This is great exercise, and it is good for the environment. At this time of year, more boys and girls will also be riding their bikes to school. This would be a good time to review the bicycle safety rules with your children. First, only those students who have passed the safety test with Mr. V (administered in second grade) may ride their bicycles/scooters to school unaccompanied by an adult. Students who have not yet taken the safety test may ride their bikes/scooters to school if accompanied by an adult. Additionally, the law requires that helmets be worn. Finally, bicycles/scooters must be walked on school grounds. We are looking forward to our school’s Theme Day on Friday, March 30. Our theme this year is “One World, One Day.” Students will learn about various countries and cultures and will be issued their own ‘passport.’ Thank you to all the parents who created the fabulous bulletin board displays in the halls. These are a beautiful addition to the Theme Day activities. Enjoy the first weekend of spring with your family. Welcome to Spring School Closed for Spring Recess April 2-9

PTO PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Kendra Latorre [email protected]

Spring is officially here, and it’s hard to believe that March is nearly over! As we head into the last few months of school, I would like to thank everyone on the Board and all of our parent volunteers for all you do for Milton and the students. You are greatly appreciated!

Thank you to Brenda Beebe, Carolyn Chasalow and all our MAS Room Parents for organizing and decorating the bulletin boards for Milton’s upcoming Theme Day on March 30. Thank you to Roberta Bitar, Caroline Panico, Cathy Hackett, and Nona LeRoux for organizing our recent sessions of Art in the Classroom.

Thank you to Betty Castello for getting our Spring Plant Sale underway. Please see information below on how to order plants.

Thank you also to Amy Sweeney for organizing the Tools 4 Schools program. A few reminders for next week: Mixed Bag Designs orders are due, Plant Sale orders

are due, and Friday, March 30 is Milton’s Theme Day. In case you missed the 2012-2013 School Budget discussion at our last PTO meeting,

you can view the presentation on the district website by clicking on the following link: https://www.chatham-nj.org.

The school budget vote is on Tuesday, April 17, and every vote counts. If you need an absentee ballot, you may request one by using the following link: http://morriscounty clerk.org/ html/Elections/ pre_ballot. asp. Absentee ballot applications must be received by April 10. Have a great weekend, and enjoy this beautiful weather!

Please remember to call the 24/7 absentee line if your child will be taking additional vacation days around the upcoming spring break schedule, April 2-9.

The deer tick population seems to be thriving and has come through the mild winter months virtually unscathed and with resilience. Please remember to check your child(ren), or teach older child(ren) how to check themselves, for ticks after they have been playing outside

in grassy areas or in the woods. Ticks are most commonly found on the head, especially behind the ears and on warmer body parts such as under the arms and the groin. If you find a tick on your child, do not panic (I know--easier said than done), but the outcome will most likely be more positive.

The most efficient way to remove a tick is by placing straight pointed tweezers behind the tick's head and applying GENTLE pressure. This can take up to two(2) minutes. (Gentle pressure will force the barbed legs of the tick to release its grasp on the skin and is required not to squeeze the contents of the tick's mouth/head into the opening of the skin.) This could lead to the transfer of bacteria from the tick into the opening in the skin.

Signs of Lyme Disease to watch for include the following: Flu like symptoms of fever, joint pain/stiffness, general malaise, nausea, and a possible bulls eye.

There have been several students affected by head lice this week. Informational brochures have been sent home with the students in those classes. Please continue to check

your child(ren's) head/hair for nits/lice if they complain of an itchy scalp or you notice excessive scratching. Thank you for your cooperation in notifying me if your child(ren) have been affected. Call me if you have questions.

Mixed Bags Fundraiser Ends March 30: There is just one week left to order the beautiful bags and other items for sale during our Mixed Bag Designs fundraiser. Samples of some items are on display in the school office.

District-Wide Walk to School Week: A district-wide Walk to School Week is being organized for April 23 to April 27. To enable as many children as possible to walk to school, some neighborhoods will be forming Walking School Buses. These are groups of children who walk designated routes to school under adult supervision, picking up other children along the way, just like a school bus. Please talk to friends and neighbors about organizing buses and joining the fun. Ideas and information are available at http://guide.saferoutesinfo.org/walking_school_bus/index.cfm.

Eco Film and Discussion Series Continues: What is the environmental impact of how we live every day? In “No Impact Man”, Colin Beavan vows to make as little environmental impact as possible for one year. No more automated transportation, no more electricity, no more non-local food, no more material consumption...no problem. But his espresso-loving wife and two-year-old daughter have different ideas. “No Impact Man” will be screened on April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the Library of the Chathams, followed by a lively discussion, led by Chatham Borough Councilman Len Resto. Free admission and refreshments. (See attached flyer for more information about this movie.)
