MDBC History

•MDBC began in 1998 when Mayor Daley served as ‘Principal for a Day’ at Orr High School. A student suggested that one way he could continue working with the school was to start an after-school book discussion group.

•MDBC has been recognized by the American Library Association as one of the six exemplary after-school programs for young adults in the United States.

•In 2007 MDBC grew from approximately 2,100 students in 80 schools to 3,600 students in 150 schools.

•MDBC Middle School was piloted in 2007 for only 500 students but grew to include 1,500 students in over 70 schools.
