When I took over the role as Chairperson from Louise last March I never appreciated the variety of subjects I would be involved with, their is never a dull moment. But despite the role being time consuming, it is also very rewarding to see so many swimmers from our club do so well at all levels.

As part of Nairn Swimming Club each and every swimmer has achieved so much throughout the year. Whether it has been joining through our new initiative of ' swim camp ' , competing in their first in house competition, winning medals and tropheys, being selected for HST , District , National or British events . Helping coach younger swimmers poolside or getting fitter through the land training programme, or just by simply making friends in the club there are many special memories in the last year for everyone.

The standard of swimming continues to improve and I am sure we are all very grateful to our head coach Val , and the many other coaches that contribute so much time to the swimmers and club. I would urge you all to remember that everyone of our coaches is poolside to help the swimmers and please respect all the coaches.

Membership numbers have varied over the year, because those who have left through the natural process are not always replaced in such great numbers. But with our first Swim Camp being introduced in January of this year has proved very successful with the next due to commence shortly.

Tonight the treasurer will present the accounts and her financial report. The club can only remain financially viable if everyone helps, the keen small group of fundraisers

who are always looking for those who do not fill another role in the club to assist them.

I would like to make a special mention to Alison, who is stepping down from her role as secretary. I personally have appreciated all the support and guidance she has shown me over the past year. Finally I would like to thank all the committee, those that have chosen to step down, and to those who have kindly chosen to fill any vacant roles, the club could not run successfully without you all.

I would normally talk at this point about last years objectives but many are still a work in progress so will take time later to discuss.

With thanks Inez

6. Head Coach Report: Val Walker

HEAD COACH’S REPORT:

It has been another very busy year for NDASC with some highs and some lows this year. A definite high however was our achievement of SwiMark Plus in December. We are one of only a small group of clubs in Scotland who have this award.

Page 8: MINUTES OF 2015 AGM - s3.spanglefish.coms3.spanglefish.com/s/2759/documents/ndasc agm...  · Web viewWe trialled some long course training for Gold Elite in ... Undertake a dietetics

We were pleased as a club to be asked to speak at the Scottish Swimming National Conference in Glasgow last summer about our growth as a club as well as being invited to assist with the District Regional Programme on the coaching team. Both were enjoyable events, raising the awareness of our small club. In addition to these initiatives, we were asked to do a short presentation of our DSE swimmer at a coach seminar in Aberdeen on disability coaching. A further invite has recently been received to do a slightly bigger presentation at the National Academy in April. At the start of the year in 2014 there were continued difficulties with slow movement of swimmers from the lesson programme into the club. However we have been successful in setting up a very positive liaison with the pool management who have supported us in the development of Swim School. Whilst it took continued drive by the club and the assistance of the Regional Development Manager, Ewan Stirling, to keep momentum behind the initiative we completed a six week programme with all but one of the participating swimmers entering the club. We plan to run this again in the foreseeable future and would like to thank Ewan for his help. Our membership is stable at between 60 - 70 swimmers at present. Throughout the year the squad structure was redesigned to introduce Gold Elite and amalgamate the fitness swimmers with Gold Squad. This has created an aspirational pathway in our programme that seemed to be ‘flattening’ out. The development has worked well and has enabled us to allow swimmers who no longer wish to compete to continue to be part of Gold Squad, avoiding them being streamed off into a fitness squad and potentially feeling devalued. Our positive relationship with Highland Swim Team continues however it has been a difficult year with a review of the training model by Scottish Swimming. At the point of writing this report we are uncertain what the future of HST will look like and are very concerned. Jeff has been a solid support to Nairn since I took over as head coach 8 years ago and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank him for his input.

The competitive focus as a primary aim of the club continues. The programme remains 200m IM based and delivered according to Long Term Athlete Development Plan (LTAD)Bronze Squad:

Bronze B, the development group, train at 4pm alongside the Swim School recruits and work on ‘Swim Skills’. Bronze A train alongside Silver Squad on club night and work between ‘Training to Train’ and ‘Swim Skills’. Silver Squad:

This squad is working well with a strong emphasis still on technique. Some work is on building strength and aerobic conditioning. In relation to the LTAD model these swimmers are at the top end of ‘Swim Skills’ and progressing well into ‘Training to Train’. They are our early competitive group with some involved in the Junior Development Squads of Highland Swim Team. Gold Squad – Active and Occasional Competitor:

This is our largest squad and includes both the younger active competitors and some older occasional competitors. Those who do not wish to compete are now accommodated here. Gold Squad’s work is also aligned with LTAD working mostly on ‘Training to Train’. Gold Elite:

This squad was introduced throughout the course of the year and is working well. There is a strong presence from this group at regional and district competitions with some competing at national level. It is fully anticipated that those previously involved will maintain a presence in the District Regional Programme (DRP) next season. Three have already achieved their Bronze times and may yet achieve sufficient for Silver. Two additional swimmers, now too old for the DRP, may progress to the Youth Squad programme. Both still require one more long course time for Silver level with one swimmer already having achieved times comfortably for Bronze. We

have one swimmer about to attend a national stroke camp in April and are very proud to have had the north district junior champion from this group, achieved last October. Most of this group have top ten Scottish ranked times and one has a 5 th in Britain ranked time. In recent weeks we have had an invite for our DSE swimmer to participate in the World Games. Competitions

The club continues to enjoy a high profile and success at regional competitions. Many of our swimmers are enjoying taking part in competition in-house, locally and away from home. Both regionally and nationally we are well represented for the size of our club. Many of our swimmers continue to meet the criteria for the North District Development Meets with several meeting the criteria for both Age Group Championships and District Open meets. We had an increased presence throughout the year at National events culminating recently with three swimmers participating at the International Meet in Edinburgh. Year on year we have had increasing numbers of swimmers making higher level events and achieving medal success. District competition involvement requires us to supply an appropriate amount of officials which is the main frustration to these swimmers being able to take part. The regulations clearly state that for 25 swimmers we must provide 6 Technical Officials for every session, at least two of which must be a Judge 1 or above and one must be a Judge 2 or above. Parents wishing their child to compete at this level really must come forward to support the process if they have not already done so. Poolside assistance and Coach training.

Thanks to fundraising we continue to enjoy regular coach development and attendance at educational workshops. The future development of the club depends on a strong knowledge and skill base in our coaching team. Due to some coaches leaving the club since last year’s AGM we are lower on Level 2

Page 11: MINUTES OF 2015 AGM - s3.spanglefish.coms3.spanglefish.com/s/2759/documents/ndasc agm...  · Web viewWe trialled some long course training for Gold Elite in ... Undertake a dietetics

and Level 1 qualified adult coaches than would be preferable. Several younger swimmers are now helping the coaching team and working on building their hours towards volunteering awards. When they are ready they will progress to their Level 1 course. One has now reached the age she can do the course and is ready with sufficient experience under her belt. We do still need some parents to come forward to assist the coaching team. I am extremely grateful to and would like to sincerely thank Fiona, Craig, Drew, Mandy and Debbie as our key adult coaching team. I would particularly like to thank Fiona who deputises for me while I am on leave. We welcome Steve McGregor on board as the newest member of the adult coaching team. Steve has transferred from Westhill District Swimming Club and is Level 1 qualified. I would also very much like to thank our senior swimmers who assist the programme – Rachael, Katie, Daniel, Finn, Annabel, Melissa, Madeline, Harry, Rory and Zoe. These youngsters add excellent support to the younger swimmers programme having experienced it themselves. The club remains committed to the personal development of its senior swimmers beyond the swim programme. Hopefully I have not missed anyone out! Coaching programme additional achievements

I am delighted to report that we have finally managed to implement a quality land based programme with the recruitment of Drew Johnston as Lead Land Trainer. This took a little time to settle in and whilst there were some challenges these have been overcome e.g. finding a winter venue. The programme is now well bedded in and adding value to the swimmers development. I’d like to thank Drew for his persistence and commitment.

We trialled some long course training for Gold Elite in Aberdeen at the new sports village. This worked very well and is something I would like to build into the programme as a more regular feature of training. Monthly would suffice.

Our close relationship with Grantown Swimming Club continues. Whilst the Saturday afternoon time in Inverness was no longer available we have worked together in Nairn when the synchro club do not need their pool slot and over the summer months.

Swim School was piloted just after Christmas and was very successful with some teacher time pledged by Highlife Highland. It is planned to run again between Easter and summer break. I am waiting on further word from HLH on whether teacher time will be pledged for another term.

We have a forthcoming club trip away to the Aberdeen Sports Village for combined long course training, land training and some high board diving instruction all planned. This is booked for 17th May.

Conclusion

In conclusion it is worthy of sincere thanks and a special mention to a very supportive committee who have trusted my judgement again throughout the year as we have progressed. Their drive behind the club organisation is exemplar and I am extremely grateful to them all. I would like to particularly thank Alison for her support as she steps down as Secretary. Alison has supported the club for many years now and has been a fabulous source of advice and guidance, particularly during difficult times.I’d also like to thank you all as parents for entrusting your children to the club. I remain mindful of this trust. NDASC belongs to the children; they are unique drivers of the programme however it is the adults who help make it happen. I would urge those sitting here today to consider being part of this very positive club either as part of the coaching team, becoming trained as officials to support competition or behind the scenes supporting fundraising and organisation of activities to enhance the development and experience of our swimmers.Thank You.
