Computer system production was stopped. No one had a method of detecting intermittent microcode memory failures.
I developed a new method for detecting the failures. My hand-built design, successfully restored global production.I was awarded four patents:– 4,510,603 Testing system for reliable access times in ROM semiconductor
memories– 4,379,265 Dual clocking time delay generation circuit– 4,430,735 Apparatus and technique for testing IC memories– 4,429,389 Test pattern address generator
A marketing group was unable to find a performance monitoring system that met their requirements and offered me an R&D position to develop one.Accepted the position and developed a performance measurement system. It identified system bottlenecks, and ways to boost computer performance with system upgrades.Used to boost sales of computer equipment in the USA and Canada.
A communication system manager quit.I was asked to save the failed project.A re-designed system exceeded specifications. My group met almost impossible deadlines.
Patents awarded: 4,514,824 Byte-oriented line adapter system4,456,970 Interrupt system for peripheral controller4,507,732 I/O subsystem using slow devices4,430,710 Subsystem controller4,428,043 Data communications network4,379,328 Linear sequencing microprocessor facilitating4,374,418 Linear microsequencer unit cooperating with microprocessor system having dual modes4,374,416 Linear sequencing microprocessor having word and byte handling4,371,931 Linear micro-sequencer for micro-processor system utilizing specialized instruction format4,301,505 Microprocessor having word and byte handling4,293,909 Digital system for data transfer using universal input-output microprocessor4,292,667 Microprocessor system facilitating repetition of instructions4,291,372 Microprocessor system with specialized instruction format4,290,106 Microprocessor system with source address selection4,287,560 Dual mode microprocessor system
An immediate need existed for a low cost communications
system
Developed a high-speed “C” firmware architecture to run four high speed lines on an existing, low cost, board.
After developing a hardware/firmware prototype, my software partner was late, so were losing our contract.
• Dissolved my partnership and completed the software myself.• Offered the entire project, at half the cost, from RDC Enterprises (my
consulting company).• The product resulted in a power measurement patent:
– 4,713,608 Apparatus for providing cost efficient power measurement
• The product did well, and the company was purchased by a large competitor, 5 years later.
Power Control and Environmental Monitoring System
Team Cotter Racing needed a better data acquisition system
Developed the data acquisition system prototype, and a new company was founded to manufacture and sell it.
Having experience designing data acquisition systems, and a fascination with Indy race cars, I volunteered to develop a systemto meet their requirements
Edge RacingRDC Enterprises designed system upgrades and new peripherals for the Edge product line for over ten years.
Validation of a drive controller, requires an accurate, adjustable, timing model for the rotating media.
None existed.Developed a model, using FPGAs, memory devices, and host automation software. It produced timings that matched the product design requirements. The model resulted in the awards on the next slide.
Award from Infineon, for successful validation of the first Xbox drive controller
(0 Defects)
Patent awarded: #7,031,902
As a victim of the latest recession, I was frustrated during job interviews, when told I
was “overqualified”.Nobody had a problem with me being “overqualified” when I was a consultant, and owner of RDC Enterprises. So, it was time to start a new consulting business:
Received 2 awards from the Who’s Who Registry, because of my numerous computer design patents, (next Slide).Another patent was granted:
7,800,856 Disk Drive flushing write cache to reserved tracks during a power failure
Who’s Who Honors:Lifetime Honorary Member Featured Member in the Registry
