Big Idea Card

Big Ideas of the Lesson 6, Unit 1

• One important pattern of migration is urbanization, or the movement of people

from rural to urban areas. • The pace of urbanization on Earth has accelerated over time. At the present

time over half of the world’s population lives in urban areas.

• Urbanization offers the opportunity to deliver important services like water, electricity, education, and health care in more efficient ways.

• Urbanization also comes with problems such as air pollution, traffic congestion, slums, poverty, and lack of green space.
