Minority Male Success Summit:Succeeding at the Next Level

Program Overview

The Minority Male Success Summit was a program put on by Student Affairs to help encourage and equip African American and Hispanic males on the Calhoun Community College campus to be successful during and beyond their tenure here.

This two hour program took place on the eve March 8, 2012 at the Huntsville Campus Student Center and hosted approximately 50 students.

Local businessmen, teachers and former Calhoun students were invited to participate in a panel and roundtable discussions with students about succeeding at the next level academically/professional, financially, and mentally/emotionally.

Conclusions

This event was very successful. It is clear from the responses on the evaluations that the students enjoyed the event. Several students commented that they were very thankful for the event and would like to see more like it.

Suggestions/Implications

Minority male students are at a high risk for dropout. They are the least likely to attend college. Holding at least two events per semester will help in solidifying a sense of community among this student group.
