Social Screening is where the company that holds your savings does not invest in so called “sin stocks” such as: alcohol, pornography, prostitution, abortion, etc. As Christians, one thing to look for in investing your savings and legacy giving is does the agency practice “social screening”. This is one good reason to look to Christian organizations that typically use this technique in their investing strat- egy. Today’s availability of mutual funds and ETFs, while some of the best sources for return on investments, gives into the pressure for the funds to use a multitude of companies in order to gain as much return as possible in times where one stock is under pressure. Investments in other stocks can help shore up the troubled stock until it can recover and then it can hold up at another time. So, these fund managers mitigate exposure to just one company or even categories of companies to insure their returns are downturn proof as much as possible. When they do this, they generally do not filter what type of company it is. Rather, they are only interested in if it is making money. Today, each mutual fund or ETF has so many companies in their portfolio it is almost impossible to find one that will ignore the sin stocks. In fact, it is virtually impossible to find growing portfolios without in- vesting in mutual funds and ETFs that have at least some sin stocks in their hold- ings. Also, most mutual funds and ETFs only advertise the top 10% of their held companies. It is so difficult for a Christian to practice good stewardship in savings and even legacy giving. One way for Christians to reduce funds that invest in sin stocks is to seek Christian fund managers who do practice “social screening” as much as practical. This gives you assurance that companies you invest in are screened to reduce or eliminate ownership in these sin companies. A good question to ask an institution before allowing them to handle your savings or legacy is, “do they practice social screening and to what degree are their investments devoid of sin stocks.” One such Christian institution is Your Kentucky Baptist Foundation. It is one of the most active in assuring sin stocks are not included in their funds manage- ment. In fact, less than 1.4% of all their investments are associated with sin stocks. What’s more, none of their holdings have investments in prostitution, abortion or pornography. Being a good steward of your possessions is much more complicated today than it was in years gone by. Planning for the future and providing a living legacy when you are gone requires us to look to stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs and who knows what’s coming next. Let’s be alert and deliberate with our possessions APRIL 15, 2015

From Your Pastor Stewardship

We are adding a section on Stewardship to our new member class. Sky

wrote the following about social screening that I think is important for all

of us to consider in our investing and savings.

What is social screening, and what does that have to do with you?

Social Screening is where the company that holds your savings does not invest

in so called “sin stocks” such as: alcohol, pornography, prostitution, abortion, etc.

As Christians, one thing to look for in investing your savings and legacy giving is

does the agency practice “social screening”. This is one good reason to look to

Christian organizations that typically use this technique in their investing strat-

egy.

Today’s availability of mutual funds and ETFs, while some of the best sources

for return on investments, gives into the pressure for the funds to use a multitude

of companies in order to gain as much return as possible in times where one stock

is under pressure. Investments in other stocks can help shore up the troubled

stock until it can recover and then it can hold up at another time. So, these fund

managers mitigate exposure to just one company or even categories of companies

to insure their returns are downturn proof as much as possible. When they do

this, they generally do not filter what type of company it is. Rather, they are only

interested in if it is making money. Today, each mutual fund or ETF has so many

companies in their portfolio it is almost impossible to find one that will ignore the

sin stocks. In fact, it is virtually impossible to find growing portfolios without in-

vesting in mutual funds and ETFs that have at least some sin stocks in their hold-

ings. Also, most mutual funds and ETFs only advertise the top 10% of their held

companies.

It is so difficult for a Christian to practice good stewardship in savings and

even legacy giving. One way for Christians to reduce funds that invest in sin

stocks is to seek Christian fund managers who do practice “social screening” as

much as practical. This gives you assurance that companies you invest in are

screened to reduce or eliminate ownership in these sin companies. A good question

to ask an institution before allowing them to handle your savings or legacy is, “do

they practice social screening and to what degree are their investments devoid of

sin stocks.”

One such Christian institution is Your Kentucky Baptist Foundation. It is one

of the most active in assuring sin stocks are not included in their funds manage-

ment. In fact, less than 1.4% of all their investments are associated with sin

stocks. What’s more, none of their holdings have investments in prostitution,

abortion or pornography.

Being a good steward of your possessions is much more complicated today

than it was in years gone by. Planning for the future and providing a living legacy

when you are gone requires us to look to stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs and

who knows what’s coming next. Let’s be alert and deliberate with our possessions

MAKING DISCIPLES…

Question 8: What is God?

Answer: God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.

Scripture: John 4:24; Psalm 89:14; 90:2; 147:5; James 1:17; Rev. 4:8; Exodus 34:6-7; 1 Tim. 1:17; Numbers 23:19

Comment: “Infinite” means there is no limit to how great He is! “Eternal” means He never had a beginning and will never have an ending! God can respond to us and yet not be “changeable.” His character never changes, He acts consistently on the same principles al-ways. Even His responses to us are known and planned long before, so that His purpose are unchanging.

Question 9: Are there more Gods than one?

Answer: There is only one living and true God.

Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:4; Jeremiah 10:10; Psalm 96:4-5.

Comment: There are “gods” which are idols, but they are not “living.” And there are “gods” which are angels or demons, but they are not “true” God—that is, they are not eternal, infinite and unchanging. Only one God is living and true.
