak and understand emotional love as expressed through the fi ve languages: words of affi rmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service or physical touch.

The book, published in 1992, has sold more than 6 million copies in English and been translated into 38 languages. It has been on the New York Times Advice, How-To and Miscellaneous bestseller list for the last 284 weeks. Editions tailored to children, teenagers, singles and men have since been published.

I fi rst read the book years ago and had an “a-ha” moment when I realized that my wonderful husband— of 35 years now — and I did not speak the same language sometimes.

And I don’t mean because he’s a Crestview native and I’m originally from “up north.”

For example, when I was sick, he would ask how I was feeling with lots of “poor darling” words of kindness. Meanwhile, I’m fuming in my mind, “Will you just leave me alone to get better, take care of those four boys, and go clean up the kitchen!”

Conversely, when he was sick, I would take over extra household chores and he’d be in bed fuming, “I could have died in here and she’d never have known because she hasn’t even come to talk to me!”

So I’ve learned to express more cooing “words of affi rmation” and he’s learned to express more pick-up-the-slack “acts of service.”

I also highly recommend “The Five Languages of Apology: How to Experience Healing in All your Relationships,” which Chapman co-wrote with Dr. Jennifer Thomas, and “The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace: Empowering Organizations by Encouraging People,” co-written with Dr. Paul White.

Shoal River basketball deserves coverageApparently, there is only one school in this town,

because you did not put an article in the paper about the Shoal River and Davidson Middle School basketball game.

How come we see nothing on the Shoal River boys basketball team? They are 13-0 and have the best team in the county, but not one article on them.

This team played in the Troy University tournament over the summer and came in second in their division, beating high school teams.

Coach Buckelew has his best team ever, but I see no recognition in the sports section.

It was an awesome game that deserved to be mentioned; I am totally disappointed in the lack of interest by this paper and its sports staff to give equal representation.

Also, did you know that most of the kids coming out of middle school sports in Crestview will not be attending high school here, but traveling down to Niceville or Fort Walton to attend their schools while living here?

William CampbellCrestview

PETTIS’ SUCCESSORS MAY HAVE SECOND THOUGHTSI’m ashamed at the parents who

started all this. If we had a winning season, this

would not be happening. You have not only hurt a family, but you’ve added more to an already tarnished view of our community.

The kids have worked so hard to get their GPA up so Coach Pettis could fi nd them a college.

You have broken many dreams and, don’t forget, the majority of those boys worship the ground Pettis and the coaching staff walk on.

The staff has raised confi dence levels, made them stronger, made them team players. Those players who bought into the program hook, line and sinker only benefi ted more.

You only gave him two years to clean up a program, and he did just that. He has raised over $50,000 for the program and has worked above and beyond to get our children to college.

It hurts my heart that when you don’t like someone you run them out of town.

Who in their right mind would come to take over a program in fear of the same thing?

Hope you all are proud of yourselves.

Carla Gerard

GRASS ISN’T ALWAYS GREENER

I wish the best for the Pettis family, and hope all the athletic parents learned their lesson, as the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Hopefully, you all learned your lesson and will give the incoming coach/director a less hostile environment to work in.

I hope the children will keep the lessons Pettis has taught them, and hold onto and continue to build the house.

Erica Asble

It’s a shame. I had such high hopes for the Dawgs. I, for one, appreciate the job Coach Pettis did in getting Crestview on the map, recruiting-wise.

Jeff Caldwell

It’s hard to focus on coaching a team with people breathing down your neck about wins. At least kids were going to college.

Gage Abdo

ODD TIMINGThe day before he resigned, it was

in the paper that he just committed to coaching the girls softball team.

Pam Cozad Weidenhammer

BUS SERVES TOO FEW TO SUPPORT

Get rid of it! I can’t remember the last time I saw more than two people riding one of these. Do they really need a 20-passenger bus to taxi one or two people around?

Andrew Twitty

BUS SERVICE SHOULD ADVERTISE

I didn’t realize Crestview had public transportation. Maybe advertising some would increase their visibility in the community, and more people would know it was an affordable option.

Jamie Massey

SPORTS COMPLEX WOULD BRING REVENUE

Putting in a soccer complex would bring a lot of revenue back to Crestview when scheduling

tournaments with the travel teams. Fees are from $500 to $2,000

per team. Milton, Pensacola, Destin and Fort Walton all have sponsored soccer tournaments.

Currently, there are not any places for these kids to play soccer. A sports complex should be designed for all of the sports.

Grace Ruud-Papadopoulos

COMPLEX SHOULD SERVE COMMUNITY, TOO

A sports complex-community center combination would be even better, fi nally giving this area a multi-use, multi-generational facility that could truly attract regional events to Crestview.

Raymonda Schwartz

WOULD MUCH RATHER SHOP LOCALLY

I like the small-town charm of Crestview, but I think we need more shops, such as shoe stores and bookstores.

Anytime we need a good pair of shoes, we have to drive out of town.

Since we have grown in population, we need to bring more stores to fi ll our basic needs like shoes and books.

Instead, we must drive to another town to spend our money when I would much rather spend it here.

Wendy Falcone Jenkins

Sad to say, but after living here for six months, we will probably move south if we retire here. Just like most of the others, we like the town. But the lack of amenities and shopping would make us move south.

Suzanne Gibbs Bobrowski

TRAFFIC PROVES THIS IS NO SMALL TOWN

With gas prices, not everyone can afford “weekend getaways” to just go to Sam’s Club or Target for merchandise.

(Main Street’s) little shops are great but they don’t always offer what we need or can afford, and those shops hardly ever stick around.

Let’s face it: The “Hub City” is no longer “small town” when it takes forever to get from the south side to the north side.

Rebecca Brooks

I had a nice conversation Monday with the writer of today’s Letter to the Editor concerning the lack of coverage for Shoal River Middle School’s remarkable basketball team.

Mr. Kelly in his letter says he’s disappointed “in the lack of interest by this paper and its sports staff to give equal representation” to other sports teams.

Indeed, most of the News Bulletin’s sports coverage goes to high school sports. However, this outcome is due to having one sports editor who cannot be in all places at once.

The newspaper’s staff is very much interested in covering all grade levels of youth sports in some capacity.

There’s just one man in our newsroom for the job, but there are countless parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and others who can help.

Most attendees of middle school games and other underreported athletic events — and community events — own or have access to digital cameras and computers; they can help ensure their teams and organizations get the level of equal representation Mr. Kelly writes about.

CNN’s iReport allows anyone to submit photos, video and audio so citizen journalism can cover what

CNN bureaus can’t. The News Bulletin doesn’t have

a name for its outreach effort, but we want you to know this option is available.

Of course, we’ve extended the invitation to middle school coaches, community organizations, teachers, administrators and other newsmakers in Crestview, Baker and Laurel Hill — with little response and ignored email

and voicemail. (Yes, we noticed that, and noted it each time.)

Occasionally, more letters will roll in accusing the newspaper of bias or lack of interest in something, and the newsroom will write more emails to school administrators, teachers, coaches, community organizations and others, politely inviting them to help keep the community informed. We’ll post Facebook messages offering the invitation; they will get several likes, but little will happen.

So let’s be clear. If Crestview, Baker or Laurel

Hill residents submit something to the News Bulletin — whether it’s a community or service organization’s upcoming public event or activity, a church offi cer election or fi sh fry announcement, a blurb about a business opening or major achievement, photos from last night’s

middle school basketball game or anything else of reasonable public interest — we will cover it in some way, shape or form.

Guaranteed. That doesn’t mean everyone’s

submissions can run in print; although, at times, that may be the case. It does mean that we will report on every topic we know about, at least once (not from multiple submitters), in print or online or both.

This is your newspaper, and we want to tell your stories. We opened this Opinion page for you last fall because we want your diverse views to make the public record. Our reporters do a great job covering city government and other “hard news,” but we want readers to know about the smaller, feel-good news, too: that amazing middle school basketball game, the science project that won the fair, or the show and tell where students dressed up as presidents.

Test us. Email relevant news items, photos

with captions and even stories to [email protected].

If the community comes together and uses the tools available to them — free, no less — we promise not to disappoint.

TOP COMMENTBLAME PARENTS FOR COACH’S DEPARTURE

Coach Pettis built these boys to believe in themselves. For some of them, he was the only one they had to look up to. For some, he was all they had.

Promises were broken because of parents and staff of CHS complaining about the politics of the last two seasons.

The boys were happy; that’s all that should have mattered.

The parents (who) complained should be ashamed of themselves. They are the reason for the broken promises.

Raising chickens in your backyard is becoming a national fad.

There has been a push to change land use codes to allow for small-scale poultry

production in large cities and towns. More people want to raise their own chickens for eggs and meat.

However, raising poul-try is not for everyone.

Before purchasing poultry, determine what county and city codes af-fect your property. Then,

consider limiting the impact of poultry on your neighborhood. Poultry can bring un-wanted smells and insects if improperly managed. Your yard needs a dry area to house the poultry.

Next, consider chick care. Baby chicks must be kept at around 95 degrees Fahr-enheit for the fi rst week. Decrease 5 de-grees each week until they are more than 5 weeks old. These young birds also need special chick starter feed until they are 8 weeks old, when you can switch them to a chick grower feed.

Chicks must be 20 weeks old before they receive adult feeds. If your backyard fl ock is for laying eggs, separate the roost-ers and hens at 20 weeks. Roosters are re-

ally of no use if you just want laying hens. The hens must be fed a layer ration.

Chickens are vulnerable to parasites — like worms, mites and lice — and dis-eases. Put them in a clean, dry habitat. This will help decrease internal and exter-nal parasites and reduce the need to use pesticides to control them. Additionally, ask a local vet about diseases prevalent in your area.

We recently had a fowl pox outbreak, so I would recommend vaccinating against this disease.

Coops should have at least two solid sides and a roof that will protect chickens from the wind and rain. The structure can be fi xed or mobile. A mobile coop makes sanitation easier by spreading manure around the yard so that it does not accu-mulate in one location.

Whether fi xed or mobile, coops must be sturdy enough to keep out predators. Additionally, chickens need a minimum of three square feet of fl oor space per bird.

Finally, chicken manure is nitro-gen-rich; you must fertilize less if using manure.

NBI Properties is expanding with a new offi ce in Crestview.

Experienced Realtors and agents will handle increasing demand for commercial and res-idential properties staff at the

2217 S. Ferdon Blvd. location. The expansion is an impor-

“I know this location will be a

lot more convenient for our cli-ents in this area,” he said. “In-terest in Crestview properties has jumped signifi cantly in the past few years, so our new offi ce will be able to handle the infl ux of investors and buyers.”

Licensed real estate staff-

Gonzo said that many of her new clients are calling

“The city of Crestview has removed all impact fees for the next two years,” she said. “This has really helped the market for commercial property sales in this area.”

Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts attended church services in uni-form last weekend as they celebrated Scout Sunday

2013. The annual obser-vance began in the mid-1940s, according to Cathy and John Humphrey, den leaders to Crestview Troop 799.

“The Scout Sunday tra-

Law says that a ‘Scout is reverent,’ and the scouts of all ages promise to do their ‘duty to God.’ These values strengthen youths’ charac-ter in their family, commu-nity and faith.”

“It also helps the park-ing situation because you use all the parking in the park and downtown,” Helt said. “It’s also a very short distance over to our new parking lot.”

The Amtrak shelter, closed after Hurricane Ka-trina track damage caused suspension of the Sunset Limited’s service east of New Orleans, could have new use in the concept, Helt said.

“When you’re aggres-sively looking at ways to beautify your downtown, the last thing you want is to have something boarded up,” Helt said. “It is the cut-est little thing. That could be even turned — if there’s not another suggestion — into a public restroom.”

CRA board mem-bers agreed with Helt’s recommendations.

“That is a lot of good information and we want to be good stewards of that area,” board member and City Councilman Tom Gor-don said. “My concern is security.”

Helt noted that board-ing up the Amtrak station was necessitated by van-dalism “because there was nothing going on around it.”

Creating a vibrant, busy corridor between Twin Hills Park and downtown would deter crime and van-dalism, she said.

“If you go to Disney World and there was noth-ing between Main Street U.S.A. and Frontierland, there would be a lot of van-dalism and tomfoolery.”

Using CRA funds to maximize residents’ use of the two areas would be a responsible use of money that by law can only be used on projects to improve the CRA district, Helt said.

“We have a little over a million dollars which is not general fund money,” she said. “This is money that is earmarked specifi-cally for the CRA and we have an obligation as the CRA board to utilize that money rather than just let-ting it sit there. I think as a whole we should develop

a strategy and plan and co-hesive vision. A lot of these things are not large scale in terms of cost.”

Cal Zethmayr, chairman of a Historic Preservation Board committee studying the feasibility of recreat-ing Crestview’s original railroad depot as a multi-purpose downtown pub-lic facility, praised Helt’s concept.

Several components she suggested complement his committee’s vision, includ-ing the foot link between downtown and Twin Hills Park, he said.

“This isn’t a new idea,” Zethmayr said. “There’s already an asphalt path there. When they built the Amtrak station, they had money left over and built a footpath along the origi-nal Yellow River Railroad route. We also wanted to open up the woods to have a picnic area.”

“I think if we were to undertake any of this, we can’t undertake just a small piece of this,” Helt said.

The residential program — which requires each individual seeking treat-ment to stay at least 90 days —provides spiritual guid-ance through Bible studies, individual and group coun-seling and regular worship services.

The ministry contacts each individual’s family to counsel them.

“The difference between us and other facilities is that we minister to the family,” Kyra said. “If you don’t get the entire family involved, then what is the point.”

Kyra and her family of four boys dealt with addiction when Thomas formed an ad-diction to prescription pain medication following multiple back surgeries, she said.

He was arrested in 2007 after breaking into a resi-dence seeking pain medica-tion, but his wife was happy the incident occurred.

“I said, ‘Lord do what you (must) to make him realize that something is not right,” Kyra said.

After getting the help he needed, the couple de-cided to have a faith-based ministry.

“We started it with some like-minded Christian friends and God has just added on since then,” Kyra said.

dential facility, each indi-vidual participates in a voca-

tional program.Josh Furr checked into

the facility in 2011 for alcohol addiction, which worsened following the death of his three nieces who were killed in a traffic incident, he said.

“I was to the point where I was suicidal,” Furr said.

A family physician and his sister referred him to Exodos.

Now, Furr — who is go-ing through his second stint of recovery at the facility — also ministers to men there, taking them to several loca-tions where they participate in various projects.

“We help the elderly and those who are unable to do things around their house,” he said, adding that lawn care and installing flooring

are among their frequent projects.

They also are responsible for the landscaping at Wood-lawn Baptist Church.

Furr said he plans to help each resident conquer ad-diction through sharing his experience and the word of God.

“This is where I need to be for the time being,” Furr said, adding it has nearly been a year since he has consumed alcohol.

When he does decide to leave, Furr said he is confi-dent that he will not make the same mistake.

“I’m not saying that there will never be that tempta-tion,” he said.

But “I know in my heart I can walk away from that.”

Although her transplant wasn’t cancer related, Am-mons said she can relate to what cancer patients go through.

“It’s been a very, very long road,” she said. “I was on dialysis for three years.”

“I always want to run for a good cause, especially with my situation,” Am-mons said. “I think it’s real-ly important to raise money to find cures for people who suffer.

Tyler Mitchell, 18, a re-cent Crestview High School graduate, took first place in the men’s 5k run.

“It’s always good to know that you are running for a cause and not just running for the fun of it,” Mitchell, whose grandfather died

CRESTVIEW — Davis Champion will have the oppor-tunity to continue his baseball career once his senior season ends in May.

The Bulldog pitcher took the fi rst step into his fu-ture Monday when he signed a scholarship to play for Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton, Ala. Champion was joined by classmate Roman Donofro, who also signed with the Warhawks on Monday.

Champion, son of Bob and Teresa Champion, said the close proximity of Brewton to Crestview played a role in his decision to sign with the Warhawks.

College football season might have ended a few weeks ago

with Alabama destroying Notre Dame to claim the BCS National Championship, but that only started the next big season for college teams — recruiting season.

I follow recruiting,

or at least the University of Tennessee’s recruiting.

I’m really hoping the Vols can sign five-star safety Vonn Bell and maybe surprise some folks by swinging five-star defensive end Carl Lawson from Auburn. I will celebrate the recruiting victories and try to be realistic about my beloved Big Orange’s recruiting losses.

All of the work by players seeking scholarships — and the coaches and schools trying to coax players to sign with State U — ends today as recruiting season climaxes with National Signing Day.

While my heart might be with Rocky Top, wondering about who signs with Tennessee, my energy and focus will be at Crestview High School. There, a trio of Bulldog football players will sign National Letters of Intent during an 11 a.m. celebration in the school’s auditorium.

Running back Micah Reed is expected to sign with Central Florida. Tyler Henderson will sign with Florida Atlantic University, where he also will have a chance to play baseball. Justin Rebholz will continue his playing career and education at the United States Coast Guard Academy.

I’ll be at Baker later in the day as Gator volleyball player Katie Wickery signs to play for Lake-Sumter Community College, where she will join former Baker star Laurie Steele.

CRESTVIEW — A packed house gave Crest-view senior basketball players Jordan Wad-dell, Jonathan Buckelew, Roman Donofro and Clay Hancock a fi tting sendoff on Senior Night against Walton on Friday.

With Buckelew and Dono-fro leading the way with 13 points each, the senior quartet helped make the night one they would never forget as they beat the Braves 67-31.

Hancock added nine points on three third quarter 3-pointers and Waddell chipped in six as they combined for 41 points.

The team played the game’s last two minutes with a run-ning clock.

“It was a real emotional night, but we fought through it and came together for the win,” Buckelew said. “It’s so special; me, Roman and Clay have been together since the sixth grade.

“They beat us ear-lier in the season, and this shows how far we’ve come. This is two big wins in a row, and it gives us momentum going into the district tournament.”

CRESTVIEW — If there is an epitome of a bulldog on the Crestview baseball team, Roman Donofro would be that player.

Standing only 5-foot-7 or 5-foot-8, Donofro, a pitcher and outfi elder, won’t bowl you over with his size, until you start measuring the size of this Bulldog’s fi ght.

Donofro fulfi lled a dream Monday when he signed a baseball scholarship to play for Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton, Ala.

BAKER — Six strong innings weren’t enough for the Baker softball team as the Gators opened the 2013 season against Pine Forest on Monday.

Baker held the Eagles without a score until the top of the seventh inning when they pushed across two runs to take a 2-1 win over the Gators.

Baker (0-1) did little wrong most of the night.

Gator pitcher Macie Wilde was spot on most of the night, striking out 11 bat-ters in the fi rst six innings.

At one point, she struck out seven of eight batters in a stretch that started in the fi rst inning and went through the

third. She was equally effective keeping the

Eagles off base; she gave up just two hits while walking two batters and hit-ting another with a pitch in the fi rst six innings.

“It’s disappointing,” Baker coach John Carlisle said. “We are going to let it burn for one day and move forward.

“For six-and-a-third innings, we played an outstanding defensive game. Macie pitched a heck of a ball game in the circle and was hitting spots early on. She had her game working.”

Baker scored the game’s fi rst run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alexis Mitchem singled to start off the Gator rally.

Donofro, also a standout on the Crestview basketball team, said his reason in picking Jeff Davis and base-ball was simple.

“I just felt like it was a good fi t for me,” he said. “It just seemed like the place to be.

“Baseball has always been my No. 1 focus and pri-ority. It’s always been what I wanted to go further in.”

Donofro’s abilities on the baseball diamond surpass the mound. When he’s not pitching, he’s often in the outfi eld for the Bulldogs.

Crestview coach Tim Gillis said that what Dono-fro lacks in size he more than makes up for in talent and heart.

“Roman has always been a guy that has kind of over-achieved as far as when you look at his stature,” Gillis said. “But he’s a guy that is a great competitor and when you have that kind of competitive drive the sky’s the limit.

“Roman can play outfi eld and he can hit a little bit so he can help them out in sev-

eral ways.”Warhawk assistant

coach Adam Reed was on hand Monday to watch Donofro and Champion sign.

Reed said the Jeff Da-vis staff is always looking for players from Northwest Florida and they know when they sign a player from Crestview that they get a kid that has been well-coached by Gillis.

The Warhawks usually have four or fi ve guys that pitch and also play another position and that, in time, Donofro is likely to get a look playing the outfi eld, but he will start his career on the mound, Reed said.

“The perfect way to describe him (Donofro) is a bulldog,” Reed said. “We love the heart that he brings. We can tell he’s got the energy.

“He’s got all the pitches we need as far as his ability. I think he can throw a lot of strikes. I think he’s going to be a guy that can step right in as a freshman and contribute.”

Signing day always raises mixed emotions in me. I’m happy for the young men and women as they fulfi ll their dream, but it’s hard to see some kids go.

Crestview shortstop Dakota Dean signed a baseball scholarship with Louisiana State back in November. It seems as if Dean and Henderson have been high school players forever.

Dean and Henderson started for the baseball

team since their fi rst game freshman year. Henderson was a starter on the football team from his high school career’s fi rst day.

The 2013 baseball regular season starts Monday, and I’ll savor the fi nal weeks of watching Dean and Henderson play high school ball. I will think about their journeys that I’ve had the opportunity to cover.

There are times when I like to just drop by a

practice and watch high school athletes enjoy their sport. Yes, these young men and women work hard to play their games, but in high school, games are still just that: games.

I’m not saying there’s no pressure on high school athletes to win or achieve at a high level. However, it’s not the same kind of pressure that goes with being a scholarship athlete.

Let’s celebrate the best of our best high

school athletes. The world is theirs for the taking today, as they prepare to step away from the security of home and embark on their college careers.

I wish all of them the best.

NICEVILLE — Choc-tawhatchee proved unbeat-able during the regular season, wrapping up the program’s fi rst undefeated season with a 25-0 mark.

Judging by the Indians’ fi rst postseason appear-ance, it appears that streak of perfection has no end in sight.

Brittany Brown scored a game-high 24 points, Lau-ren Day added 15, and the defending district champion Indians jumped out to a 37-3 lead en route to a 61-26, running-clock victory over Crestview in Friday’s Dis-trict 2-6A semifi nals.

“They’re gelling more to-gether,” said Choctaw coach Don Brown, whose team will meet Fort Walton Beach at 7 p.m. tonight in Niceville in a rematch of last year’s dis-trict championship. “Great chemistry, great kids and I’m proud of what they’ve accomplished so far. This is the playoffs, and anybody can beat you, so we’re going to play as hard as we can play every game.”

Brittany Brown, who fi lled up the stat sheets with seven assists, fi ve rebounds, fi ve steals and two blocks, agreed.

“This is the start of a new

season, and we wanted to come out strong and play good defense tonight,” she said.

Good defense would be an understatement.

The Indians forced Crestview into 22 turnovers and held the Bulldogs to two fi rst-quarter points and 15 percent shooting — 6 for 39 — and didn’t allow a single Crestview player to break into double digits in the scor-ing column. The pick-pock-et, suffocating effort was so dominant that Lakayla Robinson, a freshman who scored Crestview’s fi rst basket with 50 seconds left in the fi rst quarter, was the lone player to approach dou-ble digits with eight points.

With Brown attacking the lanes, Day posting a stout inside-outside game and Brittany Washington adding 12 points, the Indians had no scoring woes. Led by a 20-for-35 shooting effort at halftime, the Indians shot 49 percent from the fl oor for the game and made four of nine 3-point attempts.

As for turnovers, the In-dians committed just eight as part of an unselfi sh, fl uid offense designed on setting up the best possible shot.

“We’re trying to play to-gether because we know we’re going to need each other in the harder games,” coach Brown said.

From the start, the cohe-sive play was on display.

Brown led the night with a layup — and the Indians never looked back.

Washington scored 10 points and was 2 for 2 from beyond the arc, Brown and Day each scored eight, and the Indians made 13 of 19 shot attempts in the opening quarter, putting the Indians comfortably ahead 30-2.

“They have a good squad, but we just came out, set the tone and played hard,” coach Brown said. “We had all week to get ready for this game, and I’m proud of the

kids.”In the second quarter,

Brittany Brown asserted the same dominance that drew Florida State Univer-sity’s attention. The future Seminole scored 14 points and dished out four assists, leading the Indians into the locker room ahead 49-11. To illustrate her effectiveness, her 22 points alone doubled up the Bulldogs score. Washington also ended the half outscoring Crestview, which shot 3 of 17 in 16 min-utes, with 12 points.

Out of the locker room, it was much of the same. The

lead never fell below 33 and, predictably, coach Brown pulled his starters late in the third with the running clock, which made quick work of the fi nal frame.

As for being a state-ment to Choctaw’s big-pic-

ture outlook at a state title, coach Brown squashed that thought.

“A lot of people have been looking ahead, but we’ve not (been doing so) as a team,” he said. “We’re taking it one game at a time.”

Choctawhatchee’s Lauren Day, left, and Brittany Washington, right, try to steal the ball from Crestview’s LaKayla Robinson on Friday.

Crestview head girls basketball coach Kathy Combest talks to her team from the sideline during Friday’s game against Choctawhatchee.

“It’s close to home,” he said. “I’m a mama’s boy and I defi nitely wanted to stay close to home.”

Davis said his desire to play college ball was sparked as he watched teammates from last year’s Bulldog squad sign to play at junior colleges and four-year schools,

“Last year when every-body signed, I had a vision that I wanted to be up there on the stage with them and I wanted to have my time,” he said. “So this summer, I spent every day throwing long toss. Me and Roman spent tireless hours on the baseball fi eld and I feel like we are well prepared going up to junior college next year.”

Jefferson Davis assis-tant coach Adam Reed, who works the Warhawk pitchers, signed Champion and Donofro.

It was hard not to like what Champion, who stands about 6-foot-3, brings to the mound, Reed said.

“When you look at Da-vis, the fi rst thing you see is the size,” Reed said. “When he gets into the program and he continues to devel-op with hard work and his work ethic, it will go a long way.

“I think we can push that even higher than his potential is now. He’s got a high ceiling as far as development.”

Bulldog coach Tim Gillis has watched Champion de-velop into a quality pitcher that can get the job done. Champion and Donofro are good players with good heads on their shoulders, Gillis said.

“Davis has worked ex-tremely hard and his ve-locity has increased quite a bit,” Gillis said. “His me-chanics have always been pretty sound. He’s got those skills where he can make quick adjustments.

“He’s a very good stu-dent of the game and I think he’s only going to get better and better.”

Mitchem moved to sec-ond as Jenna Stevenson was safe on an infi eld hit.

Mitchem and courtesy runner Kaitlyn Smith, who was running for Ste-venson, advanced a base on a Kaitlan Godwin sac-rifi ce. Mitchem scored from third on a wild pitch.

But that was all there was to the rally.

Smith was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning as Jor-dan Linzy reached on a fi elder’s choice. The in-ning ended for the Ga-tors with Courtney Ellis grounding out to Eagle pitcher Rachel Munoz.

Baker stole a page from Sunday night’s Su-per Bowl in the top of the fi fth inning when, with two Pine Forest outs, the lights on the diamond’s third base side went out.

The lights were re-stored after about a 30-minute delay.

The Eagles (1-0) man-ufactured their two runs in the top of the seventh.

In what can only be de-scribed as a strange play, Pine Forest fi rst baseman Miranda Kelley walked

and stole second as the home plate umpire lost track of the count.

Kelley took third on a sacrifi ce and scored as Brittney Ward was safe on a swinging bunt.

Ward scored on a base hit by Jordyn Pulliam.

Baker tried to mount a two-out rally in the home half of the seventh when Ellis singled up the mid-dle, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles held on for the win.

Munoz, the Pine For-est pitcher, held Baker to just four hits. Linzy had a hit in addition to those by Mitchem, Stevenson and Ellis.

“The thing that hurt us is we gave away outs by getting fl y ball outs,” Car-lisle said. “There are no bad hops in the air. There is nothing you can do about that but to go back and readjust as a hitter.

“We made some ad-justments in the (batter’s) box, but we just didn’t make enough to not stay off that bottom half of the ball. We are going to learn from this and use it as a building tool.”

The Bulldogs (12-10) trailed of exactly one minute and 52 seconds.

A Deshun Tucker basket seven seconds into the game gave the Braves (15-8) their only lead of the night.

The lead lasted until Donofro hit his first 3-point-er of the night at the first quarter’s 6:01 mark. Baskets by juniors Denzel Ware and Ronnie Baylark made the score 9-2 and the rout was on.

Baylark, Ware and Jerry Aaron each had four points

in the first quarter as Crest-view led 15-9 at the end of the period.

The Bulldogs took control of the game in the second quarter behind eight points from Donofro and five points from Buckelew.

Crestview’s lead was 33-19 at the half and the Braves never got closer the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run as Baylark and Hancock hit back-to-back 3’s. Ward and Waddell followed with 2-

point baskets.A Tucker score and an

old-fashioned 3-point play by Randolph briefly stopped the Bulldog run, but not for long. Crestview closed out the third quarter on a 14-7 surge, going up 57-31.

Buckelew and Waddell closed things out for Crest-view in a 10-0 fourth quarter. Waddle scored on a pair of layups, and Buckelew was perfect on six tries from the free throw line.

Baylark joined Buckelew and Donofro in double fig-

ures for the Bulldogs with 11 points. Aaron had eight points and Ware six points.

Randolph had 12 points for the Braves.

“These games are very difficult because they are so emotional so you never know how they are going to play,” Bulldog coach Ken Meisner said.

“The kids surprised me because they were in tears during the ceremony. But they came out and, God bless them, did every thing they could to win.”

CRESTVIEW — Krystal Jackson, the Hub City’s Relay for Life event chair-woman, credited local residents for contributing to Okaloosa County’s fund-raising success.

The county’s fundrais-ing efforts for the annual event, which benefi ts the American Cancer Society, made it No. 1 per capita for 2012, the organization an-nounced Thursday. Relay teams in Crestview, Nicev-ille, Fort Walton Beach and Destin reportedly raised more than $524,000 during last spring’s events.

Crestview’s contribu-tions ranked 24th among Florida’s more than 350 Relay teams, offi cials said. Fort Walton Beach’s dona-tions ranked seventh in the state.

Each city’s efforts pro-pelled Okaloosa to the

top spot — a fi rst for this northwest Florida area, said Shelly Miller, the American Cancer Society Emerald Coast’s operating chairwoman.

“Considering Relay for Life events are held in 50 states and more than 20 countries around the globe, this is such an amaz-ing accomplishment for our relatively small popula-tion,” said Cal Brooks, the American Cancer Society’s Panhandle area executive director. “The strength and

sheer dedication of our vol-unteers and staff made this possible.”

“We feel blessed to have the support from the Crest-view community,” Jackson said after the event. “To have this recognition is overwhelming.”

Sponsored teams of organizations, churches, friends and family mem-bers annually spend one night camping, take turns walking and running on a racetrack and commemo-rate those diagnosed with cancer.

“Because cancer never sleeps and for one night, neither do the Relay (par-ticipants),” a spokesperson said, adding 5,000 Relay for Life events take place worldwide.

The American Cancer Society’s Emerald Coast unit has more than 700 vol-unteers in Okaloosa, Wal-ton and Holmes counties, and fi ve staffers, according to the organization.

This year’s Relay for Life is April 26-27 at Old Spanish Trail Park in Crestview.

More than 50 teams participated in last year’s event, raising more than $155,000 for the American Cancer Society.
