HALF DAY CAMPS

Coaching soccer to 6 - 9 Year-Olds

Coaching Curriculum

Page 7: MINI KICKERS FIRST KICKS - Your Total Soccer Solution · PDF fileMINI KICKERS & FIRST KICKS Introducing soccer to 3-6 Year-Olds Coaching Curriculum

HALF DAY CAMP AGES 6 - 9 SESSION STRUCTURE The Format for each half day session is two hours of developmental practices followed by 20 minutes for water break activities and then 40 minutes for the World Cup. WARM UP - consists of 35 minutes of Ball Mastery (BM) & Skill Moves Introduction to fast feet activities and ball familiarity interspersed with dynamic stretching. Dynamic Stretching (DS) - At this age level this is done very lightly but MUST BE DONE. These are soccer related moves e.g. flicking heels up, knees up. Also, players jogging then stepping into a forward stretch or moving backwards to a quad squat stretch. Both of these (ball mastery, dynamic stretching) must be done at the start of every practice. They can be done with each other: e.g. BM – 2min, DS- 2min, BM – 2min, DS – 2min, BM-2min But always start the warm up with TT and end the warm up with TT. DRILL - UNOPPOSED The first activity that any player regardless of age or ability is introduced to is an unopposed drill. This allows the player the opportunity to learn the technique without pressure and helps build confidence. DRILL – OPPOSED The next activity must place the player under pressure. This pressure can come in many forms e.g. defender, time constraint. One very useful tool is the inclusion of competition and having the players challenged by playing against each other. Many a short drill can be adapted to include “playing for points” and a “ladder system” introduced where players play against partner then move up or down to play against other players. This combination of practicing the technique under pressure helps to develop skill. CONDITIONED SMALL SIDED GAMES Players learn through playing small sided games as this allows more touches of the ball which in turn increases all their technical and tactical abilities. Teams of 4 players per team playing 1 game before changing and the playing against another team. The conditions imposed upon the players should relate to the theme of the session. COOL DOWN It is important that each player and team get into the habit of cooling down after they take part in physical activity. This involves light jogging down to a walk and static stretching. At this age only basic stretching is required and should not be extensive

Only one player per cone Coaching Points – Keep ball close with little touches Keep your head up and show good vision Accelerate with ball when coach shouts stop Use different parts of the foot

Coaching Points – Same as previous exercise. Show awareness of open space Perform a good technical turn at the right time

Have a supply of balls next to the defenders Action: The 1st defender passes a ball out into the grid and the 1st attackers chases it down. Defender follows the pass and closes down the attacker. Can the attacker beat the defender with a turn and get a shot on goal? Award points for good turns and each goal scored. Coaching Points:

• Get to the ball quickly • Have a look to see where the defender is • Can we turn into the space, not into the

defender? • Accelerate away from the defender

Variations:

Action: Two equal teams compete with each player being paired up “man to man” with a member of the opposing team. When a player receives a pass or wins possession in their offensive half they must immediately attack the goal and attempt to take on their “man to man” marker. If they beat their marker their team can then play without restriction until the ball is cleared in to the other half of the field. Coaching Points:

Coaching Curriculum

Format for Full Day Camps

Page 19: MINI KICKERS FIRST KICKS - Your Total Soccer Solution · PDF fileMINI KICKERS & FIRST KICKS Introducing soccer to 3-6 Year-Olds Coaching Curriculum

The format for the Full day camp is basically to run a regular half day camp in the first three hour session. The half day curriculum will depend on the age of the group e.g. on some occasions you may have a group of 8 year olds on a full day camp. If this is the case you would follow the 6 – 9 year old half day curriculum. For any groups ages 10 or older then use the 10 – 16 year old half day curriculum. For the second three hour session you will use the following session templates – you will receive this in your curriculum booklet given to you at check-in.
