    MOST OF THE NEW puzzle books that seem to be proliferating rapidly these days

    consist mainly of old chestnuts refurbished with different story lines.Terry

    Stickels's book, whi ch you now hold, is no t of this sort . W i t h f ew exceptions, the

    problems he gives are his ownproblems not to be found in other collections.

    A second meri t of this bo ok is that its puzzles avoid t w o extremes: they are

    neither so difficult that general readersones with no knowledge of advanced

    mathwill be unable to solve them, nor so simple that their solutions are obvi-

    ous.To enjoy this collection all you need to know is basic arithmetic.

    A thi rd me rit is tha t interspersed amon g th e mathematical teasers are wo rd

    puzzles of a type that has been called a "w or dl e" a co mm on phrase symbolized

    by an unusual way of printing words.They are fun to solve, and even more fun

    to invent.

    Th e greatest pleasure to be deri ved f rom a col lection such as this is to use

    your will power to refrain from turning too quickly to the answers.Try your best

    to solve each puzzle before you peek at its solution.

    Allow me to close with a little novelty of my own. Printed below is a word

    expressing my reaction to this book. It is written in a curious code.To decipher it,

    hold this page upside down in front of a mirror

    7 7 . x,y,andz= 8, 12, and 60 pounds, respectively.

    Starting with the 8 ft. section,

    8 ft. - 10 lbs. = 80 ft.-lbs.

    To balance, the bottom left part of the mobile must

    also equal 80 ft.-lbs., so its total weight must be 20 lbs.

    (4 ft.20 lbs. = 80 ft.-lbs.) Therefore,x+y = 20

    and

    6x = 4ji

    So,

    y =20 -x

    and substituting,

    6x = 4 (20 -x)

    6x = 80 - 4x

    IOx = 80

    x = 8and therefore,y = 12

    Adding the total weights of the left side, we have

    12 0+ 10 + 8 + 12 = 150 lbs.

    150 lbs. 4 ft. = 600 ft.-lbs.

    Therefore, the right side must also be 600 ft.-lbs.:

    first four equations to come up with the following:

    (1) 2 + B = H

    (2) H + P = T

    (3) T + 2 = F

    (4) B + P + F = 30

    Now substitute equation (I) into equation (2):

    (2+ B) +P = J

    Rearranging, we get

    B + P = T - 2

    Substitute this into equation (4):

    (T - 2) + F = 30

    Finally, substitute equation (3) into equation (4) and

    solve forT:

    (T - 2) + (T + 2) = 30

    2T = 30

    T = 15
