An intensive weekend during which you spend quality time with your camera out in the Arboretum’s collections from dawn to evening. Acclaimed photographer John Pennoyer will help you “see the light” and use it to improve your digital images. After understanding photography fundamentals in the classroom, you will immediately apply techniques to improve your photography by comprehending the roles of natural light. Note: Students should bring all of their camera equipment including tripod and the camera’s operating manual. It is also a good idea to bring a small fl ash light. Meals included.

Participation in a photography workshop includes an invitation to participate in the Student Fine Art and Photography Exhibit and Sale in early December 2012 in the MacMillan Auditorium. is best known for his atmospheric images of Duluth. After this workshop, your concept of a photographic self-portrait will never be the same. You will investigate

the idea of the photographic equivalent, concentrating on the work of Minor White, widely considered one of the great photographers of the 20th century.

Like cooking, writing is the process of pulling together the raw ingredients with inspiration and motivation to create a fi nished work of art. Food and rituals associated with it bring powerful emotions and can inspire strong writing. Published writer and educator Jules Nyquist, whose latest poetry chapbook is “Appetites: Poems on Food, Drink, Sex” (Beatlick Press, 2010) will show you how to use food as a metaphor through writing exercises that draw upon cultural images toward food, food rituals and preparation, gender, politics, body image and hunger. You will also delight in other favorites with acclaimed musicologist and pianist Daniel Freeman, Ph.D. Freeman has taught courses in music history at the University of Minnesota, other universities, and the Smithsonian Institution, and his research has focused on the music of composers Bach, Mozart, and Vivaldi.

Brower has dedicated his research to the overwintering and migration biology of the monarch butterfl y and the conservation of endangered ecosystems. As Distinguished Service Professor of Zoology Emeritus at the University of Florida and Research Professor of Biology at Sweet Briar College, he includes among his achievements the Royal Entomological Society of London Marsh Award, numerous scientifi c papers, fi lms, and books. Brower is currently writing his magnum opus on the monarch for Harvard University Press and working to protect overwintering forests in Mexico.
