Marketing The Group promotes product to the retailer through a group brochure produced six times per annum as well as the use by individual members companies, “extra pages”, leaflets and flyers.

Beer Keg Beers, Lagers & Cask Ales. 50% of NDD Member’s turnover is in this category and is well over £155 million. Cask Ale is promoted via an annual Calendar. The Group now does over 90,000 barrels of cask ale annually, and is currently growing at 8% year on year, whilst the Market has declined by -4%.

Cider Over 6% of the Group’s turnover, accounts for more than £19m.

Wine The group is currently redefining its Wine Strategy, 17 members are members of the Society of Vintners, previously known as the N.W.B.G. Wine accounts for 18% of turnover which is over £56m and is seen as an expanding market within the group and growing by 26%.

Soft Drinks 14% of the Group’s turnover, over £43m, is in Soft Drinks and Water, which is growing at 15% year on year. The group continues to develop this category with supplier support.

Spirits 12% of the Group’s turnover, £37m, is in the Spirit, PPS, Shots etc category. Again NDD are keen to increase this part of the business and are planning to extend the range currently stocked by the majority of members.

The Future By driving the Group’s Strategic Goals NDD will continue to expand to represent the cream of Independent Distributors throughout England & Wales.

LAGER T H E M A R K E T

Lager continues to dominate the on-trade and remains the top selling product with sales figures standing at an

astounding £11.4 billion last year. Cold pints provide a smooth and refreshing taste and considerably add to lager’s

appeal with 95% of lager drinkers stating a brand served cold is what they expect.

Within this hugely popular sector and thanks to the rejuvenation of certain brands, the future for lager looks positive. The main

points to note are the strength of the best selling lager brands, the continuing growth of World Lagers and finally the interesting

emergence of Craft Lagers into the market.

Brands

The best selling lager brands include Beck’s Vier, Carling, Carlsberg, Foster’s, Kronenbourg, Stella Artois and Budweiser, all of

which remain within the top 20 of the top 200 drinks brands. Amstel is steadily gaining in popularity and looks set to join them

next year. Success stories of the year include Grolsch and Sol, both of which have now moved up the ranks into the top 50 brands.

World Lagers

World Lagers represent a growth area in the market with brands including San Miguel, Peroni and Tiger all experiencing high sales

figures this year. South American lagers such as Corona and Sol have also played a starring role in the World Lager category, both

being good sellers and perhaps most importantly having a unisex appeal.

With more and more World Lagers entering the market, licensees have the opportunity to choose an exciting and appealing range

for their bar. When selecting a range, it is important to ensure that each lager offers a distinctive place within a coherent portfolio

and provides a unique tasting experience.

Pubs are starting to recognise the growth of the ‘weekend millionaire’: people who frequent the pub less often but are willing to

spend more when they do. Quality over quantity is a must for this segment of the market and world lagers are an area that these

people are willing to spend more on. Ensuring you have attractive glassware to showcase World Lagers will have a positive impact

on sales.

Growth of Craft Lagers

American Craft Lagers have been revealed as the UK’s fastest growing beer trend. They contain high alcohol levels which are

typically lacking within British Cask Ales. Sales of Craft Lagers imported from the US have increased by 150% over the past year

after being rolled out into the UK’s pubs and clubs scene.

ALES T H E M A R K E T

Britain’s national drink has made steady progress in its performance over the last few years but has not yetreached sustained volume growth. Nevertheless, Cask Ale continued to outperform the whole on-trade beermarket last year, experiencing a share increase from 14.6% to 15% of the beer market as well as a 4%increase in distribution achieved through reaching a further 2500 outlets.

Cask continues to attract a substantial number of new drinkers, with 37% of people who have tried Cask Ale doing so in the last10 years. Notably, 10% of this number tried Cask Ale for the first time in the 12 months prior to The Cask Report 2011-2012. The number of 18-24 year old cask drinkers has also continued to rise. All these facts attest to the current appeal of Cask Ale inthe UK market.

The number of UK breweries is growing and the choice of beers is continuously expanding and so it is unsurprising that somepubs are noticing a double growth in Cask. This trend is underpinned by increased media exposure of Cask Ale.

2011 saw food outperform drink in terms of its contribution to pub turnover. Cask Ale drinkers are more likely to eat in the pubthan other drinkers, partly because cask is such a great accompaniment to food. A good way to encourage customers to selectCask Ale as their drink of choice to accompany food is to provide beer menus at the bar and on tables, as well as including beerrecommendations on food menus alongside any wine recommendations.

There are many other ways to help drive sales of Cask Ale. As well as the aforementioned beer menus, promotions, chalkboards,loyalty cards and beer festivals are all straightforward ways of raising the profile of Cask Ale. However, the best mechanism pubscan use for increasing sales of Cask Ale is to offer ‘Try Before You Buy’, a scheme which was endorsed by National Cask AleWeek in October 2011.

Cask Ale drinkers are more than twice as likely to visit the pub on a regular basis than non-cask drinkers (as cask is only availableat the pub), making Cask Ale an essential element of a profitable pub. When you consider the increased regularity with which CaskAle drinkers come to the pub it is obviously important to think about the range of ales available throughout the seasons to maximisesales in this category.

Cask is most successful when it delivers its full potential, so a crucial consideration for pubs stocking Cask Ale is achieving theoptimum cask range. Research conducted by Cask Marque, along with research conducted for The Cask Report 2011-2012,clearly indicates that two, three or four pumps are necessary for maximising Cask Ale’s potential. 71% of Cask Marque pubs stocktwo to four Cask Ales.

Within a three to four ale range, a mix between familiar and unfamiliar brands as well as contrasting beer styles is essential.Stocking only familiar, well-advertised brands leads customers to view the range as a boring and ‘high street’ selection. Equally,stocking a full range of unfamiliar brands leads to drinkers seeing the range as too specialist and niche.

It is important to recognise that familiar versus unfamiliar brands does not necessarily translate into large regional brewers versusmicrobreweries; familiar brands are often drawn from a local context and unfamiliar brands can be seasonal or limited edition alesfrom a larger brewer.

Crucially, a survey conducted by Greene King showed that 77% of cask drinkers prefer a mixed range, incorporating a balance ofpermanent Cask Ale and rotating guest beers. It is important to emphasise that for cask to be successful in an outlet it is vital thatpubs refresh their Cask Ale range on a regular basis with guest and seasonal ales.

direction by adding beer menus on tables offering food and drink pairing recommendations.

• Consider a selection of familiar big brand ales alongside smaller specialist ales to help keepyour bar interesting and exciting.

CIDER T H E M A R K E T

Since the cider revival began ten years ago - inspired by Magners’ over ice trend - the cider market has

enjoyed eight consecutive years of growth and remains one of the ontrade’s most exciting drinks sectors.

The past decade has seen much innovation within the sector and continued growth appears likely with the

recent emergence of the next generation of creative and extraordinary flavours.

Market research from Mintel revealed that 47% of Britons classed themselves as cider drinkers, up from 42% ten years ago. Cider

has rightly been described as “the undisputed success story of the alcohol category over the past six years”. Mintel forecast

volume sales to increase up to 12% between 2011 and 2016.

Younger drinkers and women continue to be attracted to the sector by the ‘trendy’ fruit flavours, all of which are steadily maintaining

good levels of growth.

In the past year the popularity of traditional and craft cider has also grown enormously, with a consumer shift away from mainstream

brands towards premium brands. Despite this, Strongbow remains the number one cider brand.

Packaged cider currently demonstrates the largest growth, with CGA statistics for the year up to October 2011 revealing a 17.65%

growth in volume and an impressive 26.3% growth in value. These figures demonstrate that the growth of packaged cider is not

being driven by discounting as it is with some drinks categories.

Draught cider has returned a more modest figure of 4% growth. Along with this growth in sales, the draught cider market is

experiencing greater competition with more brands now offering draught alternatives. There has also been an increase in the

number of smaller cider producers gaining wider distribution. For outlets stocking cask ale and continental draught lager, premium

draught cider is a perfect fit.

CAMRA’s cider pub accreditation scheme, which launched in 2009, gained its 1000th member in 2011. The scheme aims to

enhance awareness and boost the trade of pubs serving real cider and perry.

RTDs

With only a small number of brands competing in this category, innovation is key for the success of RTD’s. WKD reaped the

rewards with the launch of its flavour WKD Purple alongside a £3m marketing campaign. In terms of the future, this category looks

set to reposition itself towards premium drinks for adults in a similar way to cocktails, as well as maintaining its appeal to young

student types.

Top Tips:• Fruit ciders are very popular amongst younger customers and women thanks to their

sweet and refreshing flavours. Ensure you stock a variety of fruit ciders to appeal to these groups.

• Cider served over ice remains popular so ensure you have enough in the freezer and always offer the option of ice with cider, particularly during summer months.

• Outlets stocking cask ale and continental draught lager should endeavour to offer cider on draught.

SPIRITS T H E M A R K E T

The First Drinks Market Report 2011 reported that spirits have seen a higher share of sales over weekendsthan any other alcoholic drinks sector. The report also highlighted the importance of premium brands andinnovation.

The value of the spirits market continued to rise at a faster rate than volume, with a 5.2% value increase. The Morning Advertiser’sPub Market Report 2012 revealed that 13.1% of outlets surveyed said that spirits are becoming more important to their business,with 18.9% planning on developing the spirits category over the next year.

Vodka - Smirnoff remains the number one spirit and is one of only two vodkas in the top 10 spirits alongside Absolut at number5. Flavoured vodka has experienced continued growth over the last few years, with Smirnoff investing £1m on product support forthis category. There is an expected trend shift this year towards more subtle and natural flavours.

Whiskies - Whisky is a spirit that pubs often do well and they can offer a good choice to customers. A growth in the number ofquality Bourbons now on offer reveals a great opportunity for pubs as it is such a versatile drink; good neat, great as a longrefreshing drink and also fantastic for cocktails. Bell’s Whisky has now moved into the top 20 brands, undoubtedly a result ofDiageo’s investments into its mixed drink campaign, boosting the brand’s image as a mixable spirit.

Gin - Industry experts are confident that gin is experiencing a renaissance and continues to attract new consumers. Following thetrend of the ever popular vodka category, the gin category is demonstrating similar innovation and creativity; premium gin hasexperienced a rise in popularity and the category is now also experimenting with flavours. With the excitement surrounding ginthere has been a resurgence in the popularity of the classic gin and tonic. This, aligned with the new generation of gin consumersbeing adventurous and keen to explore the diversity within the gin category, shows the importance of stocking a range of gins andeven tonics, as well as offering a choice of garnishes.

Rum - Rum is experiencing a revolution, with the excitement surrounding the spirit continuing to grow over the past year. With itslight, golden, dark and spiced varieties, the diversity and opportunity provided by rum are plentiful. With a sweeter taste than otherrums, Golden rum is a big attraction to younger drinkers and also appeals to both male and female consumers; appealing to menwho are established whisky or bourbon drinkers and women who already drink white rum. Following a relaunch in 2011 CaptainMorgan’s Spiced is now the second best-selling rum in the ontrade. Bacardi remains the best selling rum in the on-trade retainingits position in the top 11-20 drinks brands.

Specialist Spirits and Liqueurs - Whilst UK spirits are growing at a rate of 1%, speciality drinks are growing at 7%, with increasinginterest in cocktails and shots. Flavour innovation and increased options for mixing have contributed to the growth of this sector.Several brands have also repositioned themselves as longer, mixed drinks over the past year.

The popularity of cocktails remains high, with the Mojito being the most requested cocktail in the UK. 15.1% of outlets surveyedfor the Pub Market Report 2012 said that they would be focusing on growing their cocktail category over the next 12 months. Withconsumers prepared to pay more for style, presentation and flavour, cocktails offer an opportunity not to be missed. Now it’s eveneasier for all outlets to offer cocktails with a trend towards pre-mixed cocktails and mixers, allowing quicker, no fuss cocktails thatstill deliver what consumers want, as well as a healthy profit.

Top Tips:• Flavoured vodkas are becoming increasingly popular and help to modernise

your bar and appeal to younger and female audiences. These are great for adding to long drinks or simply serving as shots.

• Cocktails are an opportunity not to be missed as they offer high profit margins. Customers are prepared to pay more for style, presentation and flavour so a small cocktail menu is a great bet for pubs this year.

SOFT DRINKS T H E M A R K E T

Soft Drinks is a hugely profitable category with growing strength in the market. Since the focus for many

pubs with Soft Drinks is still towards food, families and females - known in the trade as “The three F’s” - it

is crucial to have a range of products that cater for all of these considerations.

The ontrade sales value of Soft Drinks was worth £2.7 billion in 2011, with the Soft Drinks category remaining the second highest

in volume and third largest in value behind beer and spirits. The cola and energy drinks categories experienced the largest growth

rates over the last 12 months. Cola remained the top sub-category of Soft Drinks with a 1% rise in volume and a 5% increase in

value to £1.4 billion. Pepsi remained the number one brand in the cola category, despite an 11% value and 6% volume growth for

Coca-Cola. Interestingly, the growth of diet cola brands was greater than that of full sugar brands.

Energy drinks experienced exceptional growth, with value increasing by 16% and volume by 9%, rises fuelled by the growing

‘bomb’ trend of mixing energy drinks with spirits. The renewal in popularity of spirits also had a positive effect on mixers, which

demonstrated a 4% growth in both value and volume as well as an availability increase in 4% more outlets.

Mirroring the trend in the beer market, ginger was a popular flavour in the mixers category during 2011. As in recent years, juice

drinks remained popular with 7% and 3% increases in value and volume respectively, while carbonates and mineral waters both

experienced declines.

80% of the Soft Drinks market in 2011 was accounted for by Britvic and CCE, both of which out-performed the whole Soft Drinks

market in the ontrade. However, many other suppliers experienced falls in value and volume, with the notable exception of Energy

Drinks such as Red Bull and Monster.

Soft Drinks are now mirroring the trend in the alcoholic drinks categories for premiumisation, with consumers prepared to pay

higher prices for quality and an excellent serve. The two big players in the Soft Drinks market, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Britvic,

have both invested in ontrade support, training programmes and guidelines on perfect serves in a bid to standardise servings

across outlets to guarantee that customers receive the best value for money.

Premiumisation within the Soft Drinks category creates opportunities for smaller brands offering points of difference to enter the

ontrade, with predictions for an increased focus on more interesting flavours over the next year. It has even been suggested that

outlets transfer their approach to Cask Ales to their strategy for Soft Drinks by both offering a core range and incorporating frequently

changing guest brands.

WINE T H E M A R K E T

Wine is undoubtedly an important drinks category for the on-trade, with a reported 68% of UK adults beingwine drinkers and 26 million people regularly drinking wine in on-trade premises. Wine is the second mostprofitable category in the on-trade after spirit plus mixer drinks.

It is essential to make sure that customers know you sell wine: display tent cards and wine lists on tables and use chalkboards toadvertise your wines. Outlets should always make sure the wines themselves are visible to customers behind the bar.

When it comes to your wine range, it is no longer acceptable simply to offer a house red and white. Instead, it is important to offera coherent selection of the most popular varietals in the red and white categories along with suitable rosé and sparkling wines foryour customers.

The best-selling wine varietals in the UK are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio in the whites, with Merlot and Shiraz continuing toshow good sales in the reds. 70% of wine drinkers choose by varietal when drinking in on-trade outlets. Consequently, whencompiling your wine list, ensure that the varietal (eg. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz) is clearly displayed as this iswhat will attract the customers’ attention in most cases.

Rosé is the fastest growing wine category in the market and is important in attracting new consumers who want the sophisticationof wine but not the heaviness. Rosé has now achieved a 9% share in the on-trade and has extended its appeal from a drink primarilyfor warm summer’s days to being a popular choice all year round. It is great on its own or with food, so always offer it by theglass.

Sparkling wines such as Prosecco and sparkling rosé are growing in popularity so warrant serious consideration for inclusion onany wine list. Carafes of wine are rising in popularity too and offer a good size for customers who don’t want to drink a full bottle.

As a minimum start for a wine list, try three each of red and white, one rosé and a sparkling wine. Use a variety of countries if youcan, and offer clear differentiation in terms of taste and style, focusing of course on the most popular varietals towards the top ofthe list. Make sure your house wines are great for by the glass drinking.

It is essential to price wines with small increases. Customers are more likely to trade up for another £1 or £2, but not £5.

Positive and enthusiastic staff are an important element for selling wine. Involving staff in your wine selection to find out what theylike will make it easier for them to recommend wines from your list.

One of the greatest opportunities for wine in the on-trade is the increase in pub food sales. A great way to match wines to a menu istry them together - tasting sessions with staff are ideal and again increase staff confidence to sell the wines. Wine recommendationsshould be highlighted on menus and chalkboards.

Single Serve WinesSingle serve bottles grew in sales by 2% last year. These 18.7cl or 25cl are the equivalent of one and a half or two small glassesof wine. Single serves are much more customer friendly, offering a fresh glass of wine with every serve. They are good to includein your range if you are unsure a wine will sell and provide the opportunity to offer a wider range without any waste. They offer aperfect introduction to a wine - once customers like the product it is easier to get them to trade up to a full bottle.
