MIHSG IS OUTSTANDING The Bridge School Inspectorate, an organisation that has “approval from the Secretary
of State for Education to inspect schools belonging to the Association of Muslim
Schools,” arrived in school early in the Summer term on a one day monitoring visit as
part of the ongoing process to evaluate the school. Having achieved ‘Outstanding’ status in the previous Of-
STED inspection, the purpose of the visit by BSI was to check the progress the school is making. Alhamdulil-
lah, MIHSG was considered to have maintained its ‘Outstanding’ status.
STAFF AND PUPILS ‘LIVE BELOW THE LINE’ “Live Below the Line is an annual anti-poverty campaign, which challenges participants
to feed themselves on the equivalent of the extreme poverty line for five days. The goal
of Live Below the Line is to raise widespread awareness by enabling participants to gain a
small insight into the hardships faced by those that live in extreme poverty.”
This year, several pupils and members of staff from MIHSG took part in the challenge
raising much needed funds for MADE in Europe foundation, an organisation set up to support young Muslims
to help fight global poverty.
Alhamdulillah, the participants combined raised a record breaking £2,855 in five days! Read more about
the challenge and fundraising on pages 4 and 5.
WELCOMING RAMADHAN With the blessed month of Ramadhan falling into the school year for three
weeks, a number of activities have taken place to help pupils to benefit and be
able to use their time effectively. In addition, pupils created decorations and
placed these around school and ‘Ramadhan packs’ were created and distributed to all the pupils and members
of staff in the school. Read more about celebrating Ramadhan at MIHSG on pages 24 and 25.

Ramadhan, the most blessed month in the
Islamic calendar, has this year fallen within the
school year. Given that staff and pupils would be
at school for almost three weeks of Ramadhan,
we therefore decided to make this Ramadhan
extra special in school.
One of the greatest benefits of working or study-
ing at MIHSG is the manner in which staff and
pupils can continue their day to day life without
compromising their deen.
If you decide to take a walk around school, you
will notice things look very different. Thanks to
help and support of 30 pupils from across the
school, hundreds of self made decorations wel-
coming the blessed Ramadhan were placed
around school just before the new moon was
sighted. This included paper chains, lanterns and
bunting. In addition, and probably most im-
portant of all, on the walls of the school corridors
you will find inspiring quotes to keep you moti-
vated throughout Ramadhan as well as personal
targets for this Ramadhan by both staff and pu-
pils.
However, we all know that one of the Sunnah’s
of the Prophet (saw) was to give people gifts, be-
cause gifts helps to increase the love and respect
between one another. Therefore, this Rama-
dhan, 220 Ramadhan packs were designed,
packed and distributed to every pupil and teacher
in the school. The packs consisted of:
An English translation of the Qur’an. Per-
fect for this blessed Ramadhan, because as
much the reward is for reading in Arabic,
understanding the Qur’anic and the words of
Allah are just as important
A set of dates and a bottle of water. As per
the Sunnah, each pack had an odd number of
dates. The traditional way of opening ones
fast.
A ‘make your own tasbih.’ Pupils were given
string and 33 beads in various colours with
the opportunity to create their own tasbih.
This was then to be used during the follow-
ing month for dhikr purposes.
A ‘Ramadhan guide.’ A crucial document
towards having a successful Ramadhan, as
this included a timetable and planning sheet,
various duas that can be recited during dif-
ferent times of the month and the 99 names
of Allah.
Pupils in Year 7 were also given a hijab.
For some of our pupils this will be their first
Ramadhan and possibly a new experience of
wearing a hijab. We hope insha’Allah the
pupils benefited from this.
Pupils in Year 9 and Year 10 were also given
bookmarks to use during their Qur’an recita-
tion.
Each pack was personalised with the pupils’
or staff members’ names.
We pray that insha’Allah this pack benefited eve-
ryone. May Allah accept everyone's intentions,
siyam, qiyam and sujood during this blessed
month. We ask that you remember MIHSG in
your duas. Jazakh’Allah.
PREPARING FOR RAMADHAN AT MIHSG
The ‘Ramadhan Buddy’ scheme, introduced by Miss Kossar, was
to enable pupils and staff to randomly pair with someone else in
the school and encourage one another towards goodness during
this month.
Pupils have been working together to set one another targets,
compete against each other as well as help one another to learn
something new on a daily basis.
For the staff, it has been a little more difficult as due to the se-
crecy of it all, many staff are unsure how their buddy is and are
receiving snippets of messages and gifts in their classrooms, cars
and pigeon holes.
May Allah accept everyone’s intentions. Ameen.

Friday 11th July marked the 19 years anni-
versary of the massacre of 8000 Muslim men
in Srebrenica, Bosnia.
The memorial included contributions from
distinguished speakers, a short memorial
film and prayers. Four mothers from Sre-
brenica who lost sons and relatives in the
terrible events shared their stories, in paying
tribute to the victims but also reminded us
all of the need to remain vigilant in tacking
intolerance and hatred within any commu-
nity and society.
The event was attended by many leaders
from the community including the Mayor of
Blackburn, Councillor Noordad Aziz and the
recently elected MEP representative to the
EU Paliament Julie Ward.
We should honour the mothers and victims
of Srebrenica for their struggle, courage and
sacrifice. 19 years later and some mothers are
still not able to find the bones of their loved
ones. One mother buried only the head of
her son. May Allah(swt) grant patience and
the reward of nothing less than Jannatul
Firdous for their sufferings.
Pupils from year 8 and 9 attended the me-
morial at Blackburn cathedral. The event
started with prayers from both the Christian
and Muslim communities, with a beautiful
recitation of Surah Fatiha echoing across the
cathedral. This was followed by heartfelt and
emotional accounts of mothers who in one
day had lost their husbands, multiple sons,
fathers and uncles.
Savera Noor in Year 9 had the opportunity
to present a bouquet of flowers to one of the
mothers.
“It was an
honour for
me to present flower to the mothers who
went through so much after losing their sons
and husbands. I wish no one else has to suf-
fer through the pain these people did. May
Allah grant all our mothers jannah. It was an
inspirational and heart touching event.” –
Savera Noor
“It was a really emotional trip but it was
worthwhile. We learnt so much from it and
some of the facts shocked us. Although we
were inspired by some the courage of these
women.
Maseelah Shahzada – Year 9
“The stories that we heard from the mothers
were very emotional and heart warming.
When I returned home i told the stories of
these women to my parents, I felt blessed
that Allah has not put us through their expe-
rience. Alhamdulilah,”

Throughout the last
two weeks of Rama-
dan in school, along
with many other Ramadan activities hap-
pening pupils participated in a Ramadan
deen intensive programme, a separate pro-
gramme from normal lessons was organised
with a series of talks and workshops and
intense Islamic studies took place for a week
for pupils to seek extra knowledge and im-
plement it during the month of Ramadan.
Year 7 and 8 participated from 7th -11th July
and year 9-10 on 14th-18th July. Pupils
have had talks on Tafseer, concentrating on
Surah At-takathur and Surah Ma’un by Br
Nasar Ishfaq, Hadith, Seerah by Mrs Malek
Junior, Purification and using social media in
Ramadan by Mrs Shaheen, Shama’il looking
in detail on the description of the Prophet
(saw) and looking at the etiquettes of dua by
Abu Sondes and seeking knowledge.
Pupils were also given an opportunity to
learn as many duas that will help them
through many different situations in life as
well as making dua for their parents as
learning about Tahajjud prayer and Salatul
Istikhara. They were given personal booklets
with a list of duas that they can refer to
whenever in the future too. Pupils also
learnt Surah Mulk during this week.
“Throughout the whole week I have gained so
much knowledge and I am very grateful to have
this opportunity. The deen intensive programme
has opened up my eyes to understand why educa-
tion is so important. Seeking knowledge about
Islam is very important. As Allah says in the
Quran “It is only those who have knowledge
among servants who fear Allah.” (35:28)
Bismah Ajmal -8 Hasanah
“The Ramadan deen intensive programme was
very interesting because we walked in with a
blank head but we came out with lots of infor-
mation. The teachers and guests helped us to real-
ise how we can become better Muslims by learn-
ing about the seerah, memorising duas and surah
al Mulk. As well as learning about the shama’il
which helped us imply daily sunnahs in our life.
It was very educational and beneficial. inshaAllah
our teachers will be rewarded!”
Hafsa Qasim - 8 Hasanah
JazakAllahkhair to all the guests who attend-
ed school to deliver various informative ses-
sions, and Mrs Malek, Mrs Shaheen and Mrs
Malek junior. May Allah(Swt) bless them
and reward them for imparting their
knowledge in this blessed month and may it
be they receive the reward of Sadaqah
Jariayh and Jannatul Firdous.
“The deen intensive course has inspired us to
learn more about our religion”

RAMADHAN DEEN INTENSIVE PROGRAMME
MIHSG has been kindly asked to volunteer and take part
in Radio Ramadan. This initiative has been set up by the
British Muslim Heritage Centre for Ramadan. Pupils
have been invited from MIHSG to host their own show
every Tuesday at 2pm -3pm covering various different
topics from school life to making the most of Ramadan,
to who their role models are. The MIHSG radio pro-
gramme takes place every Tuesday on 87.7fm during Rama-
dan. It has been a great opportunity for pupils to develop
pupils’ confidence, knowledge and communication skills.
“It was a great thing to be part of and it’s a really good op-
portunity to try something different. The whole thing alto-
gether was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I
am looking forward to go again next week and it truly is an
experience that will never be forgotten.”

As part of Year 11 leaving MIHSG for pas-
tures new, a final Qiyaam was organised,
entitled: “Preparing for the future and pre-
paring for the Akhirah.”
The purpose was to give the young ladies an
opportunity before Ramadan after their last
GCSE exam to spend the night in school
with their teachers and year group in the
worship of Allah.
A programme was organised with talks,
workshops and different fard and nafl iba-
dah in preparation for Ramadan and the
future.
A talk on preparing for the future and the
Akhirah was delivered by Abu Sondes
which was loved by all the pupils, as well as
a reminder on reading Surah Mulk by Mrs
Ahmed.
Pupils were also given an opportunity in
groups to make their own personal tasbeeh
(prayer bead) for Ramadan. A workshop
was delivered by Mrs S Malek on setting
targets for Ramadan and keeping good ties
amongst each other.
It was a great evening to end by praying
Tahajjud in congregation and reading
Quran together and catching up.
We pray that it was a memorable evening
with lasting memories and reminders for
years to come insha’Allah.
We wish year 11 all the best in their future
endeavours and duas for their future.
Thank you and JazakAllahkhair to all the
staff who contributed towards the delivery
and preparation of the Qiyaam as well as
staying overnight in school.

ISLAMIC GEOMETRIC PATTERNS WORKSHOP
One of the main parts of studying PSHCE at
MIHSG, is understanding the importance of
public institutions and the roles that they
play in the lives of the local community.
Therefore, with Year 9 studying public
institutions and this coinciding wth the
refurbishment of Manchester Central Li-
brary, a visit was organised for pupils to
have a look around the new library, read
through the archives and appreciate the
architecture.
In addition, a crucial part of living in Man-
chester for many is visiting Manchester
Cathedral. A beautiful building, which was
recently visited by the Queen.
“During the visit we saw the different areas
as well as developing an understanding of
the art that is inside the Cathedral and what
it stands for.”
“We found that the Cathedral does a lot of
work with the local community and is quite
expensive to run so needs daily donations.”
More than anything, it was certainly obvi-
ous that for the library, new media and
technology was the way forward. Barely a
book in sight!

It was
that time in the year again
when we have our annual visit
from year 5 pupils from Linden
Road in Denton.
This is an affluent primary school in
Denton and we have had a link with
the school for a few years now.
We have delivered assemblies and
workshops at the school about Islam
and the pupils in Year 5 visit the
school every year and take part in a
full day’s activities on Islam.
Our pupils enjoy having the young-
sters over and teaching them about
Islam.
They prepared fun and interactive
activities for them and the pupils
from Linden Road love attending

This term the Science department
has continued to run a weekly Sci-
ence club for year 7 and 8. We have
been doing a number of activities to
support and increase the pupil’s in-
terest in Science throughout the
whole year. It has been a successful
addition to the extra-curricular ac-
tivities offered by the science de-
partment.
We have looked at the different ele-
ments used in fireworks, flame tests
for identifying different metals, fin-
gerprinting, growing salt crystals
and spending much of the time plan-
ning and preparing the school gar-
den for National science and Engi-
neering week. We have also made
our very own bath bombs and soap
as a homemade gift for Ramadhan or
Eid.
Next year, we hope to have to con-
tinue with our science club and to
regularly update the science notice
board to show our achievements and
upcoming activities.
Watch this space for further news….
SCIENCE CLUB
The Science club girls have been
very busy with harvesting the pro-
duce from the School gardens.
We have successfully grown a varie-
ty of herbs, vegetables including car-
rots, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, rhu-
barb, broad beans and fruits includ-
ing strawberries. We will be donat-
ing our produce to the homeless in
the upcoming weeks.
The girls have continued to regular-
ly maintain the garden through
weeding and have now put down
wood chip to prevent further weeds
coming through. We hope to have
more volunteers next year to help
with the upkeep of the garden.
The garden has also been attracting
much wildlife and insects which the
girls have taken a keen interest in
identifying. Next year, we hope to
add to this with the
introduction of frogs to the pond.
Well done to all
the girls in-
volved for their
hard work and
effort in making
the school gar-
den a great suc-
cess.

The year 10 pupils were away on Work
Experience for two weeks in July 2014.
They had all secured authorised place-
ments with providers of their choice. The
placements included NHS University hos-
pitals, schools, nurseries, Medical Centres,
Care Homes, Retail outlets, Florists, Solici-
tors and Pharmacies to name a few. Three
pupils also completed their placements at
Riding Stables.
The pupils worked alongside various pro-
fessionals and acquired valuable skills dur-
ing their placements. They were able to
feedback to their peers in the final week
and discuss the advantages of experiencing
the ‘world of work’ first hand.
All our pupils received excellent feedback
from their providers and many supervisors
praised MIHGS girls for their excellent
manners, positive attitude and dedication.
Each pupil will receive a Work Experience
Certificate at the start of the next academic
year.

ample feeding the homeless and cooking for them.
It has honestly been an amazing experience so far.
The organisation is run by Chinese women who
support all different walks of life by training them
in language and computing skills.”

STAFF NEWS
We would like to say a fond farewell to Mrs
Moorhouse from the English Department who
covered for two terms and left us at the end of
the last term to return to the comfort of travel-
ling and pottering around the garden.
Avery warm welcome to Mrs Evans who
joined the English department this May, who
is masha’Allah a very experienced teacher and
examiner. The girls have already benefited
from her expertise and insight.
Masha’Allah, we also have some wondergul
news with several new additions to the school
family. Mrs F Khan our school secretary gave
birth to a beautiful little healthy girl in May.
Alhamdulillah both mother and daughter are
doing well.. Not so long after, Mrs Abdi a
member of the Science Department and Head
of Year 8, gave birth to her first child; a little
boy who she named Idrees. Mrs
Parveen, our Islamic Co-
ordinator who has been at the
school for seven years, left for her maternity
leave in the middle of June and alhamdulillah
was blessed with a beautiful boy. We pray that
Allah grants them all health, happiness and
success. May the new-born's always be in the
shade and guidance of Allah.
And finally we have two more farewells;
Mr Handley, the school bursar will be
leaving at the end of this academic year.
Mrs Abdul-Salam from the Science de-
partment who decided due to family
commitment not to return from her ma-
ternity leave. We would to thank them for
their valuable contribution to the life of the
school. Both members of staff will be greatly
missed.
A MESSAGE FROM MRS MOHAMED
Having retired in July 2012, Mrs
Moorhouse had left MIHSG to
spend more time with her family.
Much of it was spent traversing
between Cheshire and Kuwait
(where her husband was working).
Mrs Moorhouse was invited to join
the team once more to cover a
maternity leave in the English
department at the beginning of
the academic year. Intending
to stay for only half a term, she
was surprised to find herself
still at the school in May!
What can we say: she’s fun, sweet
and ultimately a great teacher! She
immersed herself quickly into the
school community again. It was as
if she hadn’t left! The kids love her
and the staff enjoy her company.
A special thank you to a special
teacher. We’ll miss you!
GLAMOUR GIRL
LEAVES US AGAIN!
Miss Hughes, since when did you
want to become a PE teacher?
I knew I wanted to be a PE teach-
er from primary school. I always
helped out in PE lessons and was
always playing sport at break and
lunch.
In primary school did you join
any out of school sport activities.
I was on all the school teams and
went to all the extra sessions in-
cluding netball, football, dance
and rugby.
Who was your inspiration?
My inspiration was my Year 6
teacher. He got involved in every
sport and encouraged everyone to
do their best. Also my dad as he
loves sport and I used to play
badminton and cricket with him.
Which is your favourite sport?
My favourite sport to watch is
football but my favourite sport to
play is netball.
Did you have any other career
plans apart from a PE teacher?
I love animals so it would have
been a vet or working ina rescue
centre. I always liked the idea of
becoming a police officer too.
How many years have you
worked as a PE teacher?
I have been a sport coach since I
was 16 in numerous places but I
have been a teacher for 8 years.
Are you interested in football?
I love, love, love, love, football.
Come on United!
What is your most favourite part
of being a sports teacher?
I love to see children succeed in
life, even by successfully catching
a ball or meeting a new challenge.
I see people develop as a person
socially, personally, mentally and
physically. Sport also keeps you
fit and healthy and you lead a
better life the healthier you are.
How do you find sports day?
I love sports day as it brings eve-
ryone together and shows real
sportsmanship throughout the
day.
Thank you to the Student Council
for putting these questions to-
gether and thank you to Miss
Hughes for answering them!
A very special message of thanks
and appreciation to Mrs S Malek
for her excellent photography skills
over the course of the year.
Alhamdulillah, with Mrs Malek’s
passion for photography, equipped
with her state of the art photog-
raphy equipment, the school has
been able to benefit with some very
professional pictures taken at key
events. For this, we
are eternally grateful.
May Allah reward
you abundantly Mrs
Malek for your sup-
port and ‘never say
no’ attitude. Nothing
is ever too much
trouble for Mrs Malek!
