ADULT PROGRAM KEYNOTE ADDRESS, 1:15-2:00 PM ~ WORKSHOPS, 2:30-3:55 PM.

YOU CAN ATTEND THE KEYNOTE AND ONE WORKSHOP

KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Kate Maupin – Banishing the Boredom Boredom doesn’t have to be a necessary part of life for a gifted student. However, many gifted children lack both the resources and the practice with dealing with their boredom, and some turn to negative outlets when left to their own devices. Banishing the Boredom discusses several tools and techniques for helping bored students, including what skills to teach them, and how to encourage them to be their own advocate when they aren’t being challenged.

Kate Maupin is a gifted-education teacher and enrichment specialist and author of the book: Cheating, Dishonesty, and Manipulation: Why Bright Kids Do It. She is an alumna of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented at UCONN, and has worked with students throughout New England, China, and Germany before settling in CT where she works with students K-6.

WORKSHOP #1 by Dr. Ivan Tirado – Creative Thinking: Between Learning and Art The perception of ‘the self’ develops through the interaction and reciprocal influence between personal factors, the environment, and behavior. Conscious and unconscious interpretations of responses from the environment in the form of internal and external experiences affect and influence the individual mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, based on the capacities and limitations of those personal factors. The perception of “the self” is affirmed by the environment, and validated through behavior towards the environment in the form of agency, influencing, in a reciprocal fashion, the environment. The environment influences the individual, as the individual influences the environment. Dr. Ivan Tirado-Cordero, international contemporary artist and instructional designer, was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico and is an adjunct faculty at Quinnipiac University, where he teaches the First Year Seminar on Inquiry Based Learning. He has a bachelors’ degree in Humanities in Liberal Arts, a masters in education in Instructional Technology, and a doctorate in philosophy in education in Instructional Design.

WORKSHOP #2 by Jessica DeYoung – Understanding Online Safety for Children In partnership with the Milford Police Department and the Milford Prevention Council, this workshop provides a critical understanding of our digital and online footprints created through everyday use of tablets, smartphones and popular apps such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and the inadvertent access this provides to others of images and information our families and children. Learn the best ways to manage your family’s online presence.

Jessica DeYoung is a partner at DeYoung Media, a family-run digital marketing company that specializes in developing and managing email and social media marketing strategies for maximum return on investment. She has a degree in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has developed this workshop as her final project for completion of the Parent Leadership Training Institute.

WORKSHOP #3 by Dr. Danette Day – Exploring Mindfulness Are you mindful or mindless? How often do you find yourself running on auto pilot? Do you live each moment fully? In this workshop, participants will learn about mindfulness, what it is and examine the basic elements of mindfulness. Also, participants will practice mindfulness, identify its benefits for school and the workplace. If time permits participants will devise an action plan to integrate mindfulness in their everyday lives. Dr. Danette Day is an Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Fitchberg State University in MA and has twenty-five-year career in higher, public, private, charter and innovation school education. She has doctorate of Education on Teacher Education and School Improvement from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA.

WORKSHOP #4 by James Maroney – Preparing for Funding a College Education A college education is now a benchmark pre-requisite of entry-level employment in almost any job sector in the country and providing this education is an expectation that most families intend for their children. College tuition and expenses are already incredibly costly and are expected to continue to increase in the coming years. Find out how much a college education is expected to cost and how to prepare for funding this important investment in your child(ren)’s future. James Maroney is President of First Choice College Placement in Milford, CT

WORKSHOP #5 by Donna Johnson – Perfectionism Perfectionism has been a popular topic at gifted trainings in multiple settings. Dr. Johnson will share a variety of materials that have been used very successfully by people working with gifted and highly creative children. She will be available before and after the presentation. Be prepared to leave this session with several new ideas for helping your child. Dr. Donna Johnson began her career as an elementary teacher and later became a principal, director and college professor. A closet perfectionist herself, she strives to provide insight and guidance for other perfectionists.

WORKSHOP #6 by Talina Galvez – Herbal Remedies Herbs are an effective way to bring wellness and promote holistic health for children and adults. During this 90 minute workshop we will dive into the ancient healing art of herbalism and we will discuss different herbal preparations to support our bodies during stressful times, benefiting both, children and adults alike, bringing joy and light into our often overworked minds, hearts and bodies. Talina Galvez teaches workshops in herbal remedies through her company the Seven Jewels by Talina located in Milford, CT
