• Pray the Perpetual Novena in honor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal every Monday immediately following the 12:05 p.m. Mass.

• Eucharistic Adoration the first Saturday of each month 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. and the first Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m.

irst Reading: Isaiah 53:10-11 In this passage from Isaiah of the Exile, the

prophet comforts the Jewish refugees in Babylon by claiming that out of their suffering, symbolized by the plight of the “suffering servant,” justification will come. For us Christians, the prophet’s words provide insight into the mystery of Jesus’ passion. He, too, was a servant whose suffering brought justification.

econd Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16

In this weekend’s portion of the Letter to the Hebrews, the author uses the image of the high priesthood to reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ death. Because Jesus was tempted and suffered like all human beings, he understands the frailties of the human condition.

ospel: Mark 10:35-41 In this important passage form the Gospel of

Mark, Jesus corrects those who seek positions of prestige in the Christian community. Because Jesus gave his life in service, authentic Christian leadership is characterized by an attitude of service. Leadership that dominates is not authentically Christian.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of October 18

CAN YOU DO THIS?

"Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized . . . ?

"You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them,

and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you.

Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;

whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all."

(Mark 10: 35-45)

In today’s Gospel James and John, the sons of Zebedee ask Jesus if they can sit closest to him in the Kingdom of heaven – at his right and left sides. Jesus tells them that they don’t know what they are asking and inquires whether they can drink the cup he will drink. Are they able to withstand the suffering he will endure for the sake of the Kingdom of God? This is the same question that Jesus asks us every day. How will we answer? Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy.

"I can't do this." Many a woman-in-labor reaches a point in the delivery room when she doesn't think she can keep going. The pain

becomes more than she can bear. But those with her - the doctor, the nurse, the spouse holding her hand - assure her, "Yes, you can! You can do this! Hang on!" And, lo and behold, she brings a beautiful new creation into the world. She can do this. "I can't do this." He can't bring himself to go inside. He doesn't know what to say; he doesn't know what to do. He's terrified that

he'll say something clumsy or stupid, that he will make things worse. But his wise, older sister gently - but firmly - pushes him into their mother's bedroom. "Hi, Mom," he mumbles. Her eyes light up when she sees him. He sits by her bedside and holds her hand and they talk gently. By the end of the visit she is happy and peaceful. He promises to come tomorrow. And he will. And will come the next day and the day after that. He can do this. "I can't do this." The split was anything but amicable. She hasn't gotten over his betrayal; he's felt disconnected from her for years.

It's been a while since the divorce - but the hurt still stings, the feelings are still raw. Their son has asked them to come and meet the woman he loves and plans to marry. It will be the first time his parents will see each other since the settlement meeting in the attorney's office. They are both nervous and anxious about how they will react to seeing the other again. But when they see their son's happiness and meet this wonderful young woman who will be his wife - and their daughter-in-law - they somehow are able to put the past behind them and embrace the future. They can do this.

In today's Gospel, Jesus poses the challenge: Can you drink the cup I will drink? Can you immerse yourself in my

baptism? Our first inclination is to say, No, Lord, we can't. It's more than we can do. Jesus' question is a challenge; what Jesus asks us to take on is not easy: his life of humble service, his emptying himself of his own needs and wants for the sake of others. But there is also a promise here: that if we resolve to try to imitate Jesus' compassion, if we seek what is right and good and just, if we are motivated by generosity of heart, then the grace of God's wisdom

and strength will be ours, the Spirit of God's compassion and mercy will be upon us. We will find that we can: we can drink Jesus' cup of humble compassion and mercy, that we can live his baptism of selfless care and generosity, that we can bring good out of evil, that we can transform darkness into light. It won't always be pretty or go smoothly - but we can.

In Christ’s Peace, Father John

I WILL BE YOUR SERVANT

We are called to live as Jesus’ disciples. Each day we are asked to make choices to serve others, to put others’ needs before our own desires.

Adults: What motivates me to live as Jesus’ disciple? What part of discipleship causes me the most difficulty?

Children: What is one thing that I can do this week to help someone in need?

A Family Perspective: In the daily routine of family life, power struggles seem unavoidable. Whenever two or more people live together, there will be occasions of disagreement and attempts to exert influence over each other. Our Gospel can be an invitation to consider how authority is exercised in your household. There is a temptation to exercise our authority in ways that show our power over others. Especially when conflicts emerge, many of us rely upon the power we believe our role gives to us. Jesus teaches us that there is a more persuasive form of leadership. In these daily challenges we have the opportunity to practice and teach the kind of service and leadership Jesus modeled for us in his ministry and in his passion and death.

As you gather as a family, invite family members to participate in a role play in which family roles are reversed. For example, you might assign children the role of parents putting their children to bed with parents acting like the children. Or you may have them role play parents asking for cooperation from children to clean up the family room. When the role play is finished, ask if it was an accurate picture of how this situation usually plays out in your household. Does everyone cooperate when asked? What happens when someone doesn't cooperate? How are the conflicts that emerge resolved? Observe that conflicts based on power struggles in situations such as these seem unavoidable in family life. Talk about ways in which you might apply Jesus' words of the Gospel about authority in your family life.

MOMS AND TOTS GROUP

MEETS THURSDAYS

The Assumption Moms and Tots group meets Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. in the lower level of the Parish Center.

Moms and Tots provides an opportunity for moms (and dads too) with infants and toddlers to socialize, meet new friends, and discuss topics of interest (including child-rearing, leaving the work force, school concerns, etc.) While the adults socialize, the children are provided with toys and snacks, and learn to interact with one another. Although we are a very casual group, we support our members in times of need with meals and babysitting.

For further information, please contact Henriette Kahn at 973-539-1350.

CALLING ALL PARENTS: HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO RECHARGE!

Catholic Parents Recharge, Assumption's own monthly parents group, met for the first time on October 11. We had a lively discussion about our busy lifestyles and how we find time to nurture our children's and our own faith, while being pulled in so many directions.

Catholic Parents Recharge provide parents with a supportive, faith-filled environment to: • help you recharge from the pressures of the secular

world • strengthen your family dynamic, based upon our

Catholic faith and values • further your network of other Catholic families

Our next session for CPR will be on Sunday, November 15, from 10:15 - 11:30 a.m. If you have ideas for discussion topics and/or would like to join in, please email Kelly Harris at [email protected].

INTERESTED IN WOMEN'S HEALTH?

Do you want to learn more about how natural family planning and fertility awareness not only help couples to abide by church teaching but also diagnose and treat reproductive and fertility issues? There is a GREAT need in our diocese for individuals and couples to prayerfully consider becoming instructors in any of several methods of natural family planning. If you currently practice any method of NFP or are interested in learning more, please contact Kelley Pridgen at [email protected] or 704-305-2646.

SOCK IT TO ME

The winter is upon us and our friends who are homeless or in need would benefit from the warmth of dry socks to keep their feet healthy and protected.

Please lend a hand and provide covering for their feet.

We will collect socks during the month of October. Any size new socks will do. Please drop them in the food baskets in the church and they will be delivered to those in need.

DEAR PARISHIONERS,

My name is Katerina Kraeutler, and I am a 17 year old Assumption parishioner. I am very excited to share with you that I have been selected to go on an Operation Smile mission as a student volunteer. Operation Smile is a nonprofit organization that travels to third world countries to perform surgeries on children to correct cleft lips and cleft palates.

A large part of being a student volunteer for Operation Smile is to collect items that the children could play with before and after surgery to calm their nerves (for example bubbles, stickers, beach balls, coloring books, etc.), as well as collecting toothbrushes for the children so after Operation Smile leaves, they can still practice good hygiene. I am collecting these items in a donation box in the community room. Thank you all so much for your donations and support. Katerina Kraeutler
