What impacts most are his chiaroscuros with that virtual strength that has always been present in Rembrandt. But in the particular case of “Noble” it is not about imitation, but of continuity, of a process that is forever in renewal and that is why it persists. It is the survival of art and its true form of expression while at the same time it is dominated. We must all accustom ourselves to seeing its presence in his canvases and sculptures as a demonstration of versatility.Gabriel García Márquez SELECTION OF INDIVIDUAL* AND COLLECTIVE EXHIBITIONS 2009 FIART Art Fair, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 2009 Shanell Gallery, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 2008 Olympic Fine Arts, Beijing, China (Olympic Games) 2008 ArteClasica Art Fair, Buenos Aires, Argentina 2007* Convenio Andrés Bello, Bogota, Colombia 2007 Art Expo New York, New York, USA 2007 Art Miami, Convention Center, Miami, USA 2006 John Green Fina Art, Glasgow, Scotland 2006 Mila Hajjar Gallery, Miami, USA 2006 Francisco de Paula Santander Salon, Colombian Consulate, Miami, USA 2006 The Wirtz Gallery, Miami, USA 2005 Clifton Fine Art, Bristol, England 2005 Expo-Colombia, Miami, USA 2004 Francisco Nader Gallery, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 2003 Latin American Art Museum, Miami, USA 2001 CIMA Gallery, West Palm Beach, USA 2001 Galerie 2000, Montreal, Canada 2000 Festival de Vallenato, Cultural Center, Valledupar, Colombia 1999* Congress of the Republic of Colombia, Bogota, Colombia 1996 Cultural Center, Chía, Colombia 1994 Cultural Center, Cajicá, Colombia 1994 El Chicó Museum, Bogota, Colombia 1993 Second Biennial of Caribbean Art, Corferias, Bogota, Colombia

“THE ART OF MIGUEL DE LA ESPRIELLA – ´NOBLE´”

« Spate of Fish » 50x70cm, 2009

“Spate of Fish” is part of a series of works within the artist´s “Cosmic Vision” started in 2004. It is based on one of Colombia´s long-standing carnival´s – held throughout the country in many different places – which surrounds the moment when huge shoals of fish proceed along the major rivers of the country at certain times of the year bringing bounty and celebration to the villages that neighbor their banks. With its modern style one might be forgiven for thinking that it is a purely abstract expressionist work in the style of Pollock. Nor is it action painting. Nothing could be further from the truth. The works contain within them the identifying elements used by “Noble” to create the evolutionary process in his work and its apparent abstract expressionist background is built up while containing a plethora of simple figurative fish characters that represent the swarming of the shoals as they are caught in the nets of the fishermen – all set against the background of the night sky of his “Cosmic Vision” of which some new works have shown that there is no limit to the creativity of an artist in their prime.

« Song of the Pheonix » 180x161cm, 2006- 2007

“Song of the Phoenix” is a ground breaking work by “Noble”. Apparently leaving his earthbound world behind this artwork forms a group of no more than a handful of paintings created by the artist while in artistic transition several years ago. Distinctly foreign in relation to his Classical works, “Noble” enters into the traditions of the tribal shaman found in various parts of Colombia who experiment the universe in all its dimensions as part of their coca-based rituals. The artworks from this period contain simple animal figures as part of the cosmos just as the stars today form their outlines of the Zodiac. This canvas forms part of the varied “Cosmic Vision” series of artworks.

« Dance In The Countryside »

150x 110 cm, 2004

“Dance in the Countryside” is again based on the many folkloric festivals that are held in Colombia – with around eighteen public holidays a year the country is one which likes to celebrate at every opportunity. Many dances and festivities can be encountered throughout the year in most of the towns and villages. The best known is perhaps the “Barranquilla Carnival” a rival to the carnival in Rio. Painted in the artist´s traditional classical style the artwork evokes a history of days gone by – of a country that was – perhaps having as its essence something that will never really be seen again after the violence of the recent decades. “Noble” presents works from his childhood – from days beyond what his life has perceived as an adult – of innocent times perhaps never to return. Of beauty, sincerity, simplicity when Colombia was a country of villages and villagers and of something that is slowly being lost as the displaced move to the towns and cities swelling their numbers to the millions. The days when man was a part of nature rather than its master or executioner may never be seen or experienced again – except in artworks such as these.
