STRATEGIC UNCERTAINTY AND ENVIRONMENTALSCANNING: THE CASE FOR INSTITUTIONALINFLUENCES ON SCANNING BEHAVIOSchool of Management and Business, Adelphi University, Garden City, NewYork, U.S.A. RDETELIN S. ELENKOVStrategic Management Journal, Vol. 18:4, 287302 (1997)Challenges to any industry is viewed as an opportunity to explore the boundaries of existing business models and grow. An organization has to calibrate its response towards an ever changing market by conducting a thorough mapping of the industry environment. Strategic choices are made based on analysis of the immediate vicinity of functioning of the company which includes suppliers, customers, regulatory bodies and competitors. General social, economic and political factors have a bearing on strategic initiatives being taken. Management teaches the advantages of working towards building sustainable processes keeping in mind not the demand of the present day; but by trying to latch on to the latent demand present and gearing up for futuristic trends. Heuristics is involved in the process. Analysing trends in the market, while evaluating perceived environmental changes is an often overlooked resource which if interpreted properly can be wielded as competitive advantage.

Elenkovs article particularly grabs attention because he mostly talks about looking at the horizon while conducting business and implores strategic flexibility in decision making. But being an academician, prophesising these preachy words is easy. He refers to empirical proof of managers having access to way to much data from the environment for them to comprehend. He tries to support his theoretical claims with this data. It would have been had a real world practitioner with executive powers can really add real world insight to theoretical claims.Morrison, J.
