MISE-EN-SCENE NOTE

Page 2: Mise en-scene note A2

Mise en scène encompasses the most recognizable attributes of a film. The setting and the actors; it includes costumes and make-up, props,

and all the other natural and artificial details that characterize the spaces filmed. The term is borrowed from a French theatrical

expression, meaning roughly “put into the scene”. In other words, mise-en-scène describes the stuff in the frame and the way it is shown and arranged. There are four general areas: setting, lighting, costume and staging. In the end it also included some special effects that are

closely related to mise-en-scène.

SETTING AND LOCATION

Setting creates both a sense of place and a mood and it may also reflect a character’s emotional state of mind. It can be entirely fabricated within a studio – either as an authentic re-construction of reality or as a whimsical fiction – but it may also be found and filmed on-location. In my film Agent 27 I used several locations. In my first scene I needed a forest and deserted type place so that’s why I shot my movie at airmen golf course It was the perfect location for my scene.

Second location I used was my house I portrayed that house as Russian mafia hide out because some of the places in house is designed in that way that’s why it can easily give the effect of Russian mafia hideout . I shot the torturing scene in the house and I especially made a set for that particular scene and all that things which I used to make a set comes in Mise-en-scene for example ladder, generator , bulb old trolley and wires for the electric shock. Reference film also helped me in setting the location for my final film. I choose location according to my reference which made my movie look more better.

Lighting and color Lighting and color is the most important element in a film it tells about the mood of the character. In my first scene I have used high key lighting because i have to show deserted area where my agent is trapped for this scene I had to use natural light. However in most of my movie I have used low key lighting because my genre is action and thriller and to create thriller and suspense scene in my movie. I have used street lights and very dim lights for my movie darkness portrays sadness, tension, suspense and thriller.

Cinematography Cinematography involves camera shots, camera angle and camera movement all these elements come in cinematography. I have used many different shots in my final 5 minute film. I have used long shots in the starting for my movie. In most of the scene I have used panning shots and for these shots I have used steady-cam to stabilize my camera. I have used these shots because my reference film contain lot of panning shots.

Costume and make-up

Costume plays the main the role in my movie. My movie is involves Russian mafia and special forces agents. To set the character who was playing the role of guard I had to use different costumes for example Mask, gloves, guns. For agent the dressing was formal because in my reference film transporter 3 the protagonist is wearing suit during the mission that’s why I had to keep the costume of the agents formal.

The agent harry his dressing was kept causal because he was the prisoner of Russian mafia so that’s I made his clothes dirty and I also used bandage on harry face to show that he is hurt. Bandage was also the part of costume.

Sound is the most important element in movies. There are two types of sound diegetic sound and non diegetic sound. In most of the scene I have used diegetic

sound. In the staring of my movie I have used diegetic sound and non diegetic sound the gun shots and helicopter is a part of diegetic sound scene also had one non diegetic sound it was used when guard was sleeping in on the bench. I also used diegetic sound in torching scene when the harry was screaming and

electric shock this is all part of the diegetic sound.
