Midterm Project

In order to first pick a song for my project, I listened to my iPod on shuffle, brainstorming aesthetic ideas for each song. When this song began playing, it cut deep into my soul and heart. By my favorite band, My Morning Jacket, Golden is not your typical love song as Jim James (the lead singer) has a unique story telling ability. The first 2 verses are obviously about touring. Images of the road, watching the audience arrive, followed by the line, "the lights go out it begins". This influenced the first picture, as there’s a long shot of Kirkwood with people, showing a stretch of road that the human eye can’t see the end of; I wanted it to seem endless. The song then mentions bars and roadhouses, a staple of any young mans touring itinerary. I wanted a picture of a bar, but this building caught my eye with its attractive neon lights but old, uninviting building structure (kind of similar to a bar). In the next verse its seems like he's talking about an intimate relationship and it sounds as if he is in love for the first time. When I came across the yellow tree on campus I was immediately enthralled. Not only was it a beautiful shot, the sun was shining so perfectly on the tree to evoke a feeling of happiness or “finally being where you need to be.” The final verse serves to tie the song together. So far the song has covered the ups and downs of touring and the beauty of new love. Now Jim James combines the two. Although touring takes him from his significant other, she has reassured him that she will stay by his side, and that she will wait for him for as long as his drive to create music is present, regardless of the outcome or level of success. When I saw the “castle” building, I thought of the line he mentions falling apart or being a millionaire, and the clock on the front made it take on a whole new meaning. I felt that the building was saying, “the true prize, the true success, is being together, and no amount of success or failure will change that.” He ends the song singing “on heaven’s golden shore we’ll lay our heads,” which is the only thing I could think of when sitting in front of the golden fountain while it was off. It’s not literally an entrance to heaven, but it depicts “my heaven.” That’s a beautiful sentiment, and I tried to convey these feelings and emotions through my pictures. Once I interpreted the lyrics, I planned out all my shots. I know the campus fairly well, so I tried to choose places that would allow me to be creative, but still follow the aesthetic and interpretation ideas in my head.

In order to first pick a song for my project, I listened to my iPod on shuffle,

Watchin' a stretch of road, miles of light explode. Driftin' off a thing i'd never done before Watchin' a crowd roll in. out go the lights it begins. A feelin' in my bones i never felt before... Mmm... people always told me. that bars are dark and lonely And talk is often cheap and filled with air. Sure sometimes they thrill me But nothin' could ever chill me. Like the way they make the time just disappear Feelin' you are here again. hot on my skin again. Feelin good a thing i'd never known before What does it mean to feel? Millions of dreams come real A feelin' in my soul i'd never felt before... mmm... And you always told me. No matter how long it holds me if it falls apart Or makes us millonaires. you'll be right here forever. We'll go thru this thing together And on heaven's golden shore we'll lay our heads
