Setting the Clock

The built-in clock shows the time in thedisplay even if the power is off.Use the buttons on the unit to do thisoperation.

NoteOnce you set the clock, the demo mode,that activates when the power is turned off,is cancelled automatically.

1 Press TIMER.The stereo enters the clock/timer mode.

2 Press CLOCK SET.The hour indication begins flashing.

3 Set the current hour by turning the JOGdial until the correct hour appears.

4 Press ENTER/NEXT.The minutes indication begins flashing.

5 Set the current minute by turning theJOG dial until the correct minuteappears.

Inserting theBatteries

Install two R6 (size AA) batteries in thesupplied remote for remote control.

1 Slide the lid to remove it.

2 Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries.Match the + and – to the diagram in thebattery compartment.

3 Close the lid.

Battery lifeYou can expect the remote to operate forabout six months (using Sony SUM-3 (NS)batteries) before the batteries run down.When the batteries no longer operate theremote, replace all the batteries with newones.

To avoid battery leakageIf you are not going to use the remote for along time, remove the batteries to avoiddamage caused by corrosion from batteryleakage.

6 Press ENTER/NEXT.The clock starts running and the upperdot flashes. Use the time signal to set theclock accurately.The upper dot flashes for the first half ofa minute (0 to 29 seconds), and thelower dot flashes for the last half of aminute (30 to 59 seconds).

To check the time while power is onPress DISPLAY a few times.The current time is displayed for 8 seconds.

To correct the clock settingRepeat steps 1 through 6.

Playing CDs (normalplay)

You can play all the tracks on up to threediscs consecutively in their original order(normal play). Before you play the CD,decrease the sound level by turning theVOLUME control counter-clockwise, toprevent damage to the speakers.

1 Press § OPEN/CLOSE/EX-CHANGEand place up to two CDs (label sidefacing up) on the disc tray.

2 Press DISC SKIP to insert a third disc, ifnecessary.The disc tray rotates so you can insertanother CD.

The Music Calendar DisplayThis display lights according to the numberof tracks on the CD. As each track is played,the corresponding number disappears.Tracks numbered in excess of 20 are notdisplayed.

What the green and orange DISC buttonindicators indicateIndicators are provided on the DISCbuttons for each of the respective disc trays(DISC 1–3).•A green indicator shows that the tray is

selected (either during playback orstandby, or when the tray is open) nomatter if there is a CD inside or not.

•An orange indicator shows that there is aCD in the tray but the tray is not selected.

•When the indicator is off, there is no CDin the tray and the tray is not selected.

Automatic Source SelectionIf the CD player has been in the normalplay mode, you can select the CD playerjust by pressing ·P or the DISC 1 – 3buttons.If the CD player has been in the programmeplay or the shuffle play mode, only ·Pcan be used for this function.

If there is no CD in the player“NO DISC” appears in the display.Press ·P (or CD ( on the remote) whilethe indication is on, then the CD tray willopen automatically.

Playing Tracks inRandom Order(shuffle play)

You can play all the tracks on one CD or allCDs in random order.Use the buttons on the unit to do thisoperation.

To find a point in a trackYou can find a particular point in a trackwhile the track is playing or while it’s inpause mode. Use the buttons on the remoteto operate this feature.

You can make a programme of up to32 tracks from all the CDs in the order youwant them to be played.


2 Place the CD(s) on the disc tray.

3 Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until“PROGRAM” and ”DISC” appear in thedisplay.

4 Turn the JOG dial to choose a track.The track number and the total playingtime appear.

Playing tracks in a clip(CLIP PLAY)

CLIP indicator(s) light in the display to letyou know when clips are stored for a disc.

1 Press CLIP PLAY.

2 Press a CLIP button (A, B, or C).“CLIP PLAY” appears in the displayand the selected CLIP indicator lights.The player starts playing tracks from theselected clip.

Notes• In 1 DISC mode, the tracks stored for the

selected disc are played back once, thenclip play is released.

• In ALL DISCS mode, all the tracks storedfor the currently loaded discs are playedback once, then clip play is released.

Erasing tracks from a clip

Erasing 1 track1 Press CLIP PLAY.2 Press the CLIP button (A, B, or C) for the

clip containing the track you want toerase.

3 Use the JOG dial to select the track youwant to erase.

4 Press CLIP ERASE.“ERASE A - C” and “TRACK” appearalternately in the display.

5 Press the CLIP button (A, B, or C) youpressed in step 2 to erase the track.

Erasing all the tracksAll tracks stored in a CLIP will be erased.1 In stop mode, press CLIP ERASE.

“ERASE A - C” and “ALL” appearalternately in the display.

2 Press a CLIP button (A, B, or C) tospecify the clip you want to erase.

Storing effects in a clip

You can store one equalizer effect in eachmusic clip. When you play the clip, theeffect activates automatically, even ifEFFECT ON/OFF is set to OFF.

1 Use the graphic equalizer and surroundsound to adjust the sound as you desire(see “Sound Adjustment”).

2 Press and hold down a CLIP button (A,B, or C) to store the current equalizerand surround levels in the respectiveclip.“LINK (A, B, or C)” appears in thedisplay and the effect is stored in theclip.

To change the effectStore a new effect. The previous effect isreplaced by the new one.

To cancel the effect1 Press and hold CLIP ERASE.

“SELECT A - C” and “LINK OFF”appear alternately in the display.

2 Press the CLIP button (A, B, or C) for theclip containing the effect you want toturn off.“LINK (A, B, or C) OFF” appears in thedisplay and the effect is erased from theclip.

Grouping Tracks(music clip)

The music clip function is an easy way tocreate up to 3 arbitrary groups of tracksfrom your CDs. For example, you couldstore tracks for the morning in CLIP A,tracks to play for your friends in CLIP B,and tracks for relaxing in CLIP C.Once you store one or more tracks in amusic clip(s), the player recalls those trackswhenever you play the respective disc

Storing tracks in a clip

1 Play the track you want to store, or (instop mode) use the JOG dial to select thetrack you want.

2 Press a CLIP button (A, B, or C).“CLIP FILE” appears and the selectedCLIP indicator (A, B, or C) appears inthe display. Normal playback continues.

3 Repeat steps 1 and 2 to store other tracksinto the same, or a different, clip.

If the memory becomes fullThe clip data for the oldest clip is erased tomake room for a new clip.

Notes•Only tracks numbered 1 – 20 can be

stored in music clips.•In stop mode, you cannot store tracks in a

music clip if “PROGRAM” is displayed.

Listening to theRadio

When you want to play a radioprogramme, you can have the tunerautomatically scan the radio frequenciesand tune in the stations with clear signals.This feature saves you time in searching forstations with clear signals. However,stations with weak signals may be skippedby automatic tuning. Manually tune in theones skipped by automatic tuning.

1 Press TUNER/BAND (or BAND on theremote) repeatedly until the band youwant appears in the display.As you press this button, the bandchanges as follows:

German and Italian modelsFM ˜ AM

Other modelsFM n MW n LW

2 Press TUNING MODE repeatedly until“AUTO” appears in the display.

3 Turn the JOG dial clockwise to scan ahigher frequency station. To tune in alower frequency station, turn the JOGdial counter-clockwise.

The tuner starts scanning radiofrequencies, and stops automaticallywhen it finds a clear station.“TUNED” appears in the display.“STEREO” also appears if the tuned FMstation is broadcasting in stereo.

4 If you do not want to listen to the stationselected, turn the JOG dial again torestart the scan.

If the tuner finds an RDS stationThe frequency display changes to thestation name.

When the desired station is nottuned inAutomatic tuning may skip stations with aweak signals. Tune in the station manually.1 Press TUNING MODE repeatedly until

“MANUAL” appears in the display.2 Keep turning the JOG dial until the

desired station is tuned in.

To improve MW/LW/AM broadcastreceptionReorient the supplied AM loop aerial forMW/LW/AM.

When an FM programme is not clear toreceivePress STEREO/MONO on the remote sothat “MONO” appears in the display. Therewill be no stereo effect, but the receptionwill improve. Press STEREO/MONO againto restore the stereo effect.

One Touch Play featurePress TUNER/BAND when the power isoff. You will be able to start listening to thelast received station without pressing anyother buttons.

Note•When you listen to the sound source other

than tuner, you can select the tuner bypressing TUNER/BAND (AutomaticSource Selection).

1 Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly toselect the band you want.

Tuning byProgramme Type(PTY)

You can use this tuners programme type(PTY) function to tune preset stationsaccording to the type of programme youwant to hear.Be sure to preset radio stations beforehand.

1 Press TUNER/BAND to select the FMband.

2 Press PTY.“SELECT” appears in the display.

3 Use the JOG dial to select theprogramme type (PTY) you desire.(See the following page for descriptionsof the available program types.)

4 Press ENTER/NEXT.The tuner searches the preset stations forthe selected programme type.

When the tuner locates a presetstationA preset station number flashes in thedisplay, and the tuner changes to thatstation’s frequency.

If more than one preset stationnumber flashes in the displayThere is more than one preset stationbroadcasting the selected PTY.Use the jog dial to select the preset stationyou desire and press ENTER/NEXT whilethe preset station number flashes in thedisplay.

Presetting RadioStations

You can store radio frequencies in thetuner’s memory to tune in your favouritestations quickly. You can preset up to20 FM stations, 10 MW stations and 10 LWstations in any order. For German andItalian models, you can preset up to 20 FMand 10 AM stations.Use the buttons on the unit for presettingstations.

1 Tune in a station you want to store inthe preset memory.

2 Press TUNER MEMORY.“MEMORY” and the preset channelnumber appear in the display.

3 Turn the JOG dial to select a presetchannel number.

4 Press ENTER/NEXT.The station is stored at the presetnumber you selected.

5 Repeat steps 1 to 4 for each station youwant to store.

To erase a stored stationStore a new station at a previously usedpreset channel number. It will erase the oldstation and replace it with the new station.

If you have trouble storing a station or ifyou made a mistakeRepeat steps 1 to 5.

Playing a Tape

You can use TYPE I (normal), TYPE II(CrO2) and TYPE IV (metal) tapes. Whenyou insert a tape, the deck detects the tapetype automatically.

1 Press § EJECT to open tapecompartment.Insert a recorded tape in deck A or Bwith the tape side facing down and theside you want to play facing forward.Push to close the compartment.

2 Press · (to play the front side) or ª(to play the reverse side).The tape starts playing.

Recording a CD

You can record from a CD to a tape. UseTYPE I (normal) or TYPE II (CrO2) tapes.Do not use TYPE IV (metal) tapes forrecording.You cannot listen to other sources whilerecording.

Recording a CDAutomatically

By using the CD SYNCHRO button, youcan record from a CD to a tape easily.Use the buttons on the unit for thisoperation.

1 Press § EJECT and insert a blank tapeinto deck B with the side you want torecord on facing forward.Recording starts from the front side ofthe tape, unless you change the playingdirection before recording.Make sure the tabs on the cassette havenot been removed.

2 Press § OPEN/CLOSE/EX-CHANGEand place a CD.Then, press § OPEN/CLOSE/EX-CHANGE again to close the CD tray.If the indicator for the disc traycontaining the CD you want to record isnot lit green, press DISC SKIPrepeatedly so that it lights green.

3 Select dual or single-sided recording.

* Recording always stops at the end of thereverse side. Be sure to start from thefront side.

4 Press CD SYNCHRO.Deck B stands by for recording.

5 Press P PAUSE to release recordingpause.Recording starts.After about 10 seconds, the CD startsplaying.

The player will notprogramme those tracks beyond tracknumber 20. Use the buttons on both theunit and the remote to do this operation.

Selecting The AudioEmphasis

Your stereo system is provided with 20different preset effects (music menu)created from different graphic equalizerand surround effect settings.With the press of a single button, you canchoose between a variety of effectsaccording to musical genre or use. Thepersonal file function (see “Making aPersonal Audio Emphasis File (personalfile)”) lets you store your own effects.

1 Press one of the MENU buttons.See the chart “Music menu Options” onthe following page. The last effectchosen from that menu appears in thedisplay.

2 Use the JOG dial to select the preset youdesire.The preset name appears in the display.

3 Press ENTER/NEXT.

Adjusting the Sound

If you use the Dynamic Bass FeedbackSystem with the graphic equalizerIf the bass is too strong, the music willsound distorted. Adjust the bass slowlywhile listening to music so that you canmonitor the effect of the adjustment.

To get a powerful sound (GROOVE)Press GROOVE.The volume switches to power mode, DBFBis automatically set to full strength, theequalizer curve changes, and the“GROOVE” button lights up. PressGROOVE again to return to the previousvolume.

Note• Cancelling GROOVE does not cancel the

DBFB level or equalizer curve.To cancel the DBFB level, press DBFBrepeatedly until “DBFB ” or“DBFB ” dissapears from the display.Adjust the equalization to obtain the effectyou desire.

3 Repeat steps 1 and 2.

4 Press SURROUND if you want to addthe surround effect.“SUR ” appears in the display.Press again to cancel.

5 Press ENTER/NEXT when finished.The equalizer dissapears from thedisplay but you can hear the effect of theadjustments.

Note•If you choose another menu audio

emphasis (other than “EFFECT OFF”) theadjusted sound effect is lost. To retain theadjusted sound effect for future use, storeit in a personal file. (See “Making aPersonal Audio Emphasis (personalfile)”.)

You can use the surround effect withoutconnecting surround speakers.Before operation, first select the audioemphasis you want for your basic sound.

Making a PersonalAudio Emphasis File(personal file)

You can create a personal file of audiopatterns and store them in the memory ofthe graphic equalizer. Later call up anaudio pattern to play a favourite tape, CD,or radio programme. Create up to fiveaudio files.Before operation, first select the audioemphasis you want for your basic sound.

1 Obtain the sound effect you want byusing the graphic equalizer andsurround effect.

2 Press MEMORY while the equalizercurve is flashing.The personal file number appears in thedisplay.

3 Use the JOG dial to select the filenumber (P FILE) where you want tostore the sound effect.

4 Press ENTER/NEXT.The adjusted sound effects are storedunder the selected file number. Thesettings previously stored at thismemory location are erased andreplaced by the new settings.

Falling Asleep toMusic

You can set the stereo system to turn offautomatically so you can go to sleep tomusic (sleep timer).Before setting the sleep timer, make surethe clock has been set correctly.This stereo system allows combined use ofthe sleep and wakeup timers.

1 Play your favourite sound source (atape, the tuner or a CD).

2 Press SLEEP repeatedly to choose howlong you want the music to play.The sleep time indication appears in thedisplay.

AUTO n 90 n 80 ... 10 n OFF

The minute indication sets the timer toturn the power off after 90 to 10 minutesin ten minute intervals.

When you choose AUTOThe power turns off when the current CDor tape (side 1) finishes playback (for up to100 minutes). The power will also turn off,even if you fast forward or rewind the tape.

To cancel the sleep timerPress SLEEP repeatedly until “OFF”appears in the display.

To check the remaining time beforethe sleep timer turns off the systemPress SLEEP once.The remaining time (in minutes) isdisplayed for several seconds.

To change the remaining time whilethe sleep timer is onPress SLEEP repeatedly to select theremaining time you desire.

To turn off the system before thesleep timer turns off the systemPress SYSTEM POWER.

Waking Up to Music

You can wake up to music at a preset time.You only need to set the timer once. Whenyou select the CD player as the soundsource, you can play a CD in any mode(normal, shuffle, or programme). Beforesetting the timer, make sure the clock hasbeen set correctly.

1 Prepare the sound source.

In case colour irregularity isobserved on nearby TV screenWith the magnetically shielded type ofspeaker system, the speakers can beinstalled near a TV set. However, colourirregularity may still be observed on the TVscreen depending on the type of your TVset.

If colour irregularity is observed...Turn off the TV set once, then turn it onafter 15 to 30 minutes.

If colour irregularity is observedagain...Place the speakers farther away from theTV set.

TroubleshootingGuide

If you run into any problem using thestereo system, use the following check list.And first check the following points:•The mains lead is connected firmly.•The speakers are connected correctly and

firmly.Should any problem persist after you havemade the checks below, consult yournearest Sony dealer.

Tuner

“TUNED” flashes in the display. Adjust the aerial.

“STEREO” flashes in the display. Adjust the aerial.

Severe hum or noise. Adjust the aerial. The signal strength is too weak.

Connect the external aerial. Connect the earth lead.

A stereo FM programme cannot bereceived in stereo.

Press STEREO/MONO so that“STEREO” appears.

RDS station name does not appearon the display.

Contact the radio station and findout whether they actually providethe RDS service. If so, it may betemporarily out of order.

Precautions

If you have any questions or problemsconcerning your stereo system, pleaseconsult your nearest Sony dealer.

On safety• The unit is not disconnected from the AC

power source (mains) as long as it isconnected to the wall outlet, even if theunit itself has been turned off.

• Unplug the system from the mains if it isnot to be used for an extended period oftime. To disconnect the mains lead, pull itout by the plug. Never pull the cord itself.

• Should any solid object or liquid fall intothe component, unplug the stereo systemand have the component checked byqualified personnel before operating itany further.

• AC power cord must be changed only atthe qualified service shop.

On installationPlace the stereo system in a location withadequate ventilation to prevent heat build-up in the stereo system.

On condensation in the CD playercomponentIf the system is brought directly from a coldto a warm location, or is placed in a verydamp room, moisture may condense on thelens inside the CD player. Should thisoccur, the CD player will not operate.Remove the CD and leave the systemturned on for about an hour until themoisture evaporates.

To save a tape permanentlyTo prevent a tape from being accidentallyrecorded over, break off the cassette tabfrom side A or B as illustrated. If you laterwant to reuse the tape for recording, coverthe broken tab with adhesive tape.

When you are using a TYPE II (CrO2) orTYPE IV (metal) cassette, be careful not tocover the detector slots which allow thetape player to automatically detect the typeof tape.

Maintenance

To clean the tape heads and tapepathContaminated tape heads cause poorrecording or sound drop-out in playback.We recommend cleaning after every10 hours of operation.

Open the tape compartment and wipe theheads, the pinch rollers and the capstanswith a cleaning swab slightly moistenedwith cleaning fluid or alcohol. Wipe theparts shown below:

Insert a tape when the areas cleaned arecompletely dry.

To demagnetize the tape headsAfter 20 to 30 hours of use, enough residualmagnetism will have built up on the headsto begin to cause loss of high frequenciesand hiss. At this time, demagnetize theheads and all metal parts in the tape pathwith a commercially available tape headdemagnetizer. Refer to the instructions ofthe demagnetizer.

To clean the cabinetUse a soft cloth slightly moistened withmild detergent solution.

To clean the CDWhen a CD is dirty, clean it with a cleaningcloth. Wipe the CD from the centre out.

Notes on CD•Do not use solvents such as benzene,

thinner, commercially available cleaners,or antistatic spray intended for vinyl LPs.

•If there is a scratch, dirt or fingerprints onthe CD, it may cause a tracking error.

Tape Player

The tape does not record. No tape in the cassette holder. The tab has been removed from

the cassette. The tape has reeled to the end.

The tape does not record norplayback or there is a decrease insound level.

The heads are dirty. Clean them.* Magnetic deposits have built-up

on the record/playback heads.*

There is excessive wow or flutter, orthe sound drops out.

The capstans or pinch rollers arecontaminated.*

The tape does not erase completely. Magnetic deposits have built-up

on the record/playback heads.*

Noise increases or the highfrequencies are erased.

Magnetic deposits have built-upon the record/playback heads.*

CD Player

The disc tray does not close. The CD is not placed correctly.

The CD will not play. The CD is dirty. The CD is inserted label side

down. The player is in pause mode. Moisture condensation has built

up.Leave the system turned on for

about an hour until the moistureevaporates.

“NO DISC” is displayed. There is no CD in the player.

Play does not start from the firsttrack.

The player is in programme orshuffle mode. Press PLAY MODEso that “PROGRAM” or“SHUFFLE” goes out.

General

There is no sound. Rotate VOLUME clockwise. The headphones are connected.

Disconnect them.

Sound comes from one channel orunbalanced left and right volume.

Check the speaker connections ofthe inoperative channel.

The left and right sound arereversed.

Check the speaker connectionand speaker placement.

Bass is lacking or the location of themusical instruments is apparentlyimprecise.

Check the speaker connection forproper phasing.

There is severe hum or noise. A TV or VCR is too close to the

stereo system. Move the stereosystem away from the TV or VCR.

“0:00” or demo display flashes in thedisplay.

A power interruption occurred.Set the clock and timer settingsagain.

The remote does not function. The batteries have run down.

Replace both batteries. There is an obstacle between the

remote and the system. Remove theobstacle.
