Operation: Score GoalsMinnesota United did everything right last Sunday night except score goals. The return of Jan Gregus and Bakaye Dibassy solidified the squad over the length of the field and helped deliver 57 percent possession over RSL. Yet the Loons could not find the back of the net. FC Cincinnati were also blanked by NYCFC, but were toppled 4-0 and looked broken down defensively as the home team weaved through their shape and dominated the run of play. Both squads will benefit from a full week of rest and training ahead of Saturday. FC Cincy will look to bring quality into Allianz Field, while the Loons will look to bring goals and leave with three points.

One Rainy Night and a Point, PleaseOn a rainy night in Saint Paul, Minnesota United squared off against visiting Real Salt Lake, intent on making the most of what amounts to a homestead of two back-to-back games in the continuing oddness of this season. Despite dominating possession for the entire game and ending up with more of the shots on goal and on target after the Loons began turning possession into opportunities in the second half, MNUFC were unable to find the back of the net in this one. The Loons would take the point, moving up in the Western Conference to sixth and looking ahead to another game at Allianz Field against FC Cincinnati next Saturday.

    MNUFC GAME NOTES

2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTESRecap: MNUFC Draw RSL at HomeOn a rainy night in Saint Paul, Minnesota United squared off against visiting Real Salt Lake, intent on making the most of what amounts to a homestead of two back-to-back games in the continuing oddness of this season.

Head Coach Adrian Heath on what needs to be better in the final third“Need more quality with the final touch. We created, what, four or five glorious opportunities, they hit the post. Probably two or three really good half chances, a couple other occasions where I don’t think the final ball was good enough, but alls we were missing was the final touch. I would have been more worried if we were not creating opportunities. We created an awful lot in the last game and I think at the weekend, if we create the same amount of chances, we put ourselves in a great spot to win the game.”

Defender Michael Boxall on facing FC Cincinnati“I think we’ve kind of underperformed in recent weeks and not gotten out of games what we expect of ourselves. We can’t take anyone lightly at all and especially at home, we need to take as many points as possible. With this week, we need to get as much work as we can in our legs, feeling fresh into Saturday and really get after Cincinnati because it’s a big three points with the West so tight.”

Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair on what’s made him successful in penalty kick saves“It’s a mental battle, trying to win the mental battle with the guys that’s going to take it. Try to delay, let the pressure build up in scenarios and just committing to a decision and going for it and kind of forcing the attacker to beat me instead of diving early and allowing him to put it wherever he wants.”

MNUFC Acquire $600k and 2021 Draft Pick in Trade with Montreal ImpactMinnesota United announced the club acquired $150,000 in 2020 General Allocation Money (GAM) and $450,000 in 2021 GAM and a 2021 second round MLS SuperDraft pick via trade from Montreal Impact for forward Mason Toye. Additionally, Minnesota will retain a percentage of any future transfer fee on Toye.

MNUFC Announces Remaining 2020 Regular Season Schedule Major League Soccer announced the schedule and broadcast details for the remainder of the 2020 MLS regular season. For the safety of our players, staff and fans, Minnesota United has made the decision to play games behind closed doors for the foreseeable future. We continue to monitor and evaluate the situation with the input of government and health officials. As in Phase 1, fans will be able to catch MNUFC games through our partners FOX Sports North and SKOR North.

Home Teams vs. HungerMinnesota’s sports teams including your Minnesota United in conjunction with FOX Sports North and sports media outlets across the state, announced “Home Teams vs. Hunger”—a public service campaign and fundraising initiative designed to showcase the power of teamwork as Minnesota’s sports community join forces to end hunger.

“Home Teams vs. Hunger” will take place Wednesday, Sept 23 through Wed, Sept 30. The week-long campaign will feature content and appearances by Minnesota’s pro sports athletes, coaches and executives, plus include unique give-back opportunities and many one-of-a-kind auction items up for bid.

Proceeds from the campaign will support Second Harvest Heartland and Minnesota’s five additional Feeding America food banks, serving 110 counties in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin.

Community members are invited to help by donating to hunger relief or participating in the campaign’s auction. Minnesota United created a special game package that includes two tickets to the first Minnesota United home game when the public is allowed back in the stadium at full capacity, along with two exclusive warm-up watcher passes, one MNUFC jersey and soccer ball signed by the entire 2020 team, and signed player photos. 2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMLS IS BACK COMPETITION FORMATMajor League Soccer returns with all 26 MLS clubs competing in the MLS is Back Tournament at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida beginning July 8. Group stage games will count in the MLS regular season standings and the tournament winner will earn a spot in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, replacing the berth previously awarded to the MLS regular season points leader in the conference opposite of the 2020 Supporters’ Shield winner.

Group assignments for each of the 26 teams were determined through a live draw on June 11, with Minnesota United being drawn into Group D alongside Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City and the Colorado Rapids. Similar to a FIFA World Cup format, the tournament will feature a continuous schedule of games nearly every day, with games beginning at 8 a.m., 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. CDT. The majority of the games will be played in the evening. Each team will play three group stage games, with those results counting in the 2020 MLS regular season standings. After 16 consecutive days of group stage games, the top two teams from each group along with the four best third-place finishers will move on to the knockout stage. The knockout stage will include Round-of-16, Quarterfinals, and Semifinals rounds, as well as the Championship match on August 11. Games tied at the end of regulation in the knockout phase will proceed directly to a penalty kick shootout.

In addition to games that count in the regular season standings and the Champions League berth, players will have the opportunity to earn additional bonuses as part of a $1.1 million prize pool.

The substitution limit for the tournament will follow the new protocol set by the IFAB and allow five substitutions per game. In addition, teams may name up to 23 players on each official gameday roster. Also, the Professional Referees Organization (PRO) will have access to video review for all games.

Upon completion of the MLS is Back Tournament, MLS plans to continue its regular season with a revised schedule in home markets, followed by the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and the 25th MLS Cup. The schedule will be developed at a later date. The final number of games and the schedule for the remainder of the 2020 MLS regular season will be announced in the coming weeks.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 26 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and teams in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Starting in 2019, the league adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on to the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
