Our national judge is John Rowton of Oregonand sweepstakes just is soon to be confirmed. Youwill be able to find all the information and thepremium list here;

I recently received an email from a BC Club askingfor the MSCC to sponsor a booster this fall in theOkanogan and this made me think that it would bewonderful to see the club sponsor boosters acrossthe country. So at this time I am asking themembers to look into clubs in their province that would like a sponsored booster at theirevent. This undertaking would be a small time commitment, and if as a club we work on thisquickly we would be able to purchase prizes perhaps in bulk and at a discount. So if wecould have members bring forward their ideas ASAP that would be wonderful.

Please watch for out next online meeting scheduled for Wednesday April 26th. I will be outof the country for this meeting, but will be posting and monitoring the event when internetaccess allows.

I wish you all the best, and good luck at the shows!

Brian

Ribbons and Trophies Kate McMillan:

“I have the plaques for the trophies in for engraving of 2016 winners, with luck they'll be done in timefor me to install before I leave for the Portland shows. We've arranged transport of the trophy boxback to the Island, with some luck!

There are a few ribbons left over from last year, and a few rosettes. There are also a number of flatsfor class placements, but they're kind of a grab bag of mismatches.

Our ribbon provider (Centaur Awards) is good at sending ribbons out after the entry is finalized, butthis means that whoever is ordering ribbons really needs to be on the ball, in contact with the showsec for final class entry numbers, etc. and gets them to Centaur right away. They also send themCOD, so you'll have to pay for them out of pocket and be reimbursed.”

Sudden acquired retinal degeneration in dogs: breeddistribution of 495 caninesAR Heller, A Woerdt, JE Gaarder ...First published: 3 March 2016 Journal of Veterinary Ophthalmology

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to describe breed, age, gender, and weightdistribution of dogs affected with sudden acquired retinal degeneration (SARD) andto investigate whether SARD is more common in small breed dogs.

Methods

Medical records of dogs diagnosed with SARD confirmed by an electroretinogramwere reviewed. Breed, age, gender, and weight were recorded when available. Thesame data were obtained for dogs with SARD described in the veterinary literature.

Results

Three hundred and two dogs were included from the ophthalmology practices and193 dogs from the veterinary literature. Sixty breeds were present in the study.Mixed breed dogs were the most common at 108 dogs (21.8%), followed by theDachshund (68, 13.7%), Chinese Pug (44, 8.9%), Miniature Schnauzer (39, 7.9%),Maltese (23, 4.6%), Cocker Spaniel (22, 4.4%), Bichon Frise (18, 3.6%), Beagle(16, 3.2%), Brittany (15, 3.0%), and Pomeranian (10, 2.0%). Fifty other breedswere represented by 1–9 dogs each. The median age was 9 years (range = 10months–16 years). The weight was known for 197 dogs. About 60.9% of dogs wereless than 25 pounds, 31.5% were between 25 and 50 pounds, and 7.6% weregreater than 50 pounds. Gender was recorded in 393 dogs: 217 female dogs and176 male dogs.

Conclusions

As previously reported, SARD is most common in middle aged to older dogs.Smaller dogs of less than 25 pounds appear overrepresented, while large/giantbreed dogs of greater than 50 pounds are infrequently diagnosed. In this study, there was no statistical significance between female and male dogs.

Q: Can two black Miniature Schnauzers produce an all colour litter?

A: Yes, they can if all the right genes are in place!

This example is of a black dog bred to a black bitch, producing an all threecolour litter.

The big K represents the black gene, and little k is for "non black".

The "A" locus is where the genes for salt/pepper (aw agouti wild) andblack/silver (at agouti tanpoint) are located.

As you can see, the general expectation would be 3/4 black puppies, with theremaining divided ithus: one homozygous salt/pepper (awaw), one black andsilver (atat), and two s/p carriers of black and silver (awat).

If you study it for a time, it will explain how it is possible for two black dogs toproduce puppies of all three colours providing both parents areheterozygous black, and carry both the agouti alleles!
