parkinson’s disease has left Leah, 77, unable to drive yet burdened by regular medical appointments – too many for her children to manage on their own with young families and busy work schedules. reliable transportation provided through donations to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation allows Leah to maintain her independence and dignity. “these rides are a lifesaver,” says Leah.

together we provide nearly 3,000 rides to local seniors like Leah.

together, we care for our neighbors in need and safeguard the local and global Jewish community. During times of stress and transition, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation makes sure that Jews around the world have the help they need to cope, rebound and survive. In Israel, where one in four children lives below the poverty line, we are creating new opportunities for disadvantaged youth to break the cycle of poverty. We’re funding programs around the world that provide rescue and relief to children, families and the elderly who have nowhere else to turn.

Minneapolis is deeply committed to supporting and building connections to Israel and Jewish communities around the world. Whether as visitors or olim (immigrants to Israel), with our support, Jews from around the world experience Israel firsthand. We bridge the gap between Jewish life in Israel and the Diaspora by supporting innovative partnerships and programming. We’re also fueling a renaissance in once-thriving Jewish communities abroad. In russia and other Eastern European countries, where Jewish life was nearly silenced by decades of war and persecution, we’re nurturing an exciting resurgence of Jewish identity, rebuilding institutions and preparing the next generation of leaders.

together, we’re making sure Jewish life thrives– here in Minneapolis and across the globe.

Meet AshAGeRAshager is an IDF soldier who visited the twin Cities through parallel Lives, a unique partnership between the IDF’s elite paratroopers reconnaissance Brigade and the Israel Center of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation. Each year a delegation of soldiers lands in Minneapolis ready to strengthen the connection between Israeli and Diaspora Jews.

What touches Ashager and the other soldiers most profoundly is the deep commitment Minneapolis Jews feel toward Israel. they see it in schoolchildren who sing Hatikvah and give tzedekah, and in the eyes of thousands of people in our community celebrating Israeli Independence Day. then they carry it home, bringing to life their experiences for fellow soldiers who put their lives on the line every day protecting the Jewish homeland.

Hundreds of our community members made lasting connections with the IDF soldiers who visited the twin Cities through parallel Lives.

More than $150,000 in scholarships sent students to Israel for educational programs.

Nearly 100 teens and young adults experienced Israel firsthand.

TOGETHER WE HELPEd PROVidE:

TogeTher we engage The nexT generaTion in Jewish life

Every Monday and Wednesday, the ride from Jordan’s elementary school to his afternoon Jewish education program is filled with the sounds of Hebrew songs and laughter.

the program he attends doesn’t just teach Hebrew language skills or the meaning of Jewish holidays and how to observe them, it gives Jordan and his classmates a sense of community.

From the front seat, Jordan’s mom smiles. “I love that he not only gets the chance to learn about his religion, but he also gets to makes friends I hope he’ll keep for the rest of his life.”

Building Jewish identity starts at a young age, and we believe our traditions and values should be accessible to everyone. that’s why the Minneapolis Jewish Federation supports preschools, day schools, synagogue programs, summer camps and community centers that are essential to Jewish learning and promote inspiring Jewish experiences for toddlers, teens, and beyond.

Meet JoRdAn

the Harry Kay Leadership Institute is a joint initiative of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Federation of Greater St. paul and is supported by the Harry Kay Foundation.

the institute gives ambitious twin Cities young adults, nominated by local agencies, synagogues and community leaders, the tools necessary to develop leadership skills and learn to effectively address issues and challenges facing the Jewish people today.

the two year leadership institute culminates with a trip abroad to both continue the Judaic and communal learning, as well as to see firsthand the work being done overseas on behalf of our community.

Harry Kay was a successful entrepreneur whose true passion, community affairs and the Twin Cities Jewish Community, did not manifest until later in life. Near the end of his days, he took great pains to organize his estate deliberately in an effort to ensure his legacy would provide the kind of long-term impact he so desired.

Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the Harry Kay Foundation has provided over $25 million for a variety of initiatives in Minnesota and Israel. Of these, the Harry Kay Leadership Institute is the most well known.

– Judy Wilson, Lion of Judah donor

Lion of Judah is just one of the JFNA (Jewish Federations of North America)’s national donor recognition levels. through local and national programming, donor recognition and engagement programs provide outlets for donors to participate firsthand in the work we do.

this year, 194 women made a gift to the Minneapolis Community Campaign at or above the Lion level.

We believe in the power of community, and thankfully, so do you. As generous donors to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation you helped raise $10.6 million for this year’s Community Campaign. these funds help build, create, sustain and grow a vibrant, inclusive and supportive Jewish community here at home and across the globe.

part of our commitment to you, our donors, is careful scrutiny. the Minneapolis Jewish Federation works hard to ensure your gift is put to its highest and best use. our professional staff partners with lay leaders and dozens of volunteers in fulfilling the many roles required by our community – that of rescuer, strategist and steward to name a few. As donors, you have the opportunity to participate in the process – serving on committees that review, assess and target Jewish needs and our response to those needs.

Through your efforts we are able to confirm support for the programs and initiatives that do just that – help as many people as possible, wherever the help is needed most.

Dollars raised through the Community Campaign support programs that feed, clothe, shelter, counsel and rescue thousands of people around the world. together we do extraordinary things.

the work of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation doesn’t stop with the Community Campaign. this year we are distributing an additional $1.2 million in restricted and donor-directed gifts to help bridge funding gaps for critical programs and services and to respond to emergencies. In times of crisis, our partners and the broader community turn to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation as a reliable resource. together we deliver.

Here are just a couple of highlights from this year’s donor-directed giving opportunities:

women & children in crisis “I will be able to sleep tonight knowing that I’ll still have a home at the end of the month.” - Debra, Fund recipient

Continued high unemployment, significant foreclosure rates, and a shrinking government “safety net” prompted an anonymous donor to present a three-year $50,000 matching-gift-challenge to support women and children in crisis. the program provides funds to cover basic needs: rent/mortgage, utilities, childcare, groceries and medical bills. to date, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation has distributed more than $180K in emergency grants to 200 women through this fund.

inclusion at the sabes Jewish community center“I wanted to reconnect with the Jewish community after my accident.” –Grady Hughes, JCC Inclusion program participant

Inclusion at the Sabes JCC is often described by parents and participants as one of the most important contributions the organized Jewish community has ever supported. Every day, they see the impact it has on both youth and adults with special needs. the Sabes JCC’s Inclusion Department works both with individuals and families to ensure these opportunities and choices are available, and organization-wide by supporting colleagues in other departments to ensure continued integration into their programs.
