Seventeen Nimitz Sailors and one Nimitz spouse volunteered to help beautify Lions Park in Bremerton, Jan. 28. The Nimitz team helped plant around 20,000 plants and trees through the park.
“It’s honestly the first thing I’ve done in Bremerton,” said Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Ashley Schenkel. “It feels good to become a part of this commu-nity and to do good here while I can. It’s really exciting.”
Bremerton Park Service workers and other residents of the city worked with the Nimitz’ volunteer team to beautify the park.
“I know it’s probably their day off and mine too. We feel it’s great for the community and great for them to do something,” said Chris Smith, Park Services Specialist for the city of Bremerton. “Some of the guys on our crew are prior Navy and volunteering is something we used to do.”
The group of Sailors ranged from some of the senior officers aboard to
the junior enlisted. “I live on this side of Bremerton, and
it looks like they’re doing good things with this park and having Nimitz come here to help is awesome,” said Cmdr. Dave Eppezzato, Nimitz mini-boss.
One of the Sailors checked aboard less than a month ago and signed up as soon as she heard about the com-munity relations project.
“I used to volunteer a lot before the Navy, and I enjoyed it,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Kayla McCurry. “It’s a great thing to help others and show you’re not selfish.”
The park has been an ongoing proj-ect and according to the park service representatives, the effort Nimitz Sailors put in was a great help.
“I really appreciate the Sailors com-ing out, because we have a lot of work to do and when volunteers come out to help, it helps me out and the City of Bremerton Parks Department,” said Smith. “I think it shows the Nimitz cares about the place they live.”
The Nimitz community relations project was coordinated by the Religious Ministries Department.

With three naval installations in Kitsap County, as well as quick access to other installations around the Puget Sound region, the community’s ties to the military run deep.
Whether you are a service member, or a spouse of a service member, this year’s event aims high to give you not only the opportunity to learn more about how the military can serve you, but also how you can engage in the
community. There are also many fun activities
for kids, including face-painting with Kitsap’s royalty, Miss Kitsap, Miss Poulsbo and Miss Silverdale. There will also be a mini-boot camp with Sgt. Major, to whip the young ones into shape. Additionally, the event will feature a batting cage, a mini bowling alley and lots of prizes throughout the day.
The event start’s with an opening ceremony featuring Naval Base Kitsap Executive Officer Cmdr. James Travers and the Naval Hospital Bremerton color guard presenting colors.
The soundtrack for the day will be
provided by the renown Navy Band Northwest and other musical acts. The WOLF 100.7 FM will broadcast live during the day, spinning country hits and engaging with the crowd, handing out prizes.
The Tacoma Rainiers mascot will be on hand, representing the minor league baseball team that traces back to the area’s baseball history.
The USS Stennis and the USS Nimitz will have ombudsmen tables to answer questions.
More than 130 booths have been rented for the day, giving event-goers the chance to take a stroll down edu-cational row, where members and their families can learn about the school options the area has to offer. Also on the docket are a wellness row, boasting free chair massages, a military row with representatives avail-able to answer questions and provide information.
And for those interested in the culi-nary opportunities Kitsap has to offer, local chefs and bakers will staff restau-rant row, giving out samples.
Welcome to Kitsap! We salute you!

Sailors assigned to the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) beach detachment helped staff members from the Clear Creek Task Force (CCTF) remove brush from the Clear Creek Trail (CCT) in Silverdale Feb 1.
The purpose of the brush removal was to further expand the trail for citizens of the com-munity to use.
“This is my second time I’ve worked on the trail, I enjoy giving back to my commu-nity,” said Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Wayne Selvester. “I use this trail often on my free time so it’s great to work on something I use.”
The CCTF was established in 1993 to create and maintain a community wide network to mobilize support, and educate and focus actions to preserve, protect and restore the Clear Creek
ecosystem. “We’re glad to have Sailors volunteer
in our community, so I was glad when the detachment showed up to help us out today,” said Mary Earl, a coacher for the CCTF. “We will be working on clearing the trail of old blackberry bushes and building a roof over the Silverdale welcome sign to protect it from further damage from the weath-
er.”“It’s amazing to
be out here helping out with the trail, it gives me something to do away from work that I feel good about,” said Hull Maintenance Technician 2nd Class Robert Paasch, a mem-ber of the beach detachment.
The Clear Creek Trail Project is a “grassroots community effort” sup-ported by financial and volunteer labor donations.
For information on volunteering to work on the CCT project please contact the CCTF at [email protected].

It’s like musical chairs — only with U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. But no one will be left without a seat because when one ship leaves Bremerton, another will arrive.
The arrival of the aircraft car-rier USS Ronald Reagan in January 2012 will coincide with the depar-ture of the current temporarily homeported USS Nimitz.
More than 2,800 crewmembers arrived aboard the USS Nimitz at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton Dec. 9 2010 for a one-year temporary homeport period after a nine-year homeport at Naval Air Station - North Island in San Diego.
The aircraft carrier is undergoing maintenance at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. This is the only government dry dock capable of accommodating the ship, said Chief Petty Officer Dale Davis, spokesman for Naval Base Kitsap.
The Navy made the official switch of homeport to allow the
families of sailors to qualify for help in moving to Kitsap.
The USS Nimitz’s destination after the temporary homeport will
be Naval Station Everett. The carrier, commissioned in
1975, is the first in its class of 10 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
And when USS Nimitz departs for Everett at the end of the year, the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan will soon make its tempo-rary home in Bremerton for repairs as well.
The USS Ronald Reagan will undergo about 12 months of repair and maintenance at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard beginning January 2012, according to a January 2011 statement from U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Belfair.
The carrier, commissioned in 2003 and currently homeported in San Diego, will complete a series of scheduled repairs during the “docking planned incremental availability” at the shipyard.
While the ship is in port, the Navy will change the homeport assignment for the crew of 158 offi-cers and 2,895 sailors, representing an annual payroll of $225.8 million.
The USS John C. Stennis remains homeported in Bremerton.

USS Nimitz is one of the aircraft carriers that call Kitsap County home. Many ships come through Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, but those homeported here are near and dear to Kitsap residents.

For military families who yearn for the comfort of a four-legged addition to the family while sta-tioned on the Kitsap Peninsula, there are some important guide-lines and tips to consider before choosing a new pet.
Firstly, time plays a factor in this process. It’s vital that military fami-lies recognize exactly how long they will be situated at their current location depending on the length of deployment. In addition, families will need to know if the next tour of duty for those involved with the military will be overseas. If so, you will have to wait to receive your pet after a six-month quarantine session. Once the pet passes the quarantine criteria, families will be able to enjoy the company of their newest addition.
Another point of concern is
safety from illness. To ensure this, all vaccinations must be current for the pet(s). There may be additional requirements that are contingent on where the family will be stationed next.
Families also need to seriously consider who will take on the responsibility for taking good care of the pet(s) in case you plan to move or an urgent deployment is issued. Pets rely solely on the own-ers so prior mea-sures should be taken even if your time away from home is brief.
Pets can be your family’s new best friend. They’re very comforting for children, particularly when a stressful move arises. Your newest four-legged companion provides a
trusting and comforting relationship for kids when they arrive at new schools and communities. During this time it’s also imperative that families realize it can be affecting
and distressing for everyone when you have to give up
the pet or if it must go through quarantine. The Kitsap Humane Society, for exam-ple, has witnessed a high number of cases where pets were surrendered by military families.
The Kitsap Humane Society
provides options for families looking to
embrace this time with the help of a furry friend. The first option to consider is becoming fos-ter parents for animals rather than a traditional adoption.
When pets are fostered, families
may keep the animal temporarily and then have the pet moved to the next foster family or possibly, long-term adopter.
This provides both individuals and families with a valued com-panionship with their animals. This option may be the most suitable unless members in the military and their families know they will be stationed here for a long period of time.

The 2011 PSNS & IMF career fair kicked off the morning of Jan. 28 at the Kitsap Pavilion in Bremerton. More than 7,500 job seekers attended this year’s fair.
The annual career fair is one of the few opportunities civilians have for finding out what the shop-trades do inside the controlled industrial area of a naval repair facility.
Interested job seekers had the
opportunity to quiz professionals and check out visual displays and equip-ment used inside the shops.
Apprentice school instructors were on site, as are managers from the shops. Graduate apprentices are extremely adept at conveying how it all works and their firsthand experi-ence is vital to the attendees, young and old alike.
An apprenticeship at PSNS & IMF is a highly respected four-year program with three phases and eight to nine academic quarters. Students experi-
ence both classroom work and on the job training and advance as they prog-ress in the program.
At graduation they receive a journey-man certification by Department of Labor and the Department of Navy. The apprentice graduate ranks often become the future leaders of the Shipyard.
For those not ready for the appren-tice program, the “Helper” program
provides an opportunity to work with skilled tradesmen and learn about the different shops to determine what might be a good fit. A fair number of apprentice positions are filled each year from successful helper program ranks. That can be a big benefit as it gives the new employee a year to become seasoned to a type of work, hours and preference of shop career path they’d like to pursue.
More than two dozen shops and codes were represented during the event along with information on resources available to employees.
“I came here today to find out everything about the shops. I want to see where I can fit in,” said Tara Curtis. “It can be intimidating but everyone has been very helpful.”
TODD Shipbuilding, the U.S. Army, and the Navy Human Resource Service Center were also on hand to explain employment opportunities, as well as representatives from Navy Region Northwest, Port Operations, Naval Facilities NW and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport.
PSNS & IMF plan to hire approxi-mately 500 people throughout the coming year to meet workload demand and positions that become available through attrition.
