Spring cleaning? Our Shoe Away Hunger Campaign is Here!

It is estimated that every day close to one out

of every ten Minnesota households struggles to

put enough food on the table for healthy living.

You can help make a difference for these

people by partnering with the Rock Solid 4-H

    Club!

Starting in early March, the donation of your

old soles to Shoes Away Hunger can help feed

a hungry soul. Your extra, unwanted shoes

(athletic shoes, boots, dress shoes, slippers, ice

skates, roller skates, etc.-new or used, ugly or

stylish-if it goes on your feet, it can be

donated) will provide a hungry Minnesotan

with up to one week of essential groceries. Not

only will a hungry Minnesotan receive needed

food, this is also an eco-friendly opportunity to

repurpose footwear and keep unwanted shoes

from cluttering up closets or sitting for years

    in landfills.

Bring your unwanted used footwear (all

conditions or smells accepted!) and deposit

them in the specially marked box in the 4-H

Building and other locations throughout town

from March 7th through April 15th. Last year

Mower County 4-H shoe donations fed about

    313 hungry Minnesotans!

Clothing, Fashion Review & Food Review Judging

Based on the feedback we received from the

survey we sent out to last year’s clothing,

fashion review and food review participants,

we have decided to hold the clothing/fashion

review and food review judging on separate

nights. Thank you to everyone who completed

    the survey!

This change will allow members who are

participating in both events to focus on their

    judging experience for each individual

competition. Furthermore, it will allow us to

start each judging event a bit later in the

evening, allowing families more time to get

there after work. On the survey, we continued

to hear that families wanted us to avoid

    weekend judging due to family

    trips/camping/livestock shows/sporting

    events and other conflicts.

Please save the dates for these judging

    experiences:

    Food Review: Tuesday, July 23rd

    Clothing/Non-Garment and Fashion

    Review: Tuesday, July 30th

We plan to share a detailed schedule after

evaluating participant numbers after the July

    15th Fair Registration deadline.

    VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

    Volunteers Sought for Project Workshops

Would you like to help 4-H members get a

“jump start” on their projects for the Mower

County Fair? We are hoping to put on a project

exploration day in the future where members

can come and do some mini make-and-take

    projects.

An example could be: a craft that could be a

project for around the home for the home

environment project. Or maybe a small craft for

    crafts & fine arts project.

If you have a mini project you could teach or

interested in learning more, please contact the

    STATEWIDE ARTICLES

How do we inspire youth to understand, relate and connect to other people?

I am passionate about an idea called global

citizenship. Many people, when I tell them this

is my specialty area, assume I’m describing

some sort of foreign concern, something that

    happens across international borders. But

global citizenship is close to home rather than

far away. In fact, it begins with how we relate

    to our neighbors.

As 4-H leaders, it is our privilege and

responsibility to partner with youth in creating

learning experiences that challenge them to be

change agents who think globally and act

locally. To consider the world as they engage

with people in their family, club and

    community.

    Does this get you excited?

Here are a few ways you can build global

citizenship skills into your upcoming 4-H

    learning experiences:

    Introduce new words and phrases.

Language is a tool to name the world and

describe reality. Encourage youth to expand

their vocabulary with words that reflect the

spirit of global citizenship such as empathy,

    mindfulness, perception, privilege, power,

    worldviews, culture, tolerance for ambiguity,

and more. You can create puzzles that help

youth learn new words or create laminated

posters that illustrate vocabulary and hang

them each time your club meets.

Build responsibility. Help youth cultivate a

sense of agency and personal responsibility

  • MINNESOTA 4-H CLOVER UPDATE MOWER COUNTY | APRIL 2019 507-437-9552 | www.4-H.umn.edu PAGE 17

by encouraging them to identify goals that

    are increasingly challenging over time.

Teaching youth to set goals effectively can

be life-changing. You could also pair youth

with mentors. Mentors not only help

expand the world of youth, but they can

also provide feedback that enables youth to

    gauge their own progress.

Look out for others. Social responsibility

grows from a commitment to the welfare of

others. Whether it's at the county fair, in a

club meeting, or during a leadership retreat,

cultivate a culture where youth are looking

out for each other. Start by inviting youth to

identify group agreements; a set of clear,

co-created guidelines to help everyone feel

comfortable in an atmosphere of safety,

respect, and trust. Once developed, your

group can regularly revisit the agreements

to see if they are still working and make

    changes if issues come up.

    Model thoughtful action. Pay close

attention to your actions and be ready to

admit your faults and mistakes, especially

those involving the youth you work with.

Show youth that you care, are ready to

accept your faults and work on them. The

results you wish to see in youth stem from

the effort you put into yourself. Practice

honesty, fairness, care for others, and care

    for yourself.

It’s your leadership that makes a difference

I am so grateful to the many youth and adult

leaders who give their time to help 4-H’ers

learn and lead. I look forward to hearing how

you integrate some of these global citizenship

skills into your upcoming 4-H learning

    experiences!

Register for the 2019 Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design Challenge!

The 2019 Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design

Challenge is here! This year’s theme, Help a

Superhero Save the Planet, is sure to be a fun

and challenging opportunity for youth to apply

    engineering design practices, develop their

    teamwork and communications skills, and

practice problem solving in a creative way.

The 4-H Engineering Design Challenge is based

on creating a Rube Goldberg™ based machine.

A Rube Goldberg machine is an overly complex

contraption that aims to complete a simple

task through a series of chain-reaction steps.

New for the 2019 Challenge, there are two task

options for teams to solve using their created

    machines:

Remove pollution from water and place that

pollution in an appropriate container, OR

    Identify an environmental issue or

challenge that currently threatens life on

the planet earth. As part of your

    Engineering Design Challenge machine,

create a two-step task that works to solve

    the issue or challenge.

The challenge offers youth a choice of a Level

1 or a Level 2 experience. Level 1 is designed

for youth in grades 3 - 8 and machine creation

    focuses on mechanical engineering (simple

machines). Get some ideas for Level 1 activities.

Level 2 has been designed for youth in grades

7 - 12 and focuses on four categories of

    engineering: mechanical, chemical, electrical

and fluid power. In 2019, we are piloting a new

    Engineering Design Challenge Level 2

    guidebook. The guidebook contains resources,

lessons and activities to assist Level 2

volunteer team coaches as they work with

youth on the challenge. We will be seeking

feedback from adult volunteers and 4-H youth

who use the guidebook. Watch for more

information on this in the spring of 2019.

Also in 2019, we will be hosting our second

Join 4-H'ers across the nation in doing service in April!

This April, join the Minnesota 4-H State

Ambassadors as we join 4-H members and

alumni across the nation in pledging our hands

to larger service! 4-H is launching the annual

True Leaders in Service initiative, a way for all

4-H members to say “thank you” to their

    communities, counties, tribal nations, and

states for all the support they have provided to

    4-H for over 100 years.

    The month-long community service challenge

kicks-off on April 1, and ends with the

National 4-H Day of Service on April 28. We are

encouraging youth and adults to venture out

into the community to lend a helping hand

through projects that meet community needs.

When completed with your project, tell us

about it online or via email at mn4h-

    [email protected]!

We will offer several prizes to groups and

individuals that participate! If your event is

open for others to join, register it on the

    National 4-H website!

    Celebrate service: Thank you, volunteers!

    University of Minnesota Extension and

Minnesota 4-H salute the over 11,000 adults

who volunteer to work with young people in a

    variety of learning experiences across

    Minnesota.

During National Volunteer Week, April 7-13, we

    especially recognize the hard-working

    volunteers through this year’s theme,

    “Celebrate Service.” Volunteers contribute to

the 4-H program in multiple ways: direct

    service to youth; advising program direction;

and sharing resources, including phone calls

and emails, miles traveled in personal vehicles

and personal dollars spent for program

supplies and donations. But the most

important resource volunteers give is time as

they support youth in developing their passion

and key life skills. Thank you to all Minnesota

4-H volunteers who tirelessly share your time,

talents and resources to grow true leaders. We

thank you for taking action and bettering your

communities with and on behalf of young

people and celebrate the important service you

    provide.
