What does a midwife do?
Care for women and their babies from the beginning of pregnancy to at least ten days after birth, and maybe more
Prepare care plans to include ante- and post-natal visit
Support mothers’ choices – place and type of birth, infant feeding, family planning
Care during labour and birth
Visit women after the birth; use clinical and caring skills to monitor both mother and baby

• A caring and respectful partnership approach to women’s needs and their choices
• Knowledge of the biology and physiology of reproduction and of factors that are important for the health and well-being of mothers, babies, families
• Knowledge of the social and cultural factors influencing the life and health choices of women, their families and the maternity services
• An insight into the complex emotional and psychological needs of mothers and their families and how best to respond to them
• Clinical skills which ensure that women receive safe, appropriate and supportive care that is WOMAN-CENTRED.

Year 1: Introduction to the Delivery of Professional Midwifery Practice
Year 2: Developing an Identity as professional midwife
Year 3: Developing Professional Autonomy and working as a midwife
Structured in interrelated themes (Applied Biological Science, Fundamental Aspects of care, Psychology, Sociology and Public Health, Professional Nursing and Midwifery Knowledge, personal and academic development, IT and research)

Entry Requirements
Unless studying towards an Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject, all applicants must have 5 GCSEs including Mathematics and English Language at A*- C.
• Typical offers require one of the following:
• 'A' Level: 320 UCAS tariff points from three A2 subjects • IB: 33 • Access to HE Diploma: Pass in a QAA recognised Access to HE Diploma in a
Nursing, Midwifery, Health or Social Care subject. Nutrition or Paramedic Studies will not be considered - full award (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at Level 3 including 27 credits at distinction and 15 credits at Level 2. This must include Mathematics and English Language GCSE equivalent passed at first attempt, if not already achieved.

Course summary
Postgraduate Diploma/MSc Midwifery (78 week shortened course for
nurses)
78 weeks over three semesters. Start dates in February and September.
Salaried course funded by the NHS
Applicants should hold a lower second class honours degree or equivalent
Applicants must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as
adult nurses and have at least six months’ clinical experience
