The "Introduction" explains the generation numbering system which begins with the American Lineage and how the records have been logically organized and printed.

We the "Seneca County Ohio Shermans" are indebted to our cousin Alonzo Sherman of Oscoda Michigan whose efforts and computer have stored all of our family records for this publication and future updates. Alonzo's great-great grandfather is Alden Sherman (1802-1881) shown above, and the others are his siblings.

We are also indebted to all the cousins who have furnished input, but especially those descendants of Zephaniah's daughter Rachel.

For those of you who are interested in more of your Sherman family history you may order any of the various sections as shown below in the Introduction. Order directly from Alonzo at the address show in the introduction.

We hope you will enjoy this family history and after reading about your cousins you will decide to attend the annual Sherman reunion at the Hedges-Boyer Park in Tiffin, Ohio at noon on the fourth Sunday of August. The 1995 reunion will be the 75th and should be a big one.

Very truly yours

INTRODUCTION

The Seneca Co OH Shermans - Part II is jointly compiled by Eldon and Alonzo Sherman, and is was last published January 23 1995 by Eldon Sherman, 86 Wentz St, Tiffin OH 44883. The Seneca Co OH Shermans - Part I included Howland Sherman and his descendants, was last published October 10 2000.

The Seneca Co OH Shermans - Part I & II are part of the overall Sherman Genealogy 1433-2000s, compiled by Alonzo Joseph Sherman 308 W Dwight St, Oscoda MI 48750.

The system used for numbering our American ancestors starts with Philip Sherman the first "Sherman" in our family who came to America in 1633. The generation number is shown in superscript as Philip1 Sherman. Each following generation is given the next higher number: Philip's sons and daughters are shown as John2 Sherman and Sarah2 Sherman etc.

The generation numbers show the order of the generations, and are not intended to show direct lineage.

All "allied names", for the purpose of organizing this manuscript, are given the generation number of the "Sherman" they are associated with.

The six "English Sherman" ancestors preceding Philip1 Sherman are shown as Thomas1E Sherman (1433-1492) thru Samuel6E Sherman (1574-1615): Samuel6E Sherman is the father of Philip1

Sherman.

Within a family branch each family group is shown in generation sequence, with the oldest generation first and the youngest generation last.

The information for each family group is divided into three parts. The first part is some summary information. The second part is detailed information about the parents presented in an dated event sequence: Which contains where they were born, lived, died and buried; their occupation; their marriage; and other items of interest. The third part is detailed information about the children:

Which immediately follows the parents' information and is in the same format as the parents. Children are shown in order from the oldest to the youngest.

For women, when both the maiden and married surnames are used together, the married name is shown last and is in parenthesis.

References used infrequently are spelled out and shown in parenthesis following the normal text. References used frequently are abbreviated to conserve space and are also shown in parenthesis following the text. The abbreviations explained in the Reference at the end of this paper.

This genealogy is an on going project and is being updated continuously. We have done a large amount of original research on the newer generations of Shermans, starting at generation 6 (Elihu Sherman 1777-1841), much of which has not been published before. Most information for the older generations have been previously published.

The basic identification of ancestors is complete, to our knowledge. The textual information about the ancestors is quite extensive (about 500 pages) and it is always being added to.

The Sherman Genealogy: 1433-2000s is prepared for our family. It is not intended to be published in book form. However, it was made available on microfilm in 1995 from the Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in their Family History Center's. The information is currently kept on an IBM compatible computer in MS-Word format, in a manuscript format. This is because it is easier to update, and also it is possible to easily produce current extracts any time one is requested.

We gladly furnish copies of the genealogy at cost, or any part of it, to those requesting it. The genealogy is organized so selected parts can be printed for other people, as generally only our family would find all of it applicable. The parts of the Sherman Genealogical: 1433-2000s that are applicable to the Seneca Co OH Shermans are:

The Ohio State Census adds the following information to the above Federal Census: 60 acres improved and 20 acres in woodlot; value of implements $100; wages paid $100; value of all livestock $450 consisting of 3 horses, 2 milch cows, 5 other cattle, 24 sheep, 1 swine; produce during the year was 140 bu winter wheat, 250 bu indian corn, 200 bu oats, 120 lbs wool, 40 bu potatoes, 100 bu orchard products, 150 lbs butter, 25 tons hay; value of animal slaughtered $85; estimated value of farm production $600.

1872. Mar 13th, John and Rachel sold the 80 acres in Reed Twp for $4,000, which they had purchased in 1861 (Seneca Co Land Records).

1873. Apr 23rd, John and Rachel purchased 50 acres in Scipio Twp Seneca Co OH for $2,000 (NE corner of NW 1/4 Sec 35) (Seneca Co Land Records; 1874 Atlas).

1880. Census of Scipio Twp Seneca Co OH indicated: J W Rine age 48 (sic), farmer, born in OH; Rachel Rine age 46, born in NY; son Alvin (p3/d4/f33). John's age should be about 53 years.

1886. John Wesley Rine family mentioned (History of Seneca Co, Warner-Beers & Company, 1886).

1897. John Wesley Rine died on Jun 2nd or 4th 1897. The cemetery marker reads 1828-1898. The Republic area section of the Tiffin Daily Tribune for Monday Jun 7 1897 reads, "the funeral services of the late J W Ryan [Rine] were held at his home Friday [Jun 4]. The remains were interred in Union Cemetery [later renamed Albright Cemetery] in Adams Twp." The cemetery is located on CR-32 just East of CR-21 in Adams Twp Seneca Co OH.

The Bloomville area news in the Tribune for Wednesday June 9 1897 reads "Wesley Ryan [Rine] an old and respected citizen living 3 miles NE of here died Friday morning [Jun 4] of last week and was buried near Clyde Sunday [Jun 6 1897].

1900. Census of Scipio Twp Seneca Co OH indicated: Rachel Rine age 64, born Apr 1836, widow, 1 child 1 alive (sic), lived with son Alvin (p10/d236/f244).

1909/12. Rachel died, buried next to her husband. Tombstone reads Rachel Rine 1834-blank (mc/rr). The date of her death could not be determined, but is thought to be between 1909 and 1912.

1910. The Census did not show Rachel as living in Scipio Twp where she and her husband was located SE of Republic OH, and where she was living with her son Alvin and his family in the 1900 Census. She may have been living elsewhere as her son Alvin died in 1901 and his wife Mary Jane Rine had remarried to Adam Breitweiser and this family appears to have been living in the Rine family home.

1912. Both parcels of land purchased by John in 1873 and 1874 were sold. Since both John and his son Alvin were deceased, the proceeds were divided between Alvin's widowed Mary Jane and Alvin's children: No mention was made of Rachel, which indicated she was also deceased. The deed index at the County Recorders Office indicated "Jno W Rhine" (sic) as the grantor indicating the land had not been transferred after his death in 1898. 2 Children:(Gen Refs: REHS p12; DPS p490; mc/ees).

1. Mary Jane 9 Rine born 1852/54 in Seneca Co OH: Birth record not found. Died before 1886: No cemetery marker or death record in Seneca Co. Only record on Mary Jane: She was mentioned as the deceased daughter of the John Wesley Rine family (History of Seneca Co, Warner-Beers & Company, 1886).

2. Alvin J 9 Rine born Mar 30 1855 in Seneca Co OH.

1880. Alvin J age 24 a farm laborer lived with his parents (Census).

1881. Jun 16th, Alvin married Mary Jane Feighner, who was born Apr 1 1865 or May 1 1865 in Crawford Co OH to J F Feighner and Louisa Fitzcharles.

1900. Census of Scipio Twp Seneca Co OH indicated: Alvin J Rine age 44, born Mar 1855, married 19 years, owns home free of debt; Mary Jane Rine age 35, wife, born Apr 1865, married 19 years, 6 children 5 alive; children Parly [Pearl] A Rine age 17, Bithery [Bertha] C Rine age 15, Olly M Rine age 14, Nory G Rine age 5, Jeramiah J W Rine age 3; Rachel Rine age 64, mother, widow; farm schedule #74 (p1538/d236/f244). The location of this household appears to be the family home built by John Wesley Rine, Alvin's father.

1901. Jul 18th, Alvin died. Buried in Albright Cemetery, in a plot beside his parents. Tombstone, which is old and hard to read, reportedly reads Alvin J Rine Mar 30 1855, Jul 18 1891: However the 1901 death date appears correct, as three children were born after 1891 and he was in the 1900 Census.

1904. Sep 8th, Mary Jane married 2nd to Adam Breitweiser, who was born Jan 1 1859. They continued to live in the Rine Family Home until sometime after the 1910 census when they moved to IN.
