Summer Camp Week II June 18—22, 2012
Newsletter by: Laura Clark, 11th Grade
! As our country prepares to
compete in the 2012 Olympics in
London this summer, our campers
competed in a wide variety of
Olympic(ish) events. Once divided
into teams, each team chose a country
to represent. These were Guinea,
Germany and the Former Yugoslov
Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
Campers also learned about these
countries, their flags and anthems.
Medals were even awarded for a
trivia competition based on
knowledge of the respective ‘home’
countries.
We learned about, trained
and competed in many traditional
events, especially Track & Field
events. However, we predictably put
a fun and silly twist on things by
competing in some very
unconventional events that were quite
fun! There were even craft
competitions. Each and every student
earned medals for their team over the
week and had a great time supporting
each other as they playfully competed
for their countries.
Should you have any
questions or concerns regarding
sports camp please contact Coach
Cam at [email protected]. We
hope to see you Monday for another
awesome week!
with Coach Cam and Ms. Sam
This week in the Little House the students learned
facts about insects, the names of the insects body parts, and
completed Practical Life work that had insect manipulatives.
There were insect puzzles for choosing, insect matching, and
insect coloring sheets. The students also enjoyed playing
rhythm instruments, singing songs about insects, participat-
ing in insect themed creative movement, and doing a class
drawing on giant butcher paper. We made insect gliders and
flew them in the back field and created bug jars.
There was a monarch chrysalis in class, and we waited in
anticipation for it to hatch, revealing a butterfly. Splash day
was a big hit, even with the new students. It was a fun week.
The students are looking forward to Fairy Tales next week.
Where did this week go? This week the children learned about some very interesting insects; they es-pecially liked learning about ladybugs (also known as the ladybird beetle).
Here are a few additional activities we enjoyed this week of Summer Camp:
Geography and Science:
We learned there are more than a mil-lion kinds of insects and they live al-most everywhere on Earth! The chil-dren were fascinated with the many different kinds of butterflies and moths.
Spanish:
Ms. Jeanne-Marie joined us this week to present Spanish every day with the children; focusing on the theme of in-sects. She included not only Spanish words for the insects but many songs!
On Wednesday (“Movie Day”):
The children enjoyed watching an old favorite, “A Bug’s Life”!
Music, Movement and Art Activities:
The children learned how to use two
“musical” instruments this week: the triangle (used in the song “Frere Jacques”) and the “Sounding Bowl”.
Some of the children’s favorite songs of the week included “Puff the Magic Dragon” and “Fireflies”.
The favorite art activities included making butterflies using their handprints, Bug gliders, animal pup-pets and “marble-rolling” painting!
Needless to say, the children loved Splash Day on Friday!!
Cooking:
Who said dirt and bugs don’t taste good? The children learned how to make “Dirt” Cake!
Go to Millhopper Tech / Summer Camp for the recipe so that you can enjoy making it with your child at home!
This week we learned a lot
about carpentry skills and tool usage.
The students worked on building a
toolbox, decorative bookends and a
pencil cup as their main projects. Also,
each student spent time using various
tools in our outside tool station.
Handsaws, drills planes, hammers, and
electric sanders were some of the tools
that were used. At the end of the week
the projects went home with the builders
as well as an original creation made from
the scrap box. We were very impressed
with the concentration and focus that the
builders used throughout the week. We
hope they will take the inspiration and
continue to build during the rest of the
summer. Thanks to our counselors and
helpers that worked so hard during the week.
Lindsey and Sunny help each other use the saw.
Fabiana paints her bookends.
Norma and Sofi paint their toolboxes.
Dominick assists some wood-working students with the saw.
Caryss prepares a woodworking webquest for the kids.
Laura works with Penny on her toolbox.
Mia sands down a piece of wood for her project.
Catherine helps the students work on a project.
Mr. Richard helps the students with their projects.
