Dollarize Your Worth

Do the math and really calculate the benefit and costs in numbers, statistics, and facts regarding your moneymaker so your clients feel the pain or the pleasure of paying what you are worth!

Numbers hit people right between the eyes.

1. Get statistics to clarify the pain your dream client is experiencing. Make sure they show the problem for which you are the solution.

Example: FACT—Women spend 30 BILLION dollars a year, yet less than 2% ever break the million-dollar mark. In fact, according to Linkage Research and Consulting, many women business owners make only $60,000 a year. We have come a long way, baby, yet we are still not making the big bucks like men. Consider this: Yes, with all the strides in access, education, and resources, we women have tended to our logos, our social media, and our network meetings, but we have not tended to our most important asset: our sense of self.

2. Do the math—cost first

People are more motivated to move away from pain than to move toward pleasure. Meaning, generally speaking, people are more prone to get the rotten tooth extracted after the pain has become unbearable than go to regularly scheduled cleanings to avoid the problem altogether. You need both in your speaking, copy, branding, and marketing.

Start to think whether sugar (benefits) or salt (costs) will best speak directly to the heart of your dream clients. Let’s start with cost.

Put a price tag on what it is actually costing them to NOT take your training. Include both the financial cost and the emotional cost. For example, if you are a fitness expert and you know from lived experience that people generally have three different-size clothes in their closet—the size they used to be, the size they want to be, and the size they actually are right now—then you can put a dollar value on it. Here is an example:

How much money have you spent on the three sizes of clothes in your closet—the size you used to be, the size you want to be, and the size you actually are right now? How

much money has gone down the tubes with failed diets, abandoned gym memberships, and natural “supplements” to get slim quick, but you just put the pounds back on in the last three years? 100 bucks? 500 bucks? Let me guess: THOUSANDS of dollars. I know because I have been there. And I have a solution…

You could always throw a statistic in there to really paint the picture. The point here is you are helping people visualize the monetary cost as well as the emotional cost by putting a dollar amount on the cost. If you don’t reveal the pain, people don’t buy.

3. Benefits

As I said, you need some sugar so the salt doesn’t make people want to slit their wrist. One surefire way to monetize a benefit is to paint the picture of how much they would save from your services. Let’s use time as an example.

Can you imagine making twice as much money in half the time?

If you hired a kick-butt VA, you would be freed up to do revenue-generating activities, instead of being overwhelmed with dull details. Imagine saving 5 hours a week that you can then turn into billable hours at an hourly rate of $250. That’s an extra $1,000 of cold hard cash in your pocket, and not because you worked harder. You worked smarter by letting me take care of the details that make you want to eat nails…

Lastly, use descriptive language that tells a story. Focus on what they are going to get instead of what you do. For the love of God, do NOT use an “I am” statement when describing your worth. Don’t say, “I am an accountant,” or coach, or CPA. Paint a picture of what they want and need from you that only you can provide your way.

Don’t: I am an accountant.

Do: I work with small-business owners who are just starting out and help them get peace of mind and financial freedom. (When you do that, it opens up the space for the obvious question: How?)

Monetize Your Worth: Price your worth in a way that makes you proud—and VERY uncomfortable

Look in the mirror (if you can, naked) and state your number. After saying your number, I ask you to double or triple it.

You should be sweating by now.

Your self-esteem survival strategies should be screaming: “NOOOOOOO!!!!! That’s unrealistic. No one is going to pay you that. Get real!!!” Trust me, I know.

Now that you have stretched, look at your number and pick a new number that is bigger than where you started, but not as scary as the double or the triple. It should be a stretch for you, but it also needs to be a number that makes you proud of yourself. When I started my company, my first offer was $99. My palms sweat just remembering it. Now my products, services and offers range from $19.99 for my best-selling book up to $100,000.00 for my customized yearlong mastermind business success training.

But I didn’t start there. I started with what I could believe, plus a stretch that would make me proud of myself for delivering the service and being compensated for it. Sometimes you have to just get some evidence that you really can do this before you swing out. That’s okay. It is internal permission to prosper. You need to be crystal clear on the value of what you are offering and the cost if they don’t take your services before you will allow yourself to stand in full authority that you can deliver. And you have to package it so they literally can see, smell, and taste the value.

Package your moneymaker in such a way that your clients shout from the hilltops, “Worth every penny!” Stop selling yourself as a commodity—you are not a commodity. You are not a plumber, so stop trading dollars for hours. It’s not about how many hours you work; it’s about the value you bring to that hour. Think about it. Would you rather spend 8 hours reading a 300-page manual about how to leverage your worth in the marketplace or would you rather read and pay for a 1-page white paper from an expert who only writes on that topic? People pay for value. People will save on what’s common to pay for what’s unique and special. You are unique and special. So we have to position your worth as such. We need to position your business as a boutique business. Think Tiffany versus Wal-Mart. People save up for years to buy Tiffany crystal; people run to Wal-Mart to get some glasses for the backyard barbeque. When you position your business as a boutique business or as a luxury brand or as an elite thought leader, you can then charge more for your products, services, and offers. So how do you position yourself as the go-to person that high-end clients run to, money in fist, ready to buy? Name it and claim it. Your positioning is directly linked

to your packaging, and your packaging is directly linked to your worth.

Take your worth/value from the first page and think through how you can turn what you do into a simple step-by-step process or system that others need. Figure out how long it

The seven story archetypes are:

1. Overcoming the Monster—Use this archetype if your story is about overcoming

adversity, whether it’s addiction, abuse, cancer, a nasty boss, Hurricane Katrina, etc.

This archetype is about slaying some sort of “dragon” so that you win, and by extension

your dream client wins. This archetype is all about restoring balance that’s been

threatened by something grim.

4. Voyage and Return—Use this archetype if your story has to do with leaving a

country or a situation and coming home. The excitement of being in a new place, a new

job, and new country is great—but you organize yourself to go back home to your roots.

empty and used up? So much so, you decided to take the “midnight train to Georgia” to

6. Tragedy—Use this archetype if you keep shooting yourself in the foot. This storyline

is great if you know you always get in your own way. This is a great framework if you

can see how your own arrogance has cost you and you want to save others from that

same pain. This storyline is also great for locating clients. If you work with people who

are going through some sort of tragedy—death, divorce, bankruptcy, teen pregnancy,

etc.—and you have made it to the other side, then you have a tribe who needs you

already identified.

Part Five: Calling Them By Their Name™ Who do you ALREADY have credibility with? What groups? Example: My people/tribe are über-educated, high-achieving, spiritually rooted Black Women who are brilliant but who doubt themselves. They have walked through life’s fire. They may be the first in their families to go to college or the first to make good money in their families.
