ank YouMy parents Richard and Virginia Miller worked at the farm together. Dad graduated from OAC in 61 and retired with Ag Canada in 95. My father’s love of farming came from his father and he had a tremendous eye for cattle and was a believer in performance testing. He supported me in eorts like 4H, AI programs and running bull tests. Together we ran a few bulls tests over the years and he was proud when we sold these bulls around the province. With his passing in 2007 I lost my mentor, organiz-er, baler greaser and the list goes on. We have kept the cattle going over the last 6 years with the support of my family and friends. My mother is there when we handle cattle, loading syringes and always longing for gates that swing, she is going to miss checking cows at calving this fall. All the kids over 8 (Lukas, Virginia, Seth and Jed) know what its like to cut bale string at 10pm in January, which is when you feed cows when you have a day job that oen runs late. Mercy (7) and Henry (3) will have other challenges in NZ I am sure. With my Dad gone, the kids were trained in raking and tedding and pulling ropes for the gates when handling cattle. We always worked at the farm as a family when I grew up and I still pulled in my brothers Scott and Jon and their kids along with sister Christine’s kids when needed at haying etc With my job I am oen ying somewhere or away and sure enough this is when things go wrong with the cattle. I have a great bunch of col-leagues and grad students that have stepped up and rushed to the farm for emergencies. is winter was no exception with cows nding too much corn in the stalks and going down with grain overload, when I was in Al-berta. Mom soon had David Ross, Yuri, Mohammed and Mehdi there to help. Dave Ross helped with many an emergency and in fact is the reason behind this catalogue going to print with great pictures. Of course great Neighbours like Dave Dunn and Dave Whetham have got me out of many a tight spot as well. Success has deep roots, thanks to all those that have helped over the years.

Terms e terms of the sale are cash, cheque, or interac on day of the sale. e right of property shall not pass until aer settlement is made. All settle-ments must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. Animals will be sold to the highest bidder. Any disputes will be resolved by the auctioneer at the time of nal bid. e auctioneer’s decision in any such matter is nal. Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.

Health StatusAll the cattle in this catalogue come from a fully vaccinated cow-herd. e Miller cattle were double vaccinated at weaning with Triangle 9 and Covexin 8 and the cow-herd was boostered with Triangle 9 and everyone was treated with Ivermectin Pour-on at that time in April. e Gilbrea program includes ……

e pregnant cattle were checked safe in calf by Dr. Rob Swackhammer with Mains Street Animal Hospital on Aug 6. e cows were all bred to NLDF Yankee 319Y with exposure starting Dec 6. Since the cattle are very far along at the time of preg checking it is dicult to accurately predict calving dates. However, a few of the cows were noted as calving later and I have agged these in the comments. For the most part expect calves from late Sept to mid Nov.

Special Note

Sale starts at 10 am

Sale of cattle will start at the conclusion of sale of farm machinery, including two cattle handling sys-tems in working order.

BIO ABCs

Listed are the BIO ABCs on the cattle. BIO ABCs are like across breed EPDs. We have been recording with BIO for 20 years and using Bio tested bulls along with AI. BIO also calculates the EPD for Leachman’s where some of our bulls have been tested, so the data connection is deep behind these numbers. Compare the EPD on 2 animals to see the dierence you can expect between them in their progeny performance. For example if Cow A ABC for Birth Weight is -2 and cow B ABC for birth weight is -6 then we can expect cow B’s calves to be 4 pounds lighter at birth than the progeny of cow A. Visit www.biobeef.com to learn more about BIO ABCs and their use.

Dedication My dad loved cattle and was impressed with the University herd in New Liskeard. Dad inspired me and supported me in my career in agriculture, which now takes me to New Zealand. is sale is dedicated to him.(Pictured above: Dad (Dick Miller) and Leo Giesen viewing cattle in New Liskeard.

Welcome

I have always seen dispersals as a tremendous opportunity. Dispersals oer the buyer access to the core of a breeding program, cow families that have not been parted with for generations. I have noticed that dispersals oen have one thing in common; they come as a surprise, out of the blue. So it was for us. When I turned the bull out on Dec 6, 2012 with anticipation of the next crop of calves, little did I know that within 6 months I would accept a new position in NewZealand that would see us pulling up stakes, selling out and moving to the other side of the world.

e cowherd that you see in this catalogue is one that I am proud of. ere are some great genetics in here and it has come about through generations of selec-tion, culling and hard work. Back in the nineties BIO had Jim Leachman speak at their AGM. Jim made the point that through AI, everyone has access to the best bulls and in just 3 generations you can have a cow herd that has 90% similarity to say his herd, if you use the same sires. At that time the Leachman herd in Montana was in full swing with the largest 1 brand bull sale in the world. I followed Jim’s advice and through AI we have been able to develop a great herd. We are now supplying bulls back into the Leachman program now run by Lee Leachman in Wellington Colorado. We have now had 4 sets of bulls delivered and sold through their program under that world famous hairpin brand. is is a testament to what Jim said almost 2 decades ago. I had the for-tune of attending the Leachman sale in Colorado on a number of occasions as we developed his $PROFIT index and at those sales I was able to see many progeny from high indexing bulls that I would then use through AI over the herd. Bulls like Leachman Widebody, Few Dollars More, Protégé, ShearForce, and SureBet have all had an impact here in this oering. Some of our bulls did very well in Colorado and these are discussed in more detail in the comments under their dams.

Building with genetics is kind of like building with stones. You need to plant some good big square corner stones at the bottom or you won’t have much of a wall 10 feet up. Interestingly enough the Miller cattle in this cata-logue, with the exception of just 3 head, go back to just 2 cows. ese 2 families we will call the Montana family and the Sally family. ese are described in more detail in the comments. I am a believer in cow families and I think we have 2 good ones for you to pick from.

I was thrilled when Bob Wilson agreed to put some heifers in the sale. Bob is a cooperator for Leachman as well and over the past few years I have had the pleasure of working with Bob. Luckily for me, Bob is very organized and in such he is able to arrange getting cattle successfully exported to Co, not an easy task. Bob is also one of the nicest people I have met and working with him has been a highlight of the last few years with cattle for me. We both produce Stabalizers for Leachman’s. Stabalizer’s are a blend of british and continental breeding, de-signed to compliment and retain hybrid vigour. When looking at the pedigree you will see a strong inuence of Angus and Simmental, with Gelbvieh and South Devon back in the Miller cattle as well.

anks for coming to the sale and I hope you nd this oering an opportunity to further build your own herd with some good big square corner stones for the future.

Welcome

At Gilbrea Farms we produce top quality, prot enhancing cattle called Stabilizers. Stabilizers, being a multi-breed composite, allows the industry to take advantage of hybrid vigour in a simpled manner while producing consistency. By seeking the constant improvement of our herd we can oer excellence at the market place.

With 82 breeding cows our herd is composed of Red and Black Stabilizers. Our composite herd provides hybrid vigour that allows for more malleable crossbreeding, on our own farm and for other producers.e Leachman $Prot is based on genetic evaluations for a num-ber of economically important traits; calving ease, growth, fertility, milking ability, mature cow weight, carcass weight, marbling, rib eye size, feed intake and feed eciency. In addition our cattle are selected for easy to manage temperament, sound conformation and functional udder structure. Working with Bio we have seen the ben-ets of collecting data on our herd. We are currently involved in a genomics project with Bio evaluating tenderness. Gilbrea Farm has been working with Leachman Cattle Co. for 5 years, shipping bulls to Colorado for development, evaluation and marketing.

When our animals are developing, in collaboration with Leachman Cattle Co., we look for a high amount of growth on a lower than average amount of feed. e result is a lower cost to raise our animals, a higher prot at market, leading to a higher prot for a producer that purchases our stock. By stocking their herd with cows that are feed ecient and have a high dollar prot produc-ers are increasing the rate of return that they will get when their herds’ progeny goes to market.

We look forward to seeing you at the sale.

e Montana StoryIn my introductory remarks I mentioned the importance of building on a solid foundation. Here is the cow that was the herd’s Matriarch and the foundation of one of the 2 primary cow families represented here. We called her Montana as she was born and raised outside Billings Montana as part of the Leachman herd. Her hairpin brand was always a standout and her tattoo JHL416B means she comes from the Jim Leachman herd. As a big powerful cow, she was also top of the pecking order. I purchased Montana at the Murray Greaves dispersal in 1998 along with one of her daughters. I scanned the catalogue and the BIO ABCs and was impressed with her, she was 6 at the time. Little did I know that she would be with me for another 15 years. She was ¾ Gelbvieh and ¼ Red Angus, and 100% maternal. Before I brought this cow family to the herd we had lost calves to coyotes, not one lost since. You would not want to be a canine near a Montana mama at calving time. Having said that I calve on pasture and needle, weigh and tag calves in the open, although being close to string of hot wire helps if ¾ tons of bovine expelling hot breath on your neck is too much for your nerves. With lots of growth, milk and rib-eye this cow family really kicked up the performance a notch. Absolutely trouble free is how to explain this family. Of the 22 descendants in this sale, they have never had an assisted birth. In fact Montana herself was trouble free until she had a malpresentation with her nal calving at 21 years and we had to put her down as a result. A very sad day indeed. She has 2 daughters, 5 grand-daughters, 4 great-grand-daughters, 5 great-great-grand-daughters, 5 great-great-great-grand-daughters and 1 great-great-great-great-grand-daughter in the sale. Buy into this family and you won’t be disappointed, although your local coyotes might be.

802U is aectionately known as “Cherry” as she was my daughter Vir-ginia’s 4H heifer that she took to the Royal in Toronto. Cherry is an own daughter of Montana. Cherry has a 362 calving interval on three calves and a 103 MPPA. Following in her mother’s footsteps she has le 2 daughters already. I look at this group and think back to buying Mon-tana and her daughter at the Greaves dispersal, this looks like another such opportunity. We call 25X Little Montana, an incredible resemblance, smaller version of the old cow. Montana was close to 19 when she had 25X and calved late (Dec 28). en a year ago in June I was raking hay and David and Seth came to tell me a heifer had calved. We remembered that we actu-ally had a group of bulls on test the previous fall that went to Leach-man’s. ey had got mixed up with the young heifers once and that was all it took. Calved at 1.5 years unassisted and is bred back to calve with the rest of the herd. is is the fertility you can expect with this family. CE BW WG YG Milk ABC 5.3 -5.4 42 82 42

A Mytty In Focus daughter and a grand daughter of Montana herself. When you see her you will see the power that the Montana family has added to the Mytty In Focus. Stout would be a shocking understatement to describe this cow. She is big enough to burn diesel. When we rst put the $Prot index together for Leachman’s it identied one outstanding bull and that was Few $ More (FDM). Not only was Few $ More a standout from a performance perspective but he was an awesome bull phenotypically. His downfall as a purebred black Angus was that he was a carrier for lethal recessives in that breed, which has little risk in a composite crossbreeding program as we run. Repeatedly we now see dams from FDM as producing some of the top indexing sons. Once FDM became available in Canada we used him heavily, his numbers really were hard to beat. We have 3 daughters of FDM in the sale and 16S is the standout. We have sent some excellent bulls to Leachman’s but one of the highest indexing bulls we sold there topped a Feb internet sale for $5K was from 16S and was the highest $Prot bull in the sale. We are fortunate that the last 2 calves from 16S have been heifers and these are oered here as 14Y and 31Z. So if you are looking for a correct well made top producing cow that will make you money then 16S is the girl for you.

Here is an outstanding young cow with 3 generations of great cows behind her. When Montana was purchased she was pregnant and gave birth to 3J who had 3L from NewDesign 036. e sire 036 went on to be one of the most impactful sires in the Angus breed due to his combination of calving ease, growth and carcass traits. e cow 3L was one of the best we have had and we had to cull her due to an injured stie. However, before she le, 3L le us an ex-cellent heifer in 26W from the Sirius bull, an In Focus son. 26W’s rst calf was from Hooks ShearForce and was a low birth weight bull, with an impressive phenotype and excellent early ABCs at weaning, all the makings of a high $Prot in the Leachman system. As a result this calf is now on test at Leachman’s in Colorado and was one of the best bull prospects we sent this past spring. You will love 26W’s phenotype, disposition and excellent udder. Combin-ing Mytty In Focus, 036 and Montana in one red package, pheno-type and performance to match, 26W is one to go aer.

30Z BULL 26 Nov2012is bull was born too late to head to Colorado this past spring. We decided that a bull with this much capacity and breeding may have interest to those looking to raise their own herd sire prospect. Here is your chance, look at the scrotal on such a young calf. He has not been on creep so this is all natural performance right from the grass. His numbers are great for calving ease and low birth weight not to mention the spread on his weaning and yearling gains. 30Z will produce females that will milk, just look at his dam 10P

ese 2 females represent the cow family that inuences the next 13 lots in the sale. All 15 lots go back to one cow. When I was just a kid in 4H my Dad and I went to visit George ompson from Plattsville and I picked a heifer from his herd, and paid with the money I made raising goats. When I took rst in my class at the Rockton fair the next year, George’s son wondered why his dad sold me that heifer. at cow went on the have 74G who had 2J, the mother of these full sisters 2P and 4N. Both 2P and 4N are from the red Angus bull Cherokee Canyon. Cherokee Canyon was a Red Angus bull that combined some growth, calving ease, marbling and Rib-eye. is is a rare combination in the breed. You will see that these 2 females are a nice moderate size. is line of cows is excellent for fertility and udders. Both of these cows have produced bulls that have gone to Colorado to sell in the Leachman sales

A nice moderate daughter of 2P from the Sirius bull. Her rst calf was an embryo and as a result calved in the winter. She calved in early January this year and expect she will walk even further back in the Calendar in this next year as this cow family is known to do. Fertility is a plus in these cows. A daughter of 2P from the Protégé bull. Protégé was a black Angus owned by Leachmans that was used heavily and we used as well. He was very high $PROFIT and turned out to be exceptional for low birth weight. By the time the rest of the world discovered how good he was we already had daughters like this and semen is now rare and expensive. is heifer was tested at Gilbrea and has a nice set of ABC across the board. 3Z 29 Jul2012is heifer may be the most stacked pedigree in the sale. Hooks Shearforce is the black Simmental that is heavily used in the Leachman program for many good reasons. is sire continues to be in the pedigree of the highest $PROFIT bulls in the program because he does so many things well, including excellent carcass traits combined with birth weight that is as low as the lowest Angus. is Simmental sire has le some of the lowest birth weight calves that have ever hit the ground on our farm. But they jump up and grow and have awesome phenotype and shape. is heifer had a 68lb BW, with a top 1% ABC and yet top 15% for yearling gain. 1S real claim to fame was a bull calf she had come o test in Colorado and really turned some heads. He was red, solid, moderate, he really had some wow factor and a great set of numbers to back him up. Funny as he almost missed the bus to Colorado as he was pretty plain, and a late bloomer. ank YouMy parents Richard and Virginia Miller worked at the farm together.
