    HERMAN POLLAK (1933-1998)

During the period of final edits of this Handbook, the Mssbauer scientificcommunity was saddened by the news of the decease of Professor HermanPollak. Herman was a good friend and colleague to all of us; in particular, to oneof us (JGS) for two decades. On behalf of all those who were his friend andcolleague we dedicate this Handbook to his memory.

  • Preface

This handbook contains all the bibliographic information and data collected bythe Mssbauer Effect Data Center (MEDC) on minerals. This edition representsan update of the Center's previously published handbook in 1983. Published setsof Mssbauer data have more than doubled from approximately 4,000 in the1983 edition to almost 9,000 in the current edition. The number ofbibliographical references increased from 1,200 to more than 2,600, and thenumber of different minerals investigated by Mssbauer spectroscopy hasincreased from 250 to more than 400.

The compilation of Mssbauer data on minerals, began in 1981 through acollaboration with John Stevens, from the Mssbauer Effect Data Center,Herman Pollak, who was at that time from Zaire, and Zhe Li from the ChineseAcademy of Sciences. This collaboration resulted in the 1983 publication of thefirst edition of the Handbook. Almost ten years later in 1990, work was initiatedto update this information, mostly through extensive efforts of Zhe Li. In 1995Airat Khasanov joined the Mssbauer Effect Data Center as a visiting scientistfrom Kazan State University, Kazan, Russia, and J. William Miller, a geologist atthe University of North Carolina at Asheville, joined the update effort. Theconcentrated work of these past two years has resulted finally in the completionof this handbook.

Following the publication of the Handbook, our next objective will be toundertake a comprehensive evaluation of the Mssbauer spectroscopic mineraldata. The goal is to construct a database reference set that can be used formineral identification similar to the way powder x-ray diffraction is currentlyused. The plans are to consider the evaluation for one subgroup of minerals at atime. The division of the minerals into subgroups is anticipated as follows:

    vii

  • Phyllosilicates Inosilicates Nesosilicates, Sorosilicates, and Cyclosilicates Oxides and Hydroxides Sulfides and Sulfosalts Sulfates, Phosphates, Arsenates, Vanadates, Carbonates and

    Borates

Using Mssbauer spectroscopy to investigate minerals will continue to be anactive research area for the foreseeable future. The number of publications peryear over the last twenty years has ranged from 70 to 100. Mssbauerspectroscopy will continue to develop as an analytical tool in the field ofmineralogy. We hope this handbook will assist researchers that are interested inthe Mssbauer studies of minerals.

    _________________________

For this 2002 electronic version of the Handbook, many items have beenupdated. Specifically, the Reference Listing and the Author Index have beenupdated to include references and authors that appeared in the MEDC databasethrough August 2002. Additionally, the Special Reference Listing and the DataIndices have been updated to include articles published prior to 1998 that wereadded to our database after the publication of the First Edition of the Handbook;however, these sections do not include articles published after 1998.

  • Arrangement of the Handbook

Review Reference ListingFor convenience we begin the Mssbauer Mineral Handbook with a listing of

more than 120 review articles on a variety of different subjects related tominerals. Each reference listing consists of the Mssbauer Effect Data Center'scode for a particular article, and the corresponding citation includes the title, authors, journal, volume, pages, and year. The Mssbauer Effect Data Center(MEDC) maintains files of all these publications.

Reference ListingIn this section are listed all the papers that the Mssbauer Effect Data

Center has on file related to the Mssbauer investigation of minerals. This listingincludes articles for which Mssbauer data is listed in the Data Index section ofthis Handbook and also includes those mineral papers which were notappropriate for entering into the Data Index section. There were some veryrecent references listed in this section for which the data was not abstracted.

The first two digits of the code listed for each article indicates the year ofthe publication, the third digit being the first letter of the first author's last name, and then the last three digits are a unique sequence number. Each reference hasits own unique code. These codes are useful for cross-references in thisHandbook. The Center maintains files of all these papers and copies areavailable through the Mssbauer Effect Data Center. There are more than 2,500Mssbauer publications which involve the investigations of minerals.

Special ListingsIn this section are a series of specialized bibliographical listings on several

topics of interest. These topical listings include clays, coals, lavas, moon samples, meteorites, nodules and soils.

Mineral IndexThe Mineral Index is an alphabetical listing of the various minerals that are

named in the Data Index. A series of up to four columns of codes thatcorrespond to the references in the Reference Listing follows the listing of thename of each mineral. There are more than 400 mineral species that are listed inthis Index.

    ix

  • Data IndexThe Data Index includes Mssbauer spectroscopic data on minerals that

have been investigated by five different Mssbauer isotopes (197Au, 151Eu, 57Fe,121Sb, and 119Sn). Well over 90% of the investigations utilize 57Fe. This Data Indexis arranged as follows:

Mineral - Listed under Mineral are the mineral names. As a standardsource in naming we have used The Glossary of Mineral Species, SeventhEdition (Fleischer and Mandarino, 1995).

Code - The code contains bibliographic information that can be identifiedby finding the publication in the Reference Listing section.

Chemical Formula - In most cases the chemical formula that was enteredinto our database before 1990 came from the abstracted article. If noformula was given, one from Mineralogische Tabellen by Strunz or fromthe American Society for Testing and Materials Powder Diffraction file isused in this Handbook. A collection of powder diffraction data ismaintained by the International Centre for Diffraction Data, 1601 ParkLane, Swarthmorth, Pennsylvania. In the period since 1990 (in the mostpart) entries have only been made when the chemical formula has beengiven in the publication. In many cases, the publication did not give theformula but provided analytical data on the mineral from which achemical formula was calculated.

Standard - This column contains the material relative to the isomer shiftreported. An "xx" in the table indicates that the isomer shift reference wasnot identified in the publication. Abbreviations used in this columninclude PFC (potassium ferrocyanide), SFC (sodium ferrocyanide), SNP(sodium nitropruside), and SS (stainless steel).

T (Temperature) - T indicates the temperature at which the mineral wasinvestigated. Symbols used in this column are R (room temperature), N(liquid nitrogen temperature), and H (liquid helium temperature).

Isomer Shift - The isomer shift is described in two columns. The first isthe value of the isomer shift reported in mm/s relative to the referencematerial and the second column is the uncertainty in the number as givenby the publication from which the data was obtained.

    x

  • Quadrupole - Listed here are the quadrupole splitting values in units ofmm/s. In the case for both 151Eu and 121Sb the values reported underQuadrupole are the quadrupole coupling constant in units of mm/s. As inthe case of the isomer shift column, the second column under Quadrupolecontains the uncertainty values reported by the authors.

Magnetic Field - Magnetic field values are expressed in units of kOe. Thesecond column under Magnetic Field indicates the uncertainty as reportedby the authors.

Author IndexAll authors, not only the first authors, are listed in this Index. Each of their

publications are listed by the MEDC code. The codes are further subdivided intogroups by particular Mssbauer isotopes or by other topics, such as ANL(analysis), GEN (general), IST (instrumentation), PSL (proposals), REV (reviews),and THY (theory).
