Loons Travel to Timbers as Playoff Race Heats UpMinnesota United is back on the road for a clash with the Portland Timbers in the national spotlight. The Timbers enter the game after facing New York Red Bulls on Wednesday and suffering a tough loss to D.C. United on the weekend. Portland has struggled to find form at their newly renovated home, but a plethora of attacking options makes the team extremely dangerous on the break. Confident after a big win against Real Salt Lake, the Loons try to cement their spot in the postseason with a victory at Providence Park, a venue where they have yet to claim a point. Currently with a five-point cushion above the playoff line, Minnesota’s main objective now is to hold on to a top-four spot and the home playoff game that comes with it.
Loons Come Back to Take All Three PointsAfter a disappointing midweek loss on the road, Minnesota United bounced back with a confident 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake. The visitors scored first just 17 minutes into the game, but the counterattacking Loons rallied for a quick response. Darwin Quintero got the equalizer just four minutes later, dancing past the goalkeeper and pinging the ball off of the inside of the post. He got his brace in the second half, blasting a shot through the legs of a defender toward the near post. Ethan Finlay would cap off the game with a finessed shot past the goalkeeper after receiving a cross from Romain Metanire. With the win, Minnesota leap-frogged RSL in the standings, rising to third in the Western Conference.

MNUFC GAME NOTES
2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES
Darwin Quintero Makes Team of the WeekMinnesota United returned to Allianz Field with a 3-1 win against Real Salt Lake on Sunday. After falling behind in the first half, Darwin Quintero led the charge for the Loons with two goals to start the comeback. For his efforts, Quintero has earned a spot in the MLS Team of the Week for Week 28.
This is the fourth time Quintero has made the Team of the Week this season, last featuring on the bench in Week 17. El Cientifico started the comeback for MNUFC just four minutes after giving up the opening goal against RSL, dancing his way past the goalkeeper and pinging the ball off the inside of the post. He got his brace six minutes after halftime, blast a shot through the legs of the defender and beating the goalkeeper on the near post.
Besides scoring goals on both of the shots he took during the game, Quintero played a role in creating chances during the game. He set up his teammates with eight passes in the final third, including two key passes and a successful through ball. He also drew two fouls to set up free kicks.
Adrian Heath on the Sunday’s Win Against Real Salt Lake“[I’m] delighted with the win, delighted with the performance, pleased that we managed to get [Kevin] Molino, [Robin] Lod and [Darwin] Quintero on the field, all looking sharp. I think that they are going to be big for us moving forward. In light of how the other results went for us, it couldn’t really have been a better day. We let ourselves down in Houston with a really poor performance but the reaction from the group, to bounce back, was excellent.”
Heath on if the Win Sets MNUFC On Its Way to the Playoffs“It does. I said a few weeks ago, I think it’ll go [the Western Conference playoff race] to the last game and I honestly think it will. I think it might get sorted before then, who’s in the playoffs, but where you finish, I think will go to the very last game because if you look at the fixtures, we’re nearly all playing each other at some stage. We go to Portland and then we’ve got SKC, we’ve got LAFC and then we go to Seattle so it’s not going to get any easier. The games are coming thick and fast. We’ve got some difficult games but we’ve given ourselves a really good chance of making the playoffs which is what the aim was before the season started. Now for us, it’s a case of can we push on and get a home field advantage in the playoffs because that would make everybody happy.”
Mason Toye on Bouncing Back After Houston to Beat RSL“It’s huge and we’ve bounced back a couple of times this year when we’ve had tough results and we’ve come back and [it’s] always gotten us on a bit of a run. It was a really big result for us, to win at home and to continue that win streak at home. It sets us up for a really tough matchup on Sunday against Portland.”
Toye on What Must Be Done to Stop Portland’s Play Style“It’s going to be difficult. [Playing] away from home is always difficult to play your game. I’m not exactly sure how we’re going to approach the game because that’s all up to the gaffer [Head Coach Adrian Heath]. As long as we come out strong and fast and really try to take the game to them and not just sit back and do what we did against Houston. As long as we go out there and work hard, I think we have a good chance at winning.”
MNUFC and Xcel Energy Welcome Home Minnesota National GuardMinnesota United and Xcel Energy partnered to recognize members of the Minnesota National Guard, both Army and Air Force, at the Minnesota United versus C.F. Pachuca International Friendly on Saturday, September 7. Members of the Minnesota National Guard proudly serve their community and country as citizen soldiers and airmen. In July, more than 650 Soldiers of the Minnesota Army National Guard’s 34th Red Bull Infantry Division returned home from the Middle East after a 10-month deployment to Kuwait. The Minnesota unit was responsible for leading U.S. Central Command’s Task Force Spartan, which increases military readiness and capability, in order to maintain regional stability and partnerships.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.
After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.
The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
