WHAT: USE CEILING FANS AND OPERABLE WINDOWS INSTEAD OF AIR CONDITIONING TO COOL HOUSE AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BREEZES.

WHY: A COOL BREEZE AT 78° FEELS GREAT AND IS CHEAPER THAN AIR CONDITIONING

WHAT: SEAL YOUR HOME WHY:

WHAT: SHADE EAST AND WEST SIDES OF HOUSE.

WHY: REDUCES DIRECT SUN EXPOSURE.

$$ HIGHER COST / MORE EFFECTIVE:

WHAT: USE DESERT LANDSCAPING WITH DRIP IRRIGATION.

WHY: THEY ARE LOW-MAINTENANCE, LOW-WATER AND VERY MID-CENTURY

WHAT: REQUEST LOW-VOC CARPETS, PAINTS AND FINISHES

WHY: VOC’S POLLUTE THE AIR IN YOUR HOME.

WHAT: CONDUCT AN ENERGY AUDIT

WHY: TO DETERMINE ENERGY WASTE AND COMFORT CULPRITS

WHAT: REPLACE SINGLE-PANE GLASS WITH DOUBLE-PANE OPERABLE WINDOWS; USE LOW-E GLASS.

WHY: EFFICIENT OPERABLE WINDOWS KEEP MORE OF THE HOT & COLD OUT, WHILE LETTING IN LIGHT & BREEZES WHEN YOU WANT THEM.

WHAT: INSTALL INSULATION IN WALLS, ATTIC AND FOUNDATION AND AROUND DUCTS.

WHY? WILL HELP STABILIZE INDOOR TEMPERATURES & LOWER ENERGY BILLS.

OTHER RECOMMENDED MEASURES:

USE RECYCLED MATERIALS (E.G., VETRAZZO COUNTERTOPS).

REPLACE FURNACES AND AIR CONDITIONERS WITH HIGH-EFFICIENCY UNITS.

INSTALL LOW-FLOW SINK AND SHOWER FAUCETS AND TOILETS.

REPLACE FLUORESCENT AND CFL LIGHT BULBS WITH LED LIGHTS.

INSTALL HIGH-EFFICIENCY POOL PUMP & HEATER.

INSTALL TANKLESS WATER HEATERS.

INSTALL SOLAR PV PANELS AND SOLAR THERMAL FOR POOL.
