What is Miles of Smiles?
• Preventive Dental Health Program• Targets 2nd & 5th Grade children in Roseville
City Schools• Dental Hygiene education & screening• Application of sealants to healthy molars
• Identification of children with severe dental problems and referral for care
The History• Began in 2001-2 School year – 2
schools
• Goal to become Rotary’s signature Community project
• Access to dental care is #1 children’s health problem in Placer County
• Rotary District Grant
Who are the partners?• Rotary Club of Roseville

• Sacramento District Dental Society Fnd
• Local dentists
The role of Rotary• Provide volunteers for clinic week & set up• Fund cost of supplies and hours of hygienist
& assistant• Arrange for follow-up care
• Assist getting children to appointments
• Getting out the word to the public
The role of the School District
• Provide a room with sink & water for a week• Arrange class time for hygiene education• Store equipment & supplies• Schedule dates with Rotary• Send out & collect permission
forms• Communicate with parents• Support of program
New role for Rotary• Contract with health educator for classroom
instruction, hygienist & agency for dental assistant
• Deliver dental equipment & supplies to each school
• Print up all forms• Purchase supplies &
educational materials• Seek additional funding
The role of the Dental Society Foundation
• Identify local dentists who will provide free service
• Schedule clinics in Sacramento region• Underwrite costs
of clinic days
• Coordinate with local programs

• Federal Government goal was to have 50% of children have sealants by 2010
• Smile Day added in 2005-6 – Screening of all kindergartners
• Over 2,000 hours donated by Rotary Family volunteers
• Add promotion of drinking Roseville flouridated water
