A most appropriate way

to pay homage to

the utterly crucial

role played by the Wool Industry

in Australia’s evolution from shambolic penal colony to prosperous, independent nation, the Royal

Australian Mint’s

2011 2-Coin BU

and Proof Sets are defined

by inspired designs, official

presentation packs and strictly limited availability. Just

40,000 BU and 25,000 Proof sets

have been issued!

These mintages

represent a major

underestimation

of demand, and

are at odds with

both the eminently

affordable Official

Issue Price of each set, and the

importance of these unique types

to collectors. The

Wool 20c and $1

will not be issued

for circulation and are not in the 2011 Proof &

Mint Sets, making

these Australian

legal tender sets

vital to anyone keen to preserve

a complete collection.

Indeed, reviving a type so well known to people of all ages, the Royal Australian Mint has inadvertently triggered increasingly loud pleas for this inspired 2011 $1 commemorative to be struck for general circulation! Alas, that is not going to happen. A one-year-only type, the 2011 $1 Ram’s Head BU will not to be issued for circulation, and will never be found in your change – making the 2011 $1 Privymark 4-Coin

Merino Magic!Arguably the finest of the many high-quality, value-for-money tributes to the Australian Wool Industry, the 2011 Australia’s Golden Era of Wool Coin & Banknote Portfolio has proved predictably popular – in large part due to the inclusion of a large piece of GENUINE Merino wool in each pack! An imaginative addition to a collection defined by great originality and unbeatable value, the 2011 Australia’s Golden Era of Wool Coin & Banknote Portfolio unites genuine Australian Merino wool with three official Australian legal tender issues. Featuring an example of Australia’s last Silver Shilling, issued from 1953 to 1963

during the reign of Elizabeth II, this impressive presentation is also

highlighted by the presence of two important decimal types. Issued during the Johnston/Fraser signature combination, an example of Australia’s very last $2 banknote is found in each set, together with the 1991 50c Decimal 25th Anniversary Ram’s Head coin. The consummate combination with which to honour the Australian Wool Industry’s unparalleled role in Australia’s economic, political and social development, all three Australian legal tender issues are presented in strictly Uncirculated quality – quality preserved for the long-term by the informative, illustrated full-colour pack. Sensational value-for-money for such a highly professional, richly historic presentation, the 2011 Australia’s Golden Era of Wool Coin & Banknote Portfolio is within the reach of all Australians at a mere A$69.95.

Low mintage, high quality

One of the most exclusive Brilliant Uncirculated collections in world

coinage, with the total mintage restricted to an astoundingly low 2,000 sets, the official New Zealand 2011 Mint Set is now available at Downies!

A comprehensive overview of New Zealand’s coinage for 2011, this highly desirable collection comprises six flawlessly struck BU coins. Featuring the 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2, the set is headlined by the majestic $5 Cu-Ni BU crown – devoted to the endangered Yellow Eyed Penguin. One of New Zealand’s most beloved native creatures, easily identified by the yellow stripe that runs

across its bright yellow eyes, this distinctive flightless bird is known as the world’s rarest penguin.

A fine centrepiece to a presentation of beauty, quality and limited availability, the 38.70mm $5 BU Crown is united with the five circulating denominations behind archival bubble, enclosed in an official full-colour pack. Surprisingly affordable given that so few sets are to be issued across the globe, the 2011 Mint Set is to be enjoyed by a very exclusive group of collectors. With a sell-out of the 2,000-set mintage inevitable, and little chance that we will be able to secure more than our original allocation, we highly recommend an early order.

Memorable military milestones…Celebrating the centenary of the Royal Australian Navy, this unique presentation from the Perth Mint is underpinned by official Australian legal tender status, excellent collector value, strictly limited availability and imaginative presentation. An apt tribute to Australia’s seafaring defenders – established in 1911 when George V conferred the title Royal Australian Navy upon the then Commonwealth Naval Forces – the 2011 $1

RAN Centenary 1oz Silver Proof & Badge Set is headlined by an Australian legal tender 1oz .999 silver Proof. Capturing both the proud history and ongoing importance of the RAN, the 40.60mm flan portrays early RAN servicemen, united with depictions of the pre-WWI River Class Torpedo Boat Destroyer, HMAS Yarra, and the modern warship HMAS Anzac. ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY 100th ANNIVERSARY

RMC DUNTROON 100th ANNIVERSARY

1911 was indeed one of the most important years in the history of the Australian Armed Forces. Not only was the Royal Australian Navy established in 1911, but it was also the year that Australia’s Royal Military College Duntroon was

created to train cadets to serve

as officers in the Australian Army.

A prestigious tribute to the 100th anniversary of one of the world’s leading military colleges, this official Perth Mint release features an authentic, gold-plated RMC Duntroon Badge replica, united with an Australian legal tender Silver Proof. Highlighted by a full-colour depiction of the RMC Duntroon Badge, this brilliantly designed 40.60mm .999 fine silver 1oz coin is dominated by a detailed, fully struck-up design representing the multiplicity of roles and challenges undertaken by Duntroon’s dedicated cadets.

A unique, exclusive celebration of RMC Duntroon – graduates of which have led Australian soldiers in every major military campaign – this impressive commemorative is presented in an official Perth Mint case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity confirming the mintage of just 7,500.

The RAM Mint Set CollectionCOMPLETE from 1966 to 2011!

Individually, the Royal Australian Mint’s Uncirculated Mint Sets are considered to be among the finest BU sets in international numismatics. As a complete series, however, the 1966-2011 Mint Set Collection forms a spectacular, comprehensive – and scarce – record of Australia’s modern currency history. Indeed, due to the

rarity of some issues, we have not

been able to offer the complete series

for nearly FOUR years – making this rare opportunity extremely important.

The quality…One of the highpoints on the collector calendar, the annual release of the Mint Set is always eagerly anticipated – in large part due to the immaculate quality of the coins. From the 1966 1c to the 2011 $2, every coin in every Mint Set has been struck to a much more rigorous standard than those coins issued for circulation. When you also consider the official presentation, powerful commemorative themes and, crucially, the 28 coins that were NOT ISSUED FOR CIRCULATION and can only be found in Mint Sets, it’s no surprise that the series is so highly sought after – and consequently so rare as a complete collection.

The scarcity…The worldwide popularity of Australian Mint Sets, and in some cases relatively low mintages, has ensured that many are tough-to-find. The early dates are particularly notorious for their scarcity, and, as new enthusiasts are drawn to the series, more pressure is placed upon the limited number of sets available today. The natural corollary of scarcity is potential, and it is no great surprise that many of the 1966-2011 Mint Sets have soared in secondary market value.

The potential…The link between scarcity and potential is especially apparent with the early years of this key collector program. The first set, issued in 1966, is now

valued at nearly A$100, with the 1969 set (now A$165), 1972 set (now A$189) and 1971 and 1973 sets (now A$169 apiece) all indicative of the long-term value of the early Mint Set issues. The trend is not limited to the early issues, however, with even recent sets soaring above Official Issue Price. The 1990 set, for example, was issued at A$15, and now trades at A$150+, with the 1997 set (now A$125) and 2000 set (now A$140) illustrating the potential of later dates in the series.

The opportunity…Whilst we have every set available individually, and also offered as complete Machin

RARE ‘PLATE IDENTIFICATION LETTER’ $10 TRIO!One of our most unusual – and most popular – banknote offers, we are delighted to have secured more stock of the rare, desirable 1991 $10 Fraser/Cole Plate Identification Letter (PIL) Matching Serial Numbers Trio! Although it is unknown whether it was used as a security device, or to assist quality control, the Note Printing Branch of the RBA inserted a tiny letter onto the printing plates for virtually every decimal paper note. With the impending release of polymer

notes, PILs were phased out by 1990. Some three years later, however, during the last days of the 1991-93 Fraser/Cole paper $10 print-run, one of the plates was damaged – and was replaced with an old plate carrying PILs! As the printing press comprised three plates in a rotating drum, printing three 40-note sheets per revolution, the inclusion of one PIL plate meant that 1/3rd of the notes printed at the end of the last paper $10 run feature a PIL. For every 120 notes printed during the final period of the $10 Fraser/Cole

issue, only 40 carry a PIL. Three consecutive notes, as here, illustrate this change to the printing plates. Taken from RBA bundles and in Uncirculated condition, this trio comprises two notes without the PIL and one note with the PIL – with all bearing matching serials! A highly collectable numismatic anomaly, we have a very small number of sets in stock, with a few individual PIL $10 notes also available.

In the case of the $10 banknote, the Plate Identification Letter was placed 29mm vertically below the right hand leg of the capital ‘A’ in ‘Australia’

A fantastic opportunity for just a handful of our clients, we also have a few sets of the rare Fraser/Cole $10 PIL banknote in Consecutive Runs of Four!

Providing a rare, exciting opportunity for our clients to secure an early Australian $50 type in strictly Unc quality – and in Consecutive Pairs and Consecutive Runs of Ten – we recently secured an original RBA bundle of the 1979 Knight/Stone $50!

An extremely rare combination, never before offered by Downies, each of the four successively numbered notes found in these sets features a Plate Identification

Issued just five years after the introduction of the denomination, the 1979-82 Knight/Stone $50 is, like all early high denomination types, increasingly scarce – and rising in price. Too valuable for people to casually set aside as a memento, and doubling in value in less than a decade,

Australia’s first

Ten Shilling note!

Australia’s very first Commonwealth banknote, the 1913 10/- Collins/Allen forms a breathtaking combination of extreme rarity and compelling history. One of Australia’s most important currency issues, seldom seen on the market in any condition, this key banknote represents a ‘dream acquisition’.

Representing the beginning of Australia’s first national banknote series, and bearing Australia’s first signature combination, the 1913 Collins/Allen 10/- is properly described as a great Australian rarity. With the Ten Shilling denomination generally issued in the tens, if not hundreds, of millions, the total number of the 1913 Collins/Allen 10/- printed was extraordinarily small.

Known by less than

100 examples!

With 98 years having passed since issued, almost the entire print-run of 500,000 has been lost or destroyed, with experts estimating that less than 100 exist today. This extreme rarity has ensured a huge increase in competition for the few remaining examples of the 1913 10/- Collins/Allen, and even in lower grade, this numismatic icon is seldom seen on the market – and soaring in

value. In the last decade alone, this historically imperative banknote has leaped from A$6,000 to A$27,500 in VG and from A$10,500 to A$55,000 in Fine! In light of the rapid rise in catalogue value across all grades, this particular example of the 1913 10/- Collins/Allen – slightly edge trimmed but otherwise graded Fine – represents an outstanding opportunity for collector or investor at A$19,500.

THE LAST AUSTRALIAN 10/- TYPE!

Last George VI 10/- in rare Consecutive Pairs!

The last 10/- note issued during the reign of George VI, Downies is delighted to be able to offer our clients the chance to acquire the 1952 10/- Coombs/Wilson in superb Uncirculated quality – and in Consecutive Pairs! If top grade George VI notes are scarce – and, naturally, they are – then they become rarities of the highest order when presented in consecutive

sequence. The rarity and desirability of notes with successive serial numbers, especially examples in high quality, has seen a surge in competition for predecimal Consecutive Pairs over the last few years. This has led to a surge in market value, with Consecutive Pairs regularly commanding a premium over the value of two individual notes in the same grade. An extremely attractive acquisition for the

predecimal collector, and an astute portfolio diversification, we have just five Consecutive Pairs of the 1952 10/- Coombs/Wilson in stock. Taken from a Consecutive Run of Ten notes that had been stashed away before entering circulation, each 59-year-old Consecutive Pair is in an utterly

Fifty-three years after the first Australian 10/- note was issued, the denomination was consigned to the pages of history when Australia adopted the decimal currency system. The last hurrah of the imperial system, the final 10/- note is a

compulsory element of every Australian collection – especially in the stunning quality seen here. Released during the first decade of the rule of the long-reigning Queen Elizabeth II, Australia’s final 10/- was issued under

the auspices of the Reserve Bank for just four years, and carried the Coombs/Wilson signature combination. Clearly set aside at the time of issue, around 50 years ago, we have this ‘last-of-its-kind’ type in strictly Uncirculated quality!

Tokens – historic, affordable and very collectable…During the 18th and 19th centuries, the shortage of small change was a huge problem in Britain and across the Empire. Essential for everyday

transactions, the lack of lower denomination coins led to an innovative response from communities in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and

elsewhere – the creation of ‘Traders Tokens’.

If government couldn’t provide a medium of currency for small transactions, then the

private sector would! Issued by businesses to facilitate trade, Tokens were unofficial coins, which, in Australia, circulated until the 1870s, when their prevalence

led colonial governments to ban their use. A fascinating piece of the past, we have a variety of affordable Australian and British Empire Traders Tokens in stock.

AUSTRALIA’S COLONIAL GOLD!Seeing the Great Southern Land as a convenient dumping ground for those who had fallen foul of the draconian laws of the time, Britain never gave much thought to the monetary requirements of

its new colonial possession. Thus, from Settlement in 1788 until the 1850s Gold Rush, Australia used many types of currency – including rum, promissory notes, and an array of coins from all over the globe.

The coins of the Mother Country naturally played a key role during this period. Before 1825, when the passage of the Sterling Act made British coins the sole acceptable legal tender currency in the colonies, settlers used a wide variety of international

copper, silver and gold coins – including Britain’s 22-carat gold Guinea. Replacing the Guinea as Britain’s premier gold coin in 1817, the 22-carat Sovereign was also used extensively in Australia – up to Federation in 1901 and beyond.

Forming a unique link with the men and women who forged a nation out of a group of disparate British colonies, either of these immensely beautiful, historically invaluable gold coins represents a compelling addition to any Australian collection.

The Spade in premium grade!

1850s British Sovereigns – in Unc!To the Australians of the 19th century, Britain’s long-reigning monarch, Queen Victoria, must have seemed disturbingly timeless. From the start of her reign in 1837, until 1887 when she was nearly 70, the only portrait used on British Sovereigns depicted Victoria as she was when she took the throne at the age of 18! A truly great work of numismatic portraiture, the Young Head portrait was created by famous

Royal Mint designer, William Wyon. United with the armorial magnificence of the Shield reverse – the only reverse motif employed on Queen Victoria British Sovereigns from the beginning of her reign until the 1870s – the first Queen Victoria obverse type looks particularly fetching when found in high grade – as exemplified here. Struck at the Royal Mint in London during the Gold Rush era, and circulating widely in Australia during

found in high grade – as presented here. Struck only from 1787 – when the First Fleet left Portsmouth in England on its 12,000-mile journey to Britain’s new possession – until 1799, the Spade Guinea circulated extensively in the earliest days of the colony. A natural inclusion in Australia’s first currency system, the Spade Guinea was given one of the highest values of Governor King’s Currency Proclamation of 1800, valued at £1 2/-.

A coin of great beauty, with the spade-like Shield from which the coin takes its name united with a distinctive portrait of King George III, the 1787-99 Spade Guinea is tough-to-find in high grade – and yet surprisingly good value for such an important, memorable, authentic piece of Australian history. Tiny mintage just 1,000 coins! The Perth Mint’s lowest mintage 1/20oz Gold Roo BU, not normally available individually, our presentation of the 2010 $5 Gold Kangaroo 1/20oz BU in Mid February Money naturally sparked a massive response from our clients. We have just 20 coins remaining in stock! Not intending to strike a 1/20oz Gold Roo BU in 2010, the Perth Mint did ultimately issue 1,000 coins in response

to a request from an international dealer assembling a special presentation. For virtually any numismatic issue, a mintage of

1,000 is tiny. In light of the mintages of previous issues in the Mint’s 1/20oz series, however, this figure is truly astonishing. The 1990 1/20oz Gold Roo, for example, had a mintage of 130,609, whilst the 1991 and

1996 1/20oz Roo BU coins had mintages of 112,965 and 189,706 respectively. In this context, the 2010 $5 Kangaroo Gold 1/20oz

mintage of 1,000 is almost beyond belief! Set in a timber case with a Certificate of Authenticity, this one-year-only .9999 fine gold Australian legal tender type is set to vanish from the market forever.

Immediate action a must!

LOWEST MINTAGE 1/20oz GOLD BU ROO EVER!

Rare Roos! Just 1,000 of each struck!Underpinned by fine silver, pure gold, Proof quality and sensational full-colour designs, this dazzling Silver Kangaroo set is also defined by strictly limited availability. A mere 1,000 examples of each Silver Proof Kangaroo were struck! An eye-catching tribute to Australia’s primary native icon, this exclusive set comprises three .999 Silver Proof medals – each measuring 40.60mm. The first, issued in 2008, features a stunning portrayal of the Aussie Outback at sunset, with the

Roo precisely finished in pure gold. Just as striking, the 2009 and 2010 Silver Proof Medals were also graced with full-colour designs, complemented by pure gold plating. Individually superb illustrations of the Mint’s precious metal expertise, the three Silver Proofs look magnificent when brought together to form one complete collection. Excellent value at just A$225
