THINK a minute.What’s your problem?

You know that not all prob-lems are bad? In fact, having problems sometimes means you’re making progress.

A big hardware busi-ness moved into the same building with another, small hardware store.

The big hardware com-petitor posted signs all over the building that read: “Grand Opening.”

So not to be beat, the owner of the small hardware business posted a big sign over his store that read: “Main Entrance.”

It’s successful people who know that their big-gest obstacles often become their biggest opportunities.

As one smart man said: “The same big stone that’s

Problems mean progress

an obstacle to a weak person is a steppingstone to success for a stronger person.” The difference is in their attitude and response.

Remember, you are not the only person with prob-lems. Even the lion has to fight off flies!

So “Don’t be afraid to face the music just because you don’t like the tune.”

Many years ago, Ameri-can farmers carried their

potatoes in wagons to the market.

As their wagons bounced along on the rough, bumpy roads, the big potatoes were always the ones that ended up on top.

And it’s usually the same with people. It’s the people with bigger hearts of faith and perseverance who end up on top, after getting over their life’s bumps and problems.

There’s a saying: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

Yes, problems may de-tour you and take you off course for a little while, but only you can choose to stop moving ahead.

Sometimes we think that our temporary problems are permanent.

But if you stay patient and positive, then the end of your problem will become the beginning of your new season of success.

So why not ask Jesus Christ to take charge of your heart every day.

It’s only with Him on your side, and His peace and power in your life, that you can turn every problem into progress.

Just Think a Minute.

Hope of the sick and afflicted in M’naoLIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… And the second (greatest commandment) is like (the first): ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’…” (Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, in Matthew 22:39, the Holy Bible).

-ooo-A HOPE FOR THE SICK

AND THE AFFLICTED IN MINDANAO: Citizens of Davao City and of the entire Southern Philippines who are sick and aff licted with diseases have a reason to hope in combating and ultimately overcoming and finding healing for their ill-nesses, even if they do not have any money to pay for their medical and related expenses.

The reason? There is a government hospital in their midst, named Southern Philippines Medical Center, which boasts not only of first class and world-competitive facilities at its present loca-tion at J.P. Laurel Avenue, Davao City but, more impor-tantly, of top-caliber officials

and administrators whose compassion and competence to serve are beyond ques-tion, and who are enjoying the support---financial and otherwise---of local govern-ment units and lawmakers from the different regions in Mindanao.

Dr. Arthur V. Platon and I visited the Center, formerly named Davao Medical Cen-ter, last June 22, 2012 and, through the courtesy of Dr. Leopoldo J. Vega, its chief, and Dr. Maria Elinore A. Concha, its chief training officer, we were given a whirl-wind tour of its facilities. What we saw proved beyond doubt that an explosion of

miraculous healings has been happening and will continue to happen at the hospital, to the benefit of our people from Mindanao.

-ooo-GOV’T HOSPITAL LIKE

A PRIVATE HOSPITAL: The f irst thing I noticed when we arrived at the hos-pital grounds was the spic and span condition of the buildings housing the dif-ferent units of the hospital. The buildings sported savvy looks, as if they were recently spruced up, and were clean and orderly everywhere de-spite the huge volume of patients and other people coming in and going out,

giving the impression that it was an expensive private hospital we were going into, and not a government medi-cal center.

Next, I saw some of the units of the Center: its renal center which was full-packed with people undergoing di-alysis treatment; its wards overf lowing with patients (the Center has a 600 bed capacity but it is at present serving about 1,200 beds of patients); its Mindanao Heart Center which caters to heart ailments and problems; and its three “half-way houses”.

“Half-way houses”? Yes, and these are semi-apartment buildings inside the Center compound, with individual rooms which are literally lent, for free, to relatives of patients who come from far-away provinces of Mindanao so they do not need to rent out apartments or stay in hotels or loiter around while keeping watch over their sick kin. One such half-way house

THERES is a Chinese prov-erb that says: too much of anything is not good. In the case of the Palawan Underground River, which recently earned a place on the prestigious “The New 7 Wonders of Nature,” it’s too much passengers and too little “organization.”

One of our hardwork-ing officials at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, As-sistant Governor Winnie Santiago, learned this the hard way during a recent family vacation. AG Winnie sent us an e-mail (with ac-companying photos) while waiting for their river tour to start: “(The Underground River permit) said 3:30 p.m. sharp. Guess what time it is now and we are still waiting for our turn.”

She sent another e-mail

Of vacations and deposits

detailing the rest of her family’s Underground River “horror” story:

“It didn’t end (with the waiting). We finished the underground river tour at past 6 p.m. Our assigned boat should have been ready and waiting but unfortu-nately, it had to ferry other passengers. We were last on the island, seven of us, plus our tour guide and one of the boatmen. The boat came back for us at past 7 p.m. It was totally dark by

then, with no electricity by the shore. My 82-year-old mother quietly prayed.”

She added, “If you can somehow share (this story) with someone who can improve the way the underground river tour is organized, it will help the Philippines a lot.”

I agree with AG Winnie. A world-class wonder of nature certainly deserves world-class facilities and services.

Some depositors of the recently closed Export & Industry Bank have been lamenting the loss of their money—and rightly so, since they worked hard to earn what they have tried to save.

In light of this sad de-velopment, Bangko Sentral Deputy Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. gave some ad-vice on how depositors can ensure that their deposits would remain safe in banks.

First, Espenilla said de-positors should try to spread their deposits in several banks, instead of putting all of their money in just one bank.

Espenilla added that de-positors should not be easily tempted by high interest rates offered by

-ooo-SECRET OF A VIBRANT

AND WORLD-CLASS CEN-TER: I asked Dr. Vega the “secret” to transforming a once-sleepy government hospital into a vibrant and world-class medical center. His reply: it is a collaborative eff ort by the Center’s offi cials and employees who all desire to give the best medical service

to their constituents, and by generous local offi cials and congressmen from Davao City and from the Davao Provinces and other areas.

Dr. Vega was quick to point out too that he was lucky to have the support of top Depart-ment of Health (DOH) offi cials now led by Secretary Enrique

Ona who has encouraged the private-public-partnership the Center has managed to forge with local offi cials, even if virtually no DOH funds have been made available to the upgraded facilities.

My visit confi rmed to me certain undeniable truths: as shown by Dr. Vega, a govern-

ment offi cial who wants to serve well need not be con-stricted by the limitations of his offi ce, for he can be creative and resourceful. With an objective to help the less fortunate of our countrymen, Dr. Vega can only be enjoy-ing the support of God, the Almighty, and of his superiors

at the DOH and, likewise important, of his staff and employees like Dr. Concha. Mabuhay!!!

some banks. It is best to deposit in a bank of-fer ing rates genera l ly comparable with those of other banks.

The BSP official also said that depositors should check if their chosen bank is transparent about its financial condition.

Here are simple and practical reminders from the BSP on how to safe-guard your deposits:

* Only banks are al-lowed by law to accept deposits from the pub-lic. If in doubt, you may inquire from the BSP’s Financial Consumer Af-fairs Group (telephone number 02-7087087; e-mail consumeraffairs@

bsp.gov.ph) or the Deposi-tors Assistance Bureau of the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (telephone number 02-8414630 to 31; e-mai l [email protected]).

* Deal directly with bank employees within the premises of the bank.

* The rate of interest paid by banks to depos-its and other terms and

conditions vary among banks. The higher the rates, the higher the risk.

* Offers that sound too good to be true may not be true at all.

* Be wary of offers of unrealistically high in-terest rates or expensive gifts (such as cars, local or foreign trips, gadgets, etc.) in addition to inter-est, in exchange for your

deposit.* Always keep in a safe

place the proof of your deposits such as pass-books, copies of deposit slips, certificates of time deposit or confirmation statements (if transac-tions is done through the Internet).

* Bank deposits are insured up to P500,000 per individual depositor

by the PDIC.It should be noted that

despite the Export & In-dustry Bank experience, Espenilla has assured the Filipino public that the entire banking industry remains stable.

the region to rise by al-most nine percent, from 92,900 to 100,970 metric tons.

Clarete said the same trend was also observed in the production of green nut which posted an increase of 20 percent, from 480,867 to 577,478 metric tons. Al-though, Lanao del Norte recorded lower output, the increases in the rest of the provinces pulled up the total green nut production, he added.

Meanwhile, a downward trend in palay production was noted during the first quar-ter of the year in Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, and the two Misamis provinces pulling down the region’s perfor-mance by one percent and causing regional average palay yield to decrease by 0.25 percent.

The decrease in produc-tion according to Clarete was due to some changes in the harvesting and plant-ing period. In some areas, the harvest time was moved towards the second quarter due to delayed in planting, while some areas moved the planting period from the fourth quarter in 2011 to first quarter this year, he explained, adding that tropical storm Sendong also destroyed about 100 hectares of palay crops which should be harvested in January.

He said the two Misamis provinces recorded negative outputs as a result of the shifting of some upland ar-eas to cash crop, while some areas were not planted due to damaged irrigation canals.

Clarete further said the decreases in the average palay yield were caused by lesser usage of certified seeds, while drop in yield in irrigated areas was experienced due to heavy rains during reproduc-tive stage.

Similarly, corn production in the region went down by more than one percent dur-ing the first quarter to only 329,332 metric tons. Declines were more pronounced in Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon for white corn as a result of lesser usage of modern OPV seeds as well as damaged corn areas caused by tropical storm Sendong.

However, yellow corn production in these prov-inces recorded double digit increases. (APB/PIA-10)

ZAMBOANGA City––Tens of millions of pesos went up in smoke aft er a huge fi re broke out in downtown Jolo, the capital town of Sulu province, authorities said Friday.

It said the fi re was put out at dawn almost four hours of inferno that destroyed one of Jolo’s biggest shopping center. Th ere were no reports of casualties, although fi re fighters continued to sift through debris in the town’s business center.

Th e Bureau of Fire Protec-

tion said it is investigating the cause of the fi re, but said the damage could reach up to P50 million.

Th e building that once housed tens of dozens of stalls and small restaurants and a textile center was a favorite destination of shoppers and bargain hunters in Sulu, one of fi ve provinces under the Autonomous Region in Mus-lim Mindanao. (Mindanao Examiner)

ZAMBOANGA City––Se-curity forces here captured a former Muslim rebel com-mander and now sub-leader of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf group tagged as behind the kidnappings of dozens of students and teachers in Basilan province more than a decade ago, officials said Friday.

Sayyaf sub-leader captured in Zamboanga CityOfficials said Alawi Pa-

sihul, who is also senior member of the Moro Na-tional Liberation Front, was tracked down at a restaurant in Zamboanga City. Pasihul is being linked by authori-ties to the mass kidnappings that occurred in 2000 after militants stormed the Claret School in Lamitan City.

It was not immediately known whether Pasihul, who escaped military and police operation in Basilan, just several nautical miles south of Zamboanga City, was planning to kidnap or mount new attacks against civilian or government tar-gets.

Col. Buenaventura Pas-cual, commander of an army anti-terrorism task force, said Pasihul is facing a string of criminal charges in his hometown in Basilan, one of five provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.

“He was also involved in rebellion in Zamboanga City in 2002 where their group took innocent civilians

hostage. Pasihul was a fol-lower of Abu Sayyaf founder Abdurajak Janjalani. He is now being interrogated by authorities,” Pascual said.

Pascual did not say if there were weapons seized from Pasihul or if he was alone when arrested in downtown Zamboanga on Thursday afternoon.

The Abu Sayyaf is the most notorious among the Philippine rebel groups and has been linked to al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiya. The group is also holding several foreigners, among them a Japanese treasure hunter, an Australian adventurer and two Chinese ore trad-ers. (Mindanao Examiner)

MIA DUMPED OKC, 121-106, to win the 2012 NBA championship capping off series 4-1 in Game 5 series final amid a hysteric crowd at the packed American Airline Arena Thursday.

Miamis’s Big Three Leb-ron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh scored a total of 70 points as M. Miller made an additional 23 points.

James had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists, and got the kind of help that was worth leaving home for, leading the Heat in a 121-106 rout of the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night to win the NBA Finals in five games.

“It means everything,” James said moments after the win. “I made a difficult decision to leave Cleveland but I understood what my future was about ... I knew we had a bright future (in Miami). This is a dream come true for me. This is definitely when it pays off.”

Wade skipped to each side of the court before the opening tip with arms up to pump up the fans, then James showed them nothing wrong with his legs, throwing down an emphatic fast-break dunk to open the scoring.

Heat is NBA champ! He made consecutive

baskets while being fouled, showing no expression after the second, as if he’d hardly even known he was hit. Drawing so much atten-tion from the Thunder, he started finding his wide-open shooters, and the Heat built a nine-point lead be-fore going to the second up 31-26.

Oklahoma City got back within five early in the third before consecutive 3-point-ers by Chalmers and Battier triggered a 27-7 burst that made it 88-63 on another 3-pointer by Miller. James didn’t even score in the run until it was almost over, hitting a pair of free throws after he was flagrantly fouled by Derek Fisher while pow-ering toward the basket.

James hopped up and down in the final minutes, shared a long hug with op-ponent Kevin Durant, and watched the confetti rain down from the rafters.

The Heat took control in the second quarter, briefly lost it and blew it open again in the third behind their role players, James content to pass to wide-open 3-point shooters while the Thunder focused all their attention on him.

Bosh and Wade, the other members of the Big Three who sat alongside James as he promised titles at his Miami welcoming party two summers ago, both had strong games. Bosh, who broke down in tears as the Heat left their own court after losing Game

6 last year, finished with 24 points and Wade scored 20. The Heat also got a huge boost from Mike Miller, who made seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points.

Miller made his fourth 3-pointer of the half right before James’ fast-break basket capped a 15-2 run that extended Miami’s lead

to 53-36 with 4:42 remaining in the first half. James had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists at halftime, with the Heat ahead 59-49.

Durant added 11 re-bounds for the Thunder, who made a remarkably early trip to the NBA Finals just three years after starting 3-29. With Durant, Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka and James Harden all 23 or younger, the Thunder have the pieces in place for a lengthy stay atop the Western Conference.

But their inexperience showed in this series, a few questionable decisions, possessions and outright mistakes costing them in their franchise’s first playoff appearance since Seattle lost to Chicago in 1996. Westbrook scored 19 but shot only 4 of 20, unable to come up with anything close to his 43-point outing in Game 4, and Harden finished a miserable series with 19.

Miami became the third team to sweep the middle three games at home in the 2-3-2 format. The Detroit Pistons took all three from the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004 before the Heat did it against Dallas in 2006.

Coach Erik Spoelstra tied Riley for the Heat franchise record with his 34th post-season win. He is 34-22, while Riley was just 34-36.

The four-game losing streak that Oklahoma City finished the season with was its longest of the season. The Thunder had dropped three straight games to Memphis, Miami and Indiana from April 2-6. WITH WIRE REPORTS
