Convenience and cost factors have pitch forked plascs as the most preferred material of choice ll recently. A rethinking about its impact on environment is slowly pung a brake on its connued use. Plasc not only threatens aquac habitats, but eventually gets on our dinner table as poison. Children are the worst affected. Processed foods cause ADHD, Type 2 diabetes and ausm. We need to educate the urban youth and families about this. Single use plascs are very rampantly used. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Refuse – these are the four R's regarding plasc that we advocate. In just these three months from July 1 to September 30, 2018 in Mumbai alone Rotary has spearheaded the movement to discard single use plasc bags. We have made 60000 cloth bags and distributed all over Mumbai. We will connue on this path.

Millions of today's children live in areas that are most exposed to climate change, meaning they face more droughts, floods, heat waves and other severe weather condions. Climate change can also create a vicious circle: a child deprived of adequate water and sanitaon before a crisis will be more affected by a flood, drought, or severe storm, less likely to recover quickly, and at even greater risk when faced with a subsequent crisis. Beginning on 15 August 2018, severe floods affected the south Indian state of Kerala. Thirty-five out of the fiy-four dams within the state were opened for the first me in history. The floods displaced over 800,000 people. Rotary District 3141 has commied to building 100 houses of 339 square feet each and each house will cost Rs 3,50,000/-

Reducing the risks from climate change will enable the young to not only survive, but thrive. More than half the world's populaon is now under the age of 25, as UN Secretary General António Guterres pointed out during this year's General Assembly. Today's youth—and all future generaons—will live with the consequences of how we respond to climate change. By 2020, India's average age will be just 29 years. At the most basic level, India must focus on improving the overall health and well-being of its children in order to make the most of their immense potenal. India's demographic dividend is expected to level off around 2040, so in order to capitalize on its favorable demography India must act now. We Rotarians are highly empowered to do so and we will.

Dear fellow Rotarians;

‘’A true conservaonist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children,‖ said John James Audubon, an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter.

Climate touches every facet of our children's lives. The quality of the air we breathe affects children more than it does us adults. Children take in more air per unit body weight at a given level of exeron than do adults. When a child is exercising at maximum levels, such as during a soccer game or other sports event, they take in 20 percent to 50 percent more air -- and more air polluon -- than would an adult in comparable acvity. Children spend more me outside, and are oen outdoors during periods when air polluon is at its highest. We can reduce carbon emissions by using more solar energy. Rotary has installed 100 kilo wa Solar System under Global Grant at Amulakh Amichand High School, Matunga. It generates 400-550 units per day depending upon weather condions. A Global Grant of Solar Lighng project with 9 clubs joining in was also done. 7 rural areas and 2 semi urban areas were touched. Project value was about USD 60,000/-. More projects are underway.

Several heads turned on seeing a swaying sea of maroon shirts at Indira Gandhi Internaonal Airport on August 1, 2018. A mind-boggling number -

151 Rotarians with their families travelling to Almaty at Kazakhstan was certainly a handful. A Rotarian remarked that only the Almighty can see us

through the Almaty trip. This idea of this tour to the ninth largest naon of the world, was the brain-child of the District Governor Shashi Sharma at

Pre-pets and naturally the wheel was set in moon right then.

Blithe and bonhomie at the airport, and smooth and swi check-in to Rahat Hotel were the natural sequel to the meculous planning and careful

organizaon that came straight from the heart of a commied team. What was the ingredient that added spice to this winning recipe? The online

registraons facilitated by Rotarians Devang Goradia, Rajan Dua, Anand Ramnani? The perfect inerary? The superb management of individual visas? The

magnificent pricing from the team of Rotarians Vikash & Nisha Aggarwal, and Sameer & Sonia Karnani? A thoughully prepared goody bag stacked with

personalized baggage tags, passport covers, universal adapter, a rotary T Shirt along with exquisite SOVA toiletries kit, and the mouth-watering chocolates

personally curated by the First Lady Paula Shah of Rotary club of Hanging Gardens? Was it the memorable greeng extended by all the members of the

host club? Was this the perfect coordinaon of team Arunodaya & Rahat hotel management? Was it the perfect blend of all these? No one knew or cared.

Unwinding themselves, moments later the members headed for dinner where they relaxed over drinks and hot Indian food, equally matched by the

entertaining acts of local dance performers. The first day at Almaty vanished like a dream into so fluffy pillows.

On the second day, fresh and raring to go aer a sumptuous breakfast, the members took off in three buses kept ready. Making sure of the count and

occupancy, was Rtn Gautam Dalal (AG), an exercise he did diligently at each and every point of entry, for the next 4 days. The morning desnaon was to

the “Kok Tobe” hill resort, a recreaonal area. The foot of the mountain has one of the highest TV towers (372 mtrs above sea level) in the world. Though

connected by a cable car, we chose shule buses to go atop the hill. Kok Tobe park had a fountain of "desire" in the shape of an apple (interesngly, this is

the country of origin of apples), a children's playground, a climbing wall, the roller Coaster ride, restaurant, a zoo, etc and a viewing plaorm that gives a

breathtaking view of the city . It also has the famous bronze Beatles monument.

Post-lunch session was an amazing trip to the Alma-Arasan gorge which has the Sunkar Falcon Center. Here we witnessed professional training of birds of

prey, the hawks, owls, falcons, vultures, eagles and the like. The sheer size and the proximity of these birds are sufficient to scare a person. The trainer

there exhibited a wonderful show depicng the fascinang preying skills of these birds.

The fellowship night was abuzz with musical antakshari. Five teams played interesng quiz rounds interwoven with bollywood songs. Best dressed

couples were felicitated and then followed dance performances by Pachisias from RCB Harbor. Three back to back acon packed performances by RCM

Parleshwar, a “gabbar” by Presanatan Mody of RCM South, a song and dance by Rtn Vikash Aggarwal and an impromptu jig by Rtn Dilip Shah brought to

an end this gala entertaining evening. Anns Bhairavi Daary & Nisha Aggarwal from the host Club carried the evening on their graceful shoulders with

effecve anchoring.

On the third day, a long 4 hour-drive through the villages and the mountain ranges of Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan, a clean, neat and dy

small city, was a splendid experience. Well laid out streets, lot of green cover, picturesque soaring, snow-capped peaks, green parks, public squares with

stylish cafes bars and restaurants along with its commercial centers, and friendly cizens added to our holiday spirit.

Almaty, sure has a lot up its sleeve. About 190 kilometres from Almaty are the Charyn canyons – world's second largest, next only to Grand Canyons of Colorado. Aer crossing the Charyn Naonal Park, there is a track that leads to the canyons. The canyons stretch over 150 kms along the Charyn river, where Mother Nature using her tools of wind, water and sand has sculpted the red sandstone to mul-colored rock layers with rare and colorful formaons of different sizes and shapes almost like a river of connuous sculptures.

To our pleasant surprise appeared “biryani” which we relished amidst the “Valley of Castles”. Some adventurous members tracked down about 100 metres on to the river bed, which is a dry zone of the gorge called the Red canyon. Picture-perfect and a fantasc, eco-friendly cars for pick up and drop make this a superb experience.

The Big Almaty Lake is another “Must See”. Absolutely untouched, surrounded by mountains and crystal clear waters. Shymbulak, a Ski resort with a panoramic view has to be visited in a cable car while Kobe Tek -T V Tower is very close to the city. “The Falcon Show” has 64 species of eagles/falcon, some in capvity and some free flying - all trained to perform.

There was an unforeseen development too. The bus carrying the members of RCB Hanging Garden (Host Club), had a breakdown. Unfazed by the situaon the Gardenites converted this into a “pit stop” of fun, enjoyment, photo-ops along with snacks pickles and tea-coffee for almost 2 hours ll one of the busses returned to ferry them to the canyons. Thankfully, driver's experse came in handy when he, singlehandedly, repaired the bus ready to take all, back to the restaurant for dinner, drinks and dance. A long day for sure, a hot meal, a hot tub bath was all one needed before rering to rise for yet another day.

Day four saw us taking Gondola rides, three ski lis, to reach the highest point of the Shymbulak ski resort. The mountain ranges are at about 7200 above sea level. With every climb we witnessed *a breathtaking visual of the snow clad mountains, and the view beneath.

Now the shopping bug bit most of us and we set off to Green Bazaar. A few opted for a peaceful aernoon siesta, whereas some others, proceeded

to see yet another nature's marvel, the BIG Almaty Lake, located at an altude of over 2500 mtrs. It is said that depending on me of the year the

lake changes its color from light green to turquoise blue

It is said that, no event is complete without a fing finale….and what beer way to end a wonderful 4 day rotary picnic than with a Rotary meeng. A moment of pride and privilege for RID 3141 in general and the RC Bombay Hanging Garden in parcular when a Joint internaonal Rotary meeng of RC of Almaty (Dist 2430) with over 20 Rotary Clubs of Mumbai under DG Shashikumar Sharma was held on August 4, 2018 in Almaty, Kazakastan, a unique occasion where Guests were the Hosts. The official proceedings began when President Digant Shah called the meeng to order with the naonal anthems of both the naons being sung by the respecve members. PDG Lata Subaraidu welcomed Prez. Ms Tolkyn with Mr Mukhtar, Secr Amir Kabulov and other members of RC of Amlaty , followed by PDG Rahul Timbadia who briefly gave an overview of the work done by RID 3141 and welcoming the guest club with open arms for taking the cause of rotary forward. Congratulang individually the team members involved in the accomplishing this mammoth task of an internaonal picnic of over 150 members , the first ever of this magnitude, followed the customary exchange of flags between the clubs making this a memorable occasion for all. In his brief speech the DG not only gave his outlook for the current Miracle Year but also showed his keenness at working on a global grant project with the RC of Almaty for making and upgrading toilet facilies for tourists. Prez Tolkyn reciprocated the senment equally which was echoed by Rtn Leila & Rtn Madina. Pleasing to see Rtrs Ksenia and Elnara aend the meet and express their thoughts. Rtn Jaipalji shared his experience about the health issue he faced and efficiency with which the Kazak doctors treated him and that too at no cost. The meeng ended with vote of thanks by DGN Sunil Mehra along with thanking all the members who have joined this trip and specially congratulang, Sameer/Sonia, the host club and its members for arranging this wonderful trip to Almaty saying, “Take a bow RCBHG”. And finally a word of thanks for Rtn Amrish Daary for coordinang, arranging and rescheduling this meeng with RC of Almaty.

The last day, at 2 am all were up and ready to leave for the Airport to proceed back home whereas a small team of 19 Rotarians extended their vacaon to explore the beaues of St Petersburg & Moscow, taking this wonderful fellowship to its concluding moments. Even at this hour members were given food packets, and this was the care and love that differenated this picnic.

When we le on August 5, it was with mixed feelings. Our trip was geng over but our journey in Rotary connued with new friends in a new country. Old friendships were renewed, new friendships formed and all bid Adieu promising to be in touch. Our sincere 'Thank You' to D G Shashi Sharma, the driving force of the event who has managed to create one more Miracle.

District Governor Rtn. Sashi Sharma understands the pulse of Rotarians. His desire to have an evolved Rotary movement in India has made

him request me, whom he considers as a ‘thought leader,' to write about my journey in Rotary. While accepng his request, I humbly but

proudly script a period of my life in Rotary. This period is where I have been able to influence the desny of a sizeable fracon of humanity.

When India was on the threshold of geng freedom in 1947, I was born in July in a family known for the richness of its culture. Today my

father, Shri. Mulkraj Mahajan and my mother Shrimathi Rajrani, are guiding me from their heavenly abode and to them I owe the skills I have

acquired.

When I joined the Rotary Club of Mulund in 1973, I saw people around me in the club embracing the religion of posivism. As the President of

the club in 1982, I began to look at tomorrow from where I was standing during those days. I noced that in Rotary a paradigm shi was taking

place as it moved into a mulpolar organizaon.

As the District Governor in 1993, I realized that the future of Rotary was in the hands of this generaon. Adding over 700 members with 20

new clubs and raising US $2,58,000 for TRF. I was instrumental in raising almost US $160,000 towards the rehabilitaon of the Latur

earthquake vicms. Being a year of achievement in every sphere of Rotary, it was a joy to see our District Conference being telecast on local

TV channels. The Brish Broadcasng Corporaon also found it suitable to give coverage for seven minutes.

As the Director of Rotary Internaonal during 2007-2009, I was able to movate every district in India on membership development. This

resulted in membership climbing to over 1,10,000. What is one important skill that Rotarians should possess to aract others into the

fold? They must have the skill to sr up the human side within people. So, if srring up humanity is a technique that will increase

membership in Rotary, then you can't do it to a crowd. You have to do it one at a me and it is a connuing process.

Rotary in India changed largely because of the explosion of high-quality informaon the members got through our regional magazine, Rotary

News, which came under my wings for guidance. The contents of the magazine were inspiring to the readers and it also captured the

aenon of Rotary leaders worldwide. I must appreciate the efforts of the then Editor who helped me in this task.

The magazine, which was earlier underulized by the members, rose in stature and the paid subscripon increased tremendously. The

magazine's leadership posion vis-a-vis the other regional magazines was maintained ll 2013. The magazine did the work of taking India to

the world. The interviews I did with nearly all the top Rotary leaders worldwide was published in the magazine. This helped Rotarians across

the country to know about their leaders, their thoughts, philosophies and how Rotary funconed.

As a member of the India Naonal Polio Plus Commiee for over ten years I was able to promote the polio eradicaon programme in

Maharashtra. Being a Co-Ordinator for the Polio Eradicaon Private Sector Iniave, I was fortunate to make a detailed presentaon to

Shrimathi Rajashree Birla. Impressed by the work Rotary was doing in this field, Shrimathi Birla readily consented to support our cause. Ever

since I was elected R I Director, the noble lady has weighed in every year with a donaon of US $ One million, a magnificent gesture which is

helping our connuous fight to eradicate polio.

My idea of forming the Muslim Ulema Commiee helped in eradicang polio from India earlier than expected and was recognized as a great

iniave by the Government.

My tenure as The Trustee of The Rotary Foundaon from 2009 to 2013 was excing. TRF contribuons in India became transparent to every

Rotarian as the district contribuon stascs were published monthly. The contribuons to The Rotary Foundaon in India rose beyond US $

14 million for the first me. We cannot have a plan to develop Rotary when the members in the club are bystanders. Rotary has to again

become member-centric and ethics must take the center stage if we have to regain the confidence of the public.

Is a Rotarian, who has delivered more than what was expected out of him, become electable to higher leadership posions unless there is a

group wishing for it? I found that for such a person, the priories are many and not just posions. My early steps in Rotary and my journey

thereaer were supported fully by my wife Nayantara and children Nikhil and Namrata. My brothers and their families stood firmly by my

side to support all challenging projects that came up in Rotary.

My journey in Rotary has been full of learnings. In the words of Albert Einstein, which I have slightly modified, “Many of the things you

thought you can count on, don't count and many of the things you thought you need not count really count.” It is said that 'the best way to find

out if you can trust somebody is to trust them,' and in this journey I have always had trustworthy people around me for which I am eternally

grateful to God. Rotary is an organizaon oozing with people of mulple talents. It is one of the world's most respected and admired

instuon that serves the community in innumerable ways. I am an eternal opmist and a passionate believer in Rotary's ideals so my

journey connues and I must end by saying, “I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep.”

The once in a century deluge that swamped Kerala has caused untold misery. While the state limps back on its feet, looking back we find groups of common

individuals were the heroes of the rescue operaons. The feats of these groups are the ones that could be case studies on human behaviour and also be the

template for future disaster management.

At the height of the crisis when the Naonal Disaster Response Force struggled to rescue marooned people, local fishermen turned out to be saviours.

Fishing boats of all sizes were boarded on to trucks and let loose in inundated areas. 952 fishing boats manned by over 4500 fisherfolks rescued close to

1,50,000 people trapped in their houses and ferried them to relief camps. What is amazing is these fisherfolks worked as small teams without any overall

chain of command taking spot decisions according to ground zero realies. These fishing boats constuted their tools of trade for earning a living. But

undaunted by the damage that could be caused navigang uncharted territory, these brave fisherfolks were shining example of humanity. In many cases

these poor fishermen even refused the reimbursement of fuel expenses.

Kerala based news channels showed the way to the whole naon on disaster reporng. Unlike what we have been used to in the mainstream news channels,

there was no screaming, shoung and finger poinng. Sombre reporng of facts was the order of the day. News channels also doubled up as call centres

fielding calls from desperate people. Details of these struck people were forwarded to the nearest rescue crew. This tragedy was unfolding in the run-up to

Onam, the biggest fesval of Kerala. These news channel had crores of rupees of adversements in the can. But in a brave decision, channels desisted from

airing these adversements and used the me slots in rescue acvies thereby forgoing sizeable revenue.

As the magnitude of the disaster became known, help poured in from all quarters. A team of nearly hundred doctors from Mumbai and Pune flew into the

capital of the state in two Air Force planes with loads of medicines. They camped in the state for over a week.

While the Centre, several States and Corporates pitched in with money and relief materials, it is the magnanimity of the common man that shines as a

sparkling beacon. In the first two weeks aer the Chief Minister's appeal, 3.91 lakh people contributed 713 crores to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

Various relief acvies were undertaken by Rotarians of the District 3141. The District Governor also threw his weight behind the relief measures by

organising a funds collecon drive. This will be under the Chairmanship of PRID Ashok Mahajan and team of past and to-be-Governors. RIDE Dr. Bharat

Pandya is also part of this iniave. The funds collected are proposed to be used for repairing of schools in consultaon with Rotary Governors of the afflicted

areas.

At the grass root Club level in our District we have seen iniaves for the flood relief. RC of Boisar Industrial town had its President, Meera Nair hot foot to st thKerala with relief materials. From 1 September to 5 September, President Meera along with Amrita Ashok spent me in relief camps. A part of the corpus

that the Club had collected was spent in sponsoring a medical camp at Kuyatoor near Kodungallur. A relief camp at DD Saba School at Chennamangalam

was visited. The piful sight of the school having lost benches, laptops and records moved the heart of Rotarians. The students staying nearby were also th th thsimilarly affected with their houses inundated. Idenfying students of Class 8 , 9 and 10 , who had lost all their belongings, RC Bosra Industrial Town

donated books to these needy students. The team also visited a house which had lost the head of the family to the floods. Jinu Prasad, the orphaned boy thlooked lost. RC of North Paravur promised to donate a sewing machine to Jinu's mother in a bid to help her earn a living. Jinu, who is now in 8 Standard has

been promised his educaonal needs ll graduaon would be taken care off by Rotary Club of Boisar Industrial town. This is going to be a mul-year on going

project for the Club.

Inner wheel of Borivali too were in the forefront of providing relief. In the immediate aermath of the floods, to quell the outbreak of diseases, medicines

were needed. Buoyed by generous collecons from Inner Wheel members, they arranged for medicines. Tying up with the local Malayalee Samajan, the

‘TwoFruitswithOneStone'.JIVIKA-ACaseStudy

“The liberaon of the earth, the liberaon of women, the liberaon of all humanity is the next step of freedom we need to work for, and it's the next step of peace that we need to create” says Vandana Shiva, a famous Indian scholar, and environmental acvist. When we embarked on a project to meet the need of the hour, hardly did we envisage that we were about to work towards the fulfilment of these objecves she outlines in the above quote.

Plasc waste is largely seen along the shores and waterways of India. Much of it is not recycled, and ends up in landfills or as lier on land. Aer the unprecedented floods in God's own country Kerala, the shocking heaps of plasc floang on the waterways was shocking and unsightly. For the first me, researchers have esmated the amount of plasc that makes its way into the oceans. A research paper published recently in the journal Science has idenfied the top 20 countries that have dumped the most plasc waste into the oceans. At twelh posion, India is one of the worst performers. It has dumped up to 0.24 million tonnes of plasc into the ocean every year; the amount of mismanaged plasc waste per year is 0.6 million tonnes.

India, which hardly recycles plasc waste, has its task cut out. Plasc waste generated per person in India is very low. The huge populaon offsets the advantage of low plasc consumpon in the country. Cung down on the use of plasc should also begin in earnest, and the first item that has to be targeted is the single-use plasc bag. As part of Swachch Bharat Mission, Maharashtra banned use of plasc bags. Now the public, earlier used to vegetables, flowers, food and even juices parceled in plasc bags, now needed a convenient foldable light weight alternave.

We, at the Women Empowerment Team of Rotary Club of Mumbai Western Elite iniated project JIVIKA, meaning 'Source of life.' Jivika, originated as a thought. We started searching for women to stch cloth bags at Pimpripada and Santoshnagar slums. We gave them fabric and specificaons to make sample bags. Will this work? Will this project be sustainable? How do we source material, and where do we find buyers for the bags? Will these women connue to work with commitment and discipline? Will they deliver if we take advances ahead of orders? Anxiety mounted, but we sidelined the negavity and decided to go ahead with the chalked-out plan. Our members never red of pulling out fabrics from their homes. More and more ladies from these slums joined the team for stching; the few retailers we contacted and enthusiasc members gave momentum to this project.

These women diligently churn out perfectly stched cloth bags. The fire in the belly to earn more money to support their families probably made them burn the candle at both ends. Looking at their excitement as they counted the money, probably for a moment even we lost sight of the inial objecve that mooted the project - to protect mother earth from toxic plasc bags. These environmental friendly bags are reusable and washable, light weight, economical, and sturdy. Each me we hand out a bundle of these to buyers, a small twinkle of hope glimmers in our hearts – that we are inching towards a plasc-free society and in a small but significant way we have prodded this.

This project currently supports about 40 ladies. For some, it is the only source of income and for a few it supplements their income. A few voices that touched our hearts:

“I live in a Chawl in Pimpripada, with three children. We come from a very poor family. My husband was a daily wage earner. Aer my husband's demise last year, I had no idea how we would live, what we would eat, how would my children study. But tailoring cloth bags came as an unexpected rescue route for us. This is something I can do at home, while in front of me, my children go about their studies or have their food. It is a safe occupaon, simple task and I am happy that my amateurish sewing skills also came to be a big pillar of support for my family. This is the only source of income for my family.”- Gita Giri

“I live in Jogeshwari East. My husband works in a bouque and does machine embroidery. We have three kids. They are going to school. His salary was barely enough to support our family and finance the educaon of our children. When I started stching bags, I was able to buy a new sewing machine. Today I feel happy that I am able to use my skills to educate my kids and support my family” – Shakuntala Kanojia

We have air bags, and punching bags, a bag of bones and a bag of nerves, bag of tricks and bag of wind, slime bag, and doggy bag. But when the bag of curse and the bag of saving grace is one and the same, it is tough to touch it, let alone eradicate it; yes, we are talking of the inescapable omnipresent all-purpose single use plasc bag. You buy so idlis, and presto, a plasc bag comes as a savior to pack the liquid chutney and hot sambar. On the highway you suddenly see fresh vegetables, and with a swish the vendor packs all you need in that thin plasc bag. Your milk packet leaks and out comes the one-me use plasc bag. Your clothes got dirty and you can't stuff them with the good ones in suitcase, never worry. The eternal savior plasc bag is on its way. Your shoes got muddled; so what, the ubiquitous black bag is always there. This one-minute wonder that saves us in tricky situaons slowly has seeped into our lives like the East India Company and now established its tyrannical rule like the Brish Raj. They clog our drains and our guers overflow causing stench and diseases. Aer every rain, unsightly dirty snking plasc bags are scaered everywhere. A strategic war against these so invasion into our lives has started in full swing,

Deciding to work shoulder to shoulder with the Government of India in its “Swachhata hi Sewa” iniave by the Government of India, the District Governor Shashi Sharma and his team conceptualized the Esteem Project Swachh Mumbai. Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of District 3141 have been organizing a variety of projects every day between September 15, 2018 and October 02, 2018. The beaches of Chowpay, Dadar, Juhu and Marve received a vigorous clean-up at the break of dawn on September 24, a day aer Ganesh Visarjan. The plasc bags that sprouted like pimply eyesores with every wave suddenly disappeared before noon. Over 1100 Rotarians and Rotaractors from 60 Rotary and Rotaract clubs parcipated in this task together. BMC too officially partnered with Rotary. Congratulaons to the Presidents and members of Rotary and Rotaract Clubs. On July 31, 2018, around 7 tons of waste was removed from the Priyadarshini beach, Napeansea Road, with the joint efforts of Rotary Club of Mumbai Harbour, Members of Priyadarshini Park, MCGM staff & children from Municipal Schools. “Acve parcipaon of cizens was essenal to keep beaches clean” said Mr. V. Mote, Asst. Municipal Commissioner [D Ward]. DNA, leading Mumbai Daily covered the details of this drive in its edion of August 1, 2018. The balance waste will be removed soon.

The futurisc approach came with distribuon of cloth bags to achieve a target of 1 million bags during the year. This one project will address four focus areas of Rotary. This will promote well-being of mother and child as mothers get a regular stream of income; cleanliness and sanitaon is promoted by reducing plasc waste in the city; disease prevenon is achieved by reducing breeding of flies, mosquitoes that infest drains clogged with thin plasc bags; growing local economies by giving jobs and income for stching and prinng units. In just three months about 60000 cloth bags have been distributed to general public and members. Rotary Clubs of Bombay, Bombay Powai, Mumbai Green City, Mumbai Queens City, Mumbai South, Bombay North, Mumbai Green City, and Bombay Queen City have played a pivotal role in this. Even the President of the Rotary Club of Almaty Rtn. Tolkyn Abildayeva who received this at the District Picnic was enthused by this iniave.

A logical step to deal with waste started with distribuon of Handbook on Waste Management of Housing Sociees. This Handbook, which gives step-by-step guidelines for waste management of Housing Sociees in Mumbai, was released for free distribuon thru all 90+ Rotary Clubs in R. I. Dist. 3141. The authors Dr. Vani Kulhalli & Mr. Yogen Parikh, Environment Specialists have authorised Dist. 3141 thru R. C. of Mumbai Green City to print 4000 copies of this booklet. The Objecve is to enhance awareness among cizens for implementaon of MCGM Rules [2016] for Swachh Mumbai by Housing Sociees. Rotary Clubs of Mumbai Green City, Mumbai South & Bombay North sponsored the first lot of 2000 copies of this booklet. Rotary Clubs, Housing Sociees & MCGM have appreciated the efforts of Dist.3141 These projects are spearheaded by DRR Hansika Sahani and Rohan Dalmia, Swachh Avenue Group Head Rajendra Agarwal, Miracle Presidents Shivketan Gupta, Sanatan Mody and Rakesh Agarwal, and Avenue Chair, Raanchand Murarka.

One of the major challenges faced by mankind is global warming. The fast depleng forest cover is one of the prime reasons for this adverse change in

climate. One of the thrust areas for our District is to increase the forest cover in our neighbourhood. An ambious target to plant one million trees this year

has been given by our Governor Shashi Sharma to the team. To take this forward, the RC Boisar Industrial Town Rotary Club iniated a move to plant one lakh

trees in Jawahar district. The mega project was headed by Project Director, Narayan Mohite and overseen by the President of Boisar Industrial club, Meera thNair. Twenty other clubs from the district joined in this project. On a murky friday morning on 27 July 2018, Rotarians from across the district assembled

near Manor on the Mumbai Ahmedabad road. Aer a quick breakfast by 57 nature loving Rotarians, a convoy of a dozen cars made their way to Jawahar. The

host Club had thoughully provided the team with green jerseys.

The colour green was appropriate as we were on the quest to increase the green cover on earth. Driving through narrow roads but picturesque surroundings,

the convoy reached Gokhale College. A rousing welcome awaited the Rotarians. A local tribal dance by the college students set to music by two tribal

musicians was entertaining. The girls ared in their bridal finery swaying to the music was a treat to watch. Some of the Rotarians were so enamoured by the

dance performance, they too joined in shaking a leg. This was followed by a procession by the students carrying placards and shoung slogans on the need to

plant trees and increase the forest cover. The slogans chanted by the students were quite catchy and topical. Villagers who heard the slogans will also have

realised the need for planng trees and it is expected they will do their mite. Aer a short drive from the college we reached the area which was earmarked

for the mass planng of trees.

The District Forest Officer, Amit Mishra in collaboraon with the Rotarian Narayan Mohite and President Meera Nair had made arrangements for pits to be

dug for planng of saplings. These pits were spaced out in such a way that it would not impede in the growth of the trees over the years. Saplings of Karanj,

Laburnum, Peepal, Tamrind amongst other hardy plants were planted. Each Rotarian planted at least one tree during the drive. It was quite an experience in

having a small sapling being manoeuvred into a pit and then filling the pit by shovelling mud over it. As the small sapling swayed in the breeze, one could just

visualise the massive tree into which it could grow in the years to come. Our District Governor, Shashi Sharma and other district dignitaries were acve

parcipants in this tree planng spree. It was quite a sight watching senior city bred Rotarians going about planng trees with the seriousness it deserved.

Frequent sharp showers did not dampen the spirits of determined Rotarians who actually enjoyed the rains.

The lead club had taken a self-imposed target of planng a minimum of 10000 trees in this edion. This target was accomplished. This will go a long way in

the overall achievement of planng one million trees this year. Once the plantaon part was over, the team trudged back to the college. A sumptuous village

lunch was laid out for the team. Post lunch, it was me for acknowledgments. President Meera Nair welcomed the gathering and invited the Project Director

to take over. The Project Director, Narayan Mohite gave out brief details of the project and what was accomplished during the course of the last week in this

mega tree plantaon drive. The help rendered by the college principal, Manohar Meshram was acknowledged.

The Principal was happy to help this naonal cause and invited Rotarians to partake his hospitality for future projects. The District Forest Officer, Amit Mishra

came up with a refreshing atude. He expressed his delight in seeing Rotary take up this cause. He pledged all help from the forest department. He was one

of the main driving forces in ensuring the success of the project. He arranged for 10000 pits to be dug by the villagers. These pits were dug by the villagers

without charging any money. The co-ordinaon stched by the Forest Officer with the villagers and Rotary Club will go a long way in the sustenance of the

project in the long run. Members of RC Boisar Industrial Town Rotary Club needs to be complimented for this mely project. Project Director, Narayan Mohite

and President Meera Nair deserves kudos for a well-conceived and implemented project.

Twenty Clubs in the district who co-hosted the project deserves honourable menon for their foresight in supporng a project so far from their home base.

With all round sasfacon on a job well done, Rotarians trudged back to their respecve bases with a promise to comeback and connue with the next

edion of the project.

All the IW Clubs of District 314 have been planng trees in the INNER WHEEL FOREST from past 5 years. It was a garbage dump which has been transformed

into a lushgreen forest with trees and flowers.Ecological balance is coming back to the area.Beauful birds have already started vising this lovely forest. This

was only possible because of our dedicated IW members and great support and guidance from the Municipal and Forest department officials.

On 5th August, 2018 The Trek to PEB fort was iniated not only taken to bring Zones or clubs together, but to bring hearts

closer to each other. We take pride in saying that we brought hearts of Over 750 + Rotaractors to one place, with just one

mission: a beer bond.

The aim was to bring all the rotaractors together & Spread awareness on how Trek can help to connect to nature & health. This

was the largest trek in our District as no trek has ever crossed such huge parcipaon in the past. We are ready with many

innovave iniaves to create that ONE SOCH to bring INSPIRATION in the Rotaract Movement.

The Trek to Peb Fort was an iniave not taken to bring zones or clubs together, but to bring hearts closer to each other. Our

team focused on its promoon for over a month, team Zones and Club Service promoted the project on social media, at club

projects and Installaons alike, we made sure the buzz doesn't go unheard unl the D-day. All district council members started

promong the project at their residences and cooperaves, so as to bring in more non rotaractors to the project and

introducing them to the dynamics of our organizaon. Since we had an enormous number of parcipants, we divided the

squad into four, by zones.

Every Zonal team took trains at 20 minute intervals to Neral, Maharashtra. By 10.00am, the final count was 700 at Neral

Railway Staon. One by one, each zonal team began its expedion towards Jumapa, Peb. The trekkers were provided with

refreshments throughout and it was ensured that the trek is ring but on overbearing. Aer a 6 kilometer long haul to Peb, the

trekkers enjoyed the beauty of the waterfalls and the forests.

The Trek was an iniave to bring people together and have a power packed inaugural event along with the clubs. The other

move was to improve bonding amongst our council members and presidents/secretaries, as they'd be working in unison for

the rest of the year. Lastly, to make sure that we as the upcoming voices of society, learn to appreciate nature.
