PLANT DYES: CO LOR FROM THE GARDEN | 100-09-17-11 Saturday, September 17, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.$85 member/$90 non-member, All Levels, Hands-On / Demo, Limit 35, Learning CenterPlants provide us with many things—food, shelter, medicine and...color. Plants off er rich and luscious pigments for dyeing textiles. Th e trick is in knowing which plants produce what color. Learn the essentials of plant dyes. Explore the gardens to identify plants used to produce color. Experience fi ber preparation and mordanting as you cook up dyestuff s to reveal colors coaxed from the garden. Come to class ready to spend the day outdoors as much as possible. Dyeing is messy, wet and fun, so wear work clothes, bring rubber gloves and an old towel. Wool and materials needed for the dyeing process will be provided. Take home two 100-gram skeins of wool dyed in class, a color card with samples made from plants, and recipes for making them.

Th at rare opportunity highlights this class examining botanical illustration. Josephine’s interest in plants germinated while growing up in the Caribbean and culminated in her sending out explorers to obtain plants from around the world for her garden in France. Her desire to document her garden for posterity led to her patronage of one of the fi nest botanical illustrators of all time, Pierre Joseph Redouté. Learn about Josephine’s garden and see for yourself Redouté’s exquisite work in rare books published more than 200 years ago. Kathy Allen, head of Andersen Horticultural Library, will tell the story and turn the pages of these special volumes.

SPINNING PLANT-DYED WOOL ON A DROP SPINDLE | 100-10-29-11 Saturday, October 29, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m.$60 member/$65 non-member, All Levels, Hands-On / Demo, Limit 35, Snyder BuildingUsing a hand spindle to create a strong continuous strand is a skill with a long history. Learn to handle wool fi bers for spinning on a drop spindle, including carding, drafting and plying. If you already spin, bring your equipment along. If not, do not fret. Th ere will be drop spindles and material for everyone. You will receive clean uncarded fi ber dyed with plants from the Arboretum. Bring any other fi bers you wish to spin. With all the lovely yarn you will be spinning, you’re welcome to bring knitting needles. Fiber artist Kim Christensen uses stems, fl owers and berries to dye her woolen wares right in her backyard. You can see her Swagg line at the Kingfi eld Farmer’s Market, and at Frame-Ups Gallery in Minneapolis.

Th is series will examine: Th e Lost Garden by Helen Humphreys, assorted poetry, selections from Th e Faerie Queen by Edmund Spenser, In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens by Alice Walker, Say the Word by Denise Levertov, A Curtain of Green, and Old Herbaceous by Reginald Arkell. WINE-MAKING CLASSESA new series of wine-making classes off ering valid and timely research from the University of Minnesota and information from the industry, presented in accessible and enjoyable formats. New and tested resources will be presented to help you make wine that is wonderful to drink. Meet other winemakers and gain insights into the art of making wine from grapes and other fruits grown in this region. Work with University Enologist Katie Cook, who has made wine on four diff erent continents and has an advanced enology degree from the University of Burgundy. Find out which perennial and annual ornamental grasses are easy to grow in your garden. Mary Meyer, University of Minnesota professor and manager of the collection, will show you the newest grasses and which can be used for the problem areas in your garden. Class starts indoors and then continues in the collection. Dress appropriately for weather conditions.

Oswald Visitor Center Our planet faces challenges like overpopulation, over-consumption of resources, and climate change, which contribute to the decline of plants and animals around the globe. Photographers like Daniel Beltrá and Molly Steinwald heighten our awareness, making it more diffi cult to ignore the risks. Th rough images both beautiful and compelling, these photojournalists educate us about environmental degradation even as they convey a message of hope and restoration. Beltrá focuses our attention at the planetary level while Steinwald brings into view how nature speaks to us from “tiny bio-places.”

Participation in a photography workshop includes an invitation to participate in the Student Fine Art and Photography Exhibit and Sale in early December 2011 in the MacMillan Auditorium. Unique to the Arboretum, this holiday-season sale will feature greeting cards, prints, framed and unframed originals, and other art and gift items by 2011 Arboretum workshop participants.
