2.0 INTRODUCTION

2.1 PURPOSE

This manual is the Installation and User Guide for the Costain Motorway Incident Detection and Automatic Signalling (MIDAS) Outstation. An overview is provided, followed by a detailed guide to installation, commissioning, fault finding and maintenance activities, followed by a user guide giving brief descriptions of the hardware modules. The Engineers terminal facilities are described and the document ends with an installation and commissioning record sheet. All procedures use the MOTE (MIDAS Outstation Test Equipment - available from Costain) as this is the most comprehensive and simple to use test equipment currently available for MIDAS.

2.2 OVERVIEW OF THE MIDAS OUTSTATION

The MIDAS Outstation connects to up to 10 pairs of standard MIDAS loops or to RADAR Detectors and provides queue, speed and flow alerts plus traffic data for vehicles passing over the loops or through the RADAR beams to the MIDAS Subsystem via the NRTS network. The MIDAS Outstation is located in a 600 cabinet and connects to NRTS over IP/Ethernet or RS-485. The loops are interfaced via Loop Detector cards that process four loops per card. RADAR detectors are interfaced via RADAR Interface cards which process 2 lanes per card. A maximum of 5 cards can be installed in the outstation, either all loops, all RADAR or a mixture. There is a local Ethernet connection for maintainer access and the MIDAS Outstation will connect over the NRTS Ethernet to the Remote Maintenance Access Service (RMAS). All connections are accessed from the front of the MIDAS Outstation and it is designed to be capable of being swapped out within 15 minutes. Lightning protection is built into the MIDAS Outstation on all interfaces. Configuration is achieved by use of a Highways England Address Plug Type 9300.

3.0 INSTALLATION OF THE MIDAS OUTSTATION

3.1 INSTALLATION

The MIDAS Outstation must be installed strictly in accordance with the instructions contained within this section. It is recommended that the installer be thoroughly familiar with the product by reading the full contents of this manual before attempting installation. Note that this equipment is intended for installation in a "restricted access location". Before carrying out any work on this equipment, the installer must read the WARNINGS in section 1.0. In particular, “hot swapping” may destroy the processor card and results in a chargeable repair.

3.2 PREPARATION

The following equipment is required:

1. MIDAS Outstation with Install Kit - this is shipped with the Outstation and contains mounting hardware, cables and protective earth cable eyes. The Outstation does not include any detectors but does have two blanking plates supplied.

2. There are some older MIDAS Outstations that you are unlikely to come across with IP only interfaces but the installation follows the same procedure. Note however that these are not suitable for installation where RS485 links are required.

3. Address Plug Type 9300 programmed with data specific to MIDAS Outstation being commissioned. This is also known as the Equipment Configuration Plug – ECP.

4. Highways England’s Site Data Entry Package (SDEP) application must be used to

generate the contents of the ECP. The ECP file must not be “hand crafted” as the smallest error can result in rejection by the Outstation.

3.3 TEST EQUIPMENT

The following specialised test equipment is required:

1. A laptop running the MOTE version 6.00 or above software. Note: Version 6.00 or above provides the required IP (Ethernet) Engineer's Terminal link. Earlier MOTE versions do not have the Ethernet connection for an Engineer’s Terminal.

2. Ethernet cable for Engineer’s Terminal and, depending upon the NRTS connection,

either a second Ethernet cable or a MOTE RS-485 interface and cable. A NRTS connection Ethernet cable is provided with the MIDAS Outstation. A mating RS-485 connector for the MIDAS Outstation is also provided but suitable twisted pair cable will have to be provided to connect to the 600 cabinet Klippon connectors.

3. Test scripts for all Outstations loaded onto the MOTE, generated from the Site Data

Database for the relevant Regional Control Centre (RCC) / Control Office. As an alternative, a single test script can be used for all MIDAS Outstations together with a spare ECP having the matching address and site data.

4. Multimeter capable of measuring mains voltages.

5. Outstation Information cards

6. Site Acceptance Record sheets (see below).

7. Installation drawings.

As an alternative if Test Scripts are not available, Configuration data will be needed for all Outstations. This is generated by the Costain (SSL) NMCS2 Configuration Builder program. This is usually shipped with the MOTE software or is available from the Costain Service Desk at Worle (see section 2.3). Once again, it requires the Site Data Database for the relevant Regional Control Centre (RCC) / Control Office.

3.4 CABINET REQUIREMENTS

The MIDAS Outstation fits into a 600 cabinet and requires 3U of height. There is no built-in battery so if a UPS is required, this must be supplied separately within the cabinet. Connections are required for:

• mains power

• NRTS Ethernet to connect to the MIDAS Subsystem, OAL and RMAS or NRTS RS-485

• loop detectors or RADAR detectors.

3.5 MIDAS OUTSTATION ADDRESS

The MIDAS Outstation’s address is set by means of a Highways England Type 9300 Address Plug. Note that the Address Plug is not provided as part of the MIDAS Outstation and must therefore be obtained separately. You will need: • Address Plug Type 9300 Highways England Stores No NMCS-0037-2-000

Unless the Address Plug is supplied pre-programmed with the required address, you will also need an Address Plug Programming Interface (otherwise referred to as an Address Plug Programmer). Once the MIDAS Outstation address is known, follow the instructions supplied with the Address Plug Programmer to program the Address Plug.

3.6 MAINS VOLTAGE CHECK

Using the meter, measure the incoming mains voltage. Ensure that the voltage is 230V + 10% - 15%, (ie between 195.5V and 253V). Record the result.

3.7 INSTALLING THE MIDAS OUTSTATION

The MIDAS Outstation must be configured to meet specific site requirements and it is recommended that these be determined in advance of delivering equipment to site. Establish the following:

• Site and cabinet location

• MIDAS Outstation Address - check that the address plug is correctly labelled

• RS-485 or Ethernet (NRTS IP) operation. Remove the MIDAS Outstation and Install Kit from its packaging. Record the Serial Number. Install the MIDAS Outstation into the 600 cabinet using the supplied hardware in the Install Kit:

1) Fit four M6 cage nuts to the cabinet uprights to suit the front mounting positions of the MIDAS Outstation enclosure.

2) Slide the MIDAS Outstation into position and secure it using four M6 screws and

washers.

3) Attach the programmed Address Plug to the cabinet by passing the tether through a suitable anchoring point and passing the loop in the end of the tether over the body of the plug to secure it.

4) Fit the Address Plug to the front of the Processor Module of the MIDAS Outstation.

Connect the safety earth cable between the earth stud on the MIDAS Outstation front panel, highlighted in yellow, and a suitable earth point on the 600 cabinet metalwork. Alternative sizes of crimped connection eyes are supplied. It is important that the earth is connected to the cabinet earth point before operating. Connect the loop input cable from the Klippon connectors at the rear of the cabinet to the Loop Connection Module at the front of the outstation rack if required. The loop cable should be fitted to the Klippon connector boards (see Figure 6) before fitting to the Klippon terminals to avoid fouling the adjacent rails. It is good practice to loom excess ribbon cable and secure with an elastic band to prevent crosstalk between loop channels and induced noise.

Detectors must be installed from the left most detector position viewed from the front of the Outstation. Blanking plates must be fitted to any unoccupied detector positions to prevent dirt

and moisture ingress. See Figure 3.

Loop Detector cards must have the on-card frequency switches (FREQ) set appropriately - see Figure 11 and Section 4.8.2. If a RADAR detector is to be installed, remove the appropriate loop detector card and replace with RADAR interface cards. (Do not do this with the unit powered up. It can destroy the Processor Module). For WAVETRONIX, the interface card should be configured for a “PEEK” outstation. Note that the fixing screws supplied with the Wavetronix cards are too short to engage with the card cage. Longer screws will have to be sourced. For Techmiracle, ensure that the interface card is a “Costain” card. Connect the IEC mains cable to the front panel connectors on the Power Supply Module. Mains Supply Connection:

1) Before connecting, ensure that the mains supply to the cabinet is OFF and that any other safety requirements concerning this supply are complied with.

2) Using the IEC mains cable supplied in the Install Kit, connect the MIDAS Outstation to the 230V AC mains supply, protected by a 6A MCB. Care should be taken to ensure correct and secure connections as follows:

3.8 COMMISSIONING THE MIDAS OUTSTATION

It is necessary to have a copy of the relevant Site Data on the MOTE to match that in the Address Plug. Either a copy of the RCC Site Data is required or a spare Address Plug must be programmed to match the Site Data available on the MOTE. Connect the MOTE in LCC Mode to the IP NRTS connector or in Transponder (IPT) Mode to

the RS485 connector as appropriate (Figure 9). Turn the power ON (1) using the front panel power switch on the chassis front panel and check for the following LED indications on the Processor Module:

• Power - Red - lit = OK

• Normal Mode - Green - becomes lit steadily after around 1 minute, showing that the MIDAS Outstation is operating correctly and has entered Normal Mode.

• Loop Faults: o Not illuminated = no faults are present on the detector channels. o Flashing Red = fault(s) are present on one or more detector channels.

Power OFF (0) the MIDAS outstation and fit the correct ECP as tethered to the 600 cabinet.

For IP NRTS interface, connect the NRTS cable to the NRTS connector on the front panel of the Lightning Protection Module. For RS485 NRTS operation, the RS485 connectors are as follows:

• P1 is the IPT (Transponder) RS485 link

• P2 is the RS485 Outstation Auxiliary Link. The MIDAS Outstation can be connected to the Instation over NRTS IP and to a device such as a Ramp Metering Controller over the RS-485 link if required. Loop detectors and radar detectors are set up in the usual manner by observing the Detect LEDs or using the vehicle data facility available on the MOTE v6.00 or later in Engineer’s Terminal mode. Connect the MOTE to the ENG TERM connector (section 5.0) in Engineer’s Terminal mode and check that the version of firmware installed in the MIDAS Outstation is the latest version available. If RMAS facilities are available (IP connected MOTE only) new firmware can be remotely downloaded and then restart the MIDAS Outstation. A hard reset can be effected by pressing the recessed System Reset button on the Processor Module for 10 seconds or cycling the mains power switch – wait 10 seconds between switching OFF (0) and then ON (1) again. Wait until the MIDAS Outstation has entered Normal Mode. Check for the following LED indication on the Processor Module:

• Instation - Green - flashing = connected to the MIDAS Instation. Contact the RCC and check the MIDAS sites are Obtainable on the OIF. Most important: Check that each site on the MIDAS Outstation is giving traffic data – speed and flow - on the OIF.

If there is no traffic data received at the OIF, this means that the MIDAS Outstation has not been fully initialised – the queue protection will not be working. It can all be switched on as follows: 1. Pull out the NRTS Ethernet or RS485 plug. The MIDAS Outstation will disconnect from the

RCC). 2. Wait for the MIDAS sites to go red on the OIF. 3. Reconnect the NRTS Ethernet or RS485 plug. 4. Wait for the MIDAS sites to go green on the OIF. 5. Check that each site on the MIDAS Outstation is giving traffic data – speed and flow - on the

OIF. 6. Repeat if unsuccessful.

3.9 OUTSTATION FAULT FINDING

The MIDAS Outstation reports Battery and Charger as “ok” to the RCC (even though neither are fitted) to avoid filling the Halogen Fault Log (FLOG) with misleading fault reports.

3.10 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND FAULT ANALYSIS

The MIDAS outstation is intended to be a line replaceable unit therefore there is no requirement for routine maintenance except for a recommended visual check for rodent damage on a regular basis. The connecting cables in 600 cabinets are known to be prone to this.

4.0 USER GUIDE

4.1 MIDAS OUTSTATION DESCRIPTION

The MIDAS Outstation is intended to provide the facility to monitor and control up to ten pairs of loops located at intervals along the motorway carriageway. It enables NMCS equipped Regional Control Centres (RCC) to detect motorway incidents and automatically set signals to warn approaching traffic. Each MIDAS Outstation continuously monitors vehicle data on a per lane basis. Vehicle counts, together with speed, headway and length data for individual vehicles are calculated. Time-averaged statistical data, derived from flow information and individual vehicle data, is reported to the Instation as Traffic Data. Raw vehicle presence data, flows and speeds are used by algorithms, which report corresponding MIDAS Alerts to the Instation. The MIDAS Outstation supports RS-485 and IP/Ethernet ports for communication with the Instation. Either of these ports may be used to poll the Outstation for alerts, traffic data and MIDAS equipment status data. If RS-485 communications are used, the Outstation is polled by its IPT, which forwards the information, via a Local Communications Controller (LCC), to the Instation. Otherwise, if the Ethernet port is used, the data is obtained directly by the Instation via an IP link. The MIDAS Outstation supports an Ethernet port to allow local connection of an Engineers Terminal. This link supports interrogation for identity, version and status information, and can provide Individual Vehicle Data and MIDAS Alerts to allow local monitoring of traffic conditions. An additional auxiliary link (OAL) is also provided. It operates in an output only mode and transmits individual Vehicle Data, Traffic Data, and MIDAS Alerts when enabled on the NRTS IP/Ethernet or RS-485 link. The MIDAS Outstation can support IP to the Instation and RS-485 on the OAL together if required. The Costain MIDAS Outstation is contained within a standard 3U x 19" rack mounting card frame.

4.3 HARDWARE DESCRIPTION

4.3.1 General

The MIDAS Outstation comprises of a euro card frame incorporating backplane and modules, which include lightning protection units for RS-485 and Ethernet circuits, and associated lead assemblies. This section provides details of the card frame, backplane and associated lead assemblies only, while detailed descriptions of the modules and lightning protection units can be found in subsequent sections.

4.3.2 Card Frame

The MIDAS Outstation card frame is based on a standard 3U high x 19" rack mounting unit. The following modules are fitted within the MIDAS Outstation card frame:

As standard, five loop detector cards are fitted within the MIDAS Outstation, interfacing a total of 20 loop circuits. However, the MIDAS Outstation can accept alternative detector types conforming to the requirements of TR2512. Siemens Traffic Controls Ltd Detector cards however are NOT compatible, and under no circumstances must they be installed. WAVETRONIX RADAR interface cards configured for “Peek” outstation mode may be installed, as may the Techmiracle RADAR interface card designed for the Costain outstation. The following serviceable controls, connectors, indicators and other items are accessible from the front of the MIDAS Outstation:

4.3.3 Backplane

4.3.4 Electrical Interfaces

With the exception of the mains supply, all external connections to the MIDAS Outstation are Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) connections according to European Standard EN 60950. Connections to line are via Telecommunication Network Voltage (TNV) circuits according to European Standard EN 60950.

4.3.5 Mains Supply

The MIDAS Outstation incorporates a standard IEC mains filter plug mounted on the front of the Processor Module. This is suitable for connection to a standard 230V AC mains outlet using the cable assembly provided. The outlet or mains plug must be fused at 5A nominal, 6A maximum. Care must be taken to ensure correct and secure connections as follows:

4.3.6 Safety Earth

The MIDAS Outstation card frame safety earth lead must be cut to length during installation and terminated to the main cabinet earth using the M8 ring terminal provided. This connection

MUST be made prior to operating the outstation. See Figure 5.

4.3.7 IP/Ethernet Port

An IP/Ethernet Port, labelled “NRTS” is provided at the front of the MIDAS Outstation for communication with the Instation. The IP Port uses a standard RJ45 connector. Note that the IP Port incorporates auto-crossover functionality. This allows connection between two similarly connected ports using a standard RJ45 patch cable rather than a crossover cable. The IP Port is for use with Ethernet 10 Base-T communications only.

4.3.8 Address Port

The Address port is provided on the Processor Module front panel for the attachment of a standard Highways England Address Plug. The Address Plug allows the MIDAS Outstation address to be set. The port uses a 6 pin MIL-C-26482 socket with the following pin assignments:

4.3.9 Engineer’s Terminal IP/Ethernet Port

An Engineer’s Terminal IP/Ethernet port, labelled “ENG TERM” is provided at the front of the Processor Module. The port uses an RJ45 connector. Connection to this port can be made using MOTE version 6.00 or above. Note that this port incorporates auto-crossover functionality. This allows direct connection to a laptop using a standard RJ45 patch cable rather than a crossover cable.

Loop Cable assemblies convert these connections to that required by the 12-way screw terminal blocks at the rear of the cabinet. See Figure 6. There are two separate printed circuit boards for easier handling. The cable ends are marked with the appropriate loop numbers, namely LOOPS 1 – 10 and LOOPS 11 - 20. The ribbon cable should be fitted to the boards before fitting to the Klippon connectors to avoid fouling the adjacent rails.

4.3.11 MIDAS Outstation Install Kit

The MIDAS Outstation Install Kit comes with the MIDAS Outstation. It is not separately stocked by Highways England. It has the following Costain part number:

Costain part number: PL5720-07 It contains all mounting hardware, cables for safety earth, mains, loop detectors and NRTS Ethernet. 6mm and 8mm crimp ring terminals are included for termination of the safety earth to the cabinet metalwork. See Figure 7. The loop cable is terminated in two printed circuit boards for connection to the Klippon screw terminals at the rear of the 600 cabinet - see Figure 6.

4.4 CONFIGURATION OPTIONS

4.4.1 Outstation Address

The MIDAS Outstation’s address is set by means of a programmable Address Plug Type 9300. Once the MIDAS Outstation address is known, follow the instructions supplied with the Address Plug Programmer to program the Address Plug.

4.4.2 RS-485 Communication Baud Rate

Both RS-485 interfaces operate at a fixed speed of 4800 baud so no baud rate configuration is required.

4.5 APPROVALS AND CERTIFICATION

4.5.1 Low Voltage Directive

The MIDAS Outstation has been tested and passed for Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations to EN60950.

4.5.2 Environmental

The MIDAS Outstation has been tested and passed in accordance with the requirements of Highways England specification TR2130C as qualified by TR2169J plus “TMT 061 – Intelligent Vehicle Detection Contract (Supply) Requirement 2015” for environmental testing. The Address Plug has been tested and passed in accordance with the requirements of Highways England specification TR2130C as qualified by MCE1137B for environmental testing.

4.5.3 Electromagnetic Compatibility

The MIDAS Outstation has been tested and passed for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) to EN50293. This approval was granted with the MIDAS Outstation mounted in a Highways England 600 communications cabinet.

4.6 PROCESSOR MODULE

The Processor Module is a single euro card module, incorporating the Communications

Processor. There are no user serviceable parts within the Processor Module. Figure 8 shows the Processor Module which is fitted next to the interface module.

4.7 LIGHTNING PROTECTION

The MIDAS Outstation Lightning Protection Unit has been tested and passed for lightning protection in accordance with ITU-T Recommendation K.20, Table 2, Test 2 and K24. Lightning protection is provided by the Lightning Protection Units and takes the form of semiconductor devices conforming to K44 standards.

Figure 9 shows the RS485/IP & LPU Module. The RS485 connectors are as follows:

4.8 LOOP DETECTORS

The Highways England Oracle code is MIDAS-0101-2-000.

4.8.1 Introduction

The Costain Loop Detector is a Eurocard four channel inductive loop detector designed for traffic control applications. The detector uses loop multiplexing to prevent crosstalk between adjacent loops and is easy to set-up and install. It uses the latest ARM7 32bit processor for peak performance. Figure 10 shows the front panel switches and Figure 11 shows the on-card switches as follows: Front panel switches (Figure 10):

• Reset Switch. Pressing the reset switch enables the detector to be manually reset during commissioning and testing. This results in the detector re-tuning the sensing loop and becoming ready for vehicle detection.

• Presence / Pulse feature (PRES 1). Each channel can be individually setup to operate in presence or pulse mode. The switch must be set for presence mode.

• Selectable Presence Time (PRES 2). Each channel can be individually setup for a presence time of 4.5 seconds or 35 minutes. This must be set to 35 minutes.

• Switch selectable Sensitivity. The detect sensitivity is the minimum change in inductance required to produce a detect output. (%ΔL/L). Seven sensitivity settings are available on the switches to allow flexibility in configuration.

• Channel Disable feature. This feature disables an unused channel so that the disconnected loop terminals do not result in a fault output.

On-card switches (Figure 11 ):

• Test Mode, Anti-Lock, Auto Retune, Power Save – must all be OFF.

• Output Polarity – must be ON (Costain Mode)

• Switch Selectable Frequency. The frequency of the loop is determined by the inductance of the loop and setting of the frequency. Four frequency settings are available to prevent cross-talk between adjacent loops on different detector cards. The frequency switch changes the frequency on all four loops on the detector card at the same time.

Front panel indications (Figure 10):

• Detect Indicator “D”. This LED Indicator is illuminated when there is a vehicle over the loop or the loop is faulty. This LED can also be used to determine the loop frequency. On reset, count the number of times the LED flashes. Multiply this number by 10KHz.For example: if the LED flashes 6 times, then the loop frequency is between 60KHz and 70KHz.

• Loop Fault Indicator “F”. This LED Indicator is illuminated when the loop is either open circuit or short circuit and is used to give a visual indication of a faulty loop.

4.8.6 Loop Card Fault Finding

SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION

The DETECT LED flashes erratically.

There may be a poor connection in the loop or loop feeder. The detector may be experiencing crosstalk with the loop of an adjacent detector.

Check all wiring. Tighten screw terminals. Check for broken wires. Try changing frequencies using the frequency switch.

The DETECT LED randomly stays on.

Faulty loop or loop feeder wiring. Movement of the loop in the ground.

Check the wiring. Tighten screw terminals. Check for pinched or bent wires. Is the feeder wire twisted? Check for cracks in the road surface near the loop.

The LOOP FAULT LED is permanently illuminated.

The loop inductance is too small or the loop is short circuit. The loop inductance is too large or the loop is open circuit.

Check that there is no short circuit on the loop feeder wiring or the loop. If there is no short circuit then the inductance is too small and more turns of wire should be added to the loop when recut. Check that there is electrical continuity on the loop. This can be done using a multimeter on the ohms range (< 5 Ω). If the loop inductance is too large then try reducing the number of turns when next recut.

4.9 RADAR INTERFACE CARDS

Wavetronix RADAR interface cards configured for “Peek” outstation mode may be installed, as may the Techmiracle RADAR interface card designed for the Costain outstation. The electrical interface and system connector are the same as for loop cards; see sections 4.8.4 and 4.8.5. Other manufacturers cards may require longer fixing screws. See manufacturers’ manuals for detailed information.

5.0 ENGINEER’S TERMINAL AND RMAS FACILITIES

Warning: ! Connecting an engineer’s terminal is potentially Roadside Device

affecting and may have serious safety implications. Contact the RCC prior to connection to obtain approval.

The Costain MIDAS Outstation retains the traditional Engineer’s Terminal facilities provided MOTE v6.00 or higher is used. In addition, there are two means of remotely accessing additional facilities via Highways England’s Remote Maintenance Access Service (RMAS), namely the Command Line Interpreter (CLI) and a web-based interface.

5.1 CONNECTING AN ENGINEER’S TERMINAL

Connect a suitable laptop running MOTE version 6.00 or above using an Ethernet cable to the Engineer's Terminal connector on the front panel. This is the lower connector on the RS485/IP & LPU Module.

5.2 STORES CODE

The Stores Code reported by the MIDAS Outstation is 21 decimal (15H) or 22 decimal (16H).

5.3 COMMAND LINE INTERPRETER (CLI)

The MIDAS Outstation CLI uses a secure means of access known as SSH2. This involves the use of certificates which will be issued by Highways England. The login procedure is as follows using a standard PuTTY programme.

6. On the left hand side menu tree, go to Connection -> SSH -> Auth and click ‘Browse’ to select

the file that contains the private key for ‘midasoscli’ user. This key file will be issued by Highways England.

6.0 PRODUCT END OF LIFE PLAN

This section contains the Product End of Life Plan for the MIDAS Outstation equipment. In summary, the End of Life Plan comprises the following actions:

• Removal of the Equipment;

• Disposal of the Equipment.

6.1 Removal of the Equipment

This process is the reverse of installation which is outlined in section 3.7.

6.2 Disposal of the Equipment

The MIDAS outstation is an item of electrical and electronic equipment, therefore under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013 (WEEE), it must NOT be disposed of with normal household or landfill-destined waste. It shall be disposed of through a WEEE-compliant dismantling and recycling scheme.

6.2.1 Local Disposal

The equipment may be disposed of by the remover, using a suitably licenced waste carrier and waste disposal contractor. The Waste Code for the disposal of the MIDAS Outstation is: 16 02 14.

6.2.2 Return to Supplier

The equipment may be returned to the manufacturer for disposal by a suitable waste disposal contractor. Return details may be obtained from the Costain Support Desk:

B. ENGINEER’S TERMINAL ACCESS USING MOTE

This procedure applies whether the MIDAS Outstation is connected to the Instation over RS485 or IP Ethernet.

Required:

• MOTE v6 or later – this has the IP connection for Engineer’s Terminal

• Costain (SSL) NMCS2 Configuration Builder program. This is usually shipped with the MOTE

software or is available from the Costain Service Desk at Worle (section 2.3)

• NMCS2 Site Data database for the relevant Control Office

• The MIDAS Outstation must be in Normal Mode to connect to the Engineer’s Terminal

facilities - see below.

Generating the MOTE Configuration File(s):

1. Load the NMCS2 Site Data database onto the laptop running MOTE.

2. Run the NMCS2 Configuration Builder program to generate a MOTE configuration file for the

MIDAS Outstation(s).

Loading the configuration file onto MOTE:

1. Run the MOTE application.

2. File menu (top left on screen):

• Open Configuration

• Browse and select the configuration file generated above

• Select Open

3. Check that the logging screen shows:

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION FILE LOADED OK.

The following illustrates the processes using Instation address 192.168.100.1 and Outstation address 192.168.100.7 Getting a MIDAS Outstation into Normal Mode:

1. Connect the laptop running MOTE to the NRTS Ethernet connection on the MIDAS Outstation.

2. Switch on the Outstation.

3. Check that the MIDAS Outstation is in Initialisation Mode by observing that the NORMAL

MODE LED on the front panel is flashing.

4. Configure the IP address of the laptop to be that of the relevant Approved Instation. For a

Windows machine, the steps are as follows:

• Invoke the command prompt.

o To open the Command Prompt in Windows 10, look in its Start menu folder.

Find the Windows System folder from the list of apps and tap or click it. Under

the Windows System folder, click Command Prompt.

o To open the command prompt in earlier versions of Windows, select the Globe

button and type “cmd” in the search window. Click on Command Prompt when

it appears in the results.

• Command: ipconfig

• Check if the IP address is the IP address of the Instation (192.168.100.1)

• If it needs changing, invoke the Network and Sharing Centre, then Local Area

Network/Connection

• Double click on IP4 and enter the IP address of the Instation (192.168.100.1) and click

OK

• Command: ipconfig – check the IP address is now correct (192.168.100.1)

• Command: ping <IP address of Outstation>

o for this example, type: ping 192.168.100.7

• Check that there is a response to the ping command – this shows that there is now an

IP connection to the Outstation.

5. Run MOTE as Administrator – right click on the MOTE icon to access this command.

6. Load the relevant configuration file as above.

7. Select “Transponder Simulation” on the bottom tabs

8. Select INS\ button on the top toolbar. In the MIDAS Device Selection window select:

• Instation – Outstation Link (TCP/IP)

• The relevant MIDAS Device from the list

• OK

This establishes the connection between MOTE (acting as the Instation) and Outstation.

9. The Outstation should reply with an EXTENDED STATUS REPLY message confirming that it

is in Initialisation Mode.

10. Send the following messages from MOTE in this order:

• Device Data (from the Commands box)

• Update Time (from the Broadcasts box)

11. The Outstation should reply with an EXTENDED STATUS REPLY message confirming that it

is now in Normal Mode. The Normal Mode light on the front of the Outstation should also be

constantly lit green.

12. Send the following message from MOTE:

• Outstation Control (from the Commands box)

13. The Outstation should reply with an EXTENDED STATUS REPLY message confirming:

• Algorithms: Under Instation control

Connecting MOTE as Engineer’s Terminal This applies for all MIDAS Outstations whether IP or RS485 connected to the Instation

1. Connect the laptop running MOTE to the Engineer’s Terminal Ethernet connection on the

MIDAS Outstation.

2. Configure the IP address of the laptop to be the MIDAS Engineer’s Terminal IP address of

192.168.0.1. For a Windows machine, the steps are as follows:

• Invoke the command prompt as above

• Command: ipconfig

• Check the IP address

o All MIDAS outstations use this same IP address for the ET connection

• Check that there is a response to the ping command – this shows that there is now an

IP connection to the MIDAS Outstation.

3. Run MOTE as Administrator – right click on the MOTE icon to access this command.

4. Load the relevant configuration file as above.

5. Select “Engineers Terminal” on the bottom tabs.

Ensure that all buttons on the top toolbar are deselected. (Check the INS\ button in particular if the MOTE has previously been used to get the Outstation into Normal Mode).

6. Select the Connect button:

• Select SSL/Costain as Device Manufacturer then select OK.

• Interface Selection window:

o Interface – select Ethernet adaptor (not WiFi)

o IP address: 192.168.0.2

o Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

o Server IP address And Port: 192.168.0.2:30000

MOTE should show that it has detected a device on the IP Engineer’s Terminal link.

7. All available commands are now shown on the MOTE screen.

8. To tune the loops, use the Logging Control window command: Vehicle Data/Link 1, then select

the Logging Control button.

The Outstation replies with a HOST STATUS message showing: Logging Control; Vehicle Data. Individual vehicle data is shown on the MOTE screen.
