. "Nineteen of the world's best architects create the hotel of thefuture in Madrid" according to the hotel's own website. Aspresident of the Silken Hotel Group (a business venture by thecompanies Escampa and the Hotel Group Urvasco S.A) explained:“the Hotel Puerta America is a dream come true. A project whereacclaimed architects and designers have conveyed their dreamsto us. It is a homage to the world of architecture, design and tothe freedom”. Each of the hotel's 12 floors bears the imprint of adifferent design talent. Each floor measures 1300 m2 and the onlyconstraint was that each had to contain 28 rooms and two juniorsuites. The external structure was developed by SGA Studio andis a fairly standard rectangular tower block. John Pawson did thecommon areas, while Jean Nouvel designed the cladding on thefacade and the 12th floor with 12 luxurious suites (as anexception on the 28-room-rule). . This is a series of sustainable public spaces, a meeting point forthose who live in the area of Vallecas, a suburb of Madrid. It is ona 500 x 50 m road, a pilot experience for the climatic adaptationof outdoor spaces, awarded in 2004 at the Eco-Boulevardcompetition organized by the Residential Innovation managementoffice within the Municipal Housing Corporation of Madrid andfunded by the European Union (LIFE programme). The tree of airis a light structure that is self-sufficient and can be dismantled. It consumes only what it can produce through photovoltaic solarenergy collection systems. Selling this energy to the powernetwork generates a superavit on the annual balance sheet andthis is reinvested in the maintenance of the structure. “ThreePavilions, or air-trees, work as supports, open to multipleactivities chosen by the users. Installed in the non-city astemporary prostheses, they will be used only until the inactivityand climatic adaptation problem is corrected.”

. This is a monumental tribute to the victims of the terroristattacks on March 11th, 2004. It consists out of 2 parts, intimatelyrelated: the glass cupola and the room underneath it. From thisroom, visitors can watch the inside of the cupola, wheremessages are visible, printed on the glass. These messages werewritten in the successive days after the bombing. The 11 m highglass cupola is formed by 2 different layers: transparentcolourless glass blocks and an ETFE membrane. The blocks areglued together with acrylic glue that hardens when exposed toultraviolet light. The glue is still transparent, but the ETFE foilcontains a 97% transparency, subject to change, according to thepressure within the room. The messages will be seen through theglass skin during the day, and appear different during the night. The room is accessed directly from the main lobby of the stationof Atocha. The blue coloured space is like “an empty space, insilence, with the light as a protagonist”.

. Foreign Office Architects gave bamboo a leading role in theirlatest housing scheme in Spain. There were two main reasons fordoing so: it's eco-friendly and it's comfortingly cosy. Bamboolouvres mounted on folding frames cover the façades of thebuilding in Madrid's Carabanchel public housing development inthe city's southern suburbs. The basic parallelogram blockcontains units of different shapes and sizes which, thanks to theirtube-like interior, all have a dual east-west orientation as well asaccess to a private garden on the eastern side. The louvres notonly provide the necessary protection from the blazing summersun, but also enhance security and, because they are completelyunder the control of each unit's occupants, they also highlight thelatter's spatial independence.

. This is a renovated square in the historical centre. A largecentral space, a perfect setting for urban life; a multi functional, indeterminate and free. Steps accommodate and applygeometrical order to the trees and architectural elements such asramps, stairs and ventilation towers, made out of naturally rustedcorten steel, either punched or stamped with a floral motif. Inthe lowest point of the square a water fountain that doubles as agame for children provides a refreshing counter point and at theother end in the highest point of the square, a child’s play areawas placed close to an area where seniors can exercise in theshade. The vegetation was doubled, large chestnut trees greatlychanged the overall appearance. New lighting was installed thatprovided a higher level of illumination under the arcades makingthem safer at night and more adequate for all kinds of activities.Granite paving with different contrasted colours allows for aclear lecture of the topography.

. As opposed to the great operations of the periphery, werecovered the scale and the density of the historical center. Howmany vestibules you cross in 10 minutes walking by the PAU ofEnsanche de Vallecas, as opposed to which you cross in the sametime in the historical center of Madrid?. Perhaps 5 as opposed to50. A block, halfway between the periphery and the historicalcity. We are interested on the fragmentation and thecompactness, two terms in principle opposed but compatible. Acompact project formed by different fragments: a closed blockthat is diluted in small towers. A project that is looking for itsposition as it changes of level, the fragmentation of the groundfloor, to the compactness of the plants first and second, dissolving in independent pieces in the superior plants. Weengage in a dialog between two systems, the group and theindividual thing. Between the collective and massive system ofthe first plants, and the towers: almost single houses.

Puerta de Europa.

. These two office towers flank the Paseo de la Castellana,Madrid's most important boulevard. The location of a subwayinterchange made the placement of the two towers near thestreet impossible. Their bold design is in part a response to theneed for the footprints of the towers to be set back from theinterchange while at the same time bringing the towers togetheras a single compositional whole. The towers lean towards eachother and over the plazas, ensuring their visibility from up anddown the Paseo and creating a portal which, being at theNorthern end of the business district of Madrid, has been called ametaphorical gateway to Europe. The façade of each tower is acomposition of a major grid -clad in stainless steel conforming totheir structure-, a minor grid of red mullions, and a third gridcomprising the light grey mullions of the curtain wall (text fromwebsite architect).

Villaverde Social Housing.

AddressCalle del Berrocal 28021 MadridSpain

. This project is located in a new development area in theVillaverde district of southern Madrid. Comprised of 176 one-,two-, and three-bedroom apartments, it responds to an overallmasterplan for the site which requested a single U-shaped blockof eight storeys high and which has the appearance of a pitchedroof. Within the confines of this brief, the design attempted tomanipulate these architectural restrictions so as to abstract thenormative idea of an apartment block. So whereas otherneighbouring buildings adopt a symmetrical, double-pitchedsilhouette, here the traditional relationships of wall and roof areabstracted into a low, single pitch for the bulk of the block, and asmall secondary pitch at the building´s front edge. The materialschosen are earthy-pink concrete for the façade panels andslate-blue concrete for the courtyard portico. A dense band oflandscaping is located in between, to reach the effect of a richpanel of colours radiating outwards.

. This scheme for 102 units by Dosmasuno Architects, has twodistinct sides. It comprises of two blocks (forming an 'L-shape'),occupying two sides of a rectangular site on the Avenida de laPeseta, following two of the site's boundaries. The southern blockis the shortest. On the outer face, the elevations are formed bywhite polyester coated panels of expanded metal, spanningvertically from floor to ceiling. Some panels are fixed, whilstothers slide to one side or the other. Thus the occupiers of theapartments are capable of creating random variations in theelevation. On the inner face of the scheme, large boxes arecantilevered off the sides of the elevation to provideaccommodation beyond the building line. These spaces arearranged in an apparently casual, un-ordered fashion. Whilst theaccommodation hugs the sides of the site, virtually the whole ofthe ground floor is given over to parking. However this has beenroofed over to provide a useful amenity for the occupants.

This curious façade is called'Diafragma Decafónico de Dígitos' and is an artwork by sculptorPepe Cruz Novillo. It is a transcription system that transforms colours into numbers (0-9). The equivalents for the colours andnumbers are: 1 Red, 2 Orange, 3 Green, 4 Rose, 5 Yellow, 6 DarkGreen, 7 Violet, 8 Blue, 9 Light Blue and 0 Brown.
