The miner’s ‘black day’ has always been something of a jokey, informal term shared by FIFO workers who
have to return to the mine site. But an unprecedented 15,000 hits to
a Mining Family Matters website page suggests ‘black days’ are not only real, they’re also commonly experienced.
Earlier this year, we ran a story by MiningFM’s resident psychologist Angie Willcocks in our Safety Insert on the supposed black day:
There's a 'FIFO phrase' that seems to be popping up a lot lately and it's called 'black day'. After checking it out [among a few miners and their partners] it appears the term means different things to different people.
A ‘black day’ is usually used by the person flying (or driving) out for work, as opposed to those left behind. Not surprisingly, it's used to describe a FIFO or DIDO worker's toughest day. For some people, the hardest day is the final day of their time off (the day before they leave for work) and for others it's the actual day of travel back to the mine site.
The article included strategies for dealing with black days – and within days of being posted on the Mining FM website, was receiving hundreds of hits each day. After five months, the number stands at 14,970 – and it’s still climbing.
“It took us completely by surprise,” said MiningFM co-founder (and miner’s wife) Alicia Ranford. “We’ve always known about ‘black days’ but we didn’t appreciate just how strongly it was felt by those in the mining industry and their families.”
For a follow-up feature this month, contributor Brooke Martin interviewed nine miners and found all could identify with a specific down day in their FIFO/DIDO roster – a day when they felt increased stress, anxiety or sadness.
Bob, an electrician married with three children and working a FIFO roster, said he had feelings of extreme anxiety, being lost and unable to focus.
"I've worked in mining for nearly 15 years,” he said. “I've always had difficulty with this, it is something I’ve never been able to get used to."
Max, an emergency response coordinator,
said he didn’t label it a ‘black day’ but
recognised the symptoms and the timing.
"I have a huge knot in my stomach and
spend the last day of my break wondering
if I've done enough work around the house,
whether I caught up with friends and family
enough, and generally feel irritable and
depressed."
According to Ms Willcocks, recognising
that the issue is real is important for both
the industry and its workers.
“By identifying the problem, people can
work on simple strategies to alleviate it,”
Ms Willcocks said. “Plus, it’s the old adage
that a problem shared is a problem halved -
knowing that you’re not alone in feeling this
way can be a huge help.”
Further information on black days, dealing
with depression and helping a loved one to
cope with depression can be found in the
new Mining Family Matters book, Mining
Families Rock. For more information, see
page 14 and visit www.miningfm.com.au n

WE CHAT TO JOHNATHAN THURSTON
with a Big HeartCowboyThe
10 Issue 23 www.inflightmagazine.com.au
CHIT CHAT
He’s one of Queensland Rugby League’s greatest assets, and as Bettina Maniatis found,
Johnathan Thurston’s heart is as big as his game.
LAST TIME I SPOKE WITH YOU, YOU WERE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF SETTING UP A CHARITY, HOW’S ALL THAT COMING ALONG?Well, after speaking to a few people about the charity we decided not to go with it. Just the timing wasn’t so great. I come off contract at the end of next year so I’m certainly looking for a charity or something to put my face to that has the same beliefs and values that I do.
AND CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ORIGIN WIN… Thank you. It’s quite an achievement. We’ve been very successful for a number of years. You know, over the last couple
of years there’s been some hardships in Queensland with the cyclones and floods, so we love pulling that jersey on and representing the state.
YOU MENTIONED YOU’RE COMING OFF CONTRACT AT THE END OF NEXT YEAR, SO WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE BEFORE THEN?I certainly believe we’ve got a squad that can be a genuine contender for the title. It’s about getting the confidence up and if we can do that, we have a team that can definitely give it a shake. We’ve locked in some great players so the club’s moving in the right direction of achieving those goals.
MANY OF OUR READERS ARE IN NORTH QUEENSLAND. CAN YOU TELL US SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS AROUND THERE?On my down time I love going to
Magnetic Island for the day. Having lunch there and sometimes staying the night. I love playing golf at Paradise Palms – I play quite a bit of golf there. I also love getting to Port Douglas. It’s a lovely spot to relax and get away from the pressures of the game.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT QUEENSLAND?Queenslanders are very resilient. No doubt there have been a lot of families affected with the things that happened last year and they certainly help each other out in a time of need. We certainly stick by each other in hard times. That’s what sticks out to me the most.
AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS CURRENTLY GOING ON IN YOUR LIFE OFF THE FIELD?At this stage I’ve been an ambassador for the Red Cross. When Origin time comes around, we have a Queensland vs. NSW blood donating contest. I don’t know this year’s results yet, but in the past we’ve certainly beat them. If anyone is in a position to do so, definitely give blood. So many people need blood and there isn’t enough to get around. I’ve donated things to raise money and I know they’re low in A+ and O type so if there’s anyone out there with those blood types, you can certainly save someone’s life with it. n

Releasing Wreck & Ruin in September
KASEYCHAMBERS
In 2008, Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson became one of the only married couples in the history of the Australian album charts to have an
album collaboration debut at number one, coming second to none other than John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
Almost five years on, Kasey and Shane have recorded Wreck & Ruin, the highly anticipated follow up to their 2008 platinum #1 hit album, Rattlin’ Bones.
“Having been almost five years since we made Rattlin’ Bones we thought it was time to ‘tempt fate’ and challenge our marriage by making another album together,” the couple said. “We have both made solo albums in between, but in the back of our minds we always knew we would end up making music together again.”
According to Kasey and Shane, the writing process fell into place easier than they had planned so they grabbed a few of their musician friends and recorded everyone jamming the songs on a farm for a week.
“When the situation is right, it’s not difficult for us to make music together,” said Kasey who lives with Shane and their children on the Central Coast of NSW. “We click on that level.”
“Wreck & Ruin was born and gave us a chance to revisit the sounds of music that we love to make together where it can be traditional, but not conventional.”
Wreck & Ruin was recorded in eight days at Foggy Mountain, and the 13-track album captures each of the various elements of Kasey and Shane’s love for music – from roots to gospel, bluegrass to folk, but always country to the core.
The album opens with the hymn-inspired Til Death Do Us Part, before launching into the title track, a mixture of banjo and bruised fiddle work all purposefully built around country influences.
It’s as if the pair are stomping in a barnyard weighing up their differences, jamming in the name of revolution and taking a traditional genre and shaking it up for what it’s worth.
The album’s first single Adam & Eve is loaded with religious imagery. There are serpents and sin and storytelling that’s part fairytale and two shakes Biblical.
“There is no symbolic connection between us and Adam and Eve,” said Shane. “I don’t know if that story ended that well anyway!”
Other songs like The Quiet Life beg the question of wishing for a life away from the big city.
“That song is about our lives,” Kasey said. “A lot of people and couples can relate to that.”
“We’ve all thought ‘hey I just want to swap this life for a quiet life for a while’. It pops into your mind every now and again. I would get bored. Shane would love it though.”
“Absolutely,” Shane added. “We wrote that sitting on the back porch of the cabin and looking at the mountains and I was thinking I could easily do this instead of making this album and going on tour. I could easily sit here strumming and drink scotch all day.”
Up Or Down was inspired by a day of listening to the gospel sounds of The Louvin Brothers’ 1950 album Satan Is Real while Sick As A Dog literally gets its name from the entire family being swiped by the flu earlier this year, and ploughs through a fast, nasty bluegrass-stomp.
The new album is out Friday 7th September, and the new single, Adam and Eve, is out now. n

A new 176-page book offers professional advice and practical strategies for the growing number of mining workers coping
with fly-in/fly-out, drive-in/drive-out or life in isolated mining communities.
Mining Families Rock features professional advice by a psychologist, personal anecdotes from mining family members, and a raft of simple tips for keeping relationships healthy and kids happy.
The book is also aimed at Australians hoping to tap into the mining boom, with timely advice on where to start when you want a job in mining and what to expect from life on a mine site.
It’s published by the award-winning online support network Mining Family Matters, with 70 chapters including:
• Stayingconnectedwhenyouworkaway• Helpingchildren(fromtoddlerstoteens)cope• Usingtimewiselyonpreciousdaystogether• Rebootingyoursexlifeinaminingmarriage• Beatingthe'blackday'blues• Buildinganewlifeinaminingtown• Minesiteetiquetteandwhattopackfor your first shift
Mining Family Matters co-founder, Alicia Ranford says Mining Families Rock has been carefully compiled not only to help people through any challenges they face as a result of their work choices, but also to help people feel good about those choices.
“The mining boom offers great opportunities for families, but after six moves in a decade and eight years of fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) I know it can also put intense pressure on couples trying to maintain a strong relationship and raise happy, healthy kids,” Alicia says. “Great communication is the absolute key, and hopefully this book will start a lot of conversations on many personal levels.”
Mining Family Matters psychologist Angie Willcocks says there is a lot of attention in Australia on the
negative impacts of FIFO rosters on families, and it’s time to turn the focus onto how to make these
couples more resilient. “Working away from home is a fact of life for a growing number
of Australian families and it can be a positive experience so long as couples are very clear about goals and potential problems up front,” Angie said. “They need to tackle any issues as a united team and regularly reassess how

the whole family is coping.” Mining Families Rock is written by mining mum Alicia Ranford,
psychologist Angie Willcocks and journalist Lainie Anderson. It’s priced at $24.95 and is available from the Mining Family Matters website, www.miningfm.com.au.
The creation of a comprehensive self-help book follows the success of MiningFM’s 32-page Survival Guide for Mining Families. More than 50,000 copies have been sold to mining companies Australia-wide since March 2011.
Sample tips from Mining Families Rock COPING IN THE EARLY DAYS OF FIFO/DIDO: We all cope differently when things get tough. Some need more contact; others prefer to withdraw. If your partner seems distant and keen to get off the phone in the early days, try not to take it personally.
HOW TO COPE WHEN YOU’RE MISSING YOUR KIDS: Remember that your children will only worry and panic about dad being away for Christmas or a big birthday if the adults seem to be worried or panicky. Look at this as a great opportunity to model resilience and problem-solving skills.
BEATING THE BLACK DAY BLUES: Black days are a bit like Mondayitis, only on a bigger scale. For some miners, it’s the final day of their time off. For others it’s the actual day of travel back to the mine site. Next time you are having a black day, take the time to think about how you feel (sad, anxious or stressed) and how you are acting. Sometimes, even just noticing your black day thoughts can help.
MINING MUMS WHO WORK AWAY: Make sure guilt doesn’t affect your parenting style. If you do feel guilty about working away or long hours on the job, offload to supportive friends and/or family to get it off your chest, rather than changing how you interact with your kids.
DON’T LET MONEY MAKE YOU MISERABLE: Don’t alter your commitments (i.e. new house or bigger loan repayments) until you are sure that mining works for you. FIFO/DIDO families don’t do too well when they feel stuck with the lifestyle.
WORKING AWAY – HELPING CHILDREN TO COPE: Allow your children to talk about how they feel, and offer an extra cuddle when they’re sad. Avoid saying things like “be brave” or “don’t be silly” because they might start hiding feelings from you, thinking they are unacceptable feelings to talk about.
HELPING TEENAGERS TO COPE: some FIFO/DIDO parents feel a little guilty or sorry for their kids, and so expect less of them. Strangely enough, this can be bad for their self esteem. Encouraging and even expecting your teenager to take part in family activities and help around the house is not only good for their confidence; it’s great for setting up opportunities for communication.
SEX AND THE MINING COUPLE: If you have differing libidos, don’t fall into the trap of thinking the ‘problem’ rests with the person who wants less or more sex. Setting the issue up as one person’s problem just makes it harder to tackle and increases the tension, frustration, guilt and blame. Try approaching your differing sex drives as a team, working together to break your ‘sex cycles’.
MARRIAGE BREAKDOWNS AND INFIDELITY: If you have a strong relationship based on mutual respect, interests and love for each other (and you can openly discuss any worries or issues as they arise) there is no reason the FIFO/DIDO lifestyle should negatively impact your marriage or partnership.
MINE CAMP ETIQUETTE: Get yourself clean and tidy before breakfast and dinner in the mess hall. No-one wants to sit beside someone with half the day’s work still on their overalls. n
HandlingCriticism
BY KELLY MANIATIS, REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST AND MEMBER OF THE AUSTRALIAN PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY
Last issue, I highlighted five constructive responses to reasonable criticism. Here are another four, and some closing key points on the topic.
Find the Facts:If the person offering criticism isn’t being specific enough, then ask questions. It’s important to find out what the real issue is. If your boss says, “I didn’t like your last report”, then get details. What didn’t they like about it?
Admit MistakesPeople who own up to their mistakes are respected and admired. When you freely take responsibility for something that hasn’t worked out as you would have wished, you’re demonstrating professionalism and maturity. If you’re in the wrong, admit it and apologise. Agreeing with your critic puts you both on common ground and can often foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and open communication.
Learn from the ExperienceFair criticism can help us improve our performance, if we take the time to learn from it. So, spend some time thinking about what happened and what your critic said. Come up with a plan for how you’re going to fix the situation and avoid the same mistake next time.
Be ThankfulAfter you’ve gained perspective on the experience, thank the person for taking the time to give you feedback. Many people feel uncomfortable giving criticism, just as many people are uncomfortable receiving it. Explain how it has helped you, and what you’ve learned from the experience.
KEY POINTSThere’s a big difference in fair and unfair criticism, but sometimes the line between the two is hard to see. Fair criticism can help you grow and learn, while unfair criticism can drag you down.
When it comes to handling fair criticism, realise that this is an opportunity. Keep an open mind and where possible, be willing to own up to any mistakes you’ve made. Realise that the critic is addressing an action or situation, not you personally. Make an effort to listen actively and understand what they’re saying, then plan how you’ll improve things and move on. n

WHILE MANY ENJOY GETTING OUT ONTO THE GREEN FOR THE GAME, IT HAS ITS HEALTH BENEFITS TOO!
FIGHTING FIT
Keep Fit GolfingAs if golf lovers needed another
excuse to get out onto the green, there are a number of healthy
advantages gained from the popular game.
With a recent study revealing that many Australians have a Vitamin D deficiency, this statistic is even higher amongst the mining and resource industry.
Essential for strong bones, Vitamin D also regulates the amount of calcium in the blood and helps regulate the growth of skin cells. And where do we get our healthy dose of Vitamin D? From being out in the sun and the fresh air! That’s the first tick for golf!
Secondly, and pretty obviously, exercise is a huge health benefit of the game. It’s not only the walking involved that builds your fitness, but the swing itself improves a person’s core strength. Additionally, a round of golf is said to burn roughly 300 calories!
Another health plus comes from the endorphins released during a game – so long as you don’t let a bad slice get you down of course! These happy hormones
are a powerful natural mood enhancer.
What’s more, with the invention of
a new golfing gadget, staying healthy
through golf has become even easier!
On 1st August, GolfBuddy - the
leading developer of golf distance
measuring device (DMD) solutions and
new generation golf GPS rangefinders
- announced the launch of its newest
model, the GolfBuddy Voice, a talking
golf GPS.
"For hundreds of years golfers have
relied on the human voice of caddies
to dispense vital distance information
on the course,” said Jamie Stark, GolfBuddy Australia General Manager. “GolfBuddy has taken that time-honoured tradition and re-invented it for the technological age.”
A major breakthrough in the golf GPS market, Voice is the first of its kind featuring audio capabilities offering golfers the ultimate golfing experience. It is the smallest and lightest golf GPS on the market and the easy to use unit not only provides accurate distances to front, centre and back of the green of more than 35,000 golf courses worldwide, including around 1,000 Australian courses, it actually tells you.
Distances are shown numerically on a small screen, alongside the hole number and par. Furthermore, GolfBuddy’s Auto Course & Hole Recognition technology and 24-channel GPS receiver, means the Voice offers superior precision because it always knows where it is automatically locating your position on the course and hole you are playing.
The GolfBuddy Voice is available www.gpsgolfbuddy.com.au for RRP $220. n

A t times, everyone’s life will be out of balance. In order to realise our goals, some sacrifice is necessary. As Stephen Covey put it: “It’s easy to say NO, when there is a deeper
YES burning inside,” however sometimes that deeper YES can be business tasks, meetings and reports and these can often be at the expense of family, friends or you own health.
You need to identify times when your body is requiring you to be “switched on”, and respect the down times so your body can recuperate. Too much adrenaline can lead to stress and anxiety!
Give yourself an honest and realistic evaluation of the tasks that are possible between now and the next week and prioritise your time so that you can settle into a well-earned break and actually enjoy it.
Consider this advice to squash the stress:1) Make sure that you continue to exercise. When you do not exercise, you do not expend as many calories, and you will not sleep as well at night.2) Never skip meals. When you do not eat, it sends a message to your body to shut down your metabolism, this in turn make you feel very sluggish3) Place yourself as a priority over your break and consider gaining some real down-time. If you verbally let your loved ones know that you need a good rest, they will understand much more.
When you relax and recharge your body and mind, you will come back much stronger and more productive. n

Weight Loss &Weight Control
BY GUDRUN OLIVER FROM PEAK PHYSIQUE PERSONAL TRAINING
WHAT YOU MUST KNOW TO LOSE WEIGHT:
1. Diets don’t work. If you have ever been on a diet, you know that dieting does not work. Eventually, dieting and denial lead to overeating and more often than not, binge eating.
2. Calories do count. If you eat more calories than what you burn off through exercise and daily activities, you will gain weight. On the other hand, eating fewer calories than what your body requires will result in weight loss. Reducing the fat in your diet will help reduce total caloric intake, but only if you consume appropriate portion sizes and reduce your caloric intake. Just because you’re eating fat-free cookies doesn’t mean that you’re entitled to the whole box. Calories add up whether they’re calories from protein, carbohydrates, or fat.
I have 10 tips for successful weight reduction; this issue I’ll run through the first 5 and next issue, the remaining.
1. Write down what and when you eat or drink in a day and why. Keeping accurate food records of every bite you take can help identify why you are eating (happy, sad, hungry, bored). Plus, it is amazing to find out how the little snacks add up during the day.
2. Become aware of meal timing. You may eat lightly during the day, but devour dinner and snacks throughout the evening. Experiment by eating a considerable breakfast and lunch and eating lightly for dinner. Usually, people are most active during the day, so it only makes sense to consume the bulk of our calories during this time. Some people aren’t hungry for breakfast because they consume too many calories in the evening.
3. Learn your calorie budget. Know how much you can eat to lose weight and still maintain your energy. To estimate your daily calorie requirement:
1) Multiply your desired or goal weight (in pounds) by 10 to find your resting metabolic rate (RMR). This is the number of calories you burn at rest. Example: Your goal weight is 170#: 170 X 10 = 1700 calories
2) Multiply RMR by your daily activity level. Sedentary 20-30% Moderately active 40-60% Very active 70-80% Example: you are moderately active. 1700 X .4 = 680 calories burned through physical activity.
3) Add Steps 1 and 2 to determine daily calorie requirements. 1700 + 680 = 2380 calories per day to maintain weight.
4) To lose weight, subtract 500.
2384 - 500 = 1884 calories per day to lose about 1 pound a week.
4. Divide your calorie budget into at least 3 parts of the day. If you are eating 1800 calories a day to lose weight, divide your calories into three parts of the day: Breakfast/snack 600 caloriesLunch/snack 600 calories Dinner/snack 600 calories You may even want to eat 4 to 6 mini-meals throughout the day.
5. Read food labels. Be aware of how many calories are in a serving and, more importantly, how many servings are in a container!
Next issue, I’ll go through the final 5 tips for successful weight reduction. n

BOY’S TOYS
Haines Hunter’s 560 Offshore has been developed over a two year intensive research and development
program; and again they’ve yielded another exceptional result.
As you would expect from any Haines Hunter, the boat speaks volume for its size with an overall length of 5.9m and 2.4m beam. The boat has Haines Hunter’s unique “SSM System” utilising a fully glassed stringer system, foam filled hull and 7 year warranty, the Haines Hunter 560 Offshore is also built to meet Australian standard 1799.
“This ‘melting pot’ of ideas and experience has produced a statement in the boating industry,” according to John Willis of Trailerboat Magazine.
This makes it one of the safest and most innovative boats in its class.
At a glance from the outside, the boat has the highest quality finish with its high gloss superior UV resistant gel coat, 32mm stainless steel bow rails as standard and a very cleverly engineered heavy duty bow sprit with a stainless steel easy guide rope housing. The transom is well thought out with beautiful clean lines and plenty of space so mounting accessories like burley buckets, boarding platforms, transducers or tuna tubes is a simple task.
Step inside the cockpit and it has the feel of a much larger boat, with seating arrangements for up to six people.
“There is always a feel to a Haines Hunter
boat,” Willis of Trailerboat Magazine goes on. “They just give you a sense of strength and security from the second you come on aboard, and the 560 Offshore is no exception.”
The fully insulated underfloor storage compartment is enormous! This can double as an ice box for your day’s catch or be utilised for placing tackle boxes or fishing

equipment. The Haines Hunter 560 Offshore comes standard with two huge rear quarter storage tanks with drains; either can be plumbed as a live well or used as an esky to keep your drinks cool. The new side panel mouldings and rear mouldings have now made this boat the best 5.6m to 6.0m boat on the market today.
Step up to the helm and you can see the 560 Offshore has been designed to take some of today’s largest electronics displays to assist the serious off-shore angler, whether you are a southern angler chasing those mighty Southern Blue Fin Tuna or a northern angler endeavouring to hook that Marlin of a lifetime. Standing at the helm station, you have perfect panoramic vision and control over the vessel. The cabin is uncluttered with ample side pocket and under bunk storage.
The Performance Deadrise Vee (PDV) is Haines Hunter’s trade mark hull design, and once you ride in this boat you will automatically feel the difference compared to other boats of the same size. Haines Hunter has had a reputation for superb finishes, the highest quality fittings and the best performing boats for over 50 years and the 560 Offshore is no exception. The boat has a solid feel and an exceptionally soft ride which is to be expected from a Haines Hunter, the extra wide beam makes it very stable at rest. The boat is rated to 150hp and has a standard 200lt long range fuel tank to get you home on those long trips out to sea.
Haines Hunter 560 Offshore is another legend of the sea that can be towed comfortably by a large family sedan or mid-sized four wheel drive.

Industry standards are, well, standard with this 4WD Able Bus & Coach
This Able Bus & Coach 4WD 18-seat remote area bus ticks all the boxes for a minesite.
It isn’t over-engineered.
Its simple built-for-purpose design means it gets the job done without overselling itself.
For safety compliance, the vehicle meets strength and design requirements.
All the engineering tests are validated.
Extensive safety features come standard.
These include a built-in Rollover Protection System (ROPS) to Australian Standards 1636.1
and 2294.2 and Australian Design Rule rollover compliance, full size coach seats with seat belts and driver’s air bag.
Air conditioners designed and built for extreme heat and vibration also come standard.
Testament to the company’s business philosophy of building tough yet safe, reliable and comfortable vehicles that meet the highest standards are customers such as BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and NationWide Hire and a repeat business rate of 90 per cent.
A key proposition of the vehicle is robustness.
It’s built on a bigger truck and put less passengers in. It may cost a little more but it’s better in the long run, giving a stronger, more reliable vehicle.
Another key feature of the vehicles is inter-changeability with passenger modules that can be removed from older cab chassis and placed on a new cab chassis reducing replacement costs for companies.
Able Bus & Coach’s vehicle make of choice is Isuzu – and for good reason:
Isuzu isn’t just a good make of vehicle; after sales service is unsurpassed.
The tilt cab of the chassis also allows easy maintenance and access to the motor.
A higher ground clearance than a conventional bus chassis is also ideal for mine site and remote areas.

Australia’s leading luxury performance car manufacturer, HSV, recently
announced the re-introduction of its popular ClubSport and Maloo entry level models.
Launched in time to celebrate its 25th anniversary, these new models represent all that HSV is known for – performance, design, and technology – in a competitively priced packaged.
HSV ClubSportRecently, the ClubSport nameplate has only been available in “R8” guise but as part of its range realignment, HSV has re-introduced the entry-level ClubSport.
A quick review of its standard features reveals the new ClubSport to be anything but a “base” model. Powered by HSV’s 6.2 litre, LS3, Generation 4 V8 which delivers a massive 317kW of power and 550 Nm of torque, the ClubSport effectively includes all the major features of the outgoing MY12 ClubSport R8 model with the exception of HSV’s Enhanced Driver Interface (EDI), which will be available as a factory-fitted option.
The new ClubSport also picks up HSV’s 20” Pentagon alloy wheels to
complement an impressive list of standard features which includes sport touring suspension, electronic stability control with competition mode, 4-piston brake package, satellite navigation and rear park assist with reversing camera.
The new ClubSport will be launched at a maximum recommended "drive-away” price of just $65K for the manual version, which represents approximately $7,500 of added value when compared with the outgoing MY12 HSV ClubSport R8.
HSV MalooAdopting a similar strategy to the ClubSport, HSV is also re-introducing
the Maloo to the HSV range. Also powered by HSV’s 6.2 litre,
LS3, Generation 4 V8 delivering 317kW of power and 550 Nm of torque, the new Maloo includes all the major features of the outgoing MY12 Maloo R8 model with the exception of EDI, and the remote locking hard tonneau and performance sailplane.
In place of the hard tonneau will be a versatile, soft tonneau cover, offering a level of storage flexibility that is sure to be well received by the trade community. For those preferring the hard tonneau and performance sailplane, these can be optioned for $3,990.
As with the ClubSport, the new Maloo picks up the larger, 20” Pentagon alloy wheels to complement its standard sport touring suspension, 4-piston brake package, performance seats in cloth trim with 4-way electric adjustment on the driver’s seat, satellite navigation and rear park assist with reversing camera.
The Maloo will be launched at a maximum recommended "drive-away” price of just $58,990 for the manual version, which represents outstanding value. n

ESCAPEBY BETTINA MANIATIS
From the moment you walk into this welcoming atmosphere, you’ll feel the heat rush over you as the ambience
of Byblos in Brisbane’s Hamilton has to be experienced to be understood.
The hues of reds, dark browns and oranges, along with the glow of pink from the huge bar shelf makes it impossible not to feel like your being warmed from the inside out.
But it’s not only the interior design that will heat your soul as the cocktails tantalise your tastebuds and menu gets your mouth watering.
First, I tried a couple of the exquisite cocktails. A special mention goes to the Middle East Margarita (Herradura Tequila, pineapple juice, lemon juice and apricot liquor) which was a little stronger than the traditional kind I’m used to – but no complaints here! Equally as delicious was the Lychee and Basil Martini (Zen Green Tea liqueur and Malibu mixed with Massenez lychee liqueur and a splash of Opal Nera white sambucca - shaken hard with fresh lime, basil, and apple juice).
OK, time for some grub! The menu made it difficult to choose, seeing as each item
sounded more delicious than the last but the Escargot (snails) was the clear winner for me, sautéed in butter with fresh coriander, garlic, lemon juice and chilli. The portion size was a pleasant surprise as I’m used to this being served in the shell and only getting around six to eight of them per portion – similar to oysters - but this dish had at least 15 if not more!
The lightly grilled haloumi served with lemon came in a close second favourite,
winning me over with its simplicity and the Rekakat (delicate filo pastries filled with feta and mozzarella cheese, chopped onion, and fresh herbs) is also definitely worth a mention.
Finish off your evening sampling a few more cocktails as the bar is open till late and a great spot to have a drink whilst chattering away. You’re sure to leave with the same warmth in your belly as when you set foot in the door. Enjoy! n

Clean the kitchen before renovating
Giving the kitchen a quick clean makeover
can be as simple as repairing cracks,
scratches and dents with timber filler in a
matching colour, then sanding it down until
it’s smooth. Use sugar soap to clean oil
build-up, particularly on cabinets above the
range hood and fridge.
Apply gloss, varnish and grout to achieve a ‘clean’ lookFor timber cabinets and fittings, a quick coat
of varnish will have the area looking new in
no time. Replacing tiled or glassed splash
backs is another popular step in renovating a
tired space for maximum effect.
Installing new products and appliancesNew kitchen cabinets can be the most
expensive part of a renovation. A tip to halve
the cost is to replace only cabinet doors.
Alternatively, you can update kitchen cupboards
by painting them with laminate paint and
replacing old door handles. Quirky handles
will give your kitchen a distinctive look. When
choosing your bench top, take into account
the way you use the kitchen. Will the bench top
need to take heat? How much maintenance will
it need? How easy is it to clean? Can you use it
as a cutting surface? Will it stain easily?

I f you are looking to save money on larger purchases (or on small purchases for that matter) the power of pre shopping and shopping around online can really help you find those money saving bargains.
The internet has many sites that can help you find the cheap goods and bargains you are after, all from the comfort of your home computer.
This is not to say you have to buy the goods online, instead you can shop around online and find the best prices and bargains from retailers you can physically visit in your local CBD, effectively avoiding making a transaction online while still getting the best price you can find in your local area.

Cheap Goods and BargainsIn order to save money on your purchases, you need to know where to begin to find the best deals on the product you are after.
It has become the standard for major retailers to release their sales and cheap goods that are about to be on sale via online catalogues, which then get submitted to major online catalogue sites that allow you to flip through the pages and select items easily that you wish to buy in person.
Recently I used a website where you can create a pre-shop list to win $10,000 and learn how researching your purchases before hand can save you a lot of money.
I was able to find the camera I wanted at six different camera stores in the city followed by ascertaining which was the cheapest – that way when I got to the city, instead of walking to six different shops and searching, I was able to walk directly to the shop and pick up my new camera at the best possible price.
Other Pre-Shop things to considerPrice is not the only thing you need to consider when researching or pre shopping for an item. ‘TISTHESEASONHALLOWEEN
Bring out the scary costumes and pack the pantry full of sweets, it’s that time of year again – Halloween!
And in honour of the creepy occasion, we’ve
compiled a list of our favourite horror movies
to send plenty of chills up your spine!
Paranormal Activity (2007)After moving into a new home, a couple
become disturbed by a presence in the house
and decide to set up a camera to capture
events while they sleep.
EDITOR’S COMMENT
If you’re feeling brave enough, you can also watch
Paranormal Activity 2 and 3. I have to admit, I’m too
chicken to actually bring myself to watch this but a
friend watched it and described a scene in detail to
me – no word of a lie, I didn’t sleep for two nights.
Silence of the Lambs (1991)The story of an FBI cadet who needs get inside the mind of an incarcerated and manipulative killer to determine another’s next moves and catch them.
EDITOR’S COMMENT
A classic, and some scenes have gone down in
history. Who could forget Anthony Hopkins’ chilling
hiss when he describes eating his victim’s liver.
Interesting fact: that hiss was actually unscripted
and the disturbed look on Jodie Foster’s face is a
genuine reaction to it!
The Shining (1980)When a family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter, they encounter an evil presence which overtakes the father.
EDITOR’S COMMENT
Over 30 years on and this movie still remains one
of the scariest around. You’ll never walk down the
corridor of a hotel alone again without remembering
a particularly creepy scene. For something a little
more light-hearted, The Simpsons’ did a comedic
version!
Wolf Creek (2005)Three backpackers become stranded in remote Australia and fall prey to a murderer who takes them captive after seeming like an innocent bushman offering to help them with their car.
EDITOR’S COMMENTMade scarier by the fact it was marketing as ‘based on true events’ one of the influences of the movie is said to be the case of missing backpacker Peter Falconio and his girlfriend, Joanne Lees who survived the attack. Falconio was never found and Bradley John Murdoch was convicted of his death in 2005.
TOP HALLOWEEN ACTIVITYDraculas, Gold CoastFor a fun - and extremely cheeky - night out, heads to Draculas on the Gold Coast where you’ll be guaranteed plenty of laughs and screams!
‘Transfusion’ is a tantalizing mix of burlesque, puppetry, comedy and even a hint of circus performing – you’re sure to enjoy the evening, especially with the delicious (and huge) cocktails on offer.
The show isn’t really suitable for kids, but not to worry as Draculas have you covered with a Drax 4 Kids option too.
And just a tip, book as early as you can if you want to get in for Halloween – it’s bound to be on the top of many people’s lists at this time of year!

The real difference with this range is the materials used in the blank along with the new resin system and cloth. It allows production of a blank that will dead lift 40kg+ of weight with weights of less than 110grams. That’s not all though, as there is no use having the weight lifting ability without an action that will allow the angler to fully use this raw lifting power.
The power transfer is the real secret behind these rods (see image). Combine this with stunning looks, Echrome Fuji guides and all the ‘blingy’ butts that anglers are after these days.
Available in Deep Jig Spin and Overhead, Poppers and soon to be released Baitcasters, the Venom range has people talking!

Bamboo fabric is arguably the most sustainable choice for clothing and homewares and the list of its environmental and fashion benefits is extensive and impressive.
The fastest growing plant on the planet (and one third faster than the fastest growing tree), bamboo can grow to upwards of one metre per day. Botanically a grass and not a tree, it sends up new shoots after harvesting, eliminating the need for replanting.
Bamboo is perfect for regenerating degraded areas – it is the fastest growing canopy and generates more oxygen than equivalent stand of trees. n

TRAVEL BUG BITES
Travellers are “breaking up their holiday breaks” by staying over at the world’s holiday hotspots on the way to or from
their primary destinations. Flight Centre Limited global executive
general manager of marketing Colin Bowman said growth in the number of airlines servicing Australia, coupled with the emergence of low cost and hybrid carriers, had opened up a variety of new holiday options for travellers.
“As the range of airfare choices takes off, travellers are finding that the conventional flight path from A to B is not always the best or most interesting travel option,” he said. “In
some cases, flying direct to the destination may not be the cheapest flight either.”
To highlight some of the interesting alternatives that are now available, Flight Centre’s airfare experts have compiled a range of interesting “stay over” itineraries.
1) New York, via HawaiiFor most Australians, the journey to the Big Apple typically includes a flight via Los Angeles, but an exciting new option was made available in June, when Hawaiian Airlines introduced direct services from Honolulu to New York’s Kennedy (JFK) airport.
2) New Zealand, with a South American flavour Competition is intense
on the Trans Tasman routes, which are
now serviced by Qantas, Air New Zealand,
Virgin Australia and a host of highly rated
international airlines including Emirates,
Aerolineas Argentina and Lan Chile. In addition
to flying to NZ, travellers taking off to Santiago
with Lan can also stopover in Papeete and
Easter Island.

4) Paris, via ReunionSimilarly, if you’re travelling to Paris and in need of some beach time, consider Air Tahiti Nui or Air Austral. Air Tahiti offers flights from Sydney to Papeete and on to the French capital, while Air Austral flies via Reunion Island, the gateway to Mauritius and the Seychelles.
5) Rome, via DubaiWhile many travellers still fly to Europe via Asia, Emirates’ and Etihad’s rapid growth in recent years has really put the Middle East on the stay over map for Australians.
Passengers taking off from Melbourne on Emirates can stay over in Dubai on the way to or from Rome and other European and UK destinations.
6) LA, via FijiThe quickest way to get to Los Angeles is, of course, the direct route to Los Angeles International Airport. But there’s also a host of indirect options for travellers to consider. Fijian carrier Air Pacific, which flies from several Australian cities, offers connections from Nadi to Los Angeles and other North American destinations, including Vancouver.
7) Bali and Phuket combinedThese two holiday havens have long been favourites for Australian travellers.
But there’s no need to choose between them, as it’s now easy and affordable to visit both. Flight Centre has created an airfare deal that includes a flight from Australia to Bali, via Singapore, on to Phuket and then home to Australia via Singapore.
8) Kenya, via KoreaAustralian travellers taking off on an African safari now have a new flight option.
Korean Air, which offers flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, recently launched non-stop services from Seoul Incheon to Nairobi. Flights will leave Seoul on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
9) Las Vegas, via HawaiiTravellers taking off to Las Vegas can really hit the jackpot when it comes to stopover options along the way. In addition to taking the traditional route to LA with V Australia, Qantas and others, Aussie travellers can choose to get beached in Hawaii by flying Hawaiian Airlines and stopping over in Honolulu.
10) South Africa, via Adu DhabiIf you’re planning a trip to South Africa, there are literally dozens of flight paths to consider, in addition to the direct route from Australia. Examples include flights with Etihad, via Abu Dhabi, and Air Mauritius, via Mauritius. n
3) London, via the MaldivesThere are literally dozens of ways to fly to London. If you’re not in a hurry to touch down in the UK, Emirates offers one of the most interesting alternatives, which includes stops in Singapore, Colombo (Sri Lanka), Male and Dubai.

Discover Bluewater for yourself.
On the Northern Beaches of Cairns, Bluewater not only offers your family an idyllic Australian costal lifestyle that’s close to great schools, shops and restaurants – you get to come home to the ultimate playground with pristine beaches and the Great Barrier Reef on your doorstep. Bluewater is an investment in your family’s future and your lifestyle away from work.

Bluewater’s master planned residential development at Trinity Beach in far north Queensland embodies this belief offering
the ultimate lifestyle and investment security.Situated a short 15 minute drive north of
Cairns Airport, Bluewater is nature’s playground - spanning 155 hectares between two World Heritage listed attractions – Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. And while all this might seem miles away from the everyday, Bluewater is just minutes from Smithfield shopping centre, a choice of schools, James Cook University, the Cairns International Airport and the vibrant hub of the city.
Bluewater comprises a selection of housing allotments positioned in rainforest, park and waterfront precincts. Buyers should note that just five waterfront allotments remain, positioned overlooking the development’s impressive 108 berth marina. These ‘lifestyle’ blocks are rare and represent the region’s last waterfront land development. And now is the time to snap up this never to be repeated opportunity as Bluewater recently released a new offer for anyone purchasing these remaining few by pledging to make up to a weighty $39,000 in interest rate payments which means you could get your position on the waterfront from as little as $360,000.
Bluewater Marina was opened in 2007 and
since then has set the benchmark in marina
management throughout Australia. As Cairns’
only cyclone-rated, fully secured and managed,
freehold marina, it is not surprising to report high
demand and satisfaction with periods of 100 per
cent occupancy. These results underscore the
investment value of owning a marina berth which
is further enhanced by the current shortage
Australia wide.
Bluewater Marina is currently offering a
$30,000 saving on the purchase of its marina
berths as well as payment of levies for the first
three years. So whether you own your own boat
or rent out to gain rental income, this represents
an attractive and affordable investment.
Now is the time for visit Bluewater. Just
last month it celebrated the opening of the
Elysian Display Village with builder, David
McCoy Homes’ featuring four homes situated
alongside in the forested reserve. These homes
provide an inspiring insight into the effective
use of space, contemporary furnishings and
fittings and the latest in tropical design and
construction. The display village is open daily by
appointment and on weekends.
In short, Bluewater is the best of many worlds
– a beach side lifestyle with the convenience of
close proximity to shops and school in a safe
residential community offering state-of-the-art
infrastructure and extensive public amenities.

BY ALICIA RANFORD, MINING FAMILY MATTERS CO-FOUNDER (WWW.MININGFM.COM.AU)
TAKING THE KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL FOR HOLIDAYSA huge benefit of the FIFO/DIDO lifestyle
is the ability for families in mining and resources to stretch their annual leave.
For those who don't do FIFO/DIDO, let me explain. Let’s say your husband works nine days on the mine site and then has five days off at home. He takes nine days annual leave and ends up with 19 days off (five days rostered R&R + nine days annual leave + five days rostered R&R = 19 days). I've never met a FIFO/DIDO family who’s complained about this!
So this fantastic arrangement, coupled with the fact that FIFO workers get to keep their frequent flyer points, makes for a great excuse to take a holiday.
We weighed up the pros and cons of taking the kids out of school and decided that time together as a family (coupled with the life experiences they would receive while on holiday) far outweighed the time missed at school.
So with that in mind, here are my tips for making the most of valuable annual leave:• Writealettertotheprincipalwellaheadof time, explaining the reason for your child’s absence from school. Forward a copy to their class teachers too, requesting any work they might miss while away. Then, of course, ensure this gets done before you return. • Chooseadestinationwithadifferentculture- an eye-opening experience will widen your
children’s horizons. • Getthekidstowriteajournalofwhatthey've been doing each day. Include rubbings of coins from whichever country you’re in, airline tickets and attraction ticket stubs of the places you’ve been. • Travelwithanotherfamily.True, thisisrisky, but choose friends who have travelled before and have like-minded interests. • Ifyouarestayingintheoneplace, hireavilla. It’s cheaper than you think, especially when sharing with another family. • Organisedaytrips. You’llbepickedupfromyour villa/resort and taken for a day of activities. Your guide will be an amazing source of local knowledge and will teach you some phrases to help you on your way. • Iftravellingoverseasisn’tsomethingyou’vedone before, contact a travel agent who will help guide you with your plans. They often have the cheapest deals too. We have had great success with both www.byokids.com.au and www.flightcentre.com.au.
Whether you’re a FIFO/DIDO or residential family, life is busy and we all work hard - so it’s extra important to make precious time for family. I know it’s a cliché, but the kids grow up so fast.

A 1985 painting by Sharon Davson recently sold for $5.2 million (US $5.4m) - a new record for a painting by
a living Australian artist. The painting, Points of View, is a major early
career work by the artist. Sharon Davson has a solid three decade professional Australian and international art career to her credit.
Points of View was originally commissioned by Norman Hepburn for his then Central Coast resort in 1985 as three continuous canvases created by Davson. It has changed hands several times over the decades.
It’s most recent sale also places the painting third in the world by value for a painting by a living female artist.
This is causing some excitement as the sale seems to have taken some members of the art world by surprise with a few offering their opinions. However, amidst the opinions, there are the obvious statements in the media that ''the purchaser was obviously happy'' to confirm the $5.2m sale.
Since the early 1980s, Sharon Davson has represented herself through her professional art gallery and studio complexes; which are predominantly open by appointment. Thus, with assistance from her staff and agents, she has remained outside of much of the standard commercial art gallery limelight.
The owners of her art and those who have participated with her work read like a Who's Who of the celebrity and corporate worlds, yet she has maintained a rather private life.
Boyd Nelson of Whitehead Gupta Lawyers, issued the following statement on behalf of the new owner Macquarie Trustee NZ:
"Points of View is an iconic Davson work lavishly themed with her signature jig-saw puzzle pieces, and includes subtle personal motifs woven into the expansive canvas. It is an opportune investment in this leading female artist's work.
This 1.37 x 5.5 metre (4.5 by 18 foot) painting was Davson's second major art commission.
We regard it as a significant work in Davson's career, as well as an important work in the history of Australian art.
Given the comparatively small out-put by this remarkable internationally accredited artist, and with much of Davson's art sold before being created, it is very rare to have the opportunity to acquire such a major early painting. Macquarie Trustee NZ regards the purchase price for ‘Points of View' as an excellent buy."

Internationally, this $5.2 million (US$5.4m) sale places Davson third in the world ranking by value for a PAINTING by a living female artist. (Marlene Dumas currently holds this record with a sale value of US$6.3 million for her painting The Visitor; a US$5.8 million work by Yayoi Kusama from Tokyo is second. Cady Noland takes the overall value record for art by a living female artist for a US$6.6 million sculpture.)
Achieving the highest sales price for a living artist within a country is predominantly a male domain. Davson is currently the only female holding this title.
"I am delighted about the sale of 'Points of View',” said Davson. “It's testimony to all those who have believed in my work over the past decades.
“I trust it will also be of encouragement to women artists everywhere that in this 21st Century the ‘glass ceiling' in the arts is finally being shattered.
“I am also elated that the sales value reflects that art doesn't need to be confronting or shocking to be considered of high worth.
“It is time for works that inspire and uplift to have their ‘turn in the sun'.
“All the best. Thank you."Davson’s art is represented in public
collections including in the Hikaru Memorial Museum in Takayama, Japan, the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin and 40 public art gallery, city or university collections. Her art is also represented in 2 royal collections and over 60 corporate collections in Australia, the USA, Japan and New Zealand.
From 1999 to 2002, Davson’s major retrospective exhibition With Gratitude For The Light toured 14 public regional art galleries throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. It showcased 63 artworks dating from 1972 to 1999. ‘Points of View’ featured in this inspirational touring exhibition.
The majority of these exhibition pieces were borrowed back from public, corporate and private collections, including the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Coro Corp. New Zealand & Hawaii, Cathay Pacific Airways, Konica Australia, the Rooty Hill RSL Club &
Resort, the Win Davson Art Gallery & Museum and the private collection of James Fairfax AO.
2008-11 saw another retrospective exhibition Davson ~ World Leaders & Enlightenment tour. This featured art works from 1973 to 2007 which were mainly borrowed from superannuation fund collections.
Davson currently resides in Newcastle NSW. Her art and its benefits to the immediate and broader communities are held in high regard. Davson has recently been supported as the creative leader of a new Spiritualism in art and is readily identified as a Personal Globalist. She established two charities, assisting endangered species and promoting world peace, and continues to participate in benefitting other community organisations.
Over 300 world-renowned leaders
have supported her work. From cultural, entertainment and sporting arenas, they have included Sir Edmund Hillary, Neil Diamond, Paul Newman, Sir Cliff Richard, Dame Joan Sutherland, Sir Nigel Mansell, Mario Andretti, Pete Sampras, Linda Evangelista, the Hon. Pat Farmer, Layne Beachley, Cathy Freeman, Andre Agassi, Bon Jovi and many more.
Davson was recently a significant sponsor of Pat Farmer’s epic run from the North Pole to the South Pole through the Americas as documented in his book Pole to Pole run. Pat Farmer was visiting Davson’s studio gallery to discuss the progress of a major painting she is creating as the official artist to the Pole to Pole event, when the Fairfax news photographer arrived recently. Both athlete and artist have received comments such as “can’t be done”. Both are major achievers in their respective arenas.
A realistic visionary, Davson is the artist world leaders follow.
Contact Davson Art management to acquire her art from $5,000 and upwards and to learn more about why Davson’s art has experienced better than approximately 20% per annum growth for collector / investors for more than two decades.
“It’s most recent sale also places
the painting third in the world
by value for a painting by a living
female artist.”

TALK BACKWITH
RobMills
OCCUPATION: Actor, singer, TV host.
FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY:South Africa. I travelled with friends to the World Cup, saw the Aussies play their hearts out, then travelled around. It's a beautiful country.
TRAVEL TIP: Don't fall asleep on the beach - you're bound to lose possessions.
MOST EMBARRASSING/FUNNY TRAVEL MOMENT: In the first few days of the first trip on my own, I lost my wallet and travel documents! Lucky I had a travel agent back home to help.
WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU NEXT? On tour with the very talented Young Talent Team, can't wait! These kids are amazing. Then into rehearsals for Legally Blonde The Musical which opens in Sydney in October. n
