The book intittled The Story of Jade, by Herbert Whitlock arid Martin L. Ehrmann is being purchased as a memorial to Jim Gliebe.

Another book which is on its way to our library is Geode Country by John Sinotte.

TRIP

We went to Jade Cove along with about thirty-five lively and congenial people from several clubs in our Co-opo

There was not much jade to be found but we enjoyed the search while watching scuba divers bring up good size chunks off shore.

A miriad of hang gliders were a beautiful site to see and we had our potluck dinner in spite of threatening rain.

To list the names of those who helped would be a great task as over sixty persons helped during the show, plus those who helped set-up, take down, build our display case, run errands, come to our rescue when the week of the show, we needed price changes on 3,000 menus; loaned us roast~ ers, cooking pots, and pans, and did the typing and printing.

This was a real team effort and we are deeply grateful to all of you and will be looking for1-ward to working with you in the "80 show.

NEWSLETT R CAL I FOR N I A

DESERT CONSERVATION AREA

COM MIT TEE

The following Position Paper was unanimously approved by the Directors and Executive Board of the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies on November 11, 1978 at their meeting in Visalia, California: For further or more detailed information see Vern Korstad, your Federation Directors

SECTION I - The desert areas have always been a magnet for explora-· tion. There are many attractions for the hobby interests of our members: The vastness, the solitude, the sunshine the star-studded sky, the peaceful pursuit of minerals and rocks. It is a very special area for human enrichment.

SECTION II

PETROGRAPH

-POSITION PAPER QUESTIONNAIRE 1. Checkerboard land ownership: land exchanges

It is recommended that there be land exchanges to facilitate management by BLM and other agencies.

2. Utility Corridors: Allow corridors or access where needed regardless of land classification and the aquisition of land when necessaryo

J. Burros: Control burro population any way possible. 4. Access Roads and trails: (a) The access roads and

trails are very necessary for rockhound use of the desert. (b) There should also be access corridors left- through wilderness areas. There was a majority opinion that existing roads and trails should only be closed where necessary to protect the desert, and that use of common sense and a consideration of people's needs should be the governing criteria.

5. Livestock Grazing: It is the unanimous opinion that livestock grazing should be controled to protect the desert.

6. Off-road Motorized Vehicle Use: (a) 4-Wheel DriveIt lS the unanimous opinion that such vehicles should be restricted to "open" areas and existing roads and trailsn (b) Dunebuggies - It is the unanimous opinion that dune buggies be restricted to "open" areas and existing roads and trails. (c) Motorcycle Racing -The opinions expressed were very divided. Some felt that present restrictions are satisfactory. (d) Motorhomes and Campers: It is the unanimous opinion that these should be restricted to "open" areas and existing roads and trails.

7. Wilderness: A majority felt that we cannot endorse or condem the Wilderness concept in desert lands until all the restrictions are clearly stated by B.L.M. and other agencies.

8. Mining: A majority expressed no opinion. Several said mining should be controlled in Wilderness Areas Qhl;¥. Som said leave mining laws alone.

FEDERATION NEWSLETTER (Continued) California Desert Conservation A.rea Committee Position Letter

8. Mining (Continued) Comment: (a) Mining should be controlled in Wilderness Areas, but to disallow prospecting and development of "prudent investment" mineral deposits is against our Nation's best interest:::;. (b) Miners should be required to restore back to nature.

9. Protection of Native American Artifacts: It is the unanimous opinion that these should be protected with common sense restrictions, not closure of public lands.

10. Wildlife: Native Plants, Endangered Species: A majority expressed the opinion that there should be protection with common sense restrictions, not closure of public lands. A minority also felt that people should be considered before "endangered" plants and insects.

11. Energy Production: Plant Sites (Coal, Geothermal, or Nuclear) It is the unanimous opinion that plant sites be allowed only in desert areas where desert values will not be changed appreciable.

12. Protection of Historic Artifacts: It is the unanimous opinion that there should be protection with common sense restrictions, not closure of public lands.

13. Air Quality: Not really hazardous as yet!!! 14. Maintenance of Scenic Qualities: Majority opinion

for specific changes: Commercial Development - Keep Restricted Organized Campgrounds - Keep Restricted -

Place only in restricted areas. . Road Development - Keep Restricted - Recreation

roads and trails o"k. and access to Scenic Areas - Should be allowed. COMMENT: Use common sense in planning and control of the above: Services should be for young, old, and handicapped.

15. Maintenance of Desert Qualities of Peace, Quiet, Space. It is the majority opinion that activities should be restricted only where absolutely necessary to maintain the present level of these qualities.

160 Qther Desert Issue~Important to Our GrouQ: Unanimous' approval: (a) There should be a limit on the quantity of rocks and minerals collected (without a permit). (b) The use of power equipment and explo··· sives should be prohibited except on areas where "prudent investment" mining claims have been granted.

SECTION III - SUM MAR Y

A. Retention of the national resource lands for multiple use supplies the needs for the many conflicting interests.

B. Declaring an area 'wilderness'. or closure to~the extent that access is forbidden via the normal 'existing roads' will deny the many rockhounds, mineralogists, etc. the opportunity to reach some of the locations which are sources of raw materials.

FEDERATION NEWSLETTER (Continued) California Desert Conservation Area Committee Position Letter

SECTION III - SUM MAR Y (Continued) C. There are no alternate places in the desert where

our rockhound hobby can survive. We are totally dependent on the earth's bounty wherever we find it.

D. No hobby has more attracted juniors who continue on in the scientific world greatly enriched by their experiences in the basic study of 'rocks'. No other hobby has more attracted so many of the older citizens and resulted in creative, educational, and therapeutic compensation far beyond expectations. No other hobby has drawn more whole family units together to camp, hunt, hike, and pursue some constructive phase of 'rock' related activity, nor has served more the public by sharing - with shows, exhibits, lectures, and donations, nor has brought together such a great variety of socio-economic backgrounds-all sharing in the great love for the earth and nature.

SECTION IV -A. The needs of our group's activities are somewhat

similar to the needs of the mlnlng interests, such as: Sources of raw materials are always discovered by search, luck, or scientific methods of research.

B. We feel that our hobby overlaps with recreational, educational and scientific resea~ch. Therefore, we do not feel that there is adverse impact, but instead a very definite interrelationship.

C •. We have been concerned with the problems of litter, indiscriminate off-road vehicle activity, destruction of the desert plants, animal life and habitat, and desecration of historical and/or archaeological treasurers. Complete closure is not the answer"

D. Access by road to or near our hobby areas is the most important criteria if we are to continue to enjoy the desert and our hobby interests are to survive. SECTION V - The government has already begun the educathnal process with its Way Stations. The BLM experimental school programs should be continued and expanded. Education is necessary to reach the many desert users who are not enlightened to the needs thru an organization. Do's and dongts' of desert use should be part of each package given to license applicants, park users, and national forest users. All agencies should work together with clubs and organizations so all individuals can do all they can. Perhaps direction and suggestions are neededo This is the purpose of relaying this information in club bulletins and at our meetings.

B. A statement of our position was sent with a more detailed statement of this position paper to the BLM.

C. Law enforcement should be a well-defined and emphasi~ ized part of desert planning. "Only one 'bad apple' spoils the whole. Doc Where it is proven that 'resource protection' is absolutely necessary and that human interference has caused an adverse

BIRTHSTONE - Bloodstone Alternate- Aquamarine

FLOWER-Jonquil or Daffodil

March takes its name from the Roman month "Martius", first month of the early Roman calendar. This was in honor of the Roman god, Mars, god of war.

The Bloodstone, sometimes call-I ed "St. Stephens stone", also'

called jasper by the ancients. Legend named the bloodstone from the old belief that it could stop bleeding. It was also believed to have been the stone that lay under the cross at Calvary and was stained by Christ's blood.

Early Babylonians and Egyptians used the stone as an amulet. The residents of New Spain cut them in hearts to guard against heart disease.

Wearing of the stone brought courage, wisdom and popularity; could heal inflamatory illnesses; stop anger and discord; make water boil; and cause bleeding by a single touch.

February 19 through March 20 is governed by the twelfth sign Pisces and the planet Neptune.

NEW S - NEW S - NEW S --

RICK ASHLEY, son of Billie and Allen Ashley of our club, celebrated the '79' show by getting married on March 3rd to Sheila Dude of Hayward. Congratulations the the couple and best wishes from all of us. REMEMBER Bill and Elnora Niebel, (Bill was that excellent photographer for our "big" 1978 show~ We received a note from them saying they are in one of the most mineralized areas of Utah, and are out in the mountains and desert a lot during the summer.

After his neck accident and a problem operation, he advises us that in November he was in the hospital and it looks as if the problem is better.--Both have our warmest wishes for the best of everything and enjoyed hearing from them. If yo~are in the Panguitch Area of Utah and want to know about Good Cutting Material call Bill Niebel, 676-8864.

Our own Debbie Gilmore, Fred and Marge Miller's grandaughter, has just been made a DEPUTY SHERIFF and is working at Sanita Rita -- dangerous job!!!!

Nice to see Viola Cutter at our show--dressed in red and visiting with everyone.

WE CERTAINLY DO HAVE A LOT OF MEMBER DEALERS!! !!! !!!

Mr. Shreffler kept us at our task from morn to night, for

~ ~ j

~ nine hours each day, and never let up. This was a gruelling : experience, but an enjoyable one. i We all agreed that it was great; \ that we learned a great deal - ~ about soldering, working with ~ silver, and design. ~

This is an excellent class ! for the real craftsman. There ~ athre more tric~s to the trade, \~

an one reallzes, and Jim knows \ them and told us. Each of us was r to make a Road Runner - (see de- I sign above) and each of us did. I Jim says that this bird is the ! most intricate of any channel ; jewelry, and in completing this ! project, you can do almost any- J thing else. ~

All of us did complete the ~ "bird"; but some weren't so-o-o- i o healthy looking. Soooo, back I to the drawing board; we decided 1 to get together again to re-exam- ~ ine our procedures. ~

Chairman - Allen

~ Ashley!!!!

" \ "" Our Show is done for ~ another year and, as usua~, w~~ many compliments on the ~ smooth efficiency with which ~ it was accomplished. Security, one small, but very essential show responsibility, was no exception.

Due to my large number of Will-! ing volunteers, only two members I were required to patrol more than ! one - 2-hour shift. Naturally, I this left them plenty of time to • volunteer for other show assign- Ii ments, and most of them did.

I remained in the show building the entire weekend, from Friday afternoon through Sunday, with the exception of about five hours I Saturday evenng when it was nec- ' essary.to attend the wedding and receptlon of our oldest son, Rick Ashley, a former member, to Sheila Dude. Jim Bishop graciously vol- I unteered to assume my responsibili- ' ties during that period.

My special thanks to Junior members, Kurt Marquart and Ken Boynton, who spent both Friday and Saturday nights at the show. They entertained me with a wide variety of current "pop" music tapes and quickly became adapt at the card game "Hearts", which we played until the wee hours of morning. Boy, it took a long time to wear them down and convience them that we ought to get at least a couple of hours sleep.
