1. Introduction

The Magellan™ 3300HSi high performance imaging scanner is a revolutionary new

bar code scanner from Datalogic ADC. It is the first in-counter scanner in the

Magellan family to use Datalogic’s new Imaging Technology. The result is a bar code

scanner that yields comparable scanning and field-of-view performance of an

omnidirectional single plane laser scanner while adding the benefits of imaging.

Datalogic ADC is now able to offer a scanner that has comparable field-of-view and

depth-of-field performance as its best selling Magellan™ 2300HS laser scanner. The

Magellan 3300HSi scanner also adds significant improvements in reading difficult bar

codes such as truncated, poorly printed and GS1 DataBar™ codes while allowing

both presentation style scanning and high speed sweep scanning. In addition, the

Magellan 3300HSi has the optional ability to read all common 2D bar codes.

Additionally, the Magellan 3300HSi scanner has many capabilities that are software

enabled so the scanner offers excellent flexibility and investment protection by being able

to be upgraded after installation.

2. Positioning Statements

2.1. Family Positioning

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner is a new member of the Datalogic ADC Magellan

family of fixed position bar code readers, which is the number one brand in the

world. The Magellan name is the leading brand in sales because this product

family combines outstanding performance in high volume scanning environments,

renowned quality and reliability, and differentiated features which provide the user

with quantifiable benefits.

All Magellan products must pass the most rigorous quality and reliability testing in

the industry, which assures users they are getting scanners that will provide years

of dependable service in harsh environments.

Magellan scanners are designed to not only be the highest performing scanners in the world, but also the most accurate.

Scanning speed and impressive scanning volumes are combined to ensure the best performance available.

Each Magellan scanner is also designed with features that fully differentiate it from competitive scanners. From the very first bar

code scanner in a small retail store in 1974 thru 2010, Datalogic ADC has been a leader in the retail industry and has studied

retail store usage environments and requirements for over 35 years. The Magellan brand includes features which provide

benefits to the retailer that are real, quantifiable and that currently no competitors can match.

2.2. Product Positioning

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner is a new addition to the Magellan family of scanners and is positioned at the high end of the

single plane, in-counter category in terms of scanning speed and scan volume. It is comparable to the Magellan 2300HS scanner

in terms of 1D scanning performance, while adding the capability to be configured with 2D bar code symbology reading.

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner is targeted for the same market segments as the Magellan 2300HS scanners, but also addresses

evolving requirements for those markets. These primary target markets include:

Specialty Retail Stores

Drug Stores

Pharmacies

Do-it-Yourself (DIY) Stores

Convenience Stores

Grocery Stores

Because of its scanning performance and small size, the Magellan 3300HSi scanner is also an excellent choice to be used in

high volume checkout where space and/or budgets do not permit the installation of a bi-optic scanner.

3. Product Value

3.1. Value Statement

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner is the world’s first imaging based, in-counter, omnidirectional scanner that combines the

performance of laser scanners with the ability to greatly improve the scanning of hard-to-read bar codes such as truncated

(short), out-of-spec, poorly printed and GS1 DataBar™ codes. The Magellan 3300HSi scanner demonstrates extreme reliability

by using a solid-state design that does not require laser modules or spinning motors – two of the highest failure rate components

in omnidirectional laser scanners. Finally, because many of the features of the Magellan 3300HSi scanner are software based,

the scanner can be upgraded to add additional capabilities after the initial installation, protecting the user’s investment and

lengthening the useful life of the scanner.

3.2. Product Description

High Performance

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner uses new imaging technology and software developed by Datalogic ADC which allows it to

perform comparably to current laser-based omnidirectional single plane scanners. Because of its imaging technology, its

performance on hard-to-read bar codes is far superior to any other single plane scanner currently available. This increases the

first pass read rates of difficult-to-scan bar codes, yielding a performance gain for the retailer’s checkout and increasing

operational efficiency and customer service.

This new scanner also adds the optional ability to scan all of the most popular 2D bar codes which are used for emerging

applications requiring the inclusion of more data in smaller spaces. Perhaps most important is the ability of the Magellan

Page 5: Mig Magellan 3300hsi Scanner

REVISION B Page 5 of 17

3300HSi scanner to upgrade software in order to add additional capabilities, such as 2D scanning which protects the retailer’s

initial investment and extends the life of the scanner.

Reliability

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner inherits the Magellan family’s renowned reliability and quality. The design has been thoroughly

tested and has passed all of the reliability testing required of any new Magellan product. These tests include high resistance to

electronic static discharge (ESD), dust and liquid incursion, temperature extremes and other tests. One test is nicknamed the ‘big

gulp test’ and a 32 oz cup of liquid is poured over the top of the unit to simulate spillage in a convenience store environment.

Because this new scanner is based on new imaging and software that utilizes this technology, it does not require the laser or the

motor that are currently in the Magellan 2300HS scanner. While the Magellan 2300HS scanner is the most reliable in-counter

single plane scanner in the world, the Magellan 3300HSi scanner is estimated to increase the mean time between failures by

about 60% (50% duty cycle).

Differentiating Features

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner has many features not found on current laser-based single plane scanners and features not

found on any other scanner. One of the key new feature areas is software management and maintenance because the Magellan

3300HSi scanner offers multiple methods to load new or make changes to existing software configuration files and application

firmware.

The scanner allows a PC using the Magellan On-Screen Programming tool to be connected via a USB port. This allows the user

the ability to load, change or upload configuration files and the ability to update application firmware to newer releases. The user

can also create configuration files and write them to a MicroSD card and then insert the card into the Magellan 3300HSi scanner.

The scanner will then auto-run the loading of the new configuration. In addition, the scanning software can be upgraded in the

field by installing new licensed software features such as an upgrade to 2D scanning. Diagnostic information and unit status

information can be captured to the PC or to a MicroSD card. The Magellan 3300HSi scanner is also capable of remote support

and remote upgrades if the host terminal is capable of passing configuration or application files.

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner has an auxiliary RS-232 port for connection of an optional handheld scanner or for integrating the

unit to an EAS controller. Other features include the ability to capture images and write the images to the MicroSD card or send

them to the host terminal. A large, green ‘good read’ indicator assures that good scans are seen by cashiers, customers,

supervisory personnel and overhead video surveillance cameras.

In short, the Magellan 3300HSi scanner is a breakthrough in-counter scanner that offers exceptional performance and reliability

with innovative features which provide outstanding value to the customer.

Bar Code Reading From a Cell Phone or PDA The Magellan 3300HSi scanner, like the Magellan 3200VSi scanner, has the

ability to read mobile coupons from cell phones. This cell phone reading

“mode” can be activated by a software command from a host terminal.

See „Note A’ below.

Page 9: Mig Magellan 3300hsi Scanner

Datalogic ADC, Inc. Confidential Proprietary Information MIG-MAGELLAN3300HSi-EN

REVISION B Page 9 of 17

Note A: Cell phone reading mode allows the Magellan 3300HSi scanner to read bar codes from cell phone displays. This

capability can be activated by a command (to be defined) sent by the POS application from the host terminal. The command can

either toggle (turn on and off) cell phone reading mode or can turn it on for one read and then revert to normal scanning mode.

Cell phone mode can also be toggled by a remote button that is a sellable cable option. This button plugs into the Auxiliary Port

Like the Magellan 3200VSi scanner, the Magellan 3300HSi scanner also has an auto-cell phone mode. However, because some

retail environments have very bright overhead lighting it is possible, under certain circumstances, that the Magellan 3300HSi

scanner will interpret these bright lighting conditions as an illuminated cell phone display and enter cell phone reading mode

without a cell phone present. This could affect overall scanning performance. Auto cell phone mode should only be used after

successful testing in the actual use environment.

4.5. Elevator Pitches

(An elevator pitch is a brief overview of an idea for a product, service or project. This is intended to be delivered verbally and is

called an 'elevator pitch' because it can be delivered in the time span of an elevator ride (about thirty seconds). The elevator

pitch is simply intended to capture the attention of a potential customer. If you achieve that, the odds are good that you'll get a

chance to present your business idea in more detail.)

Can you imagine if I could provide you with an in-counter scanner that reads normal 1D bar codes as well as your current

scanner but vastly improves reading of all those problem bar codes in your store including the new required GS1 DataBar™

codes? What if this scanner could also read 2D bar codes that are becoming prevalent or will be before the useful life of the

scanner is over? How about if I told you that it could read bar codes, both 1D and 2D, from cell phones? What if you didn’t have

to buy every capability today but could upgrade the scanner with new software features at a later time? What if I told you that this

scanner has NO moving parts and significantly improves reliability over the current leader in that category?

If I told you all these things, wouldn’t you just have to allow me to demonstrate these great benefits to you? And wouldn’t you

insist that we start a store trial as soon as possible? When can we start?

*Note: This adapter cable can be used with some older Magellan 2300HS cables if the customer does not want to install new

cables. These are some, but not all of the RS-232 cables as well as IBM 46XX cables used with the Magellan 2300HS scanner.

This adapter will not work with any USB cables. Please check with tech support or product management to verify the

compatibility with previous RS-232 cables.

**Note: This remote button is a sellable cable option and allows for triggering the manual cell phone mode or the manual image

capture mode when a MicroSD card is present in the scanner.

***Note: This cable allows more than one optional connection to the scanner’s Auxiliary Port. It allows the user to connect any

two of the following: EAS controller, handheld scanner, and/or the remote button.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will the Magellan 2300HS scanner be discontinued?

A: No. The Magellan 2300HS scanner will continue to be available. It is the most successful single plane horizontal scanner in

the world and our intention is to continue to make it available to our customers. Many customers are in the middle of large

roll-outs or are very successfully deploying the Magellan 2300HS scanner and Datalogic ADC will take no actions that will

jeopardize this business. At some point in time if demand shifts significantly to the Magellan 3300HSi scanner, Datalogic will

evaluate the lifecycle plans for the Magellan 2300HS scanner.

Q: It seems that the power supply for the new Magellan 3300HSi scanner is different than the power supply for the

Magellan 2300HS scanner. Why is that?

A: Power supply regulations and laws governing construction, components and efficiency continue to rapidly evolve in various

countries around the world. It is extremely costly to maintain a wide variety of certifications for power supplies in various

countries. To help minimize this and to support the supply chain, including our partners, we are currently offering a single

power supply (brick type) for the Magellan 3300HSi scanner. The cord that plugs into the power supply and runs to the wall

outlet is country/region specific.

Q: Is it possible to use an old Magellan 2300HS power supply with the new Magellan 3300HSi scanner?

A: The old power supplies have not been certified for use with the Magellan 3300HSi scanner as a system. This means that the

old power supplies were certified and the new Magellan 3300HSi scanner is certified, but not together as a system. If a

customer wants to test the compatibility of the existing power supply with the new Magellan 3300HSi scanner, it would be their

responsibility to obtain any necessary governmental certifications they feel they would require.

Q: What about cables? Are the cables new for the Magellan 3300HSi scanner?

A: Yes, virtually all cables have been changed. The main reason for this is the Magellan 2300HS scanner has a power jack on

the scanner and the Magellan 3300HSi scanner does not. Removing this power jack increases reliability of the main board

and reduces the footprint of the scanner. However, any interface that requires a power supply now has a power outlet jack on

the cable itself, therefore the vast majority of cables are new. Prices of the new cables are either the same or less than the

existing Magellan 2300HS cables.

Q: The Magellan 3300HSi scanner currently has two software options: either 1D scanning only or a 1D and 2D option.

How can customers upgrade to the 2D option?

A: If a customer does not currently require the need to scan 2D bar codes, they can purchase a scanner model that does not

include that capability for slightly less than the price of the 1D and 2D models. They may choose to upgrade their software at

a later date. Datalogic ADC will sell the upgrade licenses. For example, a customer that has 50 1D scanners currently

installed can order a MicroSD card with 50 2D upgrade licenses. As they install the upgrade into each scanner, the number of

upgrade licenses on each MicroSD card is reduced by one. It is important to be aware whether or not a customer might need

the 2D capability in the future.

8. Summary

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner combines the best attributes of a laser scanner such as sweep speeds, field-of-view and depth-of-field

with the best attributes of imaging scanners such as 2D bar code reading, outstanding poor label reading performance and the ability to

capture images.

The Magellan 3300HSi scanner demonstrates extreme reliability by using a solid-state design that does not require laser modules or

spinning motors – two of the highest failure rate components in omnidirectional laser scanners.

Finally, because most of the features of the Magellan 3300HSi scanner are software based, the scanner can be upgraded to add

additional capabilities after the initial installation protecting the user’s investment and lengthening the useful life of the scanner.

Datalogic ADC is proud to offer the Magellan 3300HSi scanner with the highest performance, reliability and innovative features that

have made the Magellan brand of scanners the number one best selling fixed scanner brand in the world.
