Walt gave a good history of the weapons and insight on some of the technical reasons they were destroyed and the USA capabilities in this area. The SENCLAND chapter is blessed to have so many in our chapter who can share their experiences at meetings.

Message from our President, John Stewart We wish to thank BG Walt Busby for being our speaker at the November meeting. We have all heard some bits and pieces of the destruction of chemical weapons, but have never had the opportunity to know how and why it was done as well as the joint nation effort for destruction. Walt gave a good history of the weapons and insight on some of the technical reasons they were destroyed and the USA capabilities in this area. The December meeting will be our opportunity to hear Susan Savia as she presents a musical selection for us. If you have not sent in the RSVP for the meeting, please do so as soon as possible. This is always a high point for the year and we thank Jim Jackson for making the arrangements as well as handling all of our programs. We will have some additional business for this meeting. We will have our biennial election of officers for the chapter. The nominating committee will present the following slate of officers: President – Jim Brumit; 1st Vice President – Ken Klassen; 2nd Vice President – Bob Philpott. The service representatives are also elected at this time, and the nominations are: USA – Paul Woodbury; USN – Don Hill; USAF – Ron Lafond; USMC – Chuck Akstin; USCG – Dave Foster: and USPHS – Truman McCasland. We will hold the election at the December meeting and the officers will be installed at the January meeting with our past president Jeri Graham installing the officers. We hope to see you all at the Bluewater in December for the final meeting of 2015. We ask that you think of the work done by the chapter thru the years to advance the causes of the active duty and former military members. We have expanded our outreach to include veteran organizations and other military related activities. This is possible only thru your generosity. We thank you for the past donations and ask you to “dig deep” so we can continue our support. Important Travel Advisory taken from Air Force Times…a sign of the times in which we live…

A travel ban is in place for U.S. military personnel planning to go to Paris. Unofficial travel to Paris is

prohibited — including leave, liberty and special pass — and includes a 50-kilometer radius around the city.

The travel restriction, implemented in the aftermath of Friday's deadly attacks in Paris, applies to all Defense

Department personnel, according to a statement from U.S. European Command.

Personnel on official travel or emergency leave to Paris or elsewhere in France will need approval from a

general officer, according to EUCOM. In addition, DOD personnel who wish to go on unofficial travel

elsewhere in France will also need approval from a general officer, according to EUCOM.

The policy applies to military personnel, DOD civilian employees, contractors and command-sponsored

dependents and family members. The policy also applies to cruise-ship shore excursions but does not apply to

military personnel assigned to diplomatic posts in France and individuals who have commercial airline

connections in the country and will not leave the secure portions of airport terminals, according to the statement

from EUCOM. The travel restriction is a "precautionary measure" to keep personnel and families safe in light

of the recent attacks, EUCOM said. It also is an effort to help minimize tourist traffic at the borders in France,

and particularly in Paris, as French authorities continue their investigation. SENCLAND Chapter in Need of a New Leadership Program Head With a change in chapter leadership coming in January, an opportunity exists for someone to help our organization by taking on the duties of the Leadership Program head. MOAA Legislative Affairs Update: Congressional leaders have said 2016 will be the year of TRICARE reform. This is a matter of great importance to uniformed service beneficiaries of all ages. Your input concerning your and your family's health care use and preferences will be of great help in seeking to ensure beneficiary needs are properly addressed in whatever reforms may be considered. To facilitate the gathering of input, MOAA has created a short survey that can be found by clicking on the following link: http://survey.highroadsolution.com/votingmodule/VOTING3/f/998692/8b25/?msig=96325c1137ab3050923a2455cbcb4c7a

Voices for America’s Troops

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) plays a key role with the U. S. Congress and the Department of Defense by protecting and improving the entitlements and benefits of all military members and their families. With more than 370,000 members from every branch of Service - including active duty, National Guard, Reserve, retired, former officers, and their families, MOAA is a powerful force speaking for a strong national defense and representing the interests of Service men and women at every stage of their careers. There are many American's who want to support MOAA's goals and advocacy efforts, but can’t be members because they are not current or former military officers. To ensure that their voices are heard, MOAA has formed a new organization called "Voices for America's Troops". Membership in Voices for America's Troops is open to all members of the public, age 18 or older, who share MOAA's interest in maintaining a strong national defense and sustaining essential support systems for our military members, families and survivors. If you know of civilians that would like to become a member of Voices for America's Troops and support its goals, please pass this information to them. More information about the organization and how to become a member is available on its website: <http://www.voicesfortroops.org/>. Press “CTL” and click on this link to go directly to the website.

WWII Veterans……..We Need to Hear from You

Last February, SENCLAND Chapter honored our 26 living members who served during WWII. At the luncheon we honored those veterans with a roll call and brief summary of their service as part of the tribute. All of these remarkable men had stories of interest. Following the special luncheon we invited the WWII veterans to send us their WWII stories which we have periodically published in our Newsletter and on the Chapter Website. We know that there are more accounts of WWII experiences not yet received and we encourage the WWII veterans, or their families, to submit those for publication in the Newsletter and Website. This will make it possible for all Chapter members to be aware of the contribution our members made to victory in Europe and the Pacific.

Coming in March & April – a Focus on the Korean War

At our March 2016 luncheon meeting, SENCLAND Chapter will have a speaker who will explain the United States' role in the Korean War. Then in April 2016 we will have a special luncheon specifically honoring the Chapter's Korean War veterans in the same manner as the WWII Luncheon. If you would like to volunteer to help plan and conduct that event, please contact Al Schroetel at [email protected].

Chapter Membership Dues for 2016 Annual SENCLAND Chapter membership payments are due in January of each year. Our Chapter derives its funding for Chapter activities almost exclusively through membership dues. The annual dues ($15 for members and $10 for surviving spouses) are the lowest in the State. Chapter dues pay for representational items at military and veteran functions, special events like our WWII Veteran's Recognition Luncheon last February, MOAA logo gifts for luncheon speakers, membership in the North Carolina MOAA Council of Chapters, website maintenance, mailing costs, and other operational expenses. Dues are waived for the following two categories of members: * All members 90 years of age or older * New chapter members for the remainder of the calendar year in which they join. Thus, if a member joins in January dues are waived for the entire year. As you make your payment for 2016, please also consider including a donation to the our Chapter's Outreach Programs Fund, which provides the funds for the Junior ROTC Scholarships as well as support for local veterans and military members and their families. Please print the following and mail your dues to: SENCLAND Chapter (MOAA) PO Box 15207 Wilmington, NC 28408 You may also bring the completed form and payment to the monthly luncheon Name: _____________________________________ Dues__________ Mailing address______________________________ Outreach Donations______ Total _______ Email Address: __________________________________ Telephone number _______________________________ Indicate where there are changes such as phone number or a new address. If you have a question about your payment status please contact Al Schroetel at: [email protected], or 910-686-6905.

SENCLAND Sentinel – Our Chapter’s Voice Our newsletter is published monthly (except July & August) in sufficient time to provide information on upcoming meetings. We want this newsletter to be of value to you, but we do not aim to compete with established print, broadcast, or online media, and we do not simply distill what MOAA National is publishing in Military Officer each month. What we want to do here is keep you informed about the chapter and our SENCLAND efforts to stay connected with each other, and support our local military and veteran communities.

To that end, we encourage you to provide content for publication in our newsletter and online. Simply send your notices, letters, articles, and photos to our editor, Brud Deas, ([email protected]) as you collect them. Everything submitted by the 15th of the month will be considered for inclusion in the following month’s newsletter. All items are subject to editing.

SENCLAND Sentinel accepts sponsorships from our members and other supporters. You can see a full listing of current sponsors at the end of each newsletter. Soliciting sponsorship in this way provides a nice way to recognize our sponsors while allowing us to keep our dues the lowest in the state. If you would like to discuss sponsorship opportunities for yourself, your company, other veteran fraternal and support organizations, or anyone else that appreciates the mission of SENCLAND MOAA, please email Brud.

Cash sponsorships in excess of the cost of publishing this newsletter in its current format will augment our local military and veteran outreach activities, increasing the positive effect that we have on our local community. Consider inviting your neighbors to participate by sharing this newsletter with them and talking about MOAA SENCLAND.

Also, remember that SENCLAND Sentinel and a great deal of additional information are available at any time on the Chapter's website: www.sencland.org. If you need assistance in accessing the website, contact Ken Klassen at (910) 791-3999.

Whenever possible, please patronize our sponsors and let them know we all appreciate their support of our important initiatives.
