The NFL at 100:"The Rise of Blackness!"
I was in Buckeye countrywith my wife, Clarene (whowas born in Ohio) to helpsell copies of her self-pub-lished book, "Shine Onlinewith LinkedIn" at an AfricanAmerican book fair innearby Akron.I'm sure you've heard of it
(my wife's book)! If you'dlike a copy, visit Clarene'sLinkedIn page to find outmore about it and whereyou can order a copy. Iguarantee, you will find thebook an engaging and in-formative read you will referto over and over when
doing anything LinkedIn-re-lated!Okay, back to my HOF
visit! As a way to say "thankyou" for coming with her toAkron (we drove) and help-ing her at the book fair, sheencouraged me to visit the"Cradle of ProfessionalFootball" in the city wherethe NFL was born. All I can say about the
Pro Football Hall of Fame is"WOW!" The place lives upto the hype it so richly de-serves! I would definitely goback multiple times! It's thatgood! The HOF is first and
foremost a museum withquality exhibits that totallyimmerse you in the game. The HOF motto is: "Honorthe Heroes of the Game,Preserve its History, Pro-mote its Values, CelebrateExcellence Everywhere."This is especially true of
the Hall's primary exhibit,"The NFL's First Century." Atwo-story, circular exhibitionhall contains the history ofthe pro game from its birthand infancy, to its maturitytoday, its impact on Ameri-can culture; with references
With the NFL (National Football League) cele-brating its 100th anniversary during the recentlycompleted 2019 season, and with the playoffsstarting Saturday, January 4, 2020, I thought itwould be an appropriate time to share my impres-sions of my visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame(HOF) in Canton, OH this past October.

to significant moments inAmerican and world historythat impacted and influ-enced the League, not tomention the NFL's impacton the culture. The exhibit does a great
job of focusing on the Blackexperience in pro football, starting with the legendaryFritz Pollard (also an HOFenshrinee), who was notonly one of the first earlyBlack players in the NFL'sinfant years (he and BobbyMarshall, who played forthe Rock Island Independ-ents were the initial pio-neers), but Fritz was alsothe FIRST African Americancoach in the league whenhe became a player-coachwith the Akron Pros in1921. (Note: Former player and
head coach Art Shell of theOakland Raiders is consid-ered the FIRST Black headcoach in the Modern Era, aperiod from 1946 to today.)Pollard was also part of the
1920 Akron Pros champi-onship team, the NFL'sfirst!During the League's first
14 seasons, there wereonly 13 African Americanplayers who trodded the pro"gridiron" (as football fieldswere called back in the daybecause they were markedwith regularly spaced paral-lel lines).Pollard was also the
FIRST African American toplay quarterback in theNFL. He played for --andsometimes coached--fourdifferent teams during hisNFL career. Pollard's career (and the
careers of other Black foot-ball pioneers of that erasuch as Joe Lillard of theChicago Cardinals, andRay Kemp of the PittsburghPirates--now Steelers) wascut short. All three were thelast Black players to play inthe NFL before the enact-ment of pro football's 12-year "color barrier."That odious barrier was
"championed" by WilliamPreston Marshall, a son ofthe South (West Virginia),and the owner of the Wash-ington Redskins. Among his many "contri-
butions" to pro football--therules of the pro game, twodivision format and a cham-pionship game to name afew--Marshall persuadedthe fledgling league to banBlack players from playingpro football.Marshall "was identified
as the leading racist in theNFL," according to profes-sor Charles Ross in his1999 book, "Outside theLines: African Americansand the Integration of theNational Football League."Aside from his own racist
views, Marshall reportedlyrefused to sign AfricanAmerican players becauseof his desire to appeal tothe Southern markets. Untilthe Dallas Cowboys en-tered the league in 1960,the Redskins were thesouthernmost team in theNFL.Marshall's wife at the
time, silent film actressCorinne Griffith Marshall(no relation to D.W. Griffith, the director of "Birth of aNation"--according toWikipedia) wrote the lyricsto the team fight song, "Hailto the Redskins."At one time, the song
contained the lyrics "fightfor old Dixie." Fortunately, someone in--most likelyoutside--the organization
"suggested" they changethat line (among a few oth-ers) to: "fight for old D.C."That wise move sparedMarshall and the footballfranchise embarrassment. The team's very name haslong been considered politi-cally incorrect and an insultto America's indigenouspeople.Oh, did I forget to mention
the Redskins didn't draft ortrade for Black players untilthe early 1960s?No?...Well, I just did! In1962, Marshall was told bythe U.S. Department of In-terior and the then U.S. At-torney General Robert F.Kennedy to sign a Blackplayer or have his 30-yearlease to play in D.C. Sta-dium (now Robert F.Kennedy Memorial Sta-dium), which was paid forwith government moneyand owned by Washingtoncity government, revoked.Marshall relented (finally)
and was planning to draftrunning back Ernie Davis ofSyracuse, who was--ironi-cally--the first African Amer-ican to win the HeismanTrophy (in 1961). But Davisbalked at being drafted bythe Redskins and de-manded a trade, saying: "Iwon't play for that S.O.B."Davis got his wish and
was traded to the ClevelandBrowns for All-Pro BobbyMitchell, who became thefirst Black Redskins player.A star running back andlater wide receiver, Mitchell(no relation to this story'sauthor--I think) was in-ducted into the HOF in1983.Here's some historic irony
for you: Quarterback DougWilliams was the first Blackquarterback to start and wina Super Bowl (he was alsothe game's Most ValuablePlayer)! He accomplishedthis historic feat as a mem-ber of (drum rollplease)...The WashingtonRedskins! Now THAT'skarma folks! The "color barrier" started
to come down, brick bybrick, in 1946 when theNFL's Los Angeles Ramsand the AAFC's ClevelandBrowns each signed twoBlack players: former UCLAstars Kenny Washingtonand Woody Strode (Rams),and Marion Motley and mid-dle guard Bill Willis(Browns). The signings marked the
beginning of the end ofracial discrimination in pro

football.In the 1960s, the emer-
gence of the AmericanFootball League (AFL), withits wide-open style of offen-sive football, contributedgreatly to the advancementof Black players. Hungry for new players,
the AFL began to recruitfrom historical Black col-leges and universities andsigned many Black playersthat were either overlookedin the draft or uninvited totryout for teams in the es-tablished NFL.By the 1970s, Black play-
ers comprised over 30 per-cent of the NFL's laborforce. Progress continuedthrough the 1980's and 90'sand by 2002, 70 percent of
the NFL's players wereAfrican American. There were a number of
factors for their meteoricrise: the growth of theLeague, successes in thecivil rights movement, andexternal pressure from gov-ernment, community andgrass roots organizations. The 100th anniversary ex-
hibit was not only a treas-ure trove of football history,it was also a valuable troveof Black history, period! There are a number of non-NFL historical facts on dis-play in the exhibit thatparallel the rise of Black-ness in the League. And, believe it or not, the
HOF has a section devotedentirely to Black collegefootball and the NFL stars
who played for HBCU'ssuch as former Green BayPackers great (and HOFenshrinee) Willie Davis, who played for anotherBlack football legend atGrambling State University,Coach Eddie Robinson. If you're Black, a football
fan, and love the NFL andBlack history, I recommendvisiting "The Hall" (espe-
cially during January--Dr.Martin Luther King's birth-day month--and February--Black History Month) andseeing for yourself the glori-ous history of pro footballand learn about the men(especially the men ofcolor) who helped lay thefoundation for the Leagueand built upon it a sportsmecca of cultural and com-
mercial influence and im-port.--Sources: Information for
