Administrator’s Message by Secondary Principal Carol Reilly

We’re off to a great start this year at the secondary. The staff worked hard over the summer working on new curriculum

and to make preparations for the year. It’s been nice seeing the students again and catching up with them after the summer

break.

As the year is getting underway, I want to make sure that parents and guardians are aware of the many supports that are in

place to help your student(s) to be successful.

RTI (Response to Intervention) time is scheduled nearly every day. During this time students can meet with teachers to

get additional help in meeting learning targets. Students can request to meet with teachers, and teachers can assign students to

their rooms during this time.

Remediation Days occur quarterly throughout the school year. Students who have unmet learning targets meet with

teachers individually or in small group settings to get intensive assistance so that targets can be met. Students may also

choose to attend Remediation Days to increase their learning from proficient to mastery.

Eagle Lab is held on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:15 – 5:00 in Ms. Christiansen’s room. Eagle Lab allows students to

work with staff members after school to receive assistance in course work. An activity bus leaves the building at 5:05 and

travels to the district communities for students who stay for Eagle Lab.

Study Tables are held on our early out days from 1:00 – 3:45. This is a new support this year and is designed to provide

support for athletes so they don’t have to miss practices or become ineligible. Athletes are assigned to Study Tables by

teachers if the athletes have unmet learning targets.

PBIS Support Team – As part of our PBIS program, members of the faculty and Grant Wood Personnel, meet weekly to

evaluate student data in the areas of behavior, attendance, and academics. Members of the team also review teacher referrals

and parent referrals. This team works to put individual plans of support in place for students who have been referred or who

are struggling with attendance, behavior, or academics.

Student Success Coordinator – Lennie Miller fills this new position at the secondary level this year. Mr. Miller meets

regularly with students to review PBIS expectations, address attendance issues, and promote positive behavior choices.

School Counselors – Debra Brokaw and Barb Hollinrake are available to meet with students on a variety of issues such as

college and career options, mental health, conflict resolution, scheduling, and academics. Through our counseling department,

students can learn about career opportunities, internships, job shadows, and take the ASVAB test for military entrance and

take ACT practice tests. Newman, our school therapy dog, is also available to assist students in need.

Unified Classroom is our new Learning Management System produced by PowerSchool. Unified Classroom will provide

more information to students and parents regarding classroom learning expectations, practice opportunities, and assessments.

Unified Classroom will provide greater access to classroom content or more information about student progress. If you need

assistance accessing your parent account, please schedule an appointment with Mrs. Reilly.

Parent Teacher Conferences are held twice a year. Our fall conferences will be held on Tuesday, October 23rd

from 4 –

8pm and on Thursday, October 25 from 1:30 – 8pm. This a great opportunity for parents to meet with teachers one on one to

discuss student progress and teacher or parent concerns.

The secondary faculty desires to work with parents to ensure student success, and we want to know when parents and

guardians have concerns. We do ask that if a concern arises regarding a classroom issue, your first point of contact is the

classroom teacher as they are closest to the situation and will have the most accurate information to share. Teachers are

available via email or phone, or they can schedule a face to face

meeting with parents, guardians, and students. (Continued on page 5)

NEWS FROM THE NEST

Remediation Day – October 19 The secondary will be having a Remediation Day for

students in grades 7 – 12 on Friday, October 19. This is a

day for students who are struggling in meeting learning

targets in courses to get extra assistance from teachers and

staff before we move into the second half of the semester.

Teachers will be meeting with students prior to the 19th to

let them know if they need to attend on Remediation Day.

Students who are at proficiency in all learning targets in all

courses will receive a “Gold Letter” indicating that they are

excused for the day. Students who are not yet at proficiency

in their learning targets will receive a “Purple Letter”

indicating that we want them here for Remediation Day to

receive additional assistance. If a student is required to

come for Remediation Day and finishes with learning targets

during the day, he/she is free to leave the building if he/she

has transportation home or live in Wyoming. All students

are required to sign out in the office if they are leaving the

MS/HS building.

Sixth grade students will have a normal day of classes for

Remediation Day.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on

Tuesday, October 23 from 4-8PM and Thursday,

October 25 from 1:30-8PM. Parents can come at a time

that works in their schedule. All teachers will be in

their classrooms. There will be no school on Fri.,

October 26.

PAMPERED CHEF FUNDRAISR Spanish Club members will be selling Pampered Chef

products in October. Profits are used to buy

t-shirts, pay admissions to our annual ski trip, go to a

Mexican Restaurant, etc. If you are not contacted but

wish to purchase contact Jenny Eckhardt, sponsor at

563-488-2292 x 2320 or jeckhardt@midland.k12.ia.us.

National Honor Society application materials are

due to Ms. Kaftan by 3:30PM on October 5.

The induction ceremony is Tuesday, Oct. 16 at

2:30 in the Commons, open to the public.

ATHLETIC BOOSTERS AND POST

PROM PLANNING MEETINGS Post Prom Planning meetings and the Athletic Booster meetings will be held on the same night back to back in hopes of getting more parent participation. Please

join them if you can on October 10 starting at 6PM with Boosters in the HS Commons.

Middle School Dance Friday, November 9 from 6:30-9:00pm in cafeteria for students in grades 6-8, sponsored by middle school student council. Completed and signed permission form required for admission to the dance.

HONORING OUR VETERANS

The MHS National Honor Society will be sponsoring

a Veteran's Day Assembly in the high school

gymnasium in Wyoming on Friday, November 9 at

11:00am. The community is invited to attend. If

anyone has a picture of a Veteran they would like

included in the slide show, please email picture,

name, dates served and in what division, to

skaftan@midland.k12.ia.us by Fri., Nov. 2.

that are open are the South Activities Entrance by the PPF.

The west doors, main doors and all other doors on the East

and North sides are locked.

Box Tops for Education

Welcome back to school, parents! My name is Pam Lehrman and I’m thrilled to be our school’s Box Tops for Education™ Coordinator. Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to help earn

cash for our school. Each one is worth 10¢ for our

school! Just look for the pink Box Top on hundreds of products. All you have to do is clip them and send them to school. Last school year, we earned $1,132.30 for our school from Box Tops and used the money for field trips. This school year, our goal is to earn $1,500.00! Please send all your Box Tops in soon! Box Tops do have an expiration date, so we want to make sure we get them sent in before they expire. Please put them in a baggie or envelope with your child’s name and grade. We are having a contest to see which class can collect the most Box Tops by December 15

th.

MMHS PARENTS

ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND

On Thursday, October 25th

, during the parent-

teacher conferences, parents will be able to

tour the “What You Don’t See” trailer which

will be parked near the main entrance of

MMHS. The trailer is designed to simulate a

typical teenager’s bedroom, completed with all

the paraphernalia and imagery one would

expect to see but possibly not understand from

today’s younger culture.

In the room, visitors will learn the meanings of

signs, symbols & clothing, common hiding

spots and other precursors that can be a tip to

otherwise unsuspecting parents.

There is no cost to view the trailer and

members of ASAC and law enforcement will

be on hand to educate parents and to provide

resources. The trailer is intended for adults

only.

If the October 25th

date does not work for you,

you can attend one of the other events in Jones

County on October 22 at Monticello Middle

School from 4-8PM or on October 23 at

Anamosa Middle School from 4-8PM.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Senior Parents: If your student is even considering going to college, you will need to complete the FAFSA. This is now done earlier and you can start on these October 1st! Below is a link with locations that you can attend and they will help you for FREE! Some places take appointments as well if that is easier.

The following locations will host FAFSA Completion Events at part of FAFSA Ready Iowa throughout the months of October 2018 through March 2019. You will need your tax information from 2017 to complete this process. As dates are scheduled, they will be listed below: www.icansucceed.org/fafsareadyia (click on events to see the locations)

* The Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) has nine Student Success Centers that will offer FAFSA completion assistance as part of FAFSA Ready Iowa. Each center has appointments available and can be scheduled at www.icansucceed.org/apt

October is College Application Month! During this time, seniors will be encouraged and provided with resources to apply for different post-secondary education options. Ms. Hollinrake is available to meet with seniors and navigate through this process.

Senior Year is an exciting time! Classes, sports, extra-curricular, employment AND planning for life after high school. Set yourself up for success by implementing the "2-hour rule". Schedule 2 hours every week to work on your post-secondary planning. This time could be working on college/trade school applications, scholarship search, writing your personal statement, etc. Having the 2-hour rule as part of your routine will encourage you to work on these important tasks over time.

Time for Applications and Post-Secondary Planning! No matter where your path leads you, this is the time to start working toward your goals. Whether you plan on attending a college/university, trade school, joining the military, starting an apprenticeship, joining the workforce, or participating in a gap year, set yourself up for success! 1. Develop a list of qualities that are important to you for life after high school (location, program, size, cost, culture, etc.). 2. Find schools/placements that meet these qualities. It is important to find the right "Fit" for you based upon qualities important to you. Create a list! If your path is college/trade schools, make sure your list contains reach schools, match schools, and safe schools. 3. Gather information needed for applications. This information includes dates/deadlines, letter of recommendation forms, transcript information, Common Application accounts, etc. 4. Set yourself goals and get to work! Juniors

If you are interested in doing an internship spring semester, see Mrs. Brokaw. Applications are due October 25th at 2:00.

You should be meeting with college and career representatives who visit MMHS. These individuals are responsible for admission decisions. Start to notice qualities of colleges or careers that are important to you. If you plan to go to a four year college, you will need to take the ACT's in the spring.

If after meeting with a teacher, you do not believe the issue has been resolved to your satisfaction, please feel free to

make contact with the building principal, Ms. Reilly. As with teachers, she is available via email, phone, or a scheduled

meeting. Mr. Tuetken, the district superintendent, is available to work with concerns should parents and guardians still feel

the issue is not resolved after meeting with Ms. Reilly.

Finally, if after working with the teacher, principal, and superintendent, parents and guardians are welcome to contact

members of the Midland School Board to discuss building concerns.

We’re looking forward to a great school year and working closely with our families to help all our students be successful.
