Middletown Quarterly Update Town News and Information January 2018 A MESSAGE FROM THE BURGESS Map - Proposed Memar Property Annexation —————————————————————————————-- 2018 Election The 2018 election is just around the corner on April 2, 2018. This year we have three (3) commissioner seats up for election. If you are interested in running for a seat, the Nominating Convention will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 7:00pm. at the Municipal Center. Anyone wishing to run must be at least 21 years of age, reside within the corporate limits for at least one year immediately preceding their election, and be a qualified voter of Middletown. Voter Registration If you wish to vote in the 2018 Municipal Election you must be registered by Friday, March 16, 2018. You may pick-up the Maryland Voter Registration Application at the Municipal Center if you need to register. If you are already registered to vote in the General Election you do not need to register unless you just recently moved to Middletown. If you moved from another city/town in Maryland you must inform the Frederick County Election Board of your new address. You can reach the Frederick County Election Board at 301.600.8683. Election Judges Needed We are looking for Election Judges for the upcoming Election on Monday, April 2, 2018. If you are interested in serving as an Election judge please contact Ann Griffin at [email protected] or 301.371.6171 ext. 101. Here is to a Happy New Year and hopes for a prosperous 2018! Paence is one of the resoluons we should have for the new year. We have at least 18 more months of the SHA streetscape construc- on project. Some work will connue over the winter--weather perming. Storm drain work, sidewalk, curb and guer work could take place all winter long. Next spring the project intensity will ratchet up to include road paving and waterline replacement. This next year much of the work will take place in our downtown. In the end the project will improve our roads, safety and appearance—it just takes me and tolerance to get there! We have a proposed annexaon in front of us now. The annexaon is proposing adding 94 acres located north of the county park to our town. The addion of 148 Acve-Adult (55+) homes and a senior center for use by the residents of this development and other Middletown seniors are included in the proposal. Stay informed and view our website to gain more knowledge about this proposal. One of the reasons for considering this annexa- on is to have some slow, planned growth to generate revenue for our budgets, especially the water and sewer budget. For example, the addion of homes (20 per year) in Middletown Glen on Green Street allowed for us to NOT increase in our water and sewer charges for this year and make some significant improvements to our system. Community is important to me and to our Commissioners. That is why we have a Main Street Middletown designaon. It is why we promote and sponsor acvies like Christmas in the Valley, Scarecrow Walk, Memorial Day in the Park, Green Expo and the Heritage Fesval. The value of these acvies is to bring together long-me residents with new residents. I think we have been successful and there is more work to do. Please get involved in your community, shop at our businesses and aend these events. If you do, you too will catch the spirit of our wonderful small town.

The Middletown Planning Commission continues to be busy reviewing proposed developments in the Town. Copies of the plans associated with these developments are available for viewing on the town’s website under Planning and Zoning at www.middletown.md.us or in the Town offices. Cross Stone Commons – located on the west side of Middletown Parkway at the intersection with US Route 40-A (Old National Pike) with 35,357 square feet ± of commercial space and 219 parking spaces. The development currently includes a stand-alone CVS/Pharmacy and a building that includes a Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins, with Harmony Nail Salon opening in January and Cinco de Mayo Mexican restaurant under construction. Ultimately the property will have businesses and restaurants located in four separate buildings. Middletown Glen – located on the north side of East Green Street just west of the Middletown School Complex, a Neo-Traditional Residential development on ~24 acre property. The builder, Ryan Homes, has already sold two dozen of the 81 single-family dwelling lots. Richland Golf Course – the owner has submitted a site plan for an indoor driving range structure that would be located where the current driving range is. Chesterbrook/Franklin Commons – to be located on the corner of Broad and Franklin Streets will be 18 multi-family townhouse dwellings in five buildings. No word on when construction might begin. Miller Property – located on East Main Street (old Ingalls Property) will be redeveloped as a restaurant and indoor market. The Middletown Planning Commission meets on the third Monday of the month and also the Wednesday preceding that Monday meeting in a workshop setting. Both meetings begin at 7:00pm. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the meetings.
