MCI HIGHLIGHTS

MCI Open House

On Wednesday, December 6th, MCI hosted parents, guardians, caregivers and future Grade 9s at our annual Open House. There were presentations made by Administration, Guidance, Athletics as well as an impressive amount of representation from teaching staff and students who were proudly speaking about their departments and the clubs that they are part of. This show of MCI spirit was seen and felt by one and all. Way to show your true colours, MCI…you have made us look very inviting to all of the guests we had come out to Open House!

Attention all Drivers in and around MCI!

A gentle reminder to all of those who drive or get a ride to school, that we need to make sure that we are being safe in the parking lot and on the streets in and around MCI. We would like to ask that all parents, guardians, caregivers, family members and students who are driving be extra careful of other vehicles on the road and also of pedestrians in the area. MCI has partnered with the York Regional Police in an effort to help keep our streets safe for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. There will be more police presence around the MCI community who will be monitoring road safety. Let’s all do our part to be mindful and take care of each other on the roads!

INFORMATION ITEMS – GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT

Field Study

On Tuesday, October 16, the grade 9 MCI Geography students participated in the Great Canadian Niagara Falls field trip! They visited the Welland Canal Centre, Clifton Hill, the falls and the Niagara’s Fury 4D experience. This field study enhanced student learning of the important physical, economic, transportation and tourism aspects of the Niagara region.

Geographic Inquiry in Action!

The grade 9 Geography students researched and presented their Genius Hour inquiry projects in the Library Resource Centre. They chose topics they were passionate about and presented them in creative ways ranging from 3D models to videos to board games!

The students are currently very busy preparing for their roles in the Alberta Oil Sands and Water Quality Town Hall meeting. They will listen to and debate with various First Nations groups impacted by the oil sands, the Alberta and federal governments, petroleum producers and companies as well as environmentalists. The process of geographic inquiry allows students to collaboratively explore issues from different viewpoints while developing critical thinking skills.

The grade 11 Travel and Tourism students are using the inquiry process to explore how tourism can be sustainable. This includes looking at emerging tourist locations, such as the island nation of Palau, to determine how best to develop tourism industries that balance environmental protection, respect for local cultures and long-term economic stability.

The grade 12 World Issues students are planning to volunteer their time with various local and international non-governmental organizations. By taking action and creating awareness, they are becoming engaged and caring global citizens! ME to WE Team

On Thursday, November 29 the MCI Me to We and Senior Boys Basketball Teams hosted a Period 5 buy-in basketball game to raise money for the Red Door Family Shelter. The Me to We Team also held a bake sale after school. They baked brownies, cookies, cake pops and cupcakes with the proceeds going towards making and distributing care packages for the Red Door Family Shelter. The teams raised over $400 thanks to the support of everyone at MCI! THANK YOU for your generosity MCI!!

There is a positive relationship between regular attendance and success in school. Students at MCI are required to attend regularly, to be punctual, and to participate in all scheduled classes.

VALID ABSENCES include illness, bereavement or family emergency.

AUTHORIZED ABSENCES include dentist/doctor appointments, driver’s test, and court appearances.

EXCUSED ABSENCES refer to field trips and school sanctioned events. Students are still considered to be at school.

EXTENDED ABSENCES of four days or more require the completion of a “Special Leave” form at least one week in advance of the leave. This form may be obtained from the Main Office. A parent/guardian signature is required. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on all work missed.

DO NOT plan absences or family vacations during culminating and exam periods as the evaluations CANNOT be rescheduled.

Type of Absence Parent/Guardian Responsibility Absent for a Full Day Phone the school with a valid reason the same day or send a note

upon return

Absent for One or More Classes Phone with valid reason indicating the time of absence or send a note with the student

Leaving Before the End of the Day Student signs out in attendance office with a note from the parent/guardian

In the Event of an Emergency Contact the office as soon as possible.

For safety reasons, students who have signed out must leave the building as they will not be directly supervised.
