CHILDREN’S GARDENThe Children’s Garden is THE place for hands-on discovery, creativity, growing adventures, and nature fun. It’s a place where kids get to taste their accomplishments, use their imaginations, and build friendships while tending a kid-sized plot of fl owers and vegetables throughout the summer. All participants are invited to an evening garden celebration on Wednesday, August 15, 6-8 p.m. Fee includes snack, project supplies, Children’s Garden t-shirt, and cookbook.

of ways to experience the wonders of the Arboretum. Our camps offer an engaging mix of hands-on plants, science

adventure, imagination, art, food and exploring for ages 4-14. Food is as organic and local as possible. All classes take place

at the Marion Andrus Learning Center.

FOR FAMILIES - LET’S COOK TOGETHER!NEW! We’ve listened to your feedback and are happy to now off er smaller class sizes

and multiple dates and age groups for our popular family cooking classes. Families with younger kids make lunch together, with a focus on safety and fun in the kitchen at a pace perfect for small hands and short attention spans. Families with older children make an early supper together, with the ability to focus on more advanced cooking techniques at a more age-appropriate pace. Families who wish to bring two or more children that cross the age group distinctions are encouraged to simply make a choice that best fi ts their family.

JUNE 29: IMPRESSIONIST GARDEN PAINTING (993-06-29-12)Using the Arboretum as inspiration, and with artist Gretchen Wagener as a guide, create

an impressionist-style painting. Learn how to mix and blend colors for desired eff ects.

JULY 13: CLAY SCULPTURE (993-07-13-12)Walk the Arboretum grounds and sketch inspiring plants or wildlife. Th en use your sketches to guide your creation of a clay sculpture. Taught by artist Gretchen Wagener.

JULY 27: BASKET WEAVING (993-07-27-12)Weave bamboo reeds into a basket with the help of experienced basketry teacher Nancy Nelson. Take home additional reed material for a future creation! Diff erent projects each summer.

AUGUST 10: SCULPTING NATURE (993-08-10-12)Create sculptures from natural materials. Use woodworking tools like hand saws and cordless drills; learn quick, clever ways of joining your materials. Taught by engineer Willis Bowman, co-designer and builder of the Arboretum’s “Under the Oak” nature play area.

GUIDED ADVENTURESGuided Adventures are perfect for daycare, scout, summer school or neighborhood groups wanting extra hands-on fun during an Arboretum visit. Dirt Detectives ages 3-5

Roll up your sleeves and unearth some of the mystery of dynamic dirt. Plant seeds and experiment to discover what plants need to grow. Venture outside to the Children’s Garden and look for clues to fi nd out how dirt is made.

Butterfl ies and Hummingbirds ages 6-12

What would it be like to taste with your feet or fl y upside down? Discover the amazing lives of butterfl ies and hummingbirds, our most colorful garden visitors. Learn how fast a hummingbird fl aps its wings, how a caterpillar changes into a butterfl y, and which fl owers these winged creatures prefer. Pot a plant to attract hummingbirds and butterfl ies to your garden at home.

snack! While your pretzel is baking, fi nd out about Minnesota’s grain growing and milling history. Take a close look at grains and discover the diff erences in the grains we use to bake

everything from cakes to hearty whole wheat bread.

SUNFLOWER SMASH - MAYSunfl owers! Butter, bread, cooking oil, livestock feed, biodiesel, and birdseed have all been made from these beautiful sunny fl owers. Try your hand at pounding toasted sunfl ower seeds into a delicious sunbutter treat. Can you grow a record size sunfl ower? Find out how to grow ’em big and select some seeds to plant.

DYNAMIC DIRT - JUNE Dig some dirt, mix up mud, and decorate mud pies in our mud kitchen. Become a dirt detective and use a microscope to see up close what soil is made of. Meet the decomposers that help create great garden soil and plant an experiment to discover what kind of soil grows garden plants best.

MARVELOUS MUD - JULY Mud is more than what you scrape off your garden boots! Mix, stir, scoop, dig, and sculpt in the Mud Kitchen. Create your own clay art or muddy masterpiece using materials found in the garden and marvelous mud. Mid month watch artists at work create a clay house in front of the Arboretum Learning Center.

DISCOVER SPRING PEEPER MEADOW! (CHILD + ADULT) 965-05-17-12 Tuesday, May 15, 12:15-2:15 p.m., $8 child of member/$10 child of non-member, limit 40 children, Marion Andrus Learning Center

Follow the boardwalk from dry to squishy, to underwater habitats, in the restored sedge meadow wetland. Use pond scoops and binoculars to survey what plants and animals live here now. Help monitor Arboretum scientists’ work to bring nature back in a former cornfi eld. Participants will need to drive to wetland during fi eld trip.
