Three men have appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in County Antrim last week. Nelson Cheung, 65, died after his car was forced off the road near Randalstown on 8 January. His wife, Winnie, 57, was injured. Appearing in court were - Virgilio Augusto Fernando Correia, 33, from Grant Avenue, Randalstown, Gary William Thompson, 32, from Cunningham Way, Antrim, and Christopher David Menaul, 25, from Barra Street, Antrim. They deny the murder of the Chinese businessman, attempting to murder Mrs Cheung, the attempted robbery of Mr Cheung and the robbery of a handbag, iPad, iPhone, £200 in cash and Ulster Bank and American Express cards.Mr Menaul is also accused of burglary at a house on the Magheralane Road between 6 January and 9 January. Lisa Thompson, 32, the wife of Mr Thompson, from Cunningham Way, Antrim, also appeared in court. She is accused of handling stolen goods and perverting the course of justice. The four spoke only to confirm they understood the charges against them. A police officer told the judge at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court that he believed he could connect the accused with the offences. He revealed that Mr Cheung had been stabbed 17 times, and that his wife Winnie had been stabbed in the hand The court was also told that the couple had been heading home to Ballymena shortly after midnight from their takeaway business after closing up for the night. As they headed along the Caddy Road, on the outskirts of Randalstown, their vehicle was ambushed by two cars that forced them off the road. Mr Caldwell said people got out of the car and approached the Cheungs’ vehicle, before pulling

open the Jeep door and shouting: “Give us the money.” The police officer said while Mr Cheung was stabbed, his wife Mrs Cheung was verbally abused and grabbed by the hair and was stabbed on her hands, which cut an artery causing bleeding. However, she managed to break free and ran to a nearby house for help, before returning to the car where she found her husband. The officer also told the court that a CCTV investigation is being conducted, and that a forensic analysis is being carried out on another car involved in the incident and that Mrs Cheung’s blood had been found on the handbrake.

Cambridge House Grammar School Head Boy, Aaron Henry was celebrating last week when he received the news that he has been offered a place to study medicine at Oxford University in September. Aaron was required to complete an entrance examination as well as travel to Oxford to sit through a number of gruelling interviews before being offered the place. Only 10% of students who apply to study Medicine at Oxford are successful.Aaron achieved 11 A* grades at GCSE and he has completed A Level Mathematics in just one year and was awarded the top A* grade in this also. Last year Aaron completed a number of work placements in the field of Medicine. He was also accepted onto Summer Schools at both Cambridge and Oxford universities. Aaron was obviously delighted to receive this offer, “Having spent a week at Oxford University during the summer, I knew that to gain a place at such a prestigious institution would be extremely challenging. I was therefore delighted, if a little shocked, to be offered a place to read Medicine at Somerville College, Oxford. The support, advice and guidance I have received from everyone at

CHGS has been incomparable, not only during the application process, but throughout my time here. Now there is just the small matter of A Levels!” Aaron has consistently demonstrated an absolute commitment to his academic studies, to his voluntary work, as well as to his school. Along with the current Head Girl, he leads the Activity Club, for Year 8 pupils to encourage their involvement in the extra-curricular aspects of school life; he is generous in giving his time to support younger pupils with their academic work, encouraging them to achieve their best. Last summer Aaron was a volunteer in Share Discovery Village; as an outcome of this experience he is now a regular volunteer and has commenced his Level 1 in British Sign Language to make him a more effective communicator for people with hearing and speech difficulties. Cambridge House Principal, Mrs Elma Lutton was one of the first people to congratulate Aaron, “Aaron does everything with the humility of one who genuinely cares about others and wants to be the very best at what he undertakes. We are proud of his academic successes but prouder still of a young man who understands and values what is important in life for real success and happiness.”

GREEN PASTURES CHURCH PLANS IN JEOPARDY AFTER PLANNERS REJECT SUPERMARKET

Green Pastures church plans for a new 97-acre development on the outskirts of Ballymena could be in jeopardy after planners rejected a supermarket seen as key to the scheme. The Gateway project at Ballee would provide a business park, training, social and student housing, a nursing home, a church, hotel and retail premises. Opponents of the scheme say it will take trade away from the town centre - which is already suffering from low occupancy rates.Planners carried out a shopping analysis of the town and it is understood the results of their investigation have been central to the recommendation to provisionally refuse part of the application. Green Pastures, an evangelical church behind the project, applied for permission for a mixed-use hub of businesses on the site including a food superstore, petrol station, drive-through restaurant, entertainment centre, health centre, taxi office and car parking. The application attracted 29 objections and one letter of support from the Wright Group. The planners’ decision will be put to Ballymena Borough Council next week.

In its reasons for refusal, Planning Service said: “The proposed food superstore element of the scheme does not meet the locational requirements of the department’s planning policy statement 5, ‘Retailing and Town Centres’, in that it is likely to have an adverse impact on the vitality and viability of Ballymena town centre and undermine its comparison and convenience functions.” Planners have approved the remainder of the scheme, including more than 200 houses, a 60-bed hotel and 40-bed nursing home. A new church and leisure facilities have also been given the provisional go-ahead. A spokeswoman for the church scheme yesterday said those behind the venture were disappointed with the initial refusal of the superstore plans. “The Gateway project board welcome the approval and support of the recommended aspects of this project, namely the church building, community buildings and recreation areas and the housing aspect including nursing home, elderly care housing, supported/independent living housing, special needs housing and student accommodation as well as the training centre, hotel, self-catering accommodation, business and social economy parks and hotel,” she said.

JU-JITSU AT GREYSTONE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Greystone Primary completed their first Ju-Jitsu & Anti-bullying Schools course before the Christmas holidays. The course was taken by local coaches Paul & Mandi Timperley from Antrim Ju-Jitsu Group (of Shogun Ju-Jitsu International Ireland) who are currently running a roll-out plan in Antrim. The Principal Miss Arlene Graham was delighted by the outcome of the course and commented;“We were delighted to be able to offer the Ju-Jitsu for Schools Anti-Bullying programme to our pupils. The sessions were delivered in such a fun and interactive manner that it was thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part!”The finale presentations were completed at a special morning assembly on Thursday 18th December 2014 in Greystone Primary School. National Ju-Jitsu Coach Paul Timperley comments; “Greystone Primary is a wonderful community friendly school environment for the children and visitors alike. The children were very pleasant, enthusiastic and well-mannered, doing extremely well in all aspects of our course. They were a really great group of kids to work with!”Paul & Mandi Timperley continue to work both within the schools and their clubs in helping ‘stamp out’ bullying with a zero tolerance ethos.

They teach proven techniques which encourage alternatives to violence, in helping children stay safe and happy. Paul says; “Every child has the right to go to school and come home safely and unharmed. Unfortunately this doesn’t happen in some cases in almost every school. Our objective is to help ‘level out the playing field’ a little, so-to-speak, to teach the smaller and quieter children knowledge and help them gain confidence in standing up for themselves by coming forward to speak about their problems to staff and parents. The ‘hitting back’ method is absolutely not the answer and way to deal with bullying!” Sensei’s Paul & Mandi’s work within local communities can be seen on the national ju-jitsu website at www.shogun-jujitsu-ireland.com. Mandi adds; “Well done to all the girls and boys who graduated on this course as they were excellent! The Gold Medal Winner and Champion student is Reaghan, a great girl who did wonderfully well. Also well done to Ross, Bethany, Amy, Woody & Alli, winners of the Ju-Jitsu Silver Medals and Merit Awards!” NEW BEGINNERS Ju-Jitsu classes are currently available for all children aged from 6 years old (or from P2). Please telephone Mandi or Paul on 07525 657880 to register your child.

Alexander O’Neal has become the latest star to make a premature exit from Celebrity Big Brother house, after leaving the show of his own accord. On Saturday it was revealed that the singer had received an official warning for using homophobic language, but it as yet unclear whether this is behind his decision to leave. The 61-year-old had clashed with Perez Hilton, with the showbiz blogger riling O’Neal by blowing kisses at him. After Hilton followed him into a different part of the house, O’Neal hit back: ‘I know what you want but you’re not going to get it… ‘You’re going to sit there with that silly ass f****t

look on your face.’ O’Neal was subsequently given a reprimand for ‘unacceptable’ language. O’Neal is the fourth celebrity to leave the show, but only one contestant has actually been evicted.Jeremy Jackson was removed from the house after pulling open the dressing gown of fellow contestant Chloe Goodman, subsequently receiving a police caution for common assault. Ken Morley was also ejected from the house for ‘continued use of wholly unacceptable language’, after using a racist term twice, making more comments on race and a series of sexist remarks.Chloe Goodman is the only contestant to have been evicted so far.

Very well it seemsWhile Mark Zuckerberg’s personal fortune of $33.3billion has been much publicised, the average salaries of his employees are none too shabby. According to data research by Glassdoor, the average entry level engineer can reportedly expect an annual salary of $106,000 (£69,900) while an average product Analyst receives $118,864 (£78,393). Software engineers at the social media giant

earn a mean income of $183,397 (£120,958).Facebook’s own value is currently estimated at £200 billion, which must explain the company’s somewhat impressive salaries to it’s8,348 employees (as of September 30th 2014). The social media network was founded in 2004 by Harvard students Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin before quickly expanding to other American universities before becoming a worldwide phenomenon.

HOW WELL DOES FACEBOOK PAY IT EMPLOYEES?

LARGER BUMS COULD MEAN SMARTER BABIESWomen with larger behinds are all the rage these days, but it turns out this trend could also result in some super-smart babies being born in the future. That’s right – scientists believe that the extra fat around women’s bums could help in the development of babies’ brains. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh think the fat around women’s bums and thighs contains cells that, when transferred to the baby through breastfeeding, could help increase the child’s intelligence. The study suggested that this may be the reason why women often find it hard to shift extra fat from these areas after giving birth – as the nutrients the baby needs may be stored there. Professor Will Lassek explained: ‘You need lots of fat to make a nervous system and the fats in these areas are also enriched in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) which is a particularly important component in the human brain. ‘It looks as if women have evolved to accumulate these fats and hold on to them – until a baby arrives.’ So ladies – if someone critiques your curves, just smile with the smug knowledge that your child will probably be their boss one day.

A huge asteroid will pass by Earth this month. The space rock, code-named 2004 BL86, is expected to reach a point about 745,000 miles from our planet – three times the distance to the Moon. Although easily far enough away to be safe, the flyby on January 26 is a narrow encounter in astronomical terms. It will be the closest any asteroid comes to the Earth until the predicted fly-past of another rock,1999 AN10, on August 7 2027. Latest estimates suggest that AN10, which is 0.6 miles across, could approach as close as 19,000 miles. Dr Don Yeomans, retiring head of the US space agency Nasa’s Near-Earth Object Programme office at the jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena, California, said: ‘Monday January 26 will be the

closest asteroid 2004 BL86 will get to Earth for at least the next 200 years. ‘And while it poses no threat to Earth for the foreseeable future, it’s a relatively close approach by a relatively large asteroid, so it provides us a unique opportunity to observe and learn more.’ The asteroid is likely to be bright enough for amateur astronomers to spot with small telescopes and strong binoculars. Dr Yeomans added: ‘I may grab my favourite binoculars and give it a shot myself. ‘Asteroids are something special. Not only did asteroids provide Earth with the building blocks of life and much of its water, but in the future, they will become valuable resources for mineral ores and other vital natural resources. They will also become the fuelling stops for humanity as we continue to explore our solar system.

Apple has patented something intrigu-ing: an iPhone Home button that pops out to become a joystick. Is this good news for gamers and the iPhone 7’s killer feature, or is it just one of Apple’s many mad ideas? The thinking behind it is obvious enough – touch screens aren’t always the best input device for video-games – but there’s often a big difference between what Apple patents and what it actually makes. Like many tech companies, Apple patents almost every idea it has. It’s a form of insurance – today’s mad idea could well be tomorrow’s massively popular product, and whoever owns the patent makes the money. To date Apple has patented all kinds of things that it doesn’t make: magic pens, fold-able phones, mad-looking bracelets, cameras, virtual reality headsets… you get the idea. Would a home button that turns into a joystick be worth making?

We’re not convinced. First of all, it flies in the face of Apple’s ever-thinner designs. A recessed button that pops out needs somewhere to pop out from. Secondly, the home button is where Apple has its Touch ID sensor for unlocking the device and authorising payments. It’s hard to imagine Apple messing with that too much, or putting it in a position where gaming could damage it. This particular patent may have turned up this month, but it was filed back in 2013 – just before the iPhone 5S introduced Touch ID. The patent does sound very much like a ‘let’s patent it just in case’ thing. Not only does it describe the button as a joystick, but it suggests adding additional sensors to it including accel-erometers, gyroscopes, electrical sensors and ultrasonic sensors. It’s all technically feasible, but you’ve got to won-der whether it’d be worth the engineering effort.Could Apple do it? We’re sure it can. Will it do it for the iPhone 7? We aren’t holding our breath.

EXODUS: GODS & KINGS A story from the bible made into an epic blockbuster feature film seems all the rage in late 2014 and early 2015. This critic for one finds it difficult to accept stories from the bible being re-told in such epic ways; however the humanity or lack thereof in a story so engrained into all Christian minds will both haunt my dreams (at least for a while) and live long in the memory. For this, director Ridley Scott (Aliens, Gladia-tor et al.) must take some credit. We start in ancient Egypt, as conceived by someone who’s spent a lot of time in Beverly Hills hotel lobbies. There are marble halls and indoors ivy, lavish fruit platters and topless slaves fanning toga-clad groupies. This is home for two brothers, Moses and Ramses, the first (Christian Bale) ear-nest in a towelling dressing gown, the other (Joel Edgerton) only opting for clothes if they’re gold, and then generally just a skirt and choker. Why does Moses stand out? It’s not just his lib-eral sensibility. It’s because he’s actually a Hebrew discovered in the rushes and adopted by Ramses’ sister – information confided to him by Jewish elder Ben Kingsley, then leaked by Mendelsohn’s slimy viceroy. Moses is duly exiled to the desert where he shacks up with a girl he meets at the well. They have a son, but a head injury triggers visions telling Moses to return to home and check up on Ramses’ reign. All Hollywood’s takes on the tale – from Cecil B DeMille’s The 10 Commandments to Dream-Works’s The Prince of Egypt – have run with the sibling rivalry angle, despite scant supporting evidence. In Scott’s case, it was a good call. There’s an integrity at work here which finds full force in the final reel, as Moses tries to save Ramses from himself, then turns terribly potent in end-title

dedication to Scott’s own brother, Tony. But Exodus trades in other myths too: most ob-viously a superhero origins story, in which a man must face up to murky origins in order to save the world. He must abandon his child, too – as in Interstellar, a film which Exodus resembles, right down to the terrible weather. There’s also some Arthurian rhetoric involving a special sword; a dash of Hunger Games, with the massed rebels and flaming archery. At times, it can feel like the Bible is the least key text. Yet the devout have less to worry about than many suspected. The main story arc, even co-opt-ed by a secular director such as Scott, remains the hubris of acting immortal. Ramses doesn’t just make the error of declaring himself God; he expresses his divine entitlement through the contemporary foible of over-ambitious building projects.Pre-plague Pithom is basically a building site, where Ramses berates his architect, who thinks they ought to have prioritised the tomb, not the temple. So when the river fills with blood and rot-ting fish it feels less like a harbinger of apocalypse than just another construction hiccup. The plagues are as well rendered as you’d hope given the $200m budget and cutting edge tech. Scott adds crocodiles and sharks to the mix and you do get a sense of a relentless assault, what with the boils and the hail, the dead babies and the vomiting bulls. Even Moses himself has words with the Lord: “Is that it, are you done?” In The Ten Commandments, God’s voice boomed back out at him from behind the burning bush; one of Scott’s innovations is God appearing to Moses as a 10-year-old boy. For Christian au-diences who don’t find the Italia Conti intonation grating, this will likely be fine – a creative reading of God speaking in a still, small voice. The seas parting, too, are presented as all His work.

Yet as the mood turns bleak, the film becomes if not quite grinding, then certainly remorse-lessly grim, fixated on mortality, beaches filled with feasting vultures, seas studded with bloated corpses. This should be affecting stuff, but leaves you feeling something’s missing, the plague of the Egyptian first born children being killed being portrayed in the manner it was, most affects the audience, the rest? Like all great books, the films can’t seem to reach the heights of a readers own imagination, certainly not this readers.

BLACK SEAA submarine captain is laid off by a salvage company and makes a deal with a shadowy backer to look for a storied sunken submarine reputed to be loaded with gold at the bottom of the Black Sea. Since this find would get him even with his ex-bosses, he puts together a crew of English and Russian sailors for the task, taking off to uncharted depths with his motley crew. The closer they get

to the prize, the riskier it becomes to trust one another.

RED ARMYRed Army is a feature documentary about the Soviet Union and the most successful dynasty in sports history: the Red Army hockey team. Told from the perspective of its captain Slava Fetisov, the story portrays his transformation from na-tional hero to political enemy. From the USSR to Russia, the film examines how sport mirrors social and cultural movements and parallels the rise and fall of the Red Army team with the Soviet Union.

SON OF A GUNIn the criminal world, life is like a game of chess. To gain control, you have to stay a few moves ahead of your opponent. Lose that control, and you risk becoming a pawn in their very dangerous game. During a six-month stint inside a West Australian prison, rookie criminal JR (Brenton Thwaites) meets the smart and enigmatic Brendan Lynch (Ewan McGregor). In exchange for pro-tection on the inside, JR agrees to help Brendan get outside, hooking up with the influential Sam Lennox (Jacek Koman) to orchestrate a daring prison escape that frees Brendan, and inmates Sterlo (Matt Nable) and Merv (Eddie Baroo). JR is rewarded for his efforts, and with a taste of the high life and flirtations with Sam’s beautiful girl Tasha (ALICIA VIKANDER), he gets sucked deeper into Brendan’s criminal world. But whose game is he playing? Becoming a father-like mentor to JR, Brendan convinces him to join on another high stakes job - robbing a Kalgoolie gold mine. But with millions of dollars at stake, it’s hard to tell whom JR can trust, and whose side each player is actually on. With his feelings for Tasha increas-ing, and his faith in Brendan decreasing, JR must figure out his next move before its check, mate.

PAIN FREE WITH FOOT AND ANKLEI have always had problems with my right ankle, regularly spraining it which would leave my foot painful, stiff, and swollen for a day or so. I even-tually became unable to rotate my right ankle without pain.  I’d had a few bad sprains during my childhood and in each in each case it took at least a week to be able to put my foot to the ground again. About 10 years ago after some more injuries I went to a physiotherapist (again).  He felt that my ankle wasn’t responding to his treatment and suggested I see an orthopaedic consultant. The consultant took some MRI scans which showed that I had probably been born with some of my ankle bones fused together and this was what was restricting my ankle movement. The consultant explained my difficulties but he felt that it was not serious enough to warrant surgery.  Wearing very sensible lace up shoes, always having an ankle strap in my bag became a way of life for me.    Earlier this year my friend Issy told me about an insole with a rocker which she had been given recently and spoke about the huge difference it was making to her mobility.  The rocker insole had been designed by David Hallowell at the North-ern Ireland Foot & Ankle Clinic in Glengormley. On her recommendation I contacted David for a consultation.  A week later I collected my insole.  I placed them in my trainers and went from his clinic to shop at the Abbeycentre.  I parked on the roof park and used the stairs to get to the shops.  I suddenly realised that I was going down the stairs with much greater mobility than usual; and the downward movement of my right ankle was much easier than normal.  I had a busy summer and was away a lot.  With

my new insoles I found that walking was much easier.  I was in Glasgow to watch the Com-monwealth Games for about 10 days.  Although using public transport to get to the events, it was always necessary to walk a good distance from transport point to arrive at the arena or stadium area.  If I had done this before I had the insoles, my feet would have been sore, my ankle swol-len and locked so that my walking would have been badly effected and painful.  I would have spent the evening with my feet up so that I could manage the next day’s activities.  But that wasn’t what happened this year.  There was no recovery time because it wasn’t needed thanks to the insole creating the rocking motion for my ankle.  No swelling, no pain, no locking of the ankle, no need for recovery time!  I have been pleased too that the insoles fit into several pairs of shoes and boots, not just my trainers.I would definitely recommend that anyone else with similar ankle problems as mine make an appointment with David. Deirdre David says - “This type of bony restriction of the ankle joint is always painful and can cause further pain due to the gradual degeneration of the foot as it tries to compensate for the lack of ankle move-ment. By replacing the lost movement of the ankle joint we are able to reduce pain both in the ankle joint itself as well as reduce the compensation and consequent foot pain. This replacement of move-ment is what the rocker is designed to achieve”

For further information on the rocker or to make an appointment Telephone: 02890 833568

BALLYMENA United salvaged a point at Portadown on Saturday with a dramatic late comeback to draw 5-5 in a goal laden game at Shamrock Park. Many United supporters were still filtering into the ground when the hosts took a first minute lead. Peter McMahon’s cross from the right was chested down in the box by Darren Murray and finished off by Peter Twigg to leave the Sky Blues shell shocked. It didn’t take Ballymena long to recover however, as just a minute later they were level thanks to a superb curling effort from Matthew Tipton. Tipton should have put United in front on eight minutes but his effort was saved by Ports goalkeeper David Miskelly when well placed to score. Portadown made United pay for their benevolence in front of goal just four minutes later when Peter McMahon’s low shot evaded everyone in the box and found its way into the bottom corner. Further efforts by McMahon and Gary

Twigg were denied as Portadown exerted a spell of pressure on the United backline. Another glorious chance fell to Matthew Tipton on 26 minutes but United’s top goalscorer shot over after being played in by Gary Thompson. Again Portadown punished Ballymena almost instantly, as Darren Murray exploited a huge gap in the defence to allow Gary Twigg to run through on goal and finish beyond goalkeeper Stuart Addis. United managed to pull a goal back three minutes before half time when Darren Boyce was presented with a tap in following Allan Jenkins’ parried effort, following good work on the left from Gary McCutcheon and Matthew Tipton.Portadown set about the early stages of the second half determined to restore their two goal advantage, both Gary Breen and Robert Garrett went close as the United defence continued to falter. The two goal advantage was restored on 68 minutes as the home side made it 4-2 thanks to Gary Twigg completing his hat trick after finding himself one

on one with Stuart Addis. United refused to lie down and got back in the game on 79 minutes when Tony Kane’s pinpoint free kick was headed home by Johnny Taylor. At this point both sides appeared to disregard the need for the art of defending as Darren Murray was allowed to run straight through and past the United goalkeeper to make the score 5-3 and once more give Portadown a two goal lead. However, at this point the home side could be accused of resting on their laurels as they allowed United back into the game. Another fine free kick delivery from Tony Kane caused havoc in the penalty area, with Matthew Tipton eventually scrambling the ball home to reduce the deficit to one goal and give the Sky Blues a fighting chance. On 87 minutes the comeback was complete with Tony Kane again the architect, his cross from the right fell to Allan Jenkins who finished smartly beyond David Miskelly to secure a dramatic late leveller for United. This was not to be the end of the drama

however, Stuart Addis pulled off two fine saves from first Michael Gault and secondly Sean Mackle in injury time to prevent Portadown from scoring an incredible sixth. In the end a point was probably a fair result on an afternoon where neither defence covered themselves in glory and both teams wasted numerous chances, a statement that suggests a 5-5 final scoreline could actually have been even more! MICHAEL DUNLOP SIGNS YAMAHA DEAL FOR 2015

Road racing star Michael Dunlop has signed to ride for the official Yamaha racing team this season. The Ballymoney man flew to Yamaha’s European headquarters in Düsseldorf to complete a deal which will see him ride for the Milwaukee backed outfit. Dunlop will compete on the new R1 Superbike at the North West 200, Ulster Grand Prix and Isle of Man TT. He created history at the TT in 2014 by becoming the first ever rider towin four races in consecutive years . It’s the third different team in as many years for Dunlop - he split with the official Honda team in 2013, before signing for BMW last year. The 25-year-old won the German manufacturer’s first Superbike race in 75 years at the TT, but was then surprisingly released before Christmas as BMW decided to move their efforts to the formerly Suzuki backed Tyco team. He hopes to compete on Yamaha machinery in the other Supersport and Superstock classes under his own

MD racing team banner. Dunlop has also been named as the stand-in rider for the team in the British Superbike Championship, and he will also be part of the Yamaha World Endurance team talking part in selective rounds including Le Mans and Bol D’or. Michael Dunlop on his Yamaha deal “I’m buzzing at the minute and I am up for the job - it means I can dip my hand into other things and get involved in different areas of racing.” He is currently regarded as the world’s best road racer and will attend the official Yamaha team launch at the end of February with MotoGP stars Valentino Rossi and and Jorge Lorenzo. Dunlop will also be part of the official Yamaha team test at the beginning of March, and hopefully will compete in the first British Superbike race at Donington Park to prepare for the road racing season. Team manager Shaun Muir said on Thursday that he wants to extend the one-year deal before the end of the season and make it a long-term partnership.

FAMILIAR NAME, DIFFERENT ERA - ICEBREAKER RALLY RETURNS

The Icebreaker Rally name returns as the 1st round of Mid Antrim Motor Club’s 2015 championship. Many of you may remember it as being a road rally hosted at the beginning of the year in the 70’s and 80’s. The rally organising committee have decided to bring the name back to the calendar, this time as a stage rally. They have introduced some changes to the original rally which was run both as a single venue event at Ballymena Showground’s to using forests and lanes in the Ballymena area, run with the support of sponsorship from GMW & Stephen Mawhinney Motors. This year the event will be 100% gravel rally, which will be based in Ballyboley Forest. The HQ, Service and stages are all confined within the forest complex, which means no road insurance is required- keeping costs down for competitors. 24 stage miles are on offer for only £200.

Carey Floorcare, supplier of Industrial Cleaning Equipment in Ireland is the headline sponsor for this year’s rally and thanks goes to William Carey, a fellow competitor and the Glens of Antrim rally COC for his generous sponsorship. This event is only one week before the first round of the Valvoline Irish Forest Championship in Donegal so will make an ideal shakedown for those wanting to get back into the swing of things after the New Year. At this time of year the Mid Antrim Club likes to look back at the highlights and lowlights of 2014; as they begin afresh from this, they would like to take this opportunity to wish all a safe years rallying, and hope that everyone able to will jump start the New Year with them on 24th January.
